When I finished the foxhole court I made a lift of things I think would happen in the series, now that I finished raven king I’m revisiting my predictions and adding some more [spoilers]

• they have to have some sort of success as a team, like they low key have to win. I was low key getting intense haikyuu vibes when reading icl. We are getting there

• someone is getting kidnapped…. Idk who (Neil and/or kevin kidnapped and taken to ravens/moriyamas????) it feels great to be mostly correct😋 (it was Neil he was coercively kidnapped(?))

•at some point Neil won’t know the security code cuz he’s always saying ‘punched in this weeks/months security code’ it’ll get changed and he won’t be able to get in I still believe this will happen at some point

• some guy called Jean will join the team (I got this via fandom osmosis) but at some point a raven will join the foxes, idk who— maybe Jean??? Okay now that I’ve met Jean and confirmed that he has an air of babygirl around him I just know he kinda has to join the team, or at least help the foxes out

I know we've all been discussing about when and where JereJean get together in terms of captain-player dynamic

But tbh if I were Jeremy and about to start my last year (5th year for players, so he's about to be 23 iirc) I just could NOT imagine dating a 19yo. No matter how attractive, if it ends in TEEN for me that's a kid. Even 20 would be pushing it, even if they were in my same year

I'm 22 now and I see 18/19yos as kids lol

As a survivor of CSA, the way most of this fandom discusses a teenager makes my skin crawl 🙃 he's not a "hot piece of meat" and yes, a 3-4 years age gap does matter, when he's a teen, has been abused his whole life, has a warped view of what humans are like

I know Nora sees no issues with age gaps (Andrew was a minor, 17 hooking up with 22/23yo Roland according to Nora's tweet, and no one in the books ever comments on it), but it's just weird to me

Like 3 years ago Jean was 16 and joined the Ravens to be raped, tortured, brutalized, and on top of that he was also completely isolated from "normal" society throughout his childhood

His situation is even worse than Neil's, because Neil at least had someone fighting with him and for him before she was killed

Hell even Andrew had a more normal (albeit tragic) upbringing. Foster homes and abuse but he still knows how to function in society when he has to (he just refuses to most of the time)

Meanwhile Jean is extremely codependent and needs a designated partner to function

There's a difference between growing up abused (Neil, Andrew) and growing up in a CULT and abused (Jean, Kevin to an extent, although he was not property and incredibly privileged compared to Jean)

I'm not saying Jean is defenseless. He's a fighter. He WILL stand up for himself, I'm 100% sure of it. And won't just let others fight his fights.

But he also grew up completely removed from normal human interactions and still has to learn how to be his own person rather than just an "ex Raven" (and he still can't fully accept that)

(Kevin too; he became an alcoholic to cope)

His past of sexual abuse + young age make his situation even more delicate when it comes to romantic and/or sexual relationships

I wish the fandom would see that. This goes beyond the captain-player dynamic issue.

I would love nothing more but for Jeremy to remember that throughout the series (as he's already realized it) and put his attraction aside

I fully support JereJean in the future, when they've both graduated and Jean has gone pro (idk what Jeremy will do, I can't remember if Nora ever said). When Jean can breathe a little easier knowing that he's made it and the Moriyamas are getting his money. When he's learned to live and work alone. When he's learned that his friends love him unconditionally

But right now? He needs a break. Just let the guy live 😩

And that's what bothers me the most: Jean still needs to LEARN HOW TO LIVE. He's a complicated, traumatized, fierce character fighting tooth and nail to learn how to live a normal life, how to be a person rather than property, an asset, a Raven

But most of the fandom just sees him as part of a ship.

That's where all the OOC fanfiction comes from, people either brushing his trauma aside or hyper focusing on just one aspect of it, all in service of their ship (same as with Andreil)

Sometimes the stuff I see is sooo OOC the only thing it has in common with aftg is the character names

The age gaps in this series bother me quite a bit. The Andrew / Roland thing was seriously messed up even if Andrew was the one calling the shots. Kevin and Thea is another one. Renee and Jean is even worse now that we know his age (24 vs 19?!?!?!??? What on earth????). Jeremy is a little closer in age, but it is still the better part of three years ahead.

