I wish there was a way to tell HR departments that if they let me upload my resume then require me to fill out information by hand that is IN THE RESUME, I am legally allowed to air horn their house a 4:37 AM.
Secondly, if I upload my resume, which I tailored specifically to your listing so it'll get past the robo-checking, I will NOT be copying and pasting the whole thing under "role description" because I'm mostly sure that box is meant to stay brief but hey, have you considered SAYING THAT. OUT LOUD. WHERE APPLICANTS CAN KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. AND IF YOU WANT THE WHOLE RESUME CUT AND PASTED, WELL
#gif#job hunting#hi it's been a long week#why do i have to fill out eight screens of info when i have already uploaded my resume#which will be sorted and filed by a robot before human eyes even see it#also this is the second or third time i've had to use this exact interface#and if i ever find out who designed it second airhorn party

RUIN Theory! - Cassie and Micheal
Spoilers for RUIN, weâre focusing on Cassie and whoâor whatâshe is in this one. .
.
.
.
.
.
I can already see the hate from the âwhat she isâ statement, and trust me, Iâm not the biggest fan of it either, but it seems to be a theme in the books and it has some interesting connections in RUIN.
The first thing that caught my attention is a weird contradiction that I noticed with the description of the foxy plush and the menu when youâre near the log ride. Cassieâs description for the foxy plush is her saying how the log ride was so much fun, which, okay, that isnât odd or concerning. But the menu says that âThey never did finish the Foxy log ride. Safety Concerns.â Given the fact that the menu says things like âDonât think, just do it.â along with other suspicious sentences, we can assume that this is the yellow eyes/purple vein Helpi and/or the animatronic in the basement. So Cassie has apparently ridden the log ride before, but Helpi knows it was shut down early. In addition, there is a decapitated bot on the inactive log ride, which suggests that either the ceiling was way too low or that the speeds were too highâtheir heads pop off fairly easily (you can see this the one that falls with the shelf in front of Cassie). That to me says that she died on that ride, or that she had some sort of fake memories implanted in her head. She could still be a human if the memories were implanted just going off all the extensive tech we see, but I feel like itâs more plausible that sheâs a robot.
So who is Cassieâs dad? Through the descriptions of collectibles, we can learn that he likes Bonnie and collects antique Fazbear merch. We also learn that he was (or is) an engineer/technician for Fazbear. Iâve seen a few people theorize that William Afton is her father, which wouldnât surprise me, given his âI always come backâ motto, but I donât think thatâs the case. Thereâs a few things that got me thinking, including the sister location TV room in Security Breach. Micheal. It would make sense for him to have some ancient Fazbear stuff since heâs existed for a while and witnessed most of it. It would also make sense for Roxy being the one protecting Cassie. Micheal (or Foxybro, if you believe that theory) has been associated with Foxy, and since Roxanne is the closest animatronic to Foxy, I feel it matches up. And, since there arenât many (if any) human workers in the plex, so odor probably wouldnât be a problem. If heâs a technician, then he wouldnât be interacting with customers, so they wouldnât be able to file a complaint as well (even then, I donât think Fazbear would care too much). The only thing that might be a bump in the road is Micheal preferring Bonnie, but we could also chalk that up to him still caring for William. I mean, he was his dad. Those feelings donât just go away, no matter how terrible of a person he was. Just a thought.
Side note: there are purple glitches, most notably in the MXES Entity, that are helpful, or at least trying to keep the animatronic in the basement in the basement. That could possibly be Michealâs work, since he is associated with the color purple like William.

Continuation of this
Reconnecting ocular sensorsâŚ

All systems functional.
A wooden ceiling swims in and out of view as his eyes try to find a decent aperture for the location heâs in. Heâs not used to these eyes.
âM-mb-!â The shoutâs sudden, shorting out as his hearing connects. âMum-o, Sârâs up!â
He sits up, both arms unexpectedly functional. His eyes refocus. In front of him is a man of average height, with scruffy, blonde hair and massive mechanical wings at his back and a matching smear of grease on his cheek. Heâs got a pair of goggles sat on his head and some sort of bird-like gas mask hung around his throat. Very different from his usual clientele, but no matter.
His clockwork heart starts its steady ticking.
âWhy hello there. May I interest you in one of many purchasable wares?â His voice is a little scratchy, a little broken and fading, but nothing a bit of oil canât fix. The human turns his attention to him, and he notes black eyes and excitement.
âYou speak?â He asks, a gleam in his drooping eyes. âDo you have a name?â
âYou see, kind sir, Iâm a little different than you,â he replies like itâs not obvious, âNames are for people. I am but aââ
âGreat, itâs Scar now.â

Firmware updated.
âIn that case, pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Scar.â
The humanâs grin is blinding.
âIâm Grian. Thereâs also Mumbo. Youâll know him when you see him; fantastic mustache.â Grian and mumbo. He tucks the names away next to the rhythmic ticking and in his files, overriding the details of old customers. Actually, speaking of,
âIâm not too used to making assumptions so youâll have to be patient with me, but you donât appear to be a customer.â
âYou think,â Grian gasps, like heâs one of the androids that go around solving mysteries instead of a salesbot.
âHave you recently purchased me from a store? Or perhaps pillaged me from the back?â Wouldnât be the first time. It happens more often than youâd think, with shops deeming him unusable after a simple bug. Itâd explain the unfamiliarity with how he runs.
âSomething like that!â
âIn that case, Iâll give you a rundown of my functions and of proper robot care.â He goes to straighten his lapels, and finds metal beneath metal hands.
