downloading a fic when ao3 dies (when you have the link)
looks like ao3 is down again and i was in the middle of a multi chapter fic when it died on me.
and if that happens to you, this is what you can do to download the fic:
copy paste https://download.archiveofourown.org/downloads/00000000/fic.html in your browser url
replace the pink bit with the number right after /works (that's the work id)
for instance, in https://archiveofourown.org/works/44970790/chapters/113154673 the highlighted bit (44970790) would be the number you swap for the 0s
the download link will look like https://download.archiveofourown.org/downloads/44970790/fic.html
if you want the fic to be downloaded as an epub instead, use .epub at the end of that link
it should start downloading on your device
i'm sure a bunch of people know this and use it but in case you don't, hope this helps

Introduction To Swift Seo Strategies
Launching a new website is exciting. But how do you get it to rank on Google quickly? Using swift SEO strategies is key. These methods can help your site appear on Google’s first page in just a few days.
The Race To Google’s First Page
Ranking on Google’s first page is like a race. Everyone wants to be there, but not everyone succeeds. By using effective SEO techniques, you can get ahead of your competitors.
Start by optimizing your website’s content. Use keywords that your target audience is searching for. Ensure your content is valuable and relevant. This will help Google recognize your site as an authority.
Another crucial factor is page speed. A fast-loading website improves user experience and ranks higher on Google. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to test and improve your site’s speed.
Realistic Timelines For Seo Results
SEO is not magic. It takes time to see results. For a brand-new website, you can expect to see improvements in 4 to 6 weeks. But with swift SEO strategies, you can speed up this process.
Follow a consistent SEO plan. Update your content regularly. Engage with your audience on social media. These actions signal to Google that your site is active and relevant.

Keyword Research For Immediate Impact
Launching a new website and ranking it on Google fast can seem daunting. But with the right keyword research, you can see results in just a few days. Keyword research is the cornerstone of SEO success. It identifies the terms your target audience is searching for. This section will show you how to do keyword research for immediate impact.
Identifying Low Competition Keywords
To quickly rank your website, you need to find keywords with low competition. These keywords are not heavily targeted by other websites. Here is a simple process to find them:
Use tools like Ubersuggest or Ahrefs.
Look for keywords with low difficulty scores.
Ensure the keywords have a decent search volume.
By targeting low competition keywords, you increase your chances of ranking faster. Focus on these keywords to gain quick visibility.
Leveraging Long-tail Keywords
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases. They usually have lower search volumes but higher conversion rates. Here’s how you can leverage them:
Think about specific queries your audience might have.
Use keyword research tools to find related long-tail keywords.
Incorporate these keywords naturally into your content.
Long-tail keywords are less competitive. They help you attract highly targeted traffic. This traffic is more likely to convert.
In summary, keyword research is vital for ranking a new website quickly. By identifying low competition keywords and leveraging long-tail keywords, you can achieve immediate impact. Use the right tools and strategies to find these keywords. Incorporate them into your content to see fast results.