Now, I do want to say when I was in college I did date someone two years older, but he was in my grade. With Jeremy I understand Jean is technically only a grade below, and that he’s 2.75 years younger, but it does make a difference. Jeremy honestly has a better grip on Jean’s trauma and the situation than this fandom tbh.

I was honestly very surprised when Nora told us Jean was 19 ESPECIALLY because Jeremy has to be at least 22. And idk if ppl forget that he’s older on top of the dynamic they have going but adding being older to his captaincy AND to the fact that he’s been in normal society where Jean has not… he does have power where Jean doesn’t.

And I’m not saying Jean can’t be in a relationship, I think jean can function way better than most people give him credit for or he literally would not be able to go day to day, but I do think it’s important for him to grow a bit before he gets into it with Jeremy. (I am not saying it has to be post college per se, just that the guy needs to heal a bit first). A lot of this fandom puts TOO much pressure on Jeremy to show him how to function, and while I think Jeremy can help I definitely do not think he should be labeled with this caretaker/savior thing the fandom has going on.

ESPECIALLY with sex. And now I’m not an NSFW blog but I need to address it. I’ve seen takes where Jean cannot even talk about sex but he and Jeremy are deep into a sexual relationship. If Jean cannot talk about sex he should not be having it. That’s like sex 101. It also really weirds me out when they make Jeremy show him the ropes of sex or call the shots or have Jean ask him to call the shots, but that’s just my personal opinion. This man had 0 autonomy in that nest. I do not think he should or would be handing that autonomy to Jeremy the minute he gets some. (Also he’s currently NINETEEN. Why is Jeremy DOMMING HIM half the time??????????)

I also agree about the OOC fics. There are a select few that do not (and I’ve said this so many times so I’m sorry if you’re sick of me) turn Jean into a submissive little woman (woman as in society’s idea of what a woman should be, not an actual woman) and Jeremy into this big bad alpha male type that needs to direct Jean’s every move.

Not only are those takes OOC, but it’s super weird.

Dan and Matt: have a personal twitter account and regularly engages with people on there

Allison: has a twitter account where she acts a like an ice princess. Has a photogenic model-esque instagram account of places she goes and of herself looking hot, plus aestheic photos of her and her friends. Shes got enough followers to be an influencer but doesnt give enough of a shit to be an influencer, shes too busy. And too rich. Has a private instagram account filled with awkward/embarrassing candid shots of the foxes.

Renee: has a twitter account but only for news/checking on the PSU account. DOES have a tumblr account but no one knows she runs it. She reblogs bible verses and poetry and photographs, amongst shit posts

Nicky: he has a personal twitter, instagram and tumblr account. He interacts with fans on his personal twitter. Has a large following because he's got a good personality He and renee get into friendly arguments on tumblr and people ship them. Both members laugh and Nicky replies with a gay meme every time. He has a huge following there, and is only out as gay on tumblr.

He's also a marketing major, and like Allison he has a professional twitter and Instagram as well. His humor still makes it through but it's more sly. Ppl follow it because they get more fox tea/photos than his priv

Kevin: has a twitter and instagram. Strictly professional bc poor boy has never been able to unlearn the PR lessons. He rarely interacts with fans, and is illusive about the day to day of the foxes and his inner thoughts to the point of being nominated the fox cryptid. Despite this, his instagram is filled with aesthetic photographs of the various places he visits (sometimes he's even in it, PR friendly smile firmly in place). His captions include a historical tidbit about the place.

Aaron: he has a private twitter account only, and it's entirely anonymous. Maybe a tumblr account. He's just a normal dude on it, and interacts with Kaitlyn and his med school friends. No one knows who runs his account and he has a small following. He likes the privacy. He has a professional account to be tagged in shit but he does Not use it

Andrew: Kevin forced him to make a twitter account. He has never opened it. It's loaded on Kevin's phone, who makes the occasional necessary PR statement.