âOh, no need to do thatâwait for Mumbo to get here, I wonât remember a lick of it.â
âIf you insist,â he mumbles idly, distracted by staring into the cavity of his own chest.
He recognizes most of his insides, which is, expectedly, a good thing. Whatâs less of a good thing is that what he does recognize is halfway hanging outside his body, and the rest he doesnât recognize. Even his shell is a patchwork of a lighter tan metal (Scar, he gets the name now), the lines clean and lightly rippled like his mechanic had to laser cut away ripped edges.
Oil runs a little hotter through his limbs, and thereâs a click and whirr of a fan kicking in. His heart ticks faster.
His heartâs the most concerning, brass and spring coiled, instead of the pistons heâs used to. It looks like heâd been torn apart and mauled, and while heâs used to being sent shop to shop, the notion that someone would rip his shell, pluck out his core and attempt to kill him before tossing him out isâ
Firewall activated.
Oh, right. Heâs not supposed to feel terror.
The ticking, which just started to blare in his ears, goes silent. His head dips and his eyes dull, the aperture spiraling out until all thatâs left is pupil.

PART 3
You awoke to Hanks phone ringing and him cursing it as he answered.
âWhat?â He grumbled as you heard a distant voice. You hadnât moved from your spot on Connor. You yawned and rolled onto your back stretching.
âDid you sleep well detective?â He asked and you nodded dazed.
âCanât Reed handle it the pricks thereâ Hank snapped.
âYeah, whateverâ he hung up and laid back down.
âAssholesâ he muttered and you chuckled softly. He laid down with a soft thud from the mattress. You still cuddled into Connor he mustâve put his heaters on or something because you were toasty warm.
âDid you put your heaters on?â You asked.
âIs it too warm?â Connor asked and you shook your head.
âNo, just making me not wanna moveâ you chuckled.
âFine by meâ Hank sighed as you heard Sumo bark.
âThere isnât enough room buddyâ Hank said and you heard Sumo whine.
âAw, Sumoâ you sat up slowly crossing your legs and pet the bed lightly. He jumped up, in your face licking and making weird noises. You laughed trying to control the big beast as he finally laid down.
âWhat time is it?â You asked frowning.
âItâs currently 2:33 pmâ Connor said.
âGeezâ you said realising you had napped for a while.
âYou were rather exhausted detectiveâ Connor said and you flushed. You glanced to Hank who smirked almost proud and you glared slightly huffing. Hank was relaxed for once, a small smile on his lips, eyes closed as he leant against the head rest, his breathing even and his scent inviting. You leant back to lean against his side and he chuckled softly.
âMy phone on your table?â You asked and he grunted handing it to you.
âThanksâ you said opening it. You had a few messages and emails but ignored them for now as you scrolled through social media. Connor sat up also, stiff in his movements and not relaxing back, you guess he didnât need to relax back his body wouldnât hurt. Hanks arm draped around your middle while Connor stared.
âWhat are you doing?â Hank asked.
âIn a sense Iâm making a memoryâ Connor said.
âI can record certain things and save themâ he added.
âYou show this to anyone-â you elbowed him gently.
âThank you detectiveâ Connor smiled and you smirked.
âGreatâ Hank sighed.
âTwo against the old grumpy alphaâ he grumbled and you laughed. Connor cracked a grin, laughing wasnât his strongest suit yet.
The day went on with you staying in Hanks bed. You had relaxed and calmed down after what had happened this morning, you were content in the soft blanket and leaning against Hank. Connor made you some food which was nice before sitting down again. It was going smoothly till your job demanded attention.
You all headed to the crime scene three stabbings in a club. Upon entering the room you gulped it was a private room on the sex side of the club. One android, two humans. The android was in the corner looking beat up and ruined by a bat or something, then stabbed, the two humans were on the other wall with stab wounds on their chest area. You got their identityâs, the android was called Kyla the humans were Mason and Fay. Kyla was designed as a sex robot and stayed that way voluntarily. The other two were also workers here Fay a beta and Mason an omega.
âWhat you got Connor?â Hank called as Connor stood by the door analysing.
âIt was the android that went first, hit with the bat then stabbed on that wall, the other two tried to stop it, signs of struggle, possible fight before being stabbed themselvesâ Connor said as he walked to the android and looked over it.
âI can probe itâs memory to see what happenedâ he said.
âGo aheadâ Hank said leaving the room to brief. You looked over the bodyâs again, there was a fight, something had gone very wrong or the killer just got his victims in one room perfectly.
âThe android wasnât supposed to be hereâ Connor spoke.
âHow come?â You asked as he stood.
âThe android came in to check on the suspicious noise before being dragged in and beaten to deathâ you sighed nodding, poor thing.
âAny traces where our killer went or who they are?â You asked.
âThere are traces of DNA under the victims nails, matching a Gen Collinsâ you nodded.
âSend me her informationâ you said grabbing a spare tablet. You looked through her profile, 30, alpha female, she was tall and built like she was in military. You glanced through her past, she was in military, got kicked out for violent tendencies. Sheâs been prescribed by a doctor for anger management medication and therapy though she never took.
âWe got one anger issued alpha on the run â you sighed to Hank.
âYepâ he grumbled.
âWe got any leads?â He asked as Connor came over.
âNot yetâ Connor said and you and Hank nodded.
âRight come onâ Hank said to you and Connor and you both followed.
Back at the station you all went through files hoping to find her whereabouts, she was no doubt dangerous and pissed about something.