7 Tips for Creating Enticing Content for Your Vacation Rental Website
Standing out in the digital landscape is more crucial than ever for modern vacation rental businesses. With travelers scouring the internet for their next getaway, the first impression your online presence makes can be the deciding factor between a booking and a missed opportunity. Fortunately, you also have your pick of myriad tools designed precisely to help you create visually appealing and functional websites. A dedicated vacation rental website builder, for instance, is one of the most user-friendly solutions for creating an online space that captures your properties in the best light.
Yet, a stunning website design is only part of the equation. To successfully market your business online, you’ll also need to create engaging content. The vacation rental industry primarily capitalizes on personal experiences and dream vacations, which is why it’s this content that will ultimately transform a casual browser into a committed guest. By filling your website with compelling narratives, breathtaking images, and invaluable insights about the local area, you create a magnetic draw that's hard to resist.
Let’s explore some top tips for enriching your vacation rental website with content that both informs and captivates potential visitors:
#1 Upload High-Quality Photos
A well-taken photograph can capture the golden glow of a sunset as it bathes your rental's balcony, or the inviting warmth of a living room lit by a crackling fireplace. Such images do much more than simply fill up space on your website; they’re an opportunity to tell a compelling story about each of your properties. Good photos will showcase your properties’ best features and give your guests an idea of the memorable experiences they can have should they choose to book with you. If possible, put up high-resolution, professionally taken photographs, as these will create a visual feast that users will find irresistible.
#2 Offer Virtual Tours
Now that the digital age has made it possible to bridge distances instantly through technology, offering virtual tours of your properties is akin to opening your doors to the world. This immersive experience allows potential guests to walk through your property and explore every nook and cranny at their leisure, all from the comfort of their home. It's a powerful tool that showcases your property in comprehensive detail and demonstrates transparency, which can build trust with guests. Video tours send the message that you’re confident in what you offer, and they invite guests to envision their stay with a clarity that static images alone cannot achieve.
#3 Craft Engaging Descriptions
The best property descriptions strike a deft balance between informative detail and captivating storytelling. Don’t stop at just listing amenities; try to weave a narrative that transports readers to a different place. Describe the serene tranquility of your garden, the eclectic charm of the neighborhood, or the exhilarating adventures that await at nearby attractions. Use vivid language to paint a picture that appeals to the senses and makes the reader feel as if they're already there. This narrative approach turns the mundane into the magical and entices potential guests to make your space a part of their journey.
#4 Share Local Insights
Transform your vacation rental into a gateway for exploration and discovery. Offer guests a curated selection of local gems—be it that cozy cafe with the best morning brew or the hidden trail that leads to breathtaking views—to enhance the value of their stay. This insider information positions your rental as the heart of their adventure and fosters a deeper connection with the area. It's an invitation to experience the locale not as a tourist, but with the insight of a seasoned local.
#5 Include Guest Reviews and Testimonials
Sometimes the voices of past guests are just what you need to prop up your crafted descriptions and stunning photographs. Featuring guest reviews and testimonials prominently on your website offers a glimpse into the real experiences and feelings of those who have stayed before. This social proof acts as a powerful endorsement and can go a long way toward building trust and credibility with new guests. It reassures them that your promises of comfort, beauty, and adventure are not just marketing speak, but realities that others can vouch for.
#6 Keep All Information Up to Date
Accurate details form the backbone of trust between you and those who stay at your properties. Ensure that all information on your website, from the availability calendar to pricing details and contact information, is current and accurate. This eliminates confusion and fosters a seamless booking process. In essence, you want to set expectations right and prevent any form of disappointment or frustration that could arise from discrepancies.
#7 Highlight Special Offers and Promotions
Special offers and promotions are appealing for two reasons: they create a sense of urgency and provide a tangible benefit that can tip the scales in favor of booking. Whether it's a discount for early bookings, a special rate for longer stays, or a package deal that includes local attractions, these incentives can both make potential guests feel valued and give them a reason to act quickly. Highlighting these promotions on your website captures attention right off the bat, and it also showcases your commitment to providing exceptional value. In a market where guests have no shortage of choices, such offers can be the deciding factor that draws them to your properties over others.
The content of your vacation rental website welcomes potential visitors to your properties and invites them to imagine a world of new experiences. Remember, an engaging, well-maintained website is more than a booking engine; it's the first chapter in the stories that travelers will tell about their journeys. Crafting content that resonates with visitors not only elevates your listings but also enriches the journey of everyone who comes across them.

