twig faq to answer all of the asks i got regarding my liveblog

Q: holy shit twig turned out bad huh A: yeah

Q: should i read twig? A: no. it's bad

Q: what about the parts of twig that were good though? i noticed that there were parts of twig that seemed awesome before everything suddenly exploded A: okay let me elaborate. the first ~13 arcs of twig are really really endearing when they're focusing on the lambs. when they're being about the lambs, they range anywhere from "cute" to "extremely fun" to "genuinely super compelling" to "shit that made me cry (positive)." we have high points such as:

12yo sylvester lambsbridge fumbles 3 people with crushes on him harder than anyone's ever fumbled in their life in the span of like 7 hours maximum

sylvester lambsbridge does transhet biopunk brokeback mountain

wildbow writes rose thorburn but if she were a hardass trans girl (she's the one doing transhet biopunk brokeback mountain with sy)

gordon dies and lillian copes by taking some of sy's drug that gives him turbo-adhd

helen is there

sylvester lambsbridge experiences what i earnestly believe to be one of the cruelest things wildbow has ever done to any of his protagonists

lots of other stuff, i'm abbreviating here

but the reason i say the first ~13 arcs of twig are good when they're focusing on the lambs is that twig is prone to slogging, strikingly mediocre fight scenes--sy can't fight for Shit, but wildbow still insists on describing, like, sylvester trying & failing to hit someone with a wooden plank with the same gratuitous, lengthy detail as taylor inventing a spider-based saw trap for someone. and unlike the spider-based saw trap, it's not interesting to read about. the arcs take an episodic format, and what this means is that virtually every arc goes on way too long, contains at minimum 40% more tediously detailed fight scenes than are actually necessary, and then leaves you feeling jarred when wildbow inevitably timeskips to the next arc just as the prior one was really getting into the emotional swing of things. i also have a (quite possibly subjective?) sense that twig wasn't as well-developed and thought-out as, e.g., pact, and oftentimes the setting conceit (1900s biopunk frankenstein-y british empire) doesn't feel like it's hitting quite as hard as it should.

for all of these reasons, i wouldn't have rated the first ~13 arcs of twig any more generously than in the 3.5-4 star range while i was reading them, but that's still an overall rating of good. i wouldn't still be thinking about some of the things from the first ~13 arcs of twig if they weren't overall good. if all of twig was the same quality as the first ~13 arcs, i would recommend it to people who i feel like could tolerate the pacing issues & would feel reading about the lambs was worth it.

but. BUT. BUT-

Q: so, twig turns out really bad, huh? what went wrong? A:

it is not all the same quality as the first 13 arcs. it turns out really bad the last 7 arcs are actually atrocious

the first thing that comes to mind if you ask me "what went wrong with twig" is that wildbow tries to write a trans woman as one of the main characters, and he does it badly. miss jessie ewesmont, my new favorite girl whom we need to get the fuck out of a wildbow novel. i think she was written extremely well--and in fact one of the top 2 characters in the book--prior to wildbow trying to handle her coming out. i'd even say the foreshadowing for it was perfectly well done and enjoyable. but after she comes out, during the last 7 arcs of the book?

you know how trans women are often victims of being treated as undervalued, disposable girlfriends, who are expected to coddle & cater to their partner's every whim while receiving effectively nothing in return? and you know how trans women are often treated as if they should be grateful for receiving (what is often less than) the literal bare minimum? and you know how trans women are frequently treated as if it's completely implausible for anyone to find them genuinely attracted or desirable, let alone worth pursuing or putting effort into?

yeah, the last 7 arcs of twig contain untold tens of thousands of words of wildbow reinventing all of that from first principles. this is a subjective experience, but it genuinely felt worse to read than amy dallon. at one point, the Disposable Trans Girlfriend in question literally says "i appreciate you not killing me" after she gets stabbed in her sleep by her boyfriend, sylvester. it's beyond parody. i've never said "WE HAVE TO HIT WILDBOW WITH HAMMERS" more in my goddamned life than while reading the last 7 arcs of twig. Transmisogyny Fucking City. it's a completely unforgivable and miserable reading experience.

and speaking of unforgivable and miserable reading experiences involving bigoted handling of a main character...onto Item No. 2 on the list of writing decisions that ruin twig! the ableism.

wildbow wants all of the lambs to--due to being ill-fated human experiments--have set expiration dates. one of the Main Points hanging over the entire narrative of twig is that every single lamb is, in all likelihood, going to die of complications from the way they've been experimented on before they're even twenty. two of them do die from those complications before the story is even halfway over: jamie's entire mind & sense of being is regularly taken out of his body, and one day, the doctors can't get it back in. gordon is a ~15yo with the heart problems of an elderly man, and they kill him while he's still young enough to make one of his last acts begging to see his dog one last time. it's good. it's tragic, it's interesting.