You were at your desk for hours, it was nighttime when you decided to look outside. You stopped your task and leant back stretching. Your back popped slightly and you sighed hunching back over before sitting up. Connor came over to you and you gave him your attention.
âAre you alright detective?â He asked a slight frown on his face.
âIâm alrightâ you smiled.
âI need food and a shower thoughâ you said yawning.
âIâll drive you homeâ Hank said from his desk.
âYou got anything?â You asked talking about the case.
âA whole lot of fuck allâ he grumbled shutting down the screen and stretching.
âI need a drinkâ he grumbled making you chuckle.
âHome it isâ you said shutting off your screen also and standing.
Hank dropped you off like he said, Connor following you in your house again while Hank drove off.
âHeâll be ok, wonât be?â You asked hanging your coat up.
âI do believe the Lieutenant has cut down on drinking, so, yes he willâ Connor assured and you nodded. You shook your head laughing slightly as you took out a quick microwave meal.
You sat and ate happy to get some food in your stomach even if it tasted horrible. Connor sat and watched TV, well at least you think he was.
âIâm gonna have a showerâ you called placing your rubbish in the bin.
âOkâ was all Connor said and you nodded.
You washed and dried before getting dressed into your PJâs, Connor was still on the couch. You stood by him but he hadnât taken notice.
âConnor?â You asked, he blinked and looked to you.
âSorry detectiveâ he said.
âItâs alrightâ you chuckled.
âYou ok?â You asked.
âYes, just going through some files is all, I apologiseâ you shook your head and sat by him.
âDonât apologiseâ you smiled.
âFind anything?â You asked curiously.
âIt wasnât for the caseâ he admitted and you frowned curious.
âWhat was it for?â You asked head tilting.
âIf you wanna tell meâ you added. If you didnât know any better youâd say the blue in his cheeks represented a blush.
âI am required to fulfill my roll in taking care of you and Hank both emotionally and physicallyâ you flushed a little as he spoke.
âYou donât have to take care of us, we take care of each otherâ you said.
âItâs not all on you, Iâm just not good with thisâ you sighed.
âItâs new to me and though Hank was-â you flushed remembering what happened earlier.
âEager, weâre gonna have some issuesâ you mumbled.
âWhat issues?â Connor asked frowning slightly.
âWell me, I overthink overthinking, Hank Is insecure even if he doesnât admit it, Iâm trying to please both you and Hank, Hanks the only one with experience!â you rambled a bit realising you hadnât thought this through.
âAnd Hanks distantâ you sighed sagging into the couch.
âMaybe it was a bad ideaâ you said sadly.
âY/nâ Connor said and you looked to him, he rarely said your name.
âThis wasnât a bad idea, this will take time to get used to and figure our mission out togetherâ you smiled at him.
âThough I donât understand many things I am willing to learnâ he added.
âAnd tryâ he said another blue tint to his cheeks.
âMay I kiss you detective?â He asked and you smiled as your heart pounded. You nodded and he leant forward, you closed your eyes as he pressed his synthetic lips to yours. It felt like real ones only smoother, you hummed softly leaning up body eager again. He pulled back eyes in a daze as you smiled slightly.
âI have to return to cyber life for some adjustments soonâ he said and you frowned.
âAre you ok?â You asked worried.
âIâm ok, theyâre going to add features to my body and systemâ you frowned.
âIâll be better equipped like a male alphaâ you flushed at his words and leant back into the seat avoiding his eyes.
âOhâ you stuttered out.
âWhen- when is this?â You asked.
âTomorrowâ you nodded embarrassed.
âHow long will you be gone?â You asked.
âOnly for the nightâ you nodded again.
âOkâ you said softly.
You frowned as your phone buzzed. You answered and frowned when you heard a familiar voice.
âJimmy?â You questioned and he sighed confirming. Connor frowned also leaning in.
âCan you come get Hank pleaseâ you glanced to Connor at his words.
âMans messed up againâ your heart sank.
âIm on my wayâ you hung up.
You quickly got dressed sort of and drove to Jimmyâs. Connor followed you as you walked in spotting Hank in the corner slumped over.
âWhat happened?â You asked Jimmy.
âHe got drunk started babbling on about you and Connor before breaking down and passing outâ you processed and sighed.
âThanksâ you muttered going to him.
âHankâ you said as you slid into the booth next to him.
âHankâ you dragged out. He gurgled out a sound and you raised an eyebrow.
âPerhaps I should support him to the carâ Connor said.
âYepâ you agreed getting out of the seat.
âHankâ Connor said and Hank grumbled. He helped the man up who groaned and grumbled eyes opening and closing. He finally focused on you, your arms were on your hips.
âWhyâre you glaring at me?â He said like a child.
âWeâre going homeâ you rolled your eyes handing Jimmy some money as a tip.
âIâm sorryâ you said and he shrugged.
As you drove Hank home the man grumbled the whole way there. You unlocked your door before taking him to the bathroom.
âHankâ you said as Connor sat him down on the toilet. The alpha looked around taking in his surroundings before taking you and Connor in.
âFuckâ Hank toppled over and you jumped back a bit.
You looked away as he threw up in the toilet. You held down your stomach and sighed going to get him a drink while Connor watched him.
The toilet flushed and you went back in with a glass of water.
âThanksâ he mumbled sipping it. He leant back against the cold tiles as did you as you sat down staring at him.
âStop staringâ Hank sighed.
âHank weâre concernedâ Connor said.
âWell be unconcernedâ he slurred.
âHankâ you sighed sadly.
âWhat?â He scoffed slightly.
âYouâre not my mumâ he chuckled at his joke.
