I've been tracking this down for a while now and I've finally found confirmation of what I suspected: Google Maps imagery for Piha Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand captured the setup for filming of Our Flag Means Death's Season 2, Episode 8!

[EDIT 25 June: the north end current imagery is sadly no longer this version, but I've captured it for posterity here, and it's still visible in the free Google Maps Pro app- read on for more info].

On the left is the north end of Piha Beach with the inn set. On the right is the south end carpark with the film crew base.

Why is that cool to me? Because it truly was a fleeting moment in time, no more than a handful of days of possibility, and yet it was captured as the image on the map, at least for a period of time. As an archaeologist I love a moment preserved in time, and in this one you can even see the OFMD production crew on the beach and on the path. It's places and people caught in the flashbulb of this aerial image.

The specifics of how I pinned down the imagery and the date are in this Twitter thread, but the short version is, I was hunting for a better visual on the area immediately surrounding the inn while writing Full Fathom Five, and noticed that the carpark in particular seemed to line up exactly with images from the final day of filming.

The final day of filming overall was 13 December 2022, filming at Piha was on 12 December 2022, and this aerial image was taken on 11 December 2022.

I had already been through the first image to make a comparison to the aerial map and it looked like a match, but Google Maps had 2024 in their attribution. [Noting that I'd put 13 Dec on my image notes, but I'd got that tangled with the last day of filming in the Kumeū studio the next day, and it was 12 Dec on location].

Thankfully Google Earth came through with the actual date.

And I just took a further dig into Google Earth Pro, which allows you to switch between previous satellite images, and it confirms a date of 11 December 2022 for the north end image as well.

[EDIT 9 September 2024- thinking about this again and suddenly realised... you know what, very often things will put the date it was in the US when a picture was taken, even when that picture was taken on the other side of the world, in a different timezone. Which made me realise that actually, if this was taken on the 11th of December in the US, that was on the 12th of December in AoNZ. A quick search shows that Google Maps confirms the date can be one day out, so- odds increasing that we're seeing the actual filming of Ep8 here!]

You can also compare this to a few months earlier in March 2022, right around the premiere of OFMD S1 (everything moved so fast in hindsight!) when there was no inn in that spot.

Which means we now know that for now, if you hop onto Google Maps (not Google Earth, because they have a different image for the north end that does come from 2024) and zing on down to Piha Beach, you can take a look at a preserved moment in time from the filming of S2Ep8.

Everything that was/is shown at the north end lines up with what we've seen both in the show and in behind the scenes content, all of which I delved into in this Twitter thread last month. That goes into a lot more detail about specifics, but the evidence is solid across the board.

The sandy path that runs beside the inn is a distinct feature seen in the show.

Based on all of that, it's easy to see that we've got our inn right here circled in red, preserved in that moment in time, even though it was no doubt taken down as soon as filming was done.

Prep looks like it took a couple of days before filming; filming was pretty much done in a day, according to an article at the time.

So, there you have it- it's a minor little thing and it won't be up forever, but for now you can hop into Google Maps and see an aerial view adjacent to the filming of S2Ep8 at Piha. The other beach scenes from Eps 1, 3 and 8 were filmed at Te Henga/ Bethells Beach.

When the fuck is everything happening??? In 2018 (S1) or 2019 (Yingdu)?

Picking up from the discussion in the replies under @kuschelkissen’s post...

The year Doudou was kidnapped, Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi spent their summer* break abroad—we now know this trip was to Yingdu.

*Summer months in China are June-August

The kidnapping and the Yingdu trip happened 3 years before the events in season 1, which took place in 2021:

Three years ago would be 2018—which means ShiGuang should’ve already met by then and grown close enough to be on a trip together. But as we’ve seen in YE1, Lu Guang hasn’t moved in with CXS yet by the end of the Anime Con, which was on June 10, 2019:

The Vivian case started right after…which means that ShiGuang establishing their partnership also happened later since that took place afterward. Notably, throughout the Vivian case, the date was never once shown. But it’s safe to assume that it started on the same day/the day after Anime Con.

So, summing it up so far, ShiGuang has not yet met/formed a partnership in 2018, which they should’ve already done to be able to go to Yingdu together, as implied in S1.

I tried to look for frames showing the actual year Doudou was kidnapped, but guess what I found instead:

If the entire date was in Xs, I could’ve just brushed this off as a design choice to show that the actual date doesn’t matter. However, they purposely revealed 3 digits for the year, leaving only the rightmost digit hidden: 201X

The year being 2021 is prominent throughout season 1:

The kidnapping case taking place three years ago was also mentioned several times. Doing the math is easy, so why still hide the 8 in 2018? Why not just have the entire year in Xs to make it uniform with the month and day?

Did the kidnapping and Yingdu trip actually happen in 2018? If yes, then ShiGuang meeting and partnership should’ve happened much earlier. It doesn’t align with what we’ve been shown in YE1 (partnership established some time after June 10, 2019).

There’s still room for the first meeting date actually taking place in 2018, since the year it happened was never shown. We can only infer that it took place on an April 11 from the date on Cheng Xiaoshi’s phone (April 12) and the text he sent (which uses the word ‘tomorrow’):

However, I’m gonna trust the directors’ scene order choices here. Let’s just assume Yingdu Chapter has ShiGuang first meeting on April 11, 2019.

I’d like to think the confusion here over 2018 vs 2019 is simply due to an error in the anime. Maybe it’s actually just 2018. Or maybe they decided to change the kidnapping/yingdu trip to two years ago instead of three… But such discrepancy on a deliberate detail seems unlikely, especially for Link Click.

Did something happen that the events (first meeting and partnership establishment) are happening a year later than they’re supposed to be? Could Lu Guang be trying to prevent the Yingdu trip?

(Also, wasn’t it mentioned before that ShiGuang met in high school? Why is Lu Guang already a university freshman in the basketball match in Yingdu??? Why are he and CXS still wearing high school uniforms???)