Disclaimer: none of these answers are official, and may not work for your particular use case. If there is a specific feature that an unofficial app had that you don't know how to replicate on the AO3, let me know in the notes and we might can crowdsource a solution.
A lot of people used the Archive Reader app to access stories on Archive of Our Own, and have been upset that the app is now charging to read longer than an hour a day. AO3 (and its parent organization, the OTW) has made it extremely clear in recent days that this app is unofficial and that there *is* no official app. They encourage people to use the website.
However, there are MANY reasons you might want an app, and in a bunch of those cases, there are ways to do those things without having to provide your login information to a random person running an app. Here is a round-up of solutions to the most common reasons I've seen people give for wanting an app instead of the plain AO3 website.
These solutions are based on the following assumptions:
You know what Archive of Our Own is
You often or primarily access it through a mobile device running iOS or Android
You understand what a browser is
You understand what a browser bookmark is
You understand what a site skin is
Edits:
Edited to clarify that you must be logged in to use custom site skins
Edited to add more tips and tricks from the reblogs
Edited to add new entry about notifications/emails
Edited to add new entry about reading statistics and the tracking thereof
I need a widget on my phone's homescreen, not just a browser bookmark.
You can do this with any website, not just AO3! Instructions here: https://www.howtogeek.com/196087/how-to-add-websites-to-the-home-screen-on-any-smartphone-or-tablet/
I need Dark Mode.
AO3 has a default site skin for Dark Mode, it's just called Reversi. Find it here, or at the bottom of any page on the website. https://archiveofourown.org/skins/929/
If you'd like Dark Mode on your whole browser (and you're on Android), sorrelchestnut has advice here: https://www.tumblr.com/sorrelchestnut/737869282153775104/if-you-want-dark-mode-and-dont-want-to-mess
I need to be able to read stories when I don't have internet.
Every work on the AO3 has a download button, so you can click on that and download the story for offline reading in the ereader app of your choice. More info on how to do that is in the AO3 FAQs: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/downloading-fanworks?language_id=en#accesslater
I need to be able to change the text size of the website itself.
If you have an AO3 account (and you should!!) you can do this with a personalized site skin! There is a simple tutorial here: https://www.tumblr.com/ao3skin/667284237718798336/i-have-a-request-if-you-dont-mind-could-you
I need to be able to change the text size in downloaded stories.
My personal recommendation: Don't download in PDF format. All the other formats you can download in can scale the text size up and down, assuming you open the work in the correct app. For me, I download works in EPUB format and read them on the built-in Books app on my iPhone. I hear good things about Moon Reader on Android as well.
I need to be able to replace Y/N in fics with an actual name.
ElectricAlice has a bookmarklet for that here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/34796935
I need to be able to save specific tags and not have to search them up every time.
If you have an AO3 account (which you definitely should) then you can favorite up to 20 tags which will appear on the landing page. The AO3 FAQ explains how that works: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/tags?language_id=en#favtag
I need to be able to save specific filters and be able to apply them to any tag.
Reisling's beautiful bookmarklet has you covered: https://archiveofourown.org/works/33825019
I need to be able to permanently hide certain tags.
The best option is adding this to your site skin. (Must be logged in.) Instructions here: https://www.tumblr.com/ao3css/719667033634160640/how-to-permanently-filter-out-certain-tags-on-ao3
I also hear things about the AO3 Enhancements extension (just for Android/desktop, sorry iOS folks): https://www.tumblr.com/emotionalsupportrats/686787582579851265/browser-extension-everyone-on-ao3-should-know
I need it to save my place on the page and not reload.
This is really mostly a browser error--Firefox on iOS does this to me A LOT. Your best bet is to download the work and read it in an ereader app. A lot of people also will make an ao3 bookmark and write in the notes section which part they were at, but that assumes you aren't falling asleep while reading. (Which is the main reason I have this issue, lol.) For more info on bookmarks, see the FAQ: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/bookmarks?language_id=en#whatisbookmark
I need it to keep track of which stories I've already read/opened/kudos'd.
If you have an account (which you should) then the "My History" page keeps track of every fic you've ever clicked on. No, it isn't searchable or sortable, but it does exist. For fics you've kudos'd, I have yet to find a solution for iOS. For desktop or Android, you can use this excellent userscript: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/5835-ao3-kudosed-and-seen-history
@the-sleepy-archivist and @inkandarsenic have a solution for iOS here to use userscripts: https://www.tumblr.com/the-sleepy-archivist/737895174683885568/this-is-a-great-guide-one-thing-i-can-help-with and https://www.tumblr.com/inkandarsenic/737827438571192320/the-user-scripts-will-also-work-on-ios-there-are
I need an app because the website's search is terrible.
(I genuinely don't understand this one but I have seen it multiple times so on the list it goes!!) The search bar at the top of the screen is a keyword search. If you'd rather search within a specific field (like title or tag) then you'll want to click on the word "search" at the top of the screen and select Work Search or Tag Search. To search users, use People Search. To search Bookmarks, use Bookmark Search. (If this is you, please tell me what the heck you mean by "search is bad" and how an app helped with this.)
I need to be able to sort stories by date posted/number of bookmarks/alphabetical/etc.
You can do this using the filters sidebar. Pick a tag you want to filter on (like a fandom, character, or relationship) and then click on the "Filters" button. The sidebar will pop out and you can sort and filter on a boggling array of specifics. A good filtering guide: https://www.tumblr.com/saurons-pr-department/718665516093472768/if-there-is-something-you-dont-want-to-see-in
I need to be able to mark stories to read later.
AO3 has this feature built in! If you have an account (which you should) there is a "Mark for Later" option on every work.
Edit: Thispersonishuman reminded me that History and Mark For Later can be disabled, so if you're not seeing the Mark for Later option, check your settings.
I need to be able to listen to stories using text-to-speech.
Microsoft Edge web browser has a built in text to speech function. Supposedly it works on both iOS and Android, but I have not personally tested that. iOS also has a native accessibility feature in settings for text to speech that will work on the Books app, so I assume Android has a similar functionality. A bunch of people in the reblogs have more in-depth Android recommendations here: https://www.tumblr.com/protect-namine/737957194510794752/seconding-voice-aloud-on-android-for-tts-my, https://www.tumblr.com/smallercommand/737884523093704704/i-use-voice-for-tts-on-android-its-got-some, and https://www.tumblr.com/doitninetimes/737869463749263360/for-text-to-speech-on-android-you-can-also-check
I need to have in-app notifications for updates/I can't ever find story updates in among the rest of my emails/checking my email stresses me out.
Set up a separate email address using a free service like gmail, and use that email address JUST for AO3. Then the only emails in that inbox will be your story updates. I use Apple's Mail application for all my inboxes, but it's very easy to use the Gmail app instead, and you could log in to JUST the ao3 email and set it to notify for every email.
(Also as a general PSA: don't use your work, school, or military email as your AO3 email. Just don't.)
I want statistics like how many hours I spent reading, how many words I read, what my most read tags were, stuff like that.
So we've finally hit something that isn't easy and that requires a hell of a lot of manual work. Short version: AO3 does not track this data because they don't want to. (Mostly due to privacy concerns.) The lack of this tracking is a feature, not a bug. You can crunch these numbers yourself, but it will take a hell of a lot more effort, and it's something I personally found is not worth the effort the couple of times I have tried to crunch those numbers. If you are willing to download your history to an actual computer (not a tablet or chromebook) using Calibre, you can get a rough idea of your most popular tags via their tag browser, but it won't play nice with typos synned to a Common Tag (Canonical Tag/filterable tag) like ao3 does. (If anyone has used an app that gave you stats on this, please let me know in reblogs/replies/via ask how that worked because I am very curious.)
I need an app because <other reason>.
The AO3 Unofficial Browser Tools FAQ might cover your use case: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/unofficial-browser-tools?language_id=en If not, give a shout and we'll see what other tumblr users suggest!