âNo Iâm your partnerâ you said.
âThatâs unfortunate for youâ he smirked.
âHankâ Connor said almost in warning.
âShut up tin canâ Hank huffed.
âLook at you both sad faced over me, itâs depressing shit manâ he sighed.
âYou know youâre probably better off leaving me here and going off with Connorâ although he was drunk his words hurt.
âHank-â you said startled.
âI mean the fuck you want me for? Disgusting old, alpha, pervert with a pretty omega and perfect robocop over hereâ you bit back tears.
âI canât give you a family, canât give you what you needâ you felt a tear roll don your face as he continued.
âI donât want a family I just want you twoâ you said taking a deep breath.
âMaybe youâre fucked in the head tooâ you flinched at his words and clenched your jaw, he was just drunk.
âThe fucked amigos!â He cheered and you glared at the floor.
âHank youâve upset the detective and meâ Connor said.
âYeah? And?â You stood and quickly left at his words.
You curled up in your bed tears rolling down your face. He didnât want this, he didnât want the three of you to be together, your alpha didnât want you or Connor. You hugged your pillow tightly before a light knock came.
âDetectiveâ it was Connor who called.
You didnât answer so he let himself in.
âIâve let the Lieutenant rest on your pull out couch, heâs unconscious Iâm afraidâ you sniffled and nodded.
âHeâs just drunkâ he muttered.
âIs he?â You turned to face him. Connor couldnât answer.
âHe doesnât want me or you! Or us! Maybe I am fucked in the head, weâre all fucked in the headâ you cried.
âIâm stupid for ever dreamingâ you laid down again, back to Connor as you cried. Your mind was going wild you couldnât handle the rejection he had just said. You tried to reason but there wasnât anything to reason with.
The bed shifted but you didnât move as Connor laid behind you. He slipped his arm under your head and another around your waist. You clutched your pillow tightly and cried softly.
Your tears dried and stuck to your face, your eyes were droopy as you tried to stay awake.
âSleepâ you heard Connor mutter as he pulled the blanket over you both. Your eyes closed and you sighed letting darkness take over.

Iâve been holding off on making this post because I wanted to try it out myself and get settled in and make sure everything went okay, but seeing as Iâve gone ahead and updated my site and everything I thought now might be a good time to start talking about this publicly!Â
If youâve known me for more than five minutes you know I fucking hate Webtoon, like, a lot. Every aspect of it disgusts me to the core of my being, and while Webtoon is the ugliest version of them the aspects that I hate also extend to basically any comic aggregate site. I hate that they treat artists like content robots, I hate that they treat comic readers like morons who arenât capable of engaging with complex stories, I hate that they actively try to strip away all the cool parts of indie comics by cultivating sterile and impersonal environments that discourage artistic experimentation and unique expression.
So! I hope youâll be interested in what I have to say about this new platform thatâs (hopefully) going to be out of alpha this summer. If you think you like reading comics on Webtoon, I really encourage you to check out Dillyhub once it launches. Thatâs the short version, but I have a LOT to say about this! So Iâm putting the rest of this under a cut.
Full disclosure, Iâm not getting paid or anything for this. The creative outreach at Dillyhub contacted me a few weeks ago asking if Iâd be interested in having Kidd Commander be one of their launch titles when they go live this summer. I was hesitant at first, since I actively distrust anything claiming to be For Creators at this point, but they answered my pushy questions patiently and everything seemed on the up and up so I gave it a shot; Iâve been needing a mobile mirror for KC anyway. Eventually they invited me to the alpha creator discord, where theyâve been working directly with all of us artists to improve the platform, and now to be honest Iâm REALLY excited for this thing to get off the ground. Nobody asked me to make this post, but since Iâve spent years whining and bitching about how other services do wrong by their creators, I thought Iâd talk about this one thatâs doing things right.
So, the biggest advantage this site has for creators over others in my opinion is that it. Treats us like individuals, regardless of follower count lmfao. If youâre a new person just starting out with your new webcomic, hereâs what webtoon does for you:
Note: you donât get a custom banner, you donât even get to choose the solid color it is. That big circle icon is ALSO the image that shows up in searches, but everywhere else on the site itâs a 100x100px square, so you have to choose whether you want it to look good as a giant circle at the top of your comicâs page OR whether you want to look good in search results. Which, by the way, is the ONLY way for people to find you if youâre not partnered. And thatâs it! You have no monetization options, you wonât show up on the genre pages, and when someone DOES stumble across your page it looks super unprofessional. Good Luck!Â
Now hereâs my Dillyhub page(s):
You donât get a static banner and one icon, you get a whole carousel banner with as many images as you want front and center as soon as you get to the project page. You get seven (custom!) genre tags, as opposed to Webtoonâs single tag you have to pick from their list, and plenty of room to talk about your work. The episodes are even laid out better, you get a MUCH bigger preview space to work with and theyâre nice and big on the bottom half of the page:
you know, like theyâre actually presenting ART lmfao.
Thatâs already an ENORMOUS improvement, but hereâs my favorite thing.
o hm thatâs a lot of super cushy settings I have for every individual episode, but whatâs that, Episode Type?
LIKE.
listen, i know this is probably a bit specialized if youâre not a comic maker yourself, but this is a HUGE DEAL. You can post vertically OR page by page! You can even post pages two at a time for double page spreads, or so they read like a physical comic book! AND their specs are really open, as long as the file meets the size requirement you can make it whatever shape you want. You donât have to reformat all your shit to post here!! I posted the entire first volume of KC STRAIGHT FROM THE PRINT FILES in like half an hour!!! The episodes can also be any amount of pages, you can post a single page or an entire chapter all in one go!