Hi! To be honest I would love for bychance to happen, that'd mean more story and screen time for Will, yay! But I just don't see how it could in the packed 8-episode final season of ST. No way the writers are gonna devote time for this. Will already has the UD storyline and the Mike/sexuality storyline, there are TONS of other characters, not to mention flashbacks, Henry stuff, etc. Also, the Duffers are not gonna confuse the audience further by bringing another LI this late in the game. Will is already in a love triangle, they won't make it a love square. This isn't a teen queer drama. Will's story has actually been pretty simple and straightforward: he's connected to the UD and he's fallen in love with Mike, that's what it's been like for the past 4 seasons. They're not gonna complicate things now. And lastly I also don't think it matches Will's personality to hook up with Chance while knowing he's in love with Mike 🤷‍♀️

So, there you go, these are my thoughts about it. I enjoyed reading your bychance posts though!

As for the timeline: 

We know Will’s emotional arc ties the whole series together, and with the limited screen-time we have ( 8 movie-long episodes ), this means NO SCENE INVOLVING WILL IS FILLER. Everything would serve a purpose, including bychance scenes.

This is to say: bychance is strategically placed. it is not designed to ‘confuse’ the audience--its intent is to help unveil Mike’s POV without it feeling forced, last moment and overly sanitized. if you're curious, I made a speculative timeline of how I picture it being structured.   

GA reaction:

S4 already laid down the groundwork to make the GA root for Will’s romantic happiness. Their reaction might include initial shock, sure, but not confusion.

“whaat? ok yknow what? good for him, he deserves love too.”

They’ll be invested/intrigued too until we start to see the cracks in the dynamic ... by paralleling Mileven ( ft Stancy/Boyce all the Doomed From The Start ships ).

Consider the importance of these two being mirror relationships, it is VITAL to a Byler pay-off. Mileven CANNOT BE RETCONNED--rather, recontextualized. 

What to expect: Aside from the obvious visuals ( El and Will look alike, similarly to how Mike and Chance look alike ) imagine Will trying to connect with Chance but Chance only interested in the physical aspect of the relationship, as in S1 Mike trying to connect with El by showing her his toys + S3 Mileven making out all summer and the subject of what El liked never coming up. Add a slice of S1-S2 Stancy and even S2 Boyce into that mix and voila, the Duffers have shown, not told, the audience what Mileven truly was all along.

This allows the GA to connect the dots on their own without Mike having a sudden gay awakening ( either through Vecna or on his own ) at the end right as Will is about to die or whatever high stakes situation happens ( *main GA argument AGAINST Byler is this being the ONLY WAY they see Byler becoming endgame-- ) 

This matches my current understanding of the consensus amongst Bylers of how Byler will happen:  - Mike breaks up with El → Mike and Will fight about the painting and either a) get together or b) fight is left unresolved and they get together at some point fighting the supernatural/at the end. 

That’s basically also what the GA thinks and they literally do not buy it ( and quite frankly? Neither do I. )

Bylers have also been historically WRONG about the direction Byler will go. So I'd expect they are wrong about this too.

its not a matter of whether or not Bychance is POSSIBLE or even DOABLE in a perfectly pristine way, rather, it boils down to a matter of intention and execution.

more dynamics i need to see in st5 for my mental wellbeing

1. el and dustin. that’s it send post. they were genuinely so sweet in season 1 and i miss their mad scientist/test subject vibe immensely. i know el and lucas are going to be paired up this season because of their shared connection (polyamory) to max, but i would love to see more scenes between dustin and el— maybe some lighthearted bonding over their matching leg injuries or daddy issues.

2. mike and robin. i don’t think you understand i need this like i need air. will has already had his gay awakening he doesn’t need a queer life coach!! mike on the other hand is out here in the TRENCHES. this man is down critically horrendously morifyingly BAD for will but is convinced el needs him and that will could never reciprocate his feelings. he needs robin’s gay intuition and advice if anyone does.

3. steve and jonathan. HELLO??? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELLO???? i know this is pretty much guaranteed to happen in st5 because full-circle character development and hammering in themes and blah blah blah but i’m still gonna talk about it because listen. steve got his shit rocked by jonathan one (1) time and immediately decided “fuck my idiot friends” developed a moral conscience and SHOWED UP AT HIS HOUSE to apologize. he wasn’t there for nancy he had no idea nancy was there!!! he bought jonathan a new camera!!! he was so respectful of nancy and jon even when nancy dumped his ass a season later!!! yet we never get closure between him and jonathan or even a conversation and i’m PISSED about it. matt and ross duffer rectify this or else.

4. hopper and jonathan and will. you see the vision. these kids have never had a stable father figure who truly understands them (i love bob but he was only there for st2 and was sweet but naive) and everything they’ve been through. jonathan DESPERATELY needs to be de-parentified and released from the emotional burden of constantly putting will and joyce before his own needs and dreams, and hopper desperately needs to feel like he can protect his family instead of “cursing” them. will needs a loving father figure who supports his queer identity, and hopper only had a fire lit under him in s1 when joyce mentioned it could have been a hate crime. this is like textbook recipe for healing and closure for these characters.

5. joyce and karen? i just think it would be neat. we know karen’s getting more involved this season and i think she should get to be a little gay for joyce as a treat. we had crumbs of their dynamic in s1 and on a more sincere note i honestly think joyce could help give karen the courage to leave ted or demand better from him moving forward.

6. nancy and mike. if they don’t have a genuine conversation i’ll actually be fuming raging pulling my hair out. i get it i get that they’re both emotionally repressed but GOD i wish we had more moments with them talking about their trauma or empathizing with each other’s survivor’s guilt and crippling savior complexes. all the “max and mike are the same character in a different font” business is very valid and i agree madwheeler is like ten shots of espresso injected directly into the bloodstream HOWEVER, nancy and mike’s traumas and emotional issues are so so similar please let them talk about it!!!!

