I was talking with a friend about digitally backing up my DVD collection and I was going to use "All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku" as an example of something that you can't find anymore, but then I went and checked and it actually has a blu-ray release.
Which pisses me off, because "Vandread" still doesn't even have a proper widescreen release.
So like, who makes the decisions about what does and doesn't get blu ray releases? Can you contact these people? Make suggestions? Look, I just wanna talk to them. I just wanna talk to them.

Vandread
This is incredibly random and I've not seen the anime all the way through but.... shouldn't Vandread be far gayer than it is? Like I get that it's a metaphor for discovering you have a different sexuality than your surroundings but like in the context of the anime. We have people from a planet of men and people from a planet of women, both of whom reproduce homosexually, on a ship together. So like why weren't there more gay couples?

SRW Y Wishlist Part 1
Okay, so before any official announcements of the other series included in Super Robot Wars Y come out, I'm going to list some series I would love to see in the SRW franchise, along with my reasons why. Some are new, some are returning, and none of the ones I've picked are specifically in the officially english translated games of the VXT trilogy or SRW 30. There are a few that are related to shows used in those games, but they aren't actually specifically in the games. And now, in no particular order:
Tumblr media
Martian Successor Nadesico (TV series): This is always a great choice for inclusion. It's might still be the best deconstruction of mecha anime as a genre, while also doing a fantastic job of blending humor and drama with interesting sci-fi concepts. A true classic.
Tumblr media
After War Gundam X (TV Series): First off, this is available to stream on Tubi right now, so you can go watch it for free if you haven't seen it before. Based in a post-apocalyptic reimagining of the Universal Century, Gundam X uses collections of short arcs to build a world in the shadow of a cataclysm sparked by the appearance of Newtypes. It also centers a love story between its young protagonists as they end up in conflict with those who wish to restart the conflict that nearly destroyed humanity 15 years prior. It's really good stuff, and sort of feels like a predecessor to the next series I'll mention.
Tumblr media
Eureka Seven (TV Series): This one is a bittersweet choice considering that none of the variations or follow-ups to the original series have every lived up to the potential of that show. Once again centered on the growing love story of its central protagonists, this one benefits from a deeper level of introspection on the flaws of the entire cast than Gundam X was able to really manage. They're both good, and they fit together well in the same game, but Eureka Seven is the superior show.
Tumblr media
Vandread (TV Series): So apparently around the year 2000, some anime creators actually started to understand the assignment when it came to creating a "battle of the sexes" story that wasn't pure cishet garbage. Vandread places a trio of men on a ship largely populated by women. The issue with that, of course, is that the two groups are from single sex planets that have been in conflict for a very long time. Forced to work together to survive, we get to see a deeper look into the various characters and their relationships with the experiences, expectations, and assumptions they hold about themselves and each other. The show is not queer enough in my opinion, but manages to touch on things entirely unexpected in most "men vs women" stories, most notably the idea of trans identity. It's an interesting show and I'd like to see a proper appearance in a mainline SRW game instead of just a mobile game.
Tumblr media
Eighty-Six (TV Series): I know the least about this one, but what I've heard is good, very much in the lineage of series like Area 88 or Votoms in terms of the brutality of war and invoking some shades of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled and Cross Ange but with a much more grounded aspect. Seems like it would be a great inclusion.
Tumblr media
Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Steel 7 (manga): So this is our first of 3 exceptions to the "not in the VXT" rule, except that the only appearance of this manga in those games was specifically the Crossbone Gundam X1 Full Cloth. The story didn't happen, and honestly, I kinda like the idea of the story on paper. Steel 7 is very much a "Seven Samurai" story with Tobia and a group of mech pilots from the previous Crossbone stories working together to stop a threat to the earth at great personal cost. What can I say, I'm a sucker for "Seven Samurai" stories.
I'll post the next set tomorrow, so look forward to it.

Please enjoy this anime opening parody of Baldur's Gate 3, cut with Astarion Origin footage, including the specific detail of Bandai credits with the fast paced sentences at the end. Like damn, this is incredibly spot on for a definitive time of anime openings.

11/27/24: Fleamarket finds for today, Wednesday! Not much for games but other media, yes. I came across a new mario Bros t-shirt for $6.00. For $7.00, it was four dvds and a generic SNES controller. And then a Johnny Cash cd for a buck and a bunch of pokemon cards in a little box for $7.00. The next pic is practically all movies. Just one lonely psp game. That I added to a growing stack of discs, I started fishing out of a table full of them. There were a lot of titles. But I have many of them already or dont align with my interests. But I'm a sucker for anime. I started seeing some early 2000s ones and a few normal dvds I didn't really have yet. So to the stack they go. I'm sure I have some of these shows already. But I couldn't say no to a dollar each. A few were even unopened. Total for the lot, and the psp game was $22. At another place I found six Asian martial arts blurays for $18. A decent day for stuff!

Feeling weird tonight, so I feel like talking about weird anime. What’s the weirdest anime you’ve watched—either willingly or under friendly duress?
For me, it’s gotta be Vandread. That anime is bizarre.