So thatâs just the project page for the comic, letâs see what happens when I click on my username there.
Each author gets their own unique page (which you can tack a vanity url to!) to present themselves however they want! You always have the banner at the top, but beyond that you have a ton of options. Among other incredibly useful tools that really should just be bare fucking minimum at this point, like the ability to preview your page on different devices, you start customizing your blank page with this set of widgets,
and from THERE you can customize them MORE, you can promote your patreon or your kickstarter or whatever! Having this creator space ALSO means that if you run several comics, or if you want to promote your comic AND your illustrations, you can just separate them into individual projects! Each with their own page! This is also really nice as a reader because you can subscribe to a creator but you can also just subscribe to specific projects, if you donât want to get ALL of their stuff in your inbox. Itâs so good yâall hh.
Once again, all of this functionality is just THERE as soon as you make your account. You donât need to be âpartneredâ or whatever the fuck, you donât need to meet a certain follower threshold to unlock the ability to operate normally. You get your own creator space to present yourself how you prefer, you get pages for all your projects, you can even set up monetization options (and change them for individual pages IN a project) right from the start.
ok ok letâs compare this to my webtoon page
oh thatâs right webtoon just puts your greyed out name at the bottom of each comic and thatâs it because human beings donât make this stuff, my bad lol anyway
Other fun shit that Dillyhub does that makes me feel like theyâre people who have actually consumed or made comics on the internet at some point in their lives:
-When you log into the âstudioâ space, youâre in your creator account. When you log OUT of the studio space, itâs like you swap to a âreaderâ account, where you can access your pull list and comment on things with a different name and profile icon. Again, maybe only cool if youâre a creator, but if you ARE then you know exactly why this is incredibly useful lmao
-You can set up âhiddenâ projects, so if you only want certain things to be accessible by certain people or to not show up in searches thatâs an option! You have SO much control here itâs great.
-The comment section has moderation options GODDD. You also have a real comment space, you know, so it actually encourages building a community (and a rapport with your community, if you like), and you also can just turn comments off entirely if you want! I havenât used it much yet, obviously, but itâs been made very clear in the discord that artists want better control over their comment sections and the devs have it on their priority list.
-Absolutely every step of customization gives you a preview before itâs live, so you can easily see what these images youâre posting in different places are going to look like before you beam them to your followersâ inboxes. This includes individual episodes!
-This was sort of in one of the screenshots but itâs important so Iâm saying it here too: the option to mark individual episodes as mature or with content warnings, rather than having to mark an entire comic as Mature Spooky Scary Content because of one or two pages getting a bit hairy.
This site is only in alpha right now, and itâs invite-only until they get to beta (for creators; anyone can make a reader account! but they havenât set up a way to browse comics without direct links yet so) but honest to god itâs already blowing every other site Iâve used clean out of the water. And the staff has been really kind and responsive to us proposing fixes or changes! I will always defend individual websites as being the best option for an indie comic, but everybodyâs gotta start somewhere and we NEED something that isnât Tumblr or Webtoon to fill this role; this site feels a lot more like a symbiotic relationship than any of the other staples available for new creators right now. If youâre a comic reader and you want to see your favorite comics on Dillyhub Iâd suggest keeping an eye on this site and once itâs live start poking them to look into it, and if youâre a creator follow their social media and hop in when they open up for anybody to join. I would LOVE to see this site take off as a viable option for hosting and reading comics.
Thanks for reading all this! I havenât quite finished setting up yet, but if you want to poke around a project/creator page for yourself mine is here have at it. As things progress Iâm sure Iâll have more to say, but since Iâm usually so aggressively negative about places like this I just wanted to give some credit where it was due. fucking finally.

Kookies, Trojans & Malware

[Sparks Masterlist]
[Tag Yourself]
Beta: @nightshadevinterâ Pairing: Robot!Jungkook x Reader Genre: Friendship, Comedy, Soft boy, Fluff, Action, Adventure, Romance. Words: 7.6k
Summary: Jungkook is a robot police officer. He obeys and upholds the laws. After mistaking you for the criminal you open up his world and soon he is ready and willing to break the law for you.
You were making an honest living selling romance novels and the latest was about a robot carer and a sick human; right at the end there was a hint of love. Having just got off the phone with your publisher, the story had gone viral. Everyone was asking for a robot-human love story, but you didn't know if you could write about that without having written from a robotâs perspective. You hadn't even met a robot outside of general shopping or passing them by on the street.Â
You really liked the idea but wished you had some sort of extensive interaction with a robot. But this wasnât the case. Your phone alarm went off, you had to pay rent, before the landlord called. But when you checked your bank there was a strange transaction going into your bank. It was from two days ago for a huge sum of 50,000,000KRW
This was super strange, you wondered why the police or bank hadnât been calling or breaking down your door. That must only happen in movies, you turned back to your computer. The door was kicked open smashing into the wall beside you, making you squeak with shock as the place was flooded with police officers holding guns.