7. steve and robin???? please for the love of god????? literally what the fuck was happening in s4 they were NOT given enough screentime together. not cool. i want them BACK on their queerplatonic bullshit in s5, fully codependent disgustingly clingy like god intended.

8. jonathan and el. i just want them to be siblings together!!! we got a lot of willel sibling vibes in s4 and some sweet jon-and-will moments, but i would love for them to delve into jonathan and el’s dynamic. this girl is a big reason why will was saved in s1 and we just… never really see the byerses address that? jonathan has a lottt of self-blaming tendencies when it comes to will and i’d love for el to help remind him he isn’t responsible for protecting and saving his brother all the time. conversely, i’d love for jonathan to remind el that she’s just a kid and that the weight of the world shouldn’t be on her shoulders. they’re both really soft-spoken and sweet characters with hard veneers and i feel like they’d pair well together for more emotional scenes.

9. literally the entire byers-hopper family they are the heart and soul of the show and i will never forgive the duffer brothers for losing that in s3-4 in favor of expanding the scope of the story. i miss them.

10. steve and el. i would maim and kill for this dynamic actually. both of them are involved in love triangles and have arcs centered around independency and platonic/found familial love, and steve has his whole mom-of-the-group shtick that could be really endearing paired with el’s plucky weird-little-girl vibe. idk i just think they would be a cute team, maybe paired with dustin or lucas.

11. stoncy and robin. literally give me this team or give me death. i miss stoncy’s iconic end-of-season-1 monster-hunting trio dynamic SO MUCH i would give anything for them to go on a sidequest and really just hash it all out with each other. and robin could offer steve moral support and comic relief— while we’re on the subject i would also kill to see her and jonathan interact!! like they are so similar in that brooding-noncomformist way and i feel like they would either immediately gravitate toward each other based on values OR immediately clash due to their personality differences. jonathan is all quiet and avoidant and robin can be… A Lot (said with love) when she’s not masking like s3. i just think they’d be funny together.

Anyway I just realized that Cutter and Rachel kind of remind me of two people from TMA, HMMMMMMM I WONDER WHO.

It's Elias and Rosie

Now hear me out, what if Elias and Cutter...were dating while all the shit was going on? And hey they still get to see each other in hell cause they're both ded. Also I can see them having a similar relationship to King Dice and Devil from the Casino Cups comic. Their kink is absolutely just threatened to kill each other and then laugh it off like what they said meant nothing.

I also ship Rosie and Rachel together but I imagine rosie is taller than Rachel, like the two met through their bosses, well Elias and Cutter I'd like to imagine they met in highschool, you know the two rich kids. So you know what? I'mma make a RoleSwap of The Magnus Archives and Wolf 359, here's the characters and yes I'm trying to mimic these by their personalities.

The Magnus Archives:

1. Hilbert: will be Jonathan Sims because out of all the other characters, he fits Jon's personality the most. So he is the Avatar of the Eye

2. Minkowski: Will be Martin and just a heads to you guys all, the storyline of the characters relationship will shift slightly because NO, I am not shipping those two together, plus I do Headcannon Hilbert being a AroAce Gay person and Minkowski is out Bisexual Queen and yes, she's still married in this RoleSwap :3

3. Eiffel: It's pretty obvious who he's going to be, but I decided to go for Tim because their personalities really match together, honestly I can see them being friends. He basically likes to annoy Hilbert just like how Tim annoys Jon.

4. Hera: In the TMA au she's an android human so kind of like the game "Detroit Become Human" and she's playing the role of Sasha!! It fits also because Tim and Sasha are besties in TMA and so are Eiffel and Hera so it's literally perfect!

5. Lovelace: She was kind of hard to put down but I decided for Lovelace to be Daisy, she fits with daisy's personality not fully, but close enough and I like it that way. Also not to mention I did say if she was in TMA her avatar would be the Hunt which is also Daisy's avatar.

6. Maxwell: She is Basira in the au, I don't know, I feel like it fits the closest cause she is somewhat similar to her in a way? And yes also because I ship Maxwell and Lovelace.

7. Jacobi: He's Georgie because for some reason I do actually see him try being friends with Hilbert. And plus besides Eiffel he's also the type to not want to get dragged in lots of messes. He's caring and pretty chill, also instead of a pet cat like Georgie, I gave him a pet dog which is a Bernese Mountain Dog.

8. Kepler: lastly Kepler is Melanie it fits well because they're both I do like being the avatar of the Slaughter. And also because he dislikes Hilbert like how Mel dislikes Jon. Plus yes bonus points for Jacobi x Kepler.

Wolf 359:

1. Jon: Jon will be Hilbert in the RoleSwap but he is less sciencey freaky like Hilbert but more of how he acts in S1. He still does go through with the experiments it's just that he actually tells the others.

2. Daisy: She will be Commander Minkowski, I was going to choose Georgie at first because she is technically a lieutenant or a captain in The Magnus Protocol, but I chose Daisy because she had a more authoritative voice and her appearance is more appealing. Also yes because I want to see her bond with Tim and Jon.

3. Tim: It's obvious who Tim will be, yes the Officer Doug Eiffel. Relatively speaking I can actually see Tim being related to eiffel in a way because of the way they act, so probably close cousins. Though unlike Eiffel in a way he agrees to be Jon's lab rat because he's also curious about the Decima virus which surprised Jon but he went a long and did it anyway.

4. Sasha: Sasha will be Hera because their personalities are very much linked up. They're both smart, and Sassy queens which I love about them. I also want to see those two annoy the hell out of Jon while he's trying to have some peace and Quiet.

5. Melanie: She is Captain Lovelace, Mel I can conquer that she is capable of taking care of herself and she is slightly aggressive which is perfect for Lovelace. I was tied between using Mel or Daisy but i ended up with Mel instead because even if Daisy did try to kill Jon it was one time, and it was because she was trying to do her job but Mel wants that man Dead.