the problem is that wildbow's decision for how to depict sylvester starting to experience end-stage complications is to...turn sy into an ableist horror movie trope villain. sy hears The Devil telling him to kill his friends, and he just fuckin' blacks out and then comes to like "oh no...what's all this blood on my hands." i'm talking "mental illness is a Demon that can Possess You and make you an Evil Serial Killer" levels of ableist writing. like wildbow straight up turns sy into the joker from the movie joker. it's like that one "insaaaaynenene....assyyylum..... cray-ay-zeee...Insaayne" tiktok, you know the one. it's why he stabs his disposable trans girlfriend.

and it's baffling because: 1. wildbow wrote worm. you'd expect better from him when it comes to writing mental illness. but his skills apparently stop short of being able to depict a character with psychosis without making it cartoonishly ableist. but also, 2., sy doesn't only start becoming mentally ill at the end of arc 13! the previous arcs do very clearly establish that he's extremely codependent with the other lambs and needs continuous support to avoid experiencing life-threatening mental health episodes. he experiences dissociation, he struggles with severe memory loss, he acts erratically, he has self-injurious tendencies, he hallucinates, he talks to himself in public. prior to the start of arc 14, all of that is written with perfectly amenable levels of nuance and empathy towards sy. i wouldn't describe it as glowing representation, or anything, but it's by no means egregious.

but after arc 13? change of plans. now he's the joker from the movie joker, and we have to watch while his friends chain him to an armchair so he doesn't go around randomly cutting peoples hands off in a murderous fugue state.

it's bad. it's extremely bad to read.

the third item regarding how/why twig becomes terrible is a lot more simple to summarize: it becomes almost entirely about the previously mentioned sloggy fight scenes as opposed to about the lambs. and when it is about the lambs, it's often terrible to read anyway, due to the aforementioned issues with the handling of protagonist sylvester lambsbridge and his disposable trans gf. the plot becomes incoherent and uninteresting to the point where it's not even worth the effort of attempting to summarize how or why. everything that made twig good more or less entirely disappears from the story, and things that make it fucking awful are added.

Q: okay but lets say i have something unfixably wrong with me and i want to read twig anyway. wheres the best stopping point? arc 13? A: yeah it's arc 13. it's not a satisfying stopping point at all though. nor is the rest of twig prior to it really worth it. just don't waste your time. go read a good book, like pact, instead

You know for a while I wondered what Astrid even did to spend the time out alone in Toføten before I realise that she and Loam are obviously having the exact same style of adventures that Hilda and Twig have on the regular. The only difference is that she’s the one who starts fights between weather spirits instead of calming them down.

FUN THOUGHTS i really like the idea of makeup emphasizing Aliveness, i think that's great. re the lab coats, the highest tier of coat is the black coat, so that's what you're gonna see associated with status.

the glasses situation is odd because wildbow does kind of note on it being weird with jamie, and he later writes a scene showing jessie cannot see w/o them, but then there's another scene even later implying that she can see just fine, and the purpose of them is to...reduce her FoV or something similar so she takes in less info? it's inconsistent and illogical and i think he never makes full note of how odd it should be. we do see other characters with glasses so truly i think he just forgor. my take on it is that glasses remain not-absurdly-uncommon as an accessory, especially among older people or people going for a Dignified Look, and people may be genuinely surprised if they learn a glasses-wearer they know needs their glasses. i'm of the opinion that something like getting your eyes replaced can be done So easily that it's virtually always going to be seen as an intentional statement, probably of the political sort. and i think this has additional implications you could invent re jamie and jessies glasses but thats beyond the scope of the post

Ok ok I'm going to stop trying to figure out twig fashion until I've read more of it but initial thoughts about ways that fashion styles could have developed differently than the real work

Rouging of the cheeks and lips and other makeup that emphasizes the wearers status as an alive person with blood who is not a stitched. Probably on trend

Probably as a consequence character like GinnyFray wearing especially dark lipstick or thick makeup that goes beyond a "natural look" is uncommon could possibly even be reminiscent of more dramatic styles of makeup that are used on Stitched to cover up the corpse look

Sy describes real world power structures existing but falling to the wayside in the academies so it's likely that students of the academy have looser standards of gender divisions in dress. However if one were to leave an Academy city and visit a town more controlled by the Church they would probably be branded as a Jezebel

Things like Jamie's glasses would probably also read different. In a non academy city it would be a standard issue disability aid, possibly a signifier of wealth. But in an academy city it would be seen as an inability or refusal to get surgical enhancements which would be considered bully able probably

Light colored clothes are always a sign of wealth because showing off clean and unblemished cloth in a place like Radham shows that you either don't do your own labor enough to get the clothes dirty, or that you have enough money to constantly buy new clothes. Also the academy lab coats are in white so off white and pastels would be more closely associated with symbols of power

In conclusion I think that fashion standards in academy cities and non academy cities are probably at polar opposites of cutting edge vs traditional. I mean this is true of the in universe cosmetic enhancements too. So probably there's more Edwardian wear on the fringes but the academies have their own version of the flapper movement going on. If one wanted to rebel against both power structures at once, attacking gender roles is a good place to start. Also bold colorful makeup that's more for the sake of having blue eyeshadow than it is to conform to beauty standards would also be counter culture. Too whorish for the church and the academy kids would just as soon change their eyes to blue.

