There was lots of concern about AI and deepfakes spreading misinformation this election cycle, so let's check in on that!

A lot of right-wing accounts are trying to prove that Kamala Harris' crowds are fake - that all the photos of them are generated with AI. We'll get to that, but let's look at the most...amusing example first.

There's lots of people pointing at an image of a crowd that's obviously been generated with AI, due to extra arms and gibberish writing.

So obviously someone generated this image with AI. Who was it and why? Well, we can actually find the origin pretty easily. It was...

A right-wing satire account. Who put "unexcited Kamala Harris crowd" into a AI image generator to make a "wow, crowds are electric!" joke.

An image their own side generated as satire is now being spread by the right as something Harris/Walz created as proof they're doing the thing they're doing. Incredible. Just a masterclass

Now let's look at the dark stuff.

By and large, AI isn't being used for hoaxes. AI is being used as a excuse: people aren't being tricked by AI images, they're being tricked by accusations real images are AI.

So this hoax went around recently...

This image is old. It spread in 2017, it spread in 2020, and now it's spread in 2024. The Harris/Walz rally wasn't even in the Phoenix Convention Center, or in Phoenix. But it's now a core part of the "no one's attending their rallies!" campaign going on now

This may seem strange if you experience the news by non-conservative media, where you can't escape stories of Kamala Harris filling up massive stadiums & of Trump rallies full of empty seats. All evidence in reality points to Kamala Harris being extremely popular and to Trump's campaign faltering.

But in MAGA land, Kamala Harris' crowds were generated with AI.

Their claims: the crowd isn't in the reflection, and uh, the arms look weird. But also that there "aren't any other images".

But? There are? There was a livestream of that very plane landing (starting at 25)!

They're subjecting what they think is The Only Image of this rally in long Youtube videos and on Twitter and TikTok, and just...don't realize there's full, uncut, commentary-free video of it that was broadcast live. So why don't they realize that?

Well, I did a search for this rally on Fox News' website and guess what? They reported it exactly twice: once a interview with her while leaving that slammed her for "not taking press questions" enough, and a few clips of the Palestinian protestors at it, but not many, bc if you don't follow the far right they're trying to frame Kamala Harris as, like, a radical pro-Palestinian (or, as they say, "pro-Hamas") activist who wants to destroy Israel which, uhhhhhhhh

But another thread I found debunking this, by a former Trump-voting evangelical conservative turned critic of the same, gets at the heart of it

People who said AI and deepfakes would be used to mislead the right were missing how misinformation actually works. Fox News et al don't suppress information by confusing the audience with misinformation; they suppress information by never letting them see it in the first place. They know that they have a captive audience who doesn't watch non-right-wing news (unlike the left, who are constantly aware of what's going on over at Fox).

They can just never mention or show Kamala Harris' rallies, or do so only in close-up, and they can frame Trump to only show shots where a crowd has gathered & make it seem like that's the norm, and their audience just has no chance to find out the truth. They're so propagandized that they just accept that there are no other images of that Kamala Harris rally, because, well, they were told there weren't, and would the news personalities they trust really lie to them?

And if any stray bits of reality float into the bubble, well, it was just AI. You know, how they have AI these days? AI's most important role in all this isn't as a vector for misinformation, it's as a rhetorical device for claiming real images and video are misinformation. You don't have to make images full of people with weird hands if you can get people circling real people's hands in red and pointing at it to prove reality was made in a computer.

These people don't know how popular Kamala Harris is. They don't know she's polling eight points higher than Trump. They don't know Harris is leading in right-wing biased polls. They're being told she's hiring actors at rallies, that her crowd photos are generated by AI, that Trump rallies are popular and hers are desolate.

This only likely to increase as we near the election because, well, Trump '24 is a shitshow. His campaign started out less popular than '16 or even '20, he picked maybe the worst VP pick in history, and he hasn't made a single effective attack on Harris/Walz. They were banking on facing Biden, and then on a chaotic open convention, but instead everyone closed ranks around Harris, and she instantly became the most popular Democratic candidate since 2008. We are cruising towards Trump/Vance not only losing, but losing in the closest thing to a landslide that's possible in our current system.