Neil: "what's social media?" (He knows what it is. But he's never been able to shake his weariness and distrust of it from his time on the run - too much of a liability. Also his name got dragged through the mud when his parentage came out and that soured him from EVER wanting to touch socmed again. His professional account was deleted after people kept @'ing him with insults and death threats)

Jean: never got PR training and socialing with his team mates is exhausting enough. Doesn't have social media and swears he never will. Gets his news and memes from Cat and Laila (he doesn't laugh at them but inwardly finds them amusing)

Jeremy: has a twitter account which Is a tasteful mix between professional and humorous. Has some personal insights but he'd skilled at sharing a lot without telling anything about himself. People don't notice it like they do kevin. Interacts with fans, but very little info about him and his friends' personal lives make it onto social media. He has a instagram too, but it's got 61 posts and it's mostly a Trojan's fan account, where he hypes up new members of his team and their victories.

Cat and laila: cat and laila are the most normal. They have a twitter account each, which they use like Dan and Matt. They share an aesthetic instagram account but also have their own private accounts where they post silly pictures of themselves and friends, or simp for each other. They have a tumblr account as well. They're married on there

This isn't about Hoyo I just needed to vomit some AFTG thoughts into a public space and I just finished ToS and I'm rabid. I have no idea how many of y'all even read this series but spoilers. And trigger warnings. Anyways.

Okay what the fuck ever the thing about ToS isn't just about of the extra trigger warnings and things that made me wanna throw up and cry at the same time. It's about how horribly, tragically awful it is that Jean is full of so much love. He always has been. It's not just haha what a pansexual no. Jean craves affection so fucking much. He's weak to pretty people and devastated by kind people. He clung to Kevin. He clung to Renee. He even clung to Thea, who affectionately called him Paris as he trailed her like a little duckling. He spits and rages and claws at them all, calling them every rabid name in the dictionary and beyond. He has a laundry list of insults for Neil, who freed him, one of the only people he truly trusts. It's just that he never expects it back. He never wants it back because it hurts so much worse when it's gone. People hurt him when it's gone. He says "I can take it" and "this is normal" because he would burn if he couldn't.

This is why he rejects the Trojans. Every "don't you see" and "why do you look away" is well-meaning but twice as hurtful because accepting it would mean Jean didn't hurt because he deserved it. Without that crutch it means he suffered for nothing. He hurt for nothing. Accepting it would mean that Jean would have to open up and fully comprehend the absolute horrors that were done not just to his life but to his personhood. To him. He was a child and a victim and he deserved to be saved and he wasn't. Not until it was too late. All of those years after being sold by his parents, yearning, aching to be loved by somebody and used as a toy and a scapegoat in return by anyone who touched him. Love is painful. Trust is painful. And Jean will love and love and love until it kills him and he knows it.

But this is why Kevin sent him to the Trojans. They may not understand survival and suffering the way the Foxes do, but they're genuine. They may be misguided with some of their efforts and need to take time learning how Jean works but they try and try and keep trying. They understand their own faults and healthy coping mechanisms and how to treat your worst enemies with respect. Hell, nearly the entirety of Jeremy's inner circle are in queer relationships with each other except for himself because he's too busy thinking about other people to work on that. This is what Jean needs to learn, that people can give without asking for anything in return. That people can be selfless and care for one another without ulterior motives. That love can be healthy and beautiful and not cruel.

And listen. I've been rooting for Jerejean for eight goddamn years. You have no idea how hard I fell when I realized that the ship that embodies the entire idea of healing, self-growth, and respect had been actualized and it's everything I ever wanted and more. The fact that Jeremy helps Jean buy his very first possession. The fact that he's so protective of Jean and thinks he's more important than exy, that Jean will be his success story. When he holds his hands and begs him to open up and backs off when Jean needs space, but never leaves and never gives up. How he spends so much time organizing people and schedules and events just so Jean can feel safe walking around campus. He never pushes too hard, but he never stops pushing. He's so patient. He wants Jean. He wants him so bad, but more than that, he wants Jean to love himself above all else. He's there when Jean has a panic attack at the pool, and sticks around as close as he can after Jean gets attacked. He stays up by the door all night when Jean goes out with Neil to an unknown location. All of this on top of revitalizing the Trojans, dealing with his shit family and the shittier rumors, having to train Jean out of killing his team and teaching his team to trust Jean in return.