Restrained by someone you heard them recite your rights, "Good evening, I, police officer, robot division, Jeon Jungkook have come to place you under arrest for suspected fraud. Anything you say or do can be held against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney; if you can't afford one, one will be given to you. I am a robot police officer..." he spoke through the whole spiel.Â
You sighed exasperated, this isn't what you had in mind when you said you wanted to interact with a robot. "I am always recording, if you are uncomfortable with a robot police officer I will step aside and let my fellow officers take over"
You blinked slowly as he walked you out the hall, it wasnât much of an apartment and the old lady next door peaked out her door to watch you get taken away. They would definitely talk while you were away. "We will head to the patrol vehicle and take you back to the station where we will interrogate you"
"Wait sir, uh... robot man, my cat?" You said, making him stop and look down at you whilst trying to process the meaning of your words. She was an odd cross-eyed most of the time but you loved her, she could hardly take care of herself while you were there. How would she survive on her own? You would implore to bring her with you.
"Your cat?" The robot repeated as a meow was heard behind you. He turned eyes wide looking at the animal who had stepped into the hallway "What about your feline companion?"
"Well, we can't let her get hurt, can I take her with me?" You asked, looking up at him hopeful, âShe is only a little baby.â
"I am unsure?" He tilted his head, you could practically see him searching for an answer in his hard robes. The lights scanning past his eyes were an indication of his exploration of protocols and policies when it came to pets.
"If you leave a defenseless animal on their own they will die. Isn't a police officer's job to protect?" You countered hoping his system would understand that. You had never tried to outsmart a robot but you thought you could make a compelling argument.
He paused again, thinking over your words, before nodding, "Obtain your feline companion and we shall continue the arrest" He uncuffed your wrists but held them firmly in his hands making you look up at his stern eyes. âI am warning you if you try to run I will have to restrain you.
You grabbed your cat packing a small bag of food, and a small bag of litter, and a clean tray. Watching the officers in your apartment taking your things for evidence. Taking the cat and scooping her into the small cat carrier you walked back over to officer Jeon, âI must cuff you as is procedure, but I assure you, the animal will not be harmed."
You placed down the cage holding your hands behind your back letting him re-cuff your wrists. He leaned down gently picking up the cage his large hand secured around the handle. He guided you along and you tried to turn back to study him some more, "mister robot man?"
"My name is cyber office Jeon Jungkook." He looked straight ahead and you smirked at the professional personality programmed into his hard drives. The cat made a small meow and he adjusted the cage holding it in a way that kept it still as he walked.
"Sorry, um I was just wondering if I could ask you some questions later?" This would be an amazing opportunity to gather intel about robots for your next story. He was handsome and moved with such poise, there was a faint hum under his skin like the buzz of electricity in the air when your apartment got quiet.
"You have the freedom and right to speak" he smiled, you saw the Police cruiser just across the street and headed for it but he pulled you to the right and the two of you were walking away from the vehicle and down the street.
âAre we walking to the station?â You laughed sarcastically.
âNo, though I am equipped with GPS and am fully charged and able to walk to the police station, I feel it would be much more comfortable for humans and more time-efficient to take the police cruiser parked across the road, driven by officer Hanâ He replied seriously gesturing to the very same police cruiser you were walking away from.
"It was sarcasm,â You snorted, âIf that is your car, why are we walking away? where are you going?"
"To the intersection, Jaywalking is illegal" He sighed, checking on the animal which was moving around the carrier âI apologize I donât often pick up human nuances. Perhaps you would be so kind as to teach me more?â
"Okay..." You hummed, the two of you finally reached the pedestrian crossing, you went to cross but he didn't budge, making you fall back and hit his broad chest "What, why did you stop?"
"We must wait for the pedestrian light to turn green indicating that it is safe to cross," He said as if he was reciting it for children and you rolled your eyes.Â
"You follow every rule?" You questioned his dedication to the cause.
"I follow all rules." he said with a definite tone like he couldnât be swayed.
"So what happens if the light is red but across the street, there was a man stealing a woman's handbag. You would have to wait for the light to turn green before crossing and pursuing the criminal and by that time he would have gotten away and may have even killed someone. When you could have captured him and saved lives and stopped more crimes. I mean really are you not aiding and abetting the criminal by watching them getaway.â
You saw him process this information until the light turned green, the symbol of the walking man prompting the robot to walk briskly across the road. As you walked back to the car you laughed âYour police officer friends are Jaywalking, you should write them a ticket.â
âMy fellow police officers are the exception, I cannot turn against them,â He said, seeming to not understand this element of his instructions either.
âSo if your fellow officers go rogue and shoot someone innocent you let them, they need to uphold the law so they should be the prime example, should they not?âÂ
âI donât know, I must ask the sergeant and review my policies and proceduresâ You both finally got to the car, officer Jeon opened the door placing the cat down on the curb and turning to you, "you must sit in the back. Please mind your head"
He placed his hand over your head and guided you into the vehicle and even leaned over to buckle you in. "I will place your cat in the seat next to you" You were soon on your way to the police station. Where you were ushered into the interrogation room with Jungkook who held your cat carrier and bag.
The interrogation began and you were told to answer truthfully.Â
âWhat is your name?â Officer Jeon asked with no writing or recording impliments. How was he recording your answers? Was he literally recording your answers?
âHow about this, I will answer one of your questions, officer, and you answer one of my questions.â You asked curiously.
âWhat is your name, miss?â he asked again.
âMy name is (Your full name),â You said and he nodded just as he opened his mouth to speak you asked your question quickly, âHow do you record my answers without a pen and paper or laptop, and when you record my answers how does it get into the police system?âÂ
He didnât answer looking at you and you leaned forward, âCome on it was my turn you have to be fair,â
âI am completely fair and justâ he sat up straighter how that was possible for the prim and proper robot your would never know, âI record everything, it is saved on my system and the back up system whilst also being wirelessly sent to the national system where it is filed and finally everything is live fed to the bureau.â
âThatâs really nifty. So you are recording everything now, where from?â You looked him up and down.