They're already laying the groundwork for, in the likely case of defeat, playing the "she stole the election!" card. Last time it was ad-hoc, because Trump thought he'd win. This time, they're already making "all her rallies are fake, all of her supporters are AI, they've already rigged it against Trump" a key strategy, and, I have to assume, their primary strategy as it gets closer to election day and the polls get worse. They've always lived in a bubble, but now it's a bubble designed explicitly to cause another January 6th. By claiming real photos have weird hands, and must totally be AI

fuck image generating You know what i want "ai" for? Automatically providing good ALT-text for every image uploaded to somewhere. Automatically generating useful subtitles and translations of any video uploaded to anywhere.

Make youtube et al. automatically add subtitles to every video, even the old ones, while/before it plays. I know it's possible.

Give accessibility tools for people, not crawlers. Give me automatic flashing/flickering lights and eyestrain warnings. I know it's possible.

Too many things that are necessary for people with impairments are optional. The internet is a very disability-unfriendly place.

i dont want to make post-game analysis this close to hl2vrai potentially coming out but like. if i dont get it out now when will i yknow. anyway i absolutely think gordon would have left the science team on his computer and done nothing to make any attempts to remove or save them. he never lost sight of the fact that they were video game characters, even when he was actively experiencing the game world as reality (ex. the hand thing, general fearing for his life even though its a viddy game). why would he devote time to something thats probably just not possible and even if it was, would only benefit people who he kind of hated and/or was terrified of. im not saying i condone that decision just that, from gordon's pov, it makes sense.

except from the science team's perspective the goal was always to Get Out. yeah out of black mesa during the resonance cascade but if that was the only actual goal why didnt they give up and fall into despair once coomer learned that there was Nothing Outside? because they wanted to escape into reality, where their sentience would be able to exist, rather than having to fight against 2010s ai programming just to keep existing. and gordon promised that he'd lead them there. he'd get them out. and to the science team that made sense! because gordon was Real, and a Scientist, so he'd be able to help them. even though gordon the streamer is just a normal streamer who downloaded a weird evil mod.

the science team is overall comically bad at communicating goals basically. they're all operating on completely different wavelengths (and i can explain exactly What wavelengths in another post) and that leads to things like. hand. boss fight. abandoning your new computer friends in processing hell forever because you can't fully comprehend that they're real. trying to climb inside your friend and wear him like a skin suit. et cetera

hello, I'm back from the Annecy festival! it was as amazing as ever - I'm working on a proper writeup about it for my site, hopefully sometime this week.

fave things I saw included Death Does Not Exist which is gonna be a hard fave, one of the best animated films I've seen; Shinya Ohira's extraordinary short film Black; Hyakuemu; Housenka; Planètes; the Hungarian programme block on Réka Bucsi, WTF2025, Amélie et la Métaphysique des tubes and (for all its endearing jank) Nightmare Bugs. I can't wait til I can share them with people.

I did not see the overall winner of the feature film category, Arco, or a lot of the Contrechamp films this year, or even a couple of the short film blocks - despite seeing films pretty much every available hour, it remains the case you could do three Annecies over and have a completely disjoint festival each time.

of course the true joy of Annecy is not just its film deep cuts, but the sheer vibe of being in a city with thousands of animation people for a week. I got to meet the authors of Animation Obsessive and spend hours chatting away with them - sometimes you meet someone who's on the exact same special interest wavelength you are and that's those guys, and they've been writing some lovely coverage of the festival over there. also got to hang out and do some drawing with some of the ButaPro guys (FAR et al.), who were awesome. but equally there's just randomly getting to know animation students on buses, or chatting with people in the queues, or sitting in a theatre and watching the paper planes fly.