Even after all of that his number one priority is always Jean, his head is filled with Jean, making the world comfortable and safe for Jean. It's making sure all of his friends know Jean. Never letting Jean be alone. Getting another twin bed so he can room with him. Always correcting himself, slowing down and speeding up so he can match Jean's pace. Fucking Barkbark. And yes, Renee could have done this too. She was the right person, and yes, the wrong time. But Jeremy found Jean at the right time, a time where he would dedicate everything to Jean. And if Jean one day turns around and wants to give that back, he'll be there, but he'll be just as happy knowing Jean is going to be okay.

ToS is a story about healing. It's about growth and battling the consequences of a life you did not choose. It's about unfairness. It's about what happens after a tragedy, and how to cope with yourself as much as you cope with the outside world. It's about becoming. It's about demons. It's about loyalty. It's about love. It's not about romance. Not yet. But it's about a romance that couldn't exist without it. It's setting up a story about someone who learns to accept that, tragically, he deserves to be treated like a human being. With love. And that he can still have it. That it's right there, waiting for him, when he's ready. He just has to reach out and take it.

An incomplete list of things I think will happen in tsc3:

- Foxes v Trojans will be Kevin’s perfect game. It’s the culmination of everything he’s ever wanted out of exy. Even if it’s not for the championship title or even a Fox win (which tbh I don’t think it will be bc I don’t foresee the Foxes winning the whole thing) it will be perfect for him. I would also accept a Fox v Trojans scrimmage

- Jeremy finally gets out of his mother’s house. I don’t think he’d 100% cut her off, maybe she has a come-to-Jesus moment and realizes how terrible she’s been to him for years (probably not), but he deserves to get tf out of there regardless

- Jean is going to beat the shit out of Faser if he gets anywhere NEAR him. The second that mf steps on private property with no cameras he’s a GONER.

- I don’t think the Moriyama’s are going to be dismantled/brought to justice. I’ve seen some people say they think they will but law enforcement in aftg has always been depicted as corrupt/horrible at their jobs and I don’t think it’s realistic that the system will ever pull itself together enough to take down the empire the Moriyama’s have built. Maybe it’ll work out where they need to cut all ties with exy as a whole and the perfect court will be able to get out of their deal, but there’s no way the entire organisation will be taken down

- Joshua depiction perhaps??? Figuring out what he texted Jeremy perhaps??? Idk there must be something there

- Speaking of the Knox/Wilshire siblings I think Annalise will be the first (or maybe only) one to actually show up to a Trojan’s game and try to start rebuilding her relationship with Jeremy. They were close with each other before and I think she’d be the most willing to mend their relationship out of any of them

- Elodie is alive. I don’t think she’s the Marseille French tutor, I can kind of see her being one of the Fox’s freshman (they passed Jean off as a freshman in college when he was around her age), but I do think she’s alive. Maybe the French tutor is housing her and trying to keep her from their parent’s old contacts coming for her??? Idk

- Jean is going to formally meet Mathilda and Jeremy’s stepdad (whose name I don’t care enough to remember right now) and it’s not going to go well

- I really hope this doesn’t happen but I think the Wilshire’s mistreatment of Jeremy is going to push William far enough that he quits. He treats Jeremy like a son and cares about him so much and I can’t imagine it’s easy for him to sit there and watch him be so miserable all the time, and I think it would be the wake-up call Mathilda needs to realize how terrible of a parent she’s been

- Jeremy’s bio dad shows up and is not as big of an asshole this time??? Perhaps??? Idk I hope for Jeremy’s sake that at least one of his parents isn’t shitty all the time