and re last post as for how i would fix that issue if i were in charge of twig:

one: sy should not fucking run away. give him one chapter to stalk miserably around the town stewing in his thoughts before undergoing the character growth of admitting that he genuinely cannot do 62 hours away from jessie without ending up dead in a ditch somewhere & doesn't want to run away from conflict resolution with the person who's been his partner in crime and sole mutual support over the last few months.

two: during the conversation he and jessie were Supposed to have after he got back from his walk, force sy to undergo some goddamned fucking character growth over actually processing and internalizing the fallout of both the realization that he's not on equal ground with or fair to lillian no matter how much she likes him

three: also force sy to undergo some goddamned fucking character growth over grasping and sincerely, in his own sy way, regretting/wanting to amend doing some evil shit to jessie with the mental walls

four: this one is critical. i recognize that it's hard to fit this in following the heels of lillian but. i think you amend the issue of it being unpleasant to watch jessie having to bend over backwards for a mere Chance at sy theoretically liking her someday by having sy actually acknowledge that she's right and they Would be a good pair together. like have sy set aside the anger where he's getting bitter and sardonically going "what you want me to go make myself gay" out of clear revulsion for the idea of changing himself to be compatible with jessie--if jessie is going to change for him, then it's not fair that sy gets to be repulsed about the idea of changing for her.

i like jamie and jessie both being naturally gender apathetic and jessie deciding to transition to distinguish herself from jamie, and i could like her doing it to be more romantically compatible with sy, but i think in order for me to like that second part it would have to go the route of like. first of all sy takes culpability for his very very large part in the fight. second of all sy is like. "huh you know what. i would actually hypothetically make a good pair with you as a person i've been happily spending some of the best months of my life alone with. and maybe it would be nice to try feeling things out one day, even if it not immediately because of lillian, but i doubt something like getting a back alley doctor to rummage around in my brain is a good idea, no? this is sad i feel like we're missing out on something that couldve been good just by bad luck of i wasnt born as someone whos into boys or youre not someone who was born a girl" and jessie is like "no yeah i dont want someone to rummage around in your already wyvern-saturated brain i think it would not work and also you might die. however, re the girl part, i have some feelings ive been musing on,"

like. not necessarily over the course of even one immediate conversation, obviously not in those precise words. but if sy just One time got off his cishet ass to be decent to jessie and intentionally choose her or want to prioritize her feelings. Well then I would approve of their transhet biopunk brokeback mountain once more.

also. remove the part where jessie is like Ohhh unless it makes You uncomfortable for me to transition. let her keep being a hardass, let her want to do it either way, she can be noticeably nervous about sy's reaction without actually capitulating. she has that in her.

i’ve made this literal textpost before but i don’t have the time or energy to track it down so let’s just recap a few things FROM CANON HAIKYUU:

What really upsets me is that Prompto has good solid muscular biceps but at the same time he doesn't look like a boy who would have biceps at all and when you think about it, why does he have biceps? And while they're ok biceps they aren't exactly gladio's biceps so you don't notice them and he is such a beautiful fragile looking twink anyways, all the emotional vulnerability and hints of fear and his teeny waist and all that and by the time you realise he actually has pretty muscular arms you've already formed an internal attachment to your vision of prompto with gangly stick thin limbs that you could snap like a twig. Which sound violent but I promise I don't wanna break his arms I just think it's hot that he's tiny and gladio is huge and I'm not feeling even remotely sadistic towards prompto because he has suffered more than enough, they all have. i like ashton!! i think his deal is very simple and that's why wildbow was never able to fuck writing him up. he's just a little emotion-affecting pheremone-releasing mushroom shaped like a boy whose job is to be a special good little likable sir that contributes to the social manipulation side of what the lambs do. and he's also accidentally autistic due to all of that. he's like helen in that he's got some different parameters for how he processes the world, but he's still earnest and straightforward enough that it's really easy to understand him if you just know what parameters he's using. like, he really loves Colors And Patterns (autistic mushroom boy), so he cares about his breakfast having interesting bright colors in a spiral more than he cares about how it tastes. but it's not actually that alien, because like everyone else, he still wants his breakfast to be nice. he just wants it to be nice in the way that he considers to be nice.

his habit of, uh. looking at environments and people and using his Very Strong Imagination to mentally take everything apart, often in terribly violent ways, sounds weird at first blush yeah. but it's not like he actually goes around murdering people badly, because he understands that murdering people badly means that they die, which is bad for multiple reasons. contenting himself with staring out windows for several hours is weird, but he has a brain (or brain-like organ that is not a brain, to be more precise) that processes the world in a way that makes it like fun sight-watching for him, so actually it's perfectly understandable under those circumstances.

he likes hugs from his big sister helen, because they're nice and warm. he likes having conversations with his friends and trying to help them. he likes a children's book series that helps him understand the world and how he can interact with it. he likes trying to be polite, because being polite is good, and he likes when other people remember to be polite, too. he's just a funny little vat-grown mushroom boy whose methods of parsing and interacting with the world converge near-identically on autism. completely solid and endearing and fun character on every level who wildbow never managed to ruin....he truly is helen's little brother
