Hey did anyone else think that the royal guards just regularly went and invaded Varian's home to try and get that scroll during the month(s?) between queen for a day and quest for Varian, or just me.

Cause Varian definitely knew they were going to be watching, and the guards (and king) knew about the scroll before Rapunzel did, how else would they know to try and keep it from her. That means they've been keeping track of what Varian is doing, unless he, like stole the scroll from the castle (which... he would do.)

I think it's interesting and could add to his motivation. And it gives Varian even more reason not to trust his government/the king/ authority in general, because they're abusing their power in ways that are actively putting him in danger. The king knows about the rocks, buy is suppressing any information about the issue from getting out, and preventing people from trying to find solutions. And that's on top if the fact that right now everyone thinks Varian attacked Rapunzel, no one trusts him, and people think he's a threat. The guards are going to treat him like one.

I think it helps make his jump to treason make a but more sense. Obviously his dad being stuck in amber, the people in his town abandoning him, and getting thrown out of the castle when he asks for help are all very stressful on there own and would push anyone's limits, but Varian is a good kid, he has had a history of respecting authority and wanting to help others. For his perspective to shift enough that he would lie to and manipulate Rapunzel, and commit various acts if treason, I think something more serious would have to happen... like the leaders he trusted to protect him actively Not Doing That

Also it's good for angst.

Or maybe he stole it from the castle... which is absolutely something he would do, but the guards would still be trying to get it back

Normally I have a strong distaste for black-haired, socially awkward and overpowered MCs who achieve impossible feats.

But when said MCs are unreliable narrators? When they casually downplay or don't even think to mention some extremely important parts of their pasts, which start to seep through their narration and which makes you look at the story in slowly dawning horror? I eat that shit up.