I just really love film festivals, and this one especially!

the students I met seemed to really like the stuff I'd made like Incubator, which was a pleasant surprise! I think I'm finally getting to the point where I've got all the techniques I need down enough to start telling stories with animation, and of course I'm all fired up about all things animation after being immersed in it in a place like Annecy...

for all the fears that grip the industry at the moment (so many industry talks titled things like 'Animation in the age of AI'), the actual films we are creating are so fucking aesthetically ambitious and varied - really underlining just how many tools we've cultivated to explore aesthetic space. I only saw one film in the festival that used AI video generation, in the highly experimental Off-Limits category. it was a self-referential film about the idea of art that leaned into the surreal morphing jank of AI to get some laughs, and frankly it wasn't much.

I did visit the Mifa trade show area at one point, where I found (in one small booth) some Japanese guys trying to sell people on their ComfyUI-integrated tool for tweaking character expressions with sliders, but it was fairly jank (at one point generating open eyes on top of closed ones) and I'm not convinced it would be practically useful, it just seemed like a harder-to-control version of a 3D rig. (though it was hard to have a discussion of any technical details talking through the interpreter, all I was really able to get is that it's apparently not a diffusion model). so, I think we can breathe easy about the supposed AI job apocalypse for another year. equally, my wish for a film that really does something interesting with AI remains unfulfilled.

I'll leave it at that for now, pending a more substantial writeup where I can pick out some of my fave shorts. but yeah, a really good festival. can't wait for it to come round again. they're apparently adding a whole new building with a new cinema, which might give some relief to the queues - they were especially brutal this year.

on the way home I got stuck in Frankfurt for a day because airline shenanigans! I made the best of it and visited Goethe's (rebuilt) house and the Deutsches Romantik Museum, so if you catch me standing with a yearning look before a vast empty seascape or something like that, you give my shoulders a good shake. (for real, very cool museum, hope I can visit Frankfurt again at some point when anything else is open because apparently Monday is museum closing day...)

Je scrollais tranquille sur tiktok quand un collage d'une interview avec un.e aroace est passée sur ma fyp. La personne qui faisait le collage a commencé à faire des blagues (?) A propos des labels. Au début, je croyais que c'était inoffensif, juste quelqu'un qui s'amusait à faire des métaphores et allégories avec les identités aroaces (j'en ai déjà vu des bien drôles avant, alors je croyais que c'était ça).

J'ai ouvert les commentaires en m'attendant à voir des gens sympas en rajouter sur le sujet et partager leurs expériences en tant qu'asexuel.le.s et/ou aromantiques. Bah non, la personne se moquait de nous. Et elle en rajoutait, disant comme quoi que de nos jours les gens faisaient juste se créer un label pour pouvoir faire partie de la communauté et qu'il fallait arrêter de s'inventer des nouvelles lettres à l'acronyme lgbt. En légende, 《 C'est à cause de vous que les LGBT on est pas pris au sérieux 》.

Après avoir réalisé l'horreur devant moi, j'ai signalé la vidéo et je me suis rendue sur son profil. IEL A EU L'AUDACE DE METTRE 'BE YOU BE PRIDE' EN BIO!!!

Had a stitched tiktok show up on my fyp of an interview at pride with an aroace. The person stitching started making jokes (?) about labels. I thought it was inoffensive at first, just someone having fun making metaphors and allegories with aroace identities (I've seen very funny ones before so I thought that was it).

I opened the comments expecting wholesome people expanding on the matter, sharing their experience as asexuals and/or aromantics. Turns out op was making fun of us. About how people nowadays were just labeling themselves cuz they wanted in and we had to stop adding so much to the lgbt acronym. The caption was "it's because of you that us LGBT aren't taken seriously".

Upon realizing the horror, I signaled the video and head to their profile. THEY HAVE THE GAL TO WRITE 'BE YOU BE PRIDE' IN THEIR BIO!!!

What. The. Hell.

Even upon being corrected and educated in the comments, they kept insisting that aros and aces were going too far and we should just stop decredibilising """""real"""""" lgbt.

I thought it was wholesome, but really it was hell.