6. Basira: She is Maxwell their personalities are matched except Basira is more slightly isolated with her work and rarely does talk. But she's actually a chill person, never knowing what she might be doing, always lurking away in the shadows.

7. Martin: Martin is Jacobi I can see them actually being friends slightly if Martin wasn't much of a loner, but they both have similar attitudes and also I need to see more of Martin and Basira because their little interactions in TMA are so cute and funny, they act like cousins which is adorable. Also because he does tend to follow orders quickly without questioning anything yet.

8. Georgie: Lastly georgie is Kepler, she fits his role because I do think she had more of a laid-back and threatening personality than Daisy. She's funny and sarcastic at times but can be serious and aggressive when she's needed to.

Alright that was all of them, the rest of the characters are pretty much the same aside from Cutter and Rachel are swapped with Elias and Rosie of course. Anyway some parts of the story will shift so it will make sense, and no these roles that I pick will not include me shipping some of them so yeah. Also the reason why I'm combining these two is because I want Wolf 359 to get popular in this post, I want these fans to come out from their hidden cave and just arise from the dead. Can you expand on how they are implied to be closer offscreen than what is shown?

It's mostly in background details in a couple episodes!

First, episode 4: Miorine invites Suletta to stay in her room overnight to help her with her upcoming test (In the novel it's stated that Suletta doesn't yet have a dorm and has been staying at an on-campus hotel). We get a good look at her room (it's actually pretty small) during these few scenes, but looking around, it becomes clear that there is only one bed in the room, and during their conversation that night, when the camera angles back towards the living space, there isn't a 2nd mattress set out.

So they almost certainly shared Miorine's bed that night.

Episode 8: After the founding of GUND-Arm Inc, Miorine starts researching the GUND Format and the history of GUND technology. We see her lying in bed, looking at her phone, with TWO tablets on the bed around her. One is hers, but the other? It could only be Suletta's. And by this point Suletta is living at the Earth House dorms, so she's still coming by to spend nights in Miorine's room even while having her own place to sleep. We don't see the room itself or where Suletta is in this scene, but they may still be sharing Miorine's bed.

Episode 19: In the aftermath of the last two episodes, Suletta is shown lying in bed, burying her face in a pillow. But she's lying the wrong way, with her feet at the top of the bed with another pillow, presumably the one she normally sleeps with. The other pillow? Probably Miorine's, and Suletta is burying her face in it because she finds Miorine's scent comforting.

The girl's dorms at Earth House show 6 bunks, with one pillow each. Suletta, Nika, Chuchu, Lilique and Aliya account for 5 occupants, leaving one spare bed (and pillow). Miorine is almost definitely doing most of her GUND-Arm Inc. work out of Earth House, and she probably spent nights there, sleeping in the spare bunk. Suletta, hurt and seeking any sort of comfort, steals Miorine's pillow from her bunk to take into bed with her.

Most of the investigative work from this I got from these two tweets.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to take Suletta & Miorine's relationship the way it's presented in the show, and the pace at which it develops, at face value. But in light of Bandai's statement regarding their relationship, and some of the rumors (like the kiss scene), I feel like it's safe to say that Bandai suppressed the way the staff was allowed to depict their relationship.

Showing Suletta & Miorine sharing a bed, even in a completely chaste manner, was probably a no go. They definitely weren't allowed to show them kissing, saying "I love you" to each other and obviously the word marriage and the actual wedding were off limits.

So instead we get little background details like this showing they're closer off-screen than we're allowed to see. We get scenes in episode 11, 17 and 22 that are clearly supposed to be a confession, proposal and kiss, but the wording had to be changed and the kiss had to be changed to a more subtle intimate interaction. They couldn't show a wedding, have anyone say the two were married or have them call each other wife, so the staff added the "Sister-in-Law" line to make their marriage explicit without drawing Bandai's ire.

Personally, I think the staff wanted to have them kiss AND show the wedding on screen, but were stopped by Bandai. There's clearly some foreshadowing to a kiss in S1, especially with El5n almost kissing Suletta, and I wonder if they were originally going to kiss in episode 11. Their marriage and wedding is built up throughout the show, starting from the very first episode, and in episode 17 Suletta clearly talks about how she wants to have a ceremony with pretty dresses and matching rings. And just look at some of the artwork some members of the staff drew in the "unofficial" staff artbook showing Suletta & Miorine married or being intimately close once they were off Bandai's leash.

And then there's the song "The Way We Wanna Go", an absolutely beautiful song with a title befitting a couple moving forward together. It's got vocals by Clara Sorace just like The Witch From Mercury, Aerial Rebuild, Quiet Zero and Liberation From The Curse, all major themes for major moments in the show, but The Way We Wanna Go wasn't included in the show. I personally believe it was going to play during their wedding at the end of the show, but the wedding was replaced by the epilogue and the song was replaced by Houseki no Hibi in the process.

bucktommy proposal end of season 8 or start of season 9?

i mean what do I want? obviously sooner than later. I really do believe in the logic that we've seen stated about Bobby and Athena in relation to what Frank said in (I think) 702, that when who people work in the field, they understand the immediacy. I also think that you have two characters who have been through the wringer in their personal lives, and if this show is really going to let them have their happy ending, I don't see it being a long, drawn out process. For Maddie and Chim, it made sense. Healing from DV is a process, and she needed to be able to trust him. By correlation, Evan has always been seeking someone who would match his attachment style and not be turned off by how his abandonment issues affect him in relationships. Add to this the fact that I feel like Evan's highest love languages are physical touch and quality time (although quality time may also be competing with acts of service; we could argue removing physical touch, but I think that being a love language for him is clearest in s1 with his self-diagnosed sex addiction). Still, even in season 7, he's always touching people he cares about. His hand on Eddie's shoulder when Chris leaves; the hug with Bobby (both in 710), the kiss in the hospital in 706. Even the hands on Chris's shoulders in 709 from the stills.