âThat was more than one question miss y/n, I thought you were being fair and just, I am recording everything,â he raised one finger with a smirk and gesticulating another as he continued, âmy eyes are the camera and my ears record everything I hear. That is two questions for me.â
âCorrect,â You leaned in a little more intrigued further by his systems and personality and all that they entailed. He asked how old you were and where you lived and you answered leaning a little more over the desk. âWhat do you like to do?â
âWhat?â He looked shocked
âHey you canât answer a question with a question,â You pouted and he shut his mouth processing the meaning of your words, âYou can just ask me to explain you donât have to search everything. What do you like to do? it means like what are your hobbies?â
âOfficer Han likes playing pokerâ He said slowly
âNo, I asked what you like to do, not him,â You laughed at his expression. He seemed stumped âLike when you arenât working.â
âI am always working and when I am not working I am chargingâ He said âNow, I have some questions about the recent activity in your bankâŚâ
You were shocked all he knew was work and sleep, it was uncommon for humans to only know these two traits as well but you hoped he got to do something.
âHave you ever watched a movie?â You blurted out and he froze in the middle of reciting dates to you.
âI have obtained information from many movies, I understand pop culture references and have a list of top one hundred famous movie quotes in my system.â
âBut have you seen them, like at a movie theatre?â
âNo I havenât.â He said looking impassive but you felt a little upset, sure he was a robot but that didnât mean he had to spend his entire life working. You had no more questions for him after that finding you were a little scared to find out more.Â
You were made to stay overnight in the cell. It was nice for a cell, there didnât seem to be anyone else in but you, the bedding was freshly washed and pressed. What fancy cell was this? âItâs nice huh, at night Jungkook washes all the bedding and when he wakes up he makes the beds.â
âIs he allowed holidays?â You asked, âHe only works, havenât you tried to let him see other things outside of work.âÂ
âI am afraid he wouldnât understand it, he is meticulous with his programs and doesnât understand many other concepts.â The man said, watching officer Jeon walk over with a tray of food, âGood job Jungkook, you did a wonderful jobâ
âHey officer Jeon, would you like to sit and have dinner with me?â You sat on the floor and gestured to the floor in front of you, he tilted his head.
âI donât eat food miss y/n,â He smiled âI am a robot,â
âWhat do robots eat?â you grinned curiously, he ran off and came back with a bottle of something.
âEveryday I drink this liquid and every night before recharging I expel the old liquid, it keeps everything running smoothly.â He smiled pouring himself a cup.
âWell come sit with me and we can eat together,â You gestured and he sat smiling and you held up your cup and he held up his and you clicked glasses. Something flickered in his eyes.Â
You watched him take a long drink as you took a sip and he stopped pulling the glass back down, swallowing thickly. He held the cup looking at the liquid inside and whenever you would take a sip he would drink a little more liquid.
The two of you were talking all night and you had finished your food and drink but he still held the cup sipping slowly watching you tell him about how you were afraid of trains, because when you were a kid you had been left on a train and bad things happened. âYou have been holding that empty cup for ten minutes now Jungkook, you canât fool me. Oh! I mean Officer Jeon.â
âItâs okay, I finished after you told me about the story about the sick human and the robot caregiver.â He grinned, âI liked that one, it is nice to see the robot caregiver being able to help the sick human.â
âYou are getting tired, Miss y/n, itâs time to sleepâ He said softly as you stood walking the tray to the door of the cell and he took the tray and left. You got into the bed and officer Jeon sat at his desk plugging a cord into his arm. You saw his shoulders slump indicating that he had powered down to charge and you closed your eyes falling asleep.
 ~
The next morning brought with it your discharge from the overnight cells, the officers thanked you for your cooperation and gave you a card in case you needed to contact them. Officer Jeon and Han drove you back to your apartment.
Officer Jeon insisted on carrying the cat carrier up the stairs. It seemed when the officer had woken up, your cat had snuck out of her cage and slept on his lap. The two continued to play throughout the morning and when you woke it almost seemed like the robot police officer was a little brighter.
You arrived at your apartment and watched as he tried to find where to put the cage. He was so endearing, you were going to ask even though you think you knew the answer. âWould you like to go to the movies with me, to watch a movie?â
He was snapped out of his dilemma of where to put the cage looking almost regretful, as he was about to turn you down. You took a deep breath, and opened your mouth to downplay it as just a friendly offer to get him away from work when a screeching of tires sounded outside your apartment.Â
The two of you ran to the window and saw Officer Han shot down. There were beeping sounds coming from the robot officer and you looked at him horrified. âI just called for backup. Stay here and I will restrain them.â He said and the men started shouting and running into the building.
You heard them say your name and you knew his robot ears did too, âYou are in danger. Do everything I tell you and stay behind me.â He looked at the cat cage and went to go out the apartment door and you caught his hand, âFollow me down the fire escape?â
The two of you got out and ran to the police car, Hanâs was still alive, but barely. âMove him to the back seat, we will take him to the hospitalâ You whispered, trying not to panic., âCan you drive?â
âWell yes, but I canât do car chases its against the law, that's why Hanâs drivesâ He said,Â
âOkay, Jungkook I need you to get in the passenger seat and close your eyes and donât open them until we get there, I want you to get a GPS to the hospital and turn on the sirensâ He noddedÂ
âGo straight.â You took off and the sirens were put on, true to his word he kept his eyes shut allowing you to maneuver through the traffic and got to the hospital stopping in the emergency bay. âWe are here. Can I open my eyes?âÂ
âNo wait,â you moved around the car and opened his door as the doctors ran out to grab officer Han. Leaning over Jungkook you took off his seat belt looking up. You got lost in his features, they were so smooth and his eyelashes were so long and you wanted to touch his hair. You let out a shaky breath and he seemed to feel it against his cheek, the cat carrier on his lap stirred and a meow was heard between you.