At least, that’s what Andrew thinks until a familiar face shows up. Another Raven!Neil AU. Or, the one where the boys don’t meet until the Pros. My bookmark: Amazing Raven!Neil AU that takes a bit of a different approach to the trope, where Neil and Andrew don’t get to know each other until after Neil’s left the Nest – but he’s still far from free. Brutal, gut-wrenching, brilliant. Time for Kevin to get out, to get him help. Neil could give them that. It has been seven years since the boy named Nathaniel came to live at the nest. The men who call themselves his masters like to think themselves monsters-but they are wrong. Neil can survive this, even when he feels like he can’t. This fic CANNOT be read as a standalone and should be read after NYTB. At minimum, you should be past chapter 28 before reading this. This story takes place during the time in which Jean and Neil are still in the nest. My bookmark: NYTB backstory – Neil’s POV of the night Kevin left the Nest. By a Thousand Cuts, by Coffeexandxangst Rating: Explicit Ship: Jeremy/Jean/Renee Word count: 9k Status: complete Summary: Renee is here for Jean. Jeremy is an unfortunate bi-product. This story takes place shortly after Jeremy and Jean are signed by the Seattle Serpents, during Neil’s final year in the nest. It can be read as a stand alone or as a companion to NYTB! My bookmark: Renee and Jeremy are both with Jean, but they’re not with each other – yet. They have some things to work out first (and work them out they do).

Hope Was a Dangerous, Disquieting Thing, by BisexualChaosDemon Rating: Mature Ship: Andrew/Neil Word count: 440k Status: complete Summary: When Neil was fourteen, his father caught up to them in Seattle and he got separated from Mary. Unfortunately, neither of them escaped unscathed, but they did escape despite all the odds. They manage to reunite at one of their emergency rendezvous and take off running. That's where their luck ran out though because they only made it to California before Mary's injuries finally bested her. In the end, his mother couldn't go on but she made Neil promise to keep running because one of them had to make it. With no other choice, Neil burned her body, buried her ashes on the beach, and did what he had promised. Then, impossibly, things went from bad to worse — After a month of just sort of drifting in his grief, Neil found out he was pregnant. My bookmark: Canonverse with some major twists – Neil is trans, Mary dies earlier, and Neil has an adorable toddler daughter named Anastasia. I love this kid fic, AFTG-style – I would die for Ana, and it’s so nice to find a young child character who’s actually written realistically, rather than as either a child-shaped prop or a miniature adult. I love seeing Neil, Andrew and all of the Foxes with her, and seeing what changes in the story with the presence of Neil’s “sister.” It’s very much a canon retelling, so expect canon-typical violence and angst, with added TWs as well as moments of cuteness and family feels.

Settle Our Bones (series), by batmoniker, justbeyondstars, motleyfam Rating: Teen Ship: None Word count: 145k Status: WIP Summary: A hurt/comfort focused series where Jason never dies, but the Waynes’ weird neighbor kid gets strung along for the ride all the same. My bookmark: ‘Tim-joins-the-Batfam-early/Jason-never-dies’ essential reading. Tim keeps getting into Situations™, and the Waynes are always there for him. Lots of great h/c & found fam feels.

*fav* Before I met you / I didn't have anything to think about., by giganoodle Rating: Explicit Ship: Damian/Tim Word count: 112k Status: WIP Summary: Then gifts start arriving at his apartment, on the first of every month, like clockwork, like an apology. There is never any note, but the wrapping paper is Japanese, thick and expensive, and always blue-black. He could pretend they were from anyone; from Alfred, or from Bruce, as unlikely as that would be. The lack of a signature made it easy to compartmentalise again. Perhaps that was the point. It was usually food, or astronomically expensive, understated clothing that Tim would never buy for himself. Once, when his prescription ran out, it was melatonin; of course that little- whoever it was, kept tabs on that. *** A young Damian attempts to initiate a relationship with a horrified Tim. Damian swears that he won't be refused, and begins a five year, long-distance campaign of seduction via gift giving, poetry and abortive attempts to get Tim to just sleep for once. My bookmark: THE DamiTim fic ever <3 Gorgeously written, featuring an incredibly intense and complex relationship & amazing characterization of both Tim and Damian.