Introduction To HTML
[Note: You need a text editor to do this. You can use Notepad or Text Edit. But it's so much better to download VS Code / Visual Studio Code. Save it with an extension of .html]
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
It is used to create webpages/websites.
It has a bunch of tags within angular brackets <....>
There are opening and closing tags for every element.
Opening tags look like this <......>
Closing tags look like this
The HTML code is within HTML tags. ( // code)
Here's the basic HTML code:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title> My First Webpage </title> </head> <body> <h1> Hello World </h1> <p> Sometimes even I have no idea <br> what in the world I am doing </p> </body> </html>
Line By Line Explanation :
<!DOCTYPE html> : Tells the browser it's an HTML document.
<html> </html> : All code resides inside these brackets.
<head> </head> : The tags within these don't appear on the webpage. It provides the information about the webpage.
<title> </title> : The title of webpage (It's not seen on the webpage. It will be seen on the address bar)
<body> </body> : Everything that appears on the webpage lies within these tags.
<h1> </h1> : It's basically a heading tag. It's the biggest heading.
Heading Tags are from <h1> to <h6>. H1 are the biggest. H6 are the smallest.
<p> </p> : This is the paragraph tag and everything that you want to write goes between this.
<br> : This is used for line breaks. There is no closing tag for this.
-------
Now, we'll cover some <Meta> tags.
Meta tags = Notes to the browser and search engines.
They don’t appear on the page.
They reside within the head tag
<head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> <meta name="description" content="Website Description"> <meta name="Author" content="Your Name"> <meta name="keywords" content="Websites Keywords"> </head>
Line By Line Explanation:
<meta charset="UTF-8"> : Makes sure all letters, symbols, and emojis show correctly.
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> : Makes your site look good on phones and tablets.
<meta name="description" content="Website Description"> : Describes your page to Google and helps people find it.
<meta name="author" content="Your Name"> : Says who created the page.
<meta name="keywords" content="Website's Keywords"> : Adds a few words to help search engines understand your topic.
_____
This is my first post in this topic. I'll be focusing on the practical side more than the actual theory, really. You will just have some short bullet points for most of these posts. The first 10 posts would be fully HTML. I'll continue with CSS later. And by 20th post, we'll build the first website. So, I hope it will be helpful :)
If I keep a coding post spree for like 2 weeks, would anyone be interested? o-o