By relation, I think Tommy's similar, with acts of service and quality time being his top two. I'm less inclined at the moment to say physical touch is as high for him, because we haven't had enough of out, therapized Tommy to really gauge it. Still, the acts of service is obvious. He shows up for those he cares for (flying into a hurricane, showing up to the wedding even after fighting a fire all night and day). And we know he's not just showing up for Evan to sleep with him; we've seen dates, dinner together, actually showing up for one another.

Ironically it's both of these that get me wondering if we'll be waiting into s9 purely just because I don't think that receiving gifts ranks very high for either of them. I honestly think we'll see them moving in together with more importance placed on it because that directly correlates to quality time AND acts of service. Truth be told, I think when a proposal finally happens between these two, I think Tommy will be the one to ask, because it's something Evan wants, and as stated, acts of service are important to Tommy. Still, I think if we're lucky enough to see it happen, we might be waiting a while. Again, I could be wrong, given the discussion Bobby had with Frank in therapy about not putting off more time than necessary to be together when you know life is limited (and this will be another relationship with two first responders who are in dangerous positions). But realistically? I think we'll see moving in together in s8, and then maybe a proposal in s9. I legitimately could see B/T getting completely domestic with a home, an animal (maybe even a kid) before they even make it down the aisle.

8. Now What? (S7)

I've read that this episode was severely and abruptly rewritten and re-shot, and I think that shows: not a lot happens, and most of the episode is really about killing time and watching House and Cuddy have sex. (And, like? Am I weird for this? I don't mind a sex scene, but when the whole episode is just making out I'm like… okay, let's move on.) I do like the Chase and Thirteen of it all (my nuclear take is that while I'm glad they never dated, they would have been a good match), but mostly the episode feels like it was thrown together last minute. Also, did the episode just totally forget Cuddy has a kid at home?? She just doesn't go home for two days and it's fine?

7. Alone (S4)

I understand that the point is seeing House at his worst, and I included in on the "best character/patient episodes," but… even if it's the point, man does this episode have no sparkle. House makes error after error, there's no one to stop him, hardly any interplay — it's a necessary episode to set up the hiring arc, but it's also a pretty frustrating one.

6. Twenty Vicodin (S8)

As established, I don't love "solo" episodes, I'm much more of an ensemble girlie. While it's interesting to see House with limitations and in a new setting, I think the slow start of S8 doesn't really do him a ton of favors. I don't think the episode is bad, just… forgettable. But it gets points for trying something new.

5. Pilot (S1)

I have a real weakness for a good pilot, if only because I find them really interesting to study: this is our first ever impressions of these characters and this story, so what does it tell us? What are we meant to think? I think the House pilot is pretty strong, and I'm letting my bias rank it higher… but it still has its weirdness. Chase barely exists, Cuddy is much more of a generic administrator, parts of the episode feel dumbed-down and "for the audience" in a way the show gets better at later on. And man, that weird orange filter. Still, it's a good pilot, and if not for the pilot, we wouldn't have the rest of the series!

4. Acceptance (S2)

Acceptance is a perfectly good case episode, with a good patient storyline. It also doesn't really feel like a grand season opener, you know? Cameron's subplot with Cindy is a good character study, but also one of the very few times I find her frustrating (she's being negligent and patronizing noooo Cameron stoooop). I do appreciate the show throwing in exposition to remind us who the team are, and what they decided to remind us of: Cameron is Nice and has a Dead Husband, Foreman is a Former Criminal, and Chase Went To Seminary. We never actually learn how the cast found out about that one, btw. I think about this a lot.

3. Broken (S6)

I really don't love solo episodes, but I do give this one an edge over Twenty Vicodin because I think it does things better: it's much more internal, more of a character study than "House in a Situation." It also has a strong internal arc: House assuming he knows best with Freedom Master and almost killing him is a wakeup call that lets him finally put his ego aside; the talent show is corny, but even if it didn't last, I liked this version of House, who wanted to change. As I mentioned in my season finale post, this and Both Sides Now really could have worked as the series finale, if House was a show that wanted to be optimistic and hopeful in the end.

2. Dying Changes Everything (S5)

A casefic, but one very much dealing with the repercussions of S4. We have Wilson trying to move on and run away, Thirteen being a mess all over the place with her Huntington's Diagnosis, and still the episode takes a minute to give everyone a moment to shine. Everyone is still dealing with the fallout of S4, and once again the theme is can people change? Wilson wants to. The patient doesn't want to. Thirteen wishes she could.

1. Meaning (S3)

Can people change? Even when you have changed, does it fix you? Meaning sees House at what should be his highest — his leg is fixed, he is pain free and happy — and sees him grapple with the idea that the person he wants to be still isn't who he is. He tries to play the part of a kinder, more helpful doctor, and feels nothing; he feels a twinge of pain and feels nothing but terror that everything is going to end. It sets up the Tritter arc — and the decline of House's leg — all in one episode, doing what, strangely, many House season openers don't: set up a storyline. It also features the original team pulling one of their famous exhausted all-nighters, which. I don't know. I love it when we see them and it's 3 am and they all have messy hair. Just let me have this.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON WIGOLOGY (101 AND WHAT MAKES A WIG, WIG).

First things first,

What is a wig?

A hair piece is attached to one's head. Many use it because it's basically a new head of hair. It's useful in theatre, tv, and movies because of continuity and not wanting to damage actors' hair. Black film stars have a unique relationship with it because even though it's a protective hairstyle and does what's stated above a lot of the times they get bad wigs because stylist don't have the skills to do their hair and it's used as a pin straight fall back. Recently (Ruth Carter, my beloved) strides have been made to be better and to integrate Black actors' actual hair. (Halle will be famous always)

What is a good wig?