evergreen ever sun ever moon, by Sister Rating: Explicit Ship: Jason/Tim Word count: 38k Status: complete Summary: He peels the domino off of Tim’s face. The blown blood vessels are back in the whites of Tim’s eyes, and the dark circles are dire again, blue-purple and sunk in deep. “You wanna tell me how much sleep you didn’t get today?” Jason says. ++ Tim’s insomnia is out of control. Jason helps. My bookmark: Another incredible fic from my favorite JayTim author, plotty and well written and overall awesome. Jason’s characterization is impeccable (as always). I really loved Steph in this as well.

melograno, by saltwater_oracle Rating: Explicit Ship: Jason/Tim Word count: 18k Status: complete Summary: At the sound of a struck match, Tim twisted, fixed on the flame. “What?” His eyes followed the movement of Jason lighting his cigarette, and snuffing out the match in the dirt. The Florentine countryside was evidently quite dry, so he dug it in extra hard. For a while, they watched each other, until Tim sniffed the air and said, “You smoke Marlboros.” “That’s not in my personnel file?” “No, it…” he caught himself and shook his head, once, like he didn’t mean to and had to catch himself again. Jason had thrown him, somehow. “It is. Ha.” “Ha,” Jason repeated back, now thrown, himself. “What else is in there?” Beyond the cliff, a firework exploded in brilliant blues and greens, peacock-colored. It lit Tim’s left cheek and eye in cerulean. He was alien, cut from Kryptonite or something like it, horribly powerful and difficult to look at. Tim said, “your shit schedule,” and turned back to the sky. (Tim asks Jason to help him work an undercover op in Italy. Things get complicated.) My bookmark: JayTim case fic & romance against the backdrop of beautiful Florence, Italy. Lovely writing.

Tournée du Chat Noir, by Meabd Rating: Explicit Ship: Jason/Tim Word count: 23k Status: complete Summary: Red Hood, the sometimes-criminal, sometimes-anti-hero, meets a cat burglar with an opaque past and a flexible moral code. Jason Todd, the TA, meets an over-caffeinated, half-feral underclassman. These events are definitely not related, right? My bookmark: Delightful JayTim AU feat. Stray!Tim & TA!Jason. Love Tim’s characterization in this especially.

Manacled, by senlinyu Rating: Explicit Ship: Draco/Hermione Word count: 371k Status: complete Summary: Harry Potter is dead. In the aftermath of the war, in order to strengthen the might of the magical world, Voldemort enacts a repopulation effort. Hermione Granger has an Order secret, lost but hidden in her mind, so she is sent as an enslaved surrogate to the High Reeve until her mind can be cracked. My bookmark: Incredible, very dark, epic Voldemort Wins AU Dramione. The fic that finally got me into Dramione after many years in this fandom, while also possibly ruining me for all other Dramione fics. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth a read.

Love and Other Misfortunes, by senlinyu Rating: Mature Ship: Draco/Hermione Word count: 99k Status: complete Summary: Draco Malfoy is dying. He's part-Veela and needs his mate to survive. Post-war, Hermione Granger is a workaholic, up to her eyeballs in legal activism on behalf of Magical Beings, and hasn't yet noticed that Malfoy is the Magical Being who needs her most. “Because I don’t want to be saved by you just because you feel like you have to.” He was properly furious now. “I’m in love with you." Hermione stared at him. She knew but somehow hearing him say it made the air shimmer with magic. "I’m in love with you,” he said again, despairingly. “And that means I want you to be as happy as you possibly can. I’m completely obsessed and can’t stop thinking about this story.

But first, he's got to get the scrawny delinquent to shape up and fly right. On impulse Shiro shoved the low table out of the way, and drew his chair closer to Keith. He bent forward, elbows on his knees, and held out his hands, palm-up. Keith was already cornered—literally and figuratively, on so many levels—and Shiro wasn't about to make that sensation worse. But he could show he came unarmed. My bookmark: The story of Shiro and Keith’s pre-canon relationship. Long, well written and well characterized; reminded me why I love these two.