opening lines (for novels, fics, etc.)
The pain in their chest was particularly unbearable that night.
The officer knew it had to be a proxy murder, and just needed the evidence to prove it.
We've waited five years to meet, and finally, that magical time has arrived.
What made you come to hate me when I did all that I could for you?
He bolted down the street, darting past everyone at a pace that only hares could match.
The voice on the other end of the line was only a soulless song that, unfortunately, couldn't distract Muse from the reality at hand.
Even with the blood washed away, I can still see the stains of murder on my palms.
I'm the bird who fell from the nest the first time she tried to fly.
"The way I love you makes me act mad, sometimes." They swore.
"The afternoon that she died, where did you say you were again?" The interrogator asked, taking a sip of their coffee.

Self vs. Social Personas as They Relate to Marketing
Check out the new blog post! #marketing #socialmedia #personas
One of the tricky things about marketing is the growth and change of it all. You simply never know when something is a trend, when it’s a permanent shift, or when you need to change strategies. The use of personas is one such area. The Technical of Personas Personas refer to two different things, sometimes more. The first is a profile of a typical customer. The second is a business’s persona to…

Book Publishing Resources
Well, since a few people said they were interested and/or that posting about it on here occasionally was a decent idea, here we go!
I'm MC Calvi, a freelance editor specializing in self-help, psychology, spirituality, paganism, workbooks, and LGBTQ books.
You can find out more about me at my website, where I also offer free twenty-minute book/publishing consultations, in addition to regular editing services.
I am also now offering some pay-what-you-can resources on my website and on Gumroad. I'm committed to offering pay-what-you-can resources because the odds are already so stacked against marginalized authors, and publishing shouldn't be pay to win.
I have two new booklets I'm actually super happy with! They both draw on my eight years of experience in the publishing industry to give authors a leg up.
And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming as I hit "publish" on another good news post!
#Also if you're not interested but still want to help/support me#it would actually be super helpful if you reblogged this#because having my website link in more places will help boost my ranking in search engines#I promise not to post about this often#like we're talking less than once a month#I'm here to spread good news! not to spam my stuff!#and everything I do post will be tagged with#my editing#in case you want to filter#book editing#publishing#publishing tips#book publishing#indie author#self publishing#not news

It’s officially mermay now so here’s a first design for my second merman from my very self-indulgent merfolk story that is currently called Merfolk Records and that only barely exists outside my brain for now, and his name is (possibly) Asha!
#merfolk records#merfolk#mermay 2025#mermay#my art#art#mio’s original#mio’s asha#my ocs#merman#fun fact i learned a lot about southern resident orcas did you know their dorsal fin’s tip is more rounded than that of transient orcas#and they mostly almost exclusively eat fish (mainly salmons!) instead of seals like transient orcas#also male orcas have a more straight dorsal fin and females have theirs more curved to the back#i saw the name Sasha while looking at boy names while taking away consonants in my brain and thought#Asha could be fun but can it be a man’s name and then i saw 1% of recorded Asha’s on the website were boys and that was good enough for me!#the sh sound is more like a whistle than a sh in my mind cause thats fun
