Washington 'Alexander' Noble, named after his father but never uses his first name. It got too confusing as a child, and then he just stuck by his middle name.
19 years old when the bombs dropped, he was located in Nuka World training to be an Electrical Engineer at Nuka World. He survived because he had ear protectors in to use power tools next to the Nuka Quantum River Adventure. He didn't even hear the end of the world, it still rattles him that nobody bothered to fetch him.
Like the Nukalurks, the only source of water available for him as he cleared rubble to escape was Nuka Cola Quantum, turning him into a Quantum Glowing One. He has never worked out how to use his powers on command, leaving to a usual comical and poorly timed activation of them.
His main weapon is a sword, as the metal has become charged with his brand of radiation after years of using it. He can use it to create localised shockwaves, but struggles to use it on command. Anger helps to channel his powers, and his sword will glow blue if he is angered enough.
He has a hobby of fixing guns, and is well known for it in the places he frequents. He'll often offer to repair guns in an exchange of caps. Having this skill has made him well known with the Atom Cats who will often trade him Atom Cats branded leather for weapon repair.
He agrees with the morals of the minutemen, but doesn't run with them, thinking their methods too militaristic.
He finds his home in Goodneighbour, where he finds himself on an on again off again relationship with the mayor.
His horse and his dog have survived the fall of the bombs with him, and he is rarely seen without them both.

This is Arlen, he's kind of the de facto mayor of Little 81 (located at the scenic Kingsport Lighthouse). He was bumming me out after we had to fight some aliens together, so we huffed some jet and painted his leather armor.
Honestly, most fun I've had without Preston and it makes me sad that he just shook his head while Arlen and I did hard chems.

This is Cassidy the newest member of the Railroad. They were previously a vault dweller from vault 81 and decided they weren’t going to go back after venturing out. Cass was tired of the rules and regulations and braved the wasteland alone until running into a raider gang at the combat zone. She ran with the raiders for a few years before one of them betrayed her and tried killing her in her sleep for her chem stash. She killed the raider and was kicked out of the gang so she returned to the combat zone and met Cait. They became really good friends and started doing jobs on the side while the fighting business was slow. When business picked back up, Cass had to find work and ended up following the freedom trail after hearing a diamond city guard talking about it. She stumbled upon a cashe and found the password for the door in the old church and opened the railroad HQ. She was immediately interrogated and was told that if she does a few jobs for the railroad they’ll consider her as a potential agent. After proving her worth to deacon they become good friends and then she started working for the railroad under the name charmer. While she was out scavenging with deacon she found a publick occurrence newspaper on top of a bloodpack and read it. Hearing about the institute intrigued her and she made her way to diamond city. She eventually got interviewed by piper and saved nick and all that jazz and is now nick’s very best friend/maybe lover.

I wanted to go full "Fallout 2 Intro" on Vault 81, but they remind me too much of Vault 33, and I can't bring myself to open fire.

Overseer Olivette's Private Log - They Suspect
Burrow and Flint are getting restless in there. Collins and that robot - he's calling her Curie now - are keeping the mood relatively steady, but I think they already suspect that I have no intention of allowing them to implement a Stage III trial.
Not sure what to do. They've got access to the delivery nozzles. If they choose to, they'll be able to infect the population with whatever they want. Need to keep calm.

Something Questioned (At The Precipice Of Something New XL)
Upon their arrival to investigate Vault 81, Sturges and Hancock are sent through the wall into the hidden Vault and find something even stranger than they had expected? The Institute Directorate, disquieted by the way Father handled the incident at Greentech Genetics, begin to question if what happened at Greentech was really an accident? Alongside the General of the Minutemen, Nick Valentine and Ellie Perkins speak with his former colleague, Kenji Nakano, to get a grip on how best to get his daughter home safe from Far Harbour? Paladin Danse, Scribe Haylen, and Knight Rhys arrive at the Castle and have a stand off with its commanding officer, Colonel Ronnie Shaw of the Commonwealth Minutemen? A night at the Dugout Inn with Piper, MacCready, and Cait leads Nora to a revelation?
1/3 of the story through, 350.000+ words in. Read it on AO3, ff.net, and/or wattpad!!!

I think the main reason The Magnus Archives got the attention it did, in contrast to other, better, horror podcasts was 1. because there's two gay men in the core cast, and 2. something I've taken to calling the Sorting Hat Effect.
If a piece of young adult fiction has different categories the characters fall into, typically without their knowledge, consent, or involvement in the matter, people will go crazy with making sonas and OCs about it. Look at Percy Jackson, with the kids all having different godly parents and that designating what cabin they live in, and what powers if any they have. Look at Divergent with the different groups decided by some arbitrary and arcane test, I don't remember what they're called because it's been over a decade since I read it and I didn't like Divergent, next example. Look at Harry Potter with the Hogwarts Houses, chosen by magic hat and indicative of the character's soul or some shit.
All of these things are basically the fast track to characterization. They act as base templates for fans to build characters off of, and they're things that people can easily speculate on about themselves. If someone likes the piece of media they may even start to identify with the category. How many times have you seen someone with their hogwarts house proudly displayed?
The Magnus Archives uses this phenomenon extremely well. Smirke's 14 are teased out from from Season 1 but it isn't until episode 111 that all of them, their names, and their rituals, are explicitly told to the viewer. That's near the end of season 3, and shortly before the fandom began to really explode (from what I've gathered). The interesting thing about the world of TMA is that each character can belong to an entity among Smirke's 14, and simultaneously be haunted by one or more other entities.
When compared side by side with other horror podcasts, The Magnus Archives's horror is mid, its writing is mid, its characters are mid, its queerness is mid, and it owes its success to a writing device that suckles growing fandoms better than anything else I've ever seen. In short, 7.5/10, a decent gateway drug to better things.
Go listen to The Silt Verses, The White Vault, Hello From The Hallowoods, Archive 81, and Wolf 359. They're better.
(Oh and for the record I haven't listened to The Magnus Protocol yet)

My ultimate guide to horror podcasts ft. Sherlock and co. (a crime podcast) and the ballad of anne and mary (a pirate podcast)
The ones I've listened to in full length or until the last update have a rating
The ones with the pride flag feature a queer character. (I'm not so sure there, because my source has mostly been pinterest, so I could be wrong there)
They are sorted by length

hey can anyone give me recs for good spooky audio dramas?
Also bonus points if there’s gays in it (although honestly at this point I go into podcasts assuming there will be, and am hardly ever wrong)
Ones I’ve liked and listened to are: the Magnus archives, the box, king falls am, old gods of Appalachia, darkest night, limetown, spines, the bright sessions, wolf 359, all the public radio alliance ones, Alice isn’t dead, archive 81, life after, the message, the far meridian, the bridge, mirrors, the 12:37, penumbra, strange case of starship iris, girl in space, the leap year society, Mabel, and the white vault