One that you can't tell that it's a wig. Or more so it doesn't exist in an uncanny space. Basically their are different types of wigs, but lacefronts are mostly used for cinema and theatre because they have a piece of sheer lace that blends into the skin for this exact reason. Because it's extremely popular in black and queer spaces, the standards for a good wig are high.

What's a bad wig?

In contrast, a bad wig, you can tell it's a wig. You can see lace, you can see the line of the lace, you can see the actors' hair underneath, or it doesn't look like real hair within the world. The within the world difference is necessary because sometimes a wig is a part of a costume or look that's meant to communicate that it's a wig. Think drag, think colourful wigs. It's an accessory for the concept of the outfit. Wigs in movies or TV can be similar, but it's never meant to take you out of the world.

WHY HOTD S1 WIGS ARE BAD?

They take us out of the world. Characters like Rhaenys and Rhaena look like they're hiding dragon eggs in their hair.

Laena and Baela have open, synthetic curls for the most part, and they stop Baela’s loc journey half way through.

Jace has a helmet looking wig.

The others have okay hair, but styles aren't the level of the most prosperous time in the Houses Targaryen's and Velayron's Reign.

If you don't notice it's fine and go on but when you do, like me with a love of costuming and a fan of Game of Thrones before, the intricate design of Daenerys is lost in the past and given a simpler design.

Alicent has the best wig in the show but she always looks like a Queen (episode 8 was tough). The extravagance of these houses is lost in the styling. The beauty is lost in the simplicity of characters design who in the books have extravagant wealth and nobility with a facade to match.

Hotd also falls into the "Black hair, barely care" trope with black actors. The locs were one of the best choices, but no one can deny Laenor as Jace's dad with the matching helmet wig. Laena and Baela suffer from unstyled curls and Rhaena’s hair is full of secrets (and hate crimes, hbo, I'm in your walls)

SO, IS SEASON 2 BETTER?

So far, yes. We have an established hair language in the world with season 1, but season 2 seems to take strides with the wigs and costumes, especially with the black characters so hopefully we've made it through dark times.

If only Laena was around to be redeemed.

today, i wanna talk about this point that i've referenced a couple times across my yrzx fics:

For the fate of the world, Wang Ye relinquished his days of peace and tranquility. To save Zhuge Qing’s life, Wang Ye could sacrifice everything beneath the heavens. (from 岁月不待人 | the moon and the tides, you and i)

i'll start during Beijing arc, when ZCL asks why WY doesn't just give up Feng-hou Qimen to the ppl who want it.

in the manhua (ch. 185) & donghua (s3, ep. 3), WY's response is vague: "for various reasons, i can't give out [that power]."

(note that the dialogue differs slightly btwn these two adaptations, but the meaning is the same)

but in the live-action (s1, ep. 22), WY clearly explains that "it would throw the ways of this world into greater disorder. this calamitous fate must be shouldered by me alone."

these lines perfectly demonstrate one of WY's most defining traits: 心怀天下 / a heart that cradles everything beneath the heavens.

we see it first during the tournament arc, when WY admits to ZCL that he didn't need to get involved in this mess—but did so anyway because the fate of the world was implicated.

WY: Actually, whatever happens to you all has nothing to do with me. No matter how terrible the world ends up, I can still protect myself and my family and keep us unscathed. So, actually, I shouldn't have come here. [...] ZCL: What you mean is that if I continue my investigation, the future of this world may very likely develop in a bad direction. Daozhang, who this "bad future" impacts isn't limited to only me, right? The two of us are neither kin nor kith; you wouldn't have come to get caught up in these troubled waters because of me, right? WY: This, involves another concept. I call it the weight of fate. [...] And you, Zhang Chulan, you hold a high ratio of that weight. Your choice will change the fates of many, many people. (LA s1, ep. 14; see also manhua chs. 121-122 & donghua s2, ep. 12)

this is the extent of WY's selflessness. and as his conversation w ZCL continues, something else is revealed to us.

ZCL: The you who could have stayed out of this matter entirely chose instead to come here and persuade me. Did you also not choose the future that would have been best for you? (LA s1, ep. 14)

that 'something' is none other than WY's conduct: 明知山有虎，偏向虎山行 / knowing full well the mountains harbor tigers, yet insisting on traveling deep into the mountains anyway. or, in other words, the practice of forging on into promised danger.

which, coincidentally, is exactly how WY praised Zhuge Liang's character during his match against ZGQ.

可他却放弃了作为一个修者该坚守的一切。就算逆大势而行，也要投身到乱世当中，只为了去救那个明知已无可救药的天下。/ But he chose to give up everything that a cultivator should uphold and protect. Even if it meant opposing the momentum of the times, he threw himself utterly into chaos of the mortals—all to save a world he knew full well was beyond redemption. 为了那个天下情愿去和天理和大势对抗 / For that world, he was willing to hold off divine order and destiny itself. 明知不可为而为，这就是他那个级别的术士作为。/ To do something knowing full well of its impossible nature—this was the practice of a sorcerer of his caliber. (LA s1, ep. 13; see also manhua ch. 110 & donghua s2, ep. 10)

with such a heart of compassion (怜悯之心, HMH's words) and sense of responsibility, WY is unlike anyone else in his generation. instead, it can be argued that the character most similar to WY is in fact one of his seniors, lao-Tianshi.

they are, at least in the LA, the only two 麒麟 in the story after all (s1, eps. 8 & 20):

and just like lao-Tianshi, it's easy to think of WY as a saint (圣人) or a god—something "above" mortal humans. he's operating on a scale (格局) far greater than anyone else in our main cast; WY is always taking the whole world into consideration, even if that's the choice least favorable to him.

and then Beijing arc happens. and by the end of it, WY has an epiphany:

“The me who has always avoided involvement with worldly affairs has no right to speak of leaving them behind.” (manhua ch. 196; see also LA s1, ep. 23 & donghua s3, ep. 7)

he's begun to have a reckoning with his own human-ness. he's starting to realize that he's fallible, that he's ordinary and secular, that he has attachments—and, importantly, that he wants attachments. that he desires companionship (just as humans are wont to do).

and it's with that moment of enlightenment that we dive into Biyou Village arc.

because, overall, WY has not actually changed that much. he still feels responsible for the peace and safety of the world; he still wants to figure out how ZCL and FBB are related to the Jiashen Calamity. he still remembers clearly what Hong-ye said: "you are the chosen one." (LA s1, ep. 4)

and even ZGQ himself remarks (manhua ch. 228; see also donghua s4, ep. 5):

yet when ZGQ's safety is at stake, WY doesn't hesitate for even a moment:

that is not the conduct of someone who always thinks about the bigger scheme of things. that's the conduct of someone making a choice for himself, an arguably selfish choice, to save his friend and doom everyone else.

WY would sooner give up his Feng-hou Qimen and restart the Jiashen Calamity than see ZGQ in danger. that is how important ZGQ is to WY.

在王也的心中，诸葛青的命比天下苍生还重要。/ in Wang Ye's heart, Zhuge Qing's life is more important than everyone in beneath the heavens.

and that's because ZGQ is the first of his generation to approach him. to make an effort to befriend him. to look beyond the power he possesses and also see him.

(LA s1, ep. 15; see also manhua ch. 131 & donghua s2, ep. 14)

in other words, it was ZGQ who made WY's godlike love for the world human. WY is no longer an outside viewer looking down on the plane he feels beholden to; WY is a part of this secular world, and that is why he should want to protect it.

because the red dust realm is where ZGQ exists. here is where their bond exists.

tldr: Wang Ye places the world before himself, and Zhuge Qing before the world.

— all this to say, i really am excited for s2 of the live-action, even though the casting rumors have been disheartening. Biyou Village arc is a climactic chapter for YeQing, so i hope the adaptation does it justice.

I've seen speculation about how many episodes we're getting, but isn't 8 still the most likely? Rolin said at SDCC last year that if he did make IWTV two seasons, he'd have to bring in material from other books because they've already covered some bits of IWTV in the first two seasons, so that tells me that he is confident he can tell the IWTV story he wants to tell in one season (and if they leave a lot of the Marius stuff for another season, that leaves even more room). Your thought of IWTV and QOTD possibly being three seasons overall, with bits mixed and matched, makes sense too, but I think each season is likely to be 8 episodes?

I just don't want to get hopes up for 10 or 12, as much as I'd love that of course, lol. And if the filming dates through October are accurate, that doesn't seem like enough time to film 10 episodes? Not that I know a ton about how things are filmed.

I definitely think 8 is the most likely, but I actually don't think 10 is out of the realm of possibility? AMC has made a few changes to episode orders across their shows in the last two years, increasing some - Dark Winds went from 6 eps in seasons 1 and 2 to 8 for the recent s3, and The Walking Dead: Dead City similarly went from 6 in s1 to 8 in s2 too - and decreasing others - most notably The Terror, which is going from 10 episodes in s1 and s2 to 6 in s3. That'll be for a whole range of factors, from budgets to story (The Terror in particularly being an anthology series makes that more flexible, I think), but it shows that the episode orders are potentially a little more open to change than they might be with other networks or streamers?

Rolin does seem to have pretty significant creative control, and AMC seems to really want to nurture their relationship with him, so I think you like you said, a lot of it will come down to him. In that sense, while I hear what you're saying that they have already taken parts of TVL and put it into seasons 1 and 2, they've also opened up the world already in a way that gives them a lot more story, from Louis remaining a lead, to Lestat doing a tour instead of a show, to TVL being an interview instead of Lestat writing his story, to Devil's Minion, and perhaps most of all, to Armand being a POV character. The latter of which I can't imagine won't bring a lot of things to screen that we don't really get to see in the book, particularly Nicki's descent and Armand's role in his suicide.

It'll all really depend on how they're weaving these stories in and out of each other, and again, I do think adapting TVL and QOTD across three seasons would make a lot of sense, but I feel like Rolin's indicated a couple of times now that Marius and Akasha will be introduced this season, so I think they are probably planning to give them one each.

Re: the October dates, my understanding is that that's when production finishes in Toronto? I think there's been a bit of speculation there might be a little more filming afterwards in Paris, Prague and/or New Orleans still, which probably would give them enough time to do ten eps, but - - yes. Haha, I do think 8 is most likely.

Top 25 Bridgerton Sex Scenes

Many have opinions on the amount of sex (or lack of it) in the Bridgerverse. But hints of steamy scenes ahead for S4 (at least two particular ones), here’s my ranking of the love scenes in the franchise.

Please note, I am leaving out dubious consent for obvious reasons. And while the carriage scene is a popular scene, it’s more or less “second base”. With that said, here we go!

25. Colin and the sex workers It’s clearly an unpopular scene within the fandom. So let’s move on!

24. Kanthony on Kate’s desk Too brief. But also, they’re talking about extending their honeymoon before that. We were robbed of more Kanthony marital bliss!

23. Anthony and Siena in her dressing room It’s clear to the viewer that this was an escape for Anthony as he was too focused on his watch while Siena mocks high society. And then Anthony bites back about their are ladies. Yikes.

22. Saphne on Simon’s desk Ah the moment Daphne realize that Simon is “jizzing” elsewhere. Of course, that leads to her conversation with Rose and eventually… THAT SCENE.

21. Prudence and Dankworth getting reacquainted It’s funny and awkward because all Prue was thinking if her husband is going to ruin her hair.

20. Granville and Whetherby caught by Ben Too short! I wanted more!

19. Anthony “mounts” Siena The shock and awe of viewers of this scene less than five minutes into the series. Hey, at least we get the annual Anthony’s bum shot!

18. Saphne’s Wedding Night Everything was great. Daphne burns for Simon. Simon reveals himself and happy to be her blanket. And then… he pulls out. And poor Daphne doesn’t realize what he’s actually doing.

17. Benedict loves models The “worst of the hook ups”, we didn’t see much chemistry between Ben and Tessa, but damn look at that bum (and Tessa’s bod)

16. The Finches being passionate Philippa told her mother how she and her husband are passionate despite not actually consummating their marriage. But when they finally did, it was hot!

15. Benedict doesn’t fear widows After two seasons of Ben going after working class women, he hooks up with Tilley. And while the sex was vanilla (until later), their post-coital lunch on her floor was sweet.

14. One more for the road The tension between Anthony and Siena during the boxing match was hot, culminating with an under the bleachers quickie. And then after some thought, Siena dumps Anthony for good.

13. Saphne makes Augie It was a sweet scene with Simon trusting on their love to just let go. And then Augie comes along around nine months later!

12. Benedict loves a party of three Ben’s flirtation with Gen was quite hot. But between that, walking in on Granville, and being invited to join Mrs. Granville (unknowingly), hey he couldn’t deny a party of three.

11. Save a horse, ride a Colin After making up and the whole Ton knowing Penelope is Whistledown, what do she and Colin do after? Some post-ball cowgirl action!

10. Lady Danbury enjoys those “refuge” trips She: recently widowed who is finally breathing for the first time after being betrothed since she’s three. He: married to a harpy who tried to plot against the said widow by not attending her ball. Together: FIREWORKS, even though it’s just that one time

9. Benedict loves parties of three, parte dos While the editing sucks for this scene, watching Ben go all-in on Paul was hot to watch. And while I’m not a huge fan of this storyline happening during S3, it gave fans what they hoped for since S1.

8. Polin breaks the couch and Internet Call this a record! Within less than 24 hours, Colin was able to unconsciously break up Penelope’s courtship with Debling, chase down her carriage, almost got shot down only Penelope admitting she felt the same, commence operation: fingerbang inside the carriage, proposes, tell Portia off, and created the new Lord Featherington on a couch!

7. We’re Gonna Need A Montage (Montage!)! A Saphne Honeymoon Montage (Montage!) Pick your scene! The ladder. On the bed. The gazebo. On the field. Considering Simon’s pull-out methods, he’s got plenty of stamina to please his wifey!

6. Kanthony Wedded Bliss Who needs breakfast when Anthony can have Kate? And for lunch, dinner, and snacks. Poor Newton being left out though.

5. Saphne’s Stairway to Heaven Somewhere between being on the rocks and finally stopping his pull-out game, Simon and Daphne had some staircase fun.

4. It’s An Even Day Even after overhearing (and misinterpreted) George’s conversation with his mom, these two were throwing jabs. But they do love those “even” days. My favorite is the bathtub scene because while they are still at odds, it’s a tender scene between the King and Queen.

3. Is Reynolds still alive? Every scene between young Brimsley and Reynolds were hot and I’m begging the people of Shondland to give us a proper conclusion to their story because watching Brimsley dancing alone is unacceptable.

2. Kanthony breaks free at the gazebo While there’s no actual P-in-V (or was it?), the image of Anthony between Kate makes up for it. Or was it when Anthony on his knees with Kate’s thumb in her mouth? A couple of years later, this scene still lives rent free.

XO Kitty Watch Notes: S1 Ep. 6-8

Wow okay. Got way too invested and binged the whole series, but my notes were wayyyy too long so I had to split them into 2 posts. When I watched episodes 1&2 I wasn’t really planning on doing this, so I had to go back and add thoughts abt the beginning from memory, so the first five episodes are all just lumped together. But for these I labeled where each episode start so it’s more obvious what I’m talking abt lol.

Ep 6:

- Ayo wtf is this? It’s a dream right? RIGHT?? ok yes a dram lmaoooo him waking up like it’s a nightmare

- Subs say “oh my god” but it sounds like he says “oh my…Dae”?? When abt to kiss her? idk just thought that was interesting….(foreshadowing of conflict btwn then over her?? Better not be)

- These 2 (Kitty and Alex) need to get a gene test instead of assuming stuff 😭

- Yes man call her out for the meddling

- The necklace IS causing drama fu Yuri (I kinda get why she did it bc what if he’s too moved and they get back together but like come onnnnnn)

- I am enjoying their friendship. And Dae is so cute “I’ve never ‘raged’ before”

Yea I believe pip cries and is sad pretty often because of how shitty his life on earth was and in s1 e10 (Damien) pip says that he takes counseling lessons with Mr. Mackey whenever he's feeling lonely, which I would say is pretty often as he's seen sitting at lunch alone alot (except for damiens episode where he sat with Damien)

And lastly i don't anyone other than early seasons Butters, Scott malkinson (since he's apparently he's apart of butters group ig), Dougie, Damien and Mr. Mackey (big IF on that one) would comfort pip when he cries

He's probably used to the cold and those socks are probably thick enough to keep his legs warm and in summer he looks like that kid that would always wear a jacket no matter how hot it is so he probably sweats alot

10. Does pip have a healthy figure?

Looking at pip's model compared to others

He's seems to be Skinner than average this is probably because he's doesn't really get a chance to eat, growing up very poor and when he does get something to eat his food gets spoiled most of the time

Poor kid's growth would have been stunted from not getting any nutrients :/

11. Is pip a long or short sleeper?

Hmmm I would he's a pretty long sleeper (he would take a quick nap and wake up 3 hours later if he was in quiet area) but he would be a light sleeper so it wouldn't be that hard to wake him up

12. How does Damien pip show his love

I love to think that Damien has a hard time expressing himself through words so he would show his love for pip in actions rather than words buying gifts, holding hands, kisses, cuddles etc with the occasional "I love you" :)