His eyes drifted open and focused on you, you were flustered. âI am in trouble, I am getting orders to return. They are wondering why I left the scene of the crime, I donât know why I listened to a civilian. It went against all the policies and procedures, you broke the law.â He pushed the cat carrier into your hands and drove you back to the station.Â
âOfficer Jeon, you defied orders and you left a crime scene, let the two gunmen get away, can you explain why this is?â The sergeant said, you sat in the corner as a suspect to this crime and you had to give a statement regarding officer Hanâs shooting.
This was it you were going to get in trouble for saving a police officer, âWhen I saw officer Han, I just moved instinctively to save him.â Your mouth fell open, he just lied, he cyber police officer Jeon Jungkook just lied to the sergeant, isnât that against everything he stands for.
âI want you to hand over the footage of this incident?â The sergeant said
âThere is noneâ He said âMy wires shorted out and there is no footage from getting in the car to getting to the hospitalâ
Another lie. What is happening?
âJeon Jungkook, you are going to be scheduled for maintenance at the end of the month.â The sergeant said âYou are off active duty until thenâ
After all the more important officers left, Jungkook slumped into his chair. âOfficer Jeon, I am so sorry, I didnât mean for you to get taken off duty. I just wanted to save your partner officer Han, he was going to dieâ
âI donât know what to do for twenty-one days, sixteen hours, forty-three minutes and eleven seconds. Ten secondsâ He stated with no emotion, âNine seconds.â
âYou could come stay with me, my cat already loves you. Plus what if those guys come back,â You smiled and he looked up at the two of you before nodding. Grabbing a small supply of the special liquid he drinks the two of you took a taxi back to your apartment.Â
~
Jungkook looked around; he wasnât wearing his uniform but instead was wearing a tracksuit. Looking him up and down you laughed, âFirst we need to find you some clothes. I am pretty sure I have some old clothes of my dadâs, I couldnât part with them all these years so now I guess I can finally get some use out of them.âÂ
You found him a button up and some dress pants and he went to get changed. When he stepped out you could help but tear up a little, âWhat is wrong?â Jungkook strode across the room and looked at you, âHave I done something to offend you or make you upset?â
âNo, noâ you sniffed, laughing at his over the top reaction. âI just miss my father.â
âWhere is he?â
âHe passed away a few years ago,â You said and Jungkook seemed to slowly process that information but struggled to comprehend the extent of the feeling.
âI am sorry for your loss,â He sighed, âI wish humans were like Robots, there are rarely any deaths, just missing data that can be restored. I donât think I could ever truly understand permanent death.â
âImagine the people you love and care for, your friends and people you work with and you are having a great time and death is never having that again,â It was an odd way of explaining it but you think it summed it up well enough. Jungkookâs eyes flashed and he nodded seeming to file the information away to review.
You took Jungkook out. it was his first day off and you were going to make it special, dragging him to the movies you tried to find something fairly new that his internet filled head wouldnât have seen. If Jungkook was all about the law he wouldnât be watching bootlegs on the dark web.
You pulled him into a romantic comedy, part of it was because you wanted to watch it and another part was for research to see how Jungkook would act. He seemed engaged watching the couple fall in love with their little awkward moments.
There was a scene where the main character and the love interest were locked in a gaze. It made your heart beat quickly, it was such a heavy feeling. Jungkook shifted uncomfortably and you wondered if he felt it.
After the movie the two of you headed to an aquarium and after the aquarium you were heading home when you passed a busker and you started dancing giving them some money and laughing as you swayed to the beat. Dragging Jungkook to dance with you, he seemed a little nervous but you were quick to praise him. His eyes locked on the Robot with a shirt that read âhope worldâ dancing and he analysed the moves joining in.Â
The two of you headed home and you ordered yourself some dinner. The two of you sat down while he drank and you talked about the movie. âWhy did it get slow when the two of them locked eyes?â Jungkook asked, finally addressing the elephant in the room you had wanted to bring up.Â
âWell when you fall in love with someone it's like your heart speeds up but everything stops working and all you can think about is that someone.â You said he processed it, eyes flashing, it was like neither of you wanted to go to bed. You had started watching âCircuit Chefâ the host was hilarious and he had a new sidekick who really livened up the show.
âI didnât know robots could do other thingsâ Jungkook said âI just assumed we were all the same, but after reading your book and looking around I can see robots have many functions, but why canât we have all of them? Humans can do anything they want but us Robots are only programmed to do such a small portion.â
âI want to be human, I want to do everything, try everythingâ he sighed, âNow that I am off duty I canât even uphold the law or I will get in trouble, I am just a basic command robot.â
âThen I command you to try everything you ever wanted to do, act like a human.â Yawning, Jungkook looked at you, seeing how your eyes were closed and your head had fallen onto his shoulder. He thought you were asleep, he scooped you up and your eyes opened.Â
âI am sorry I thought you were asleep,â He apologized but continued walking you to the bed, he laid you down tucking you in. Jungkook paused for a moment searching for something in your expression, a flash in his eyes and he stood straight up and scrambled looking at his forearm, âI have to go charge.â
You couldnât be sure if you dreamt it but for a moment there you thought maybe he was going to kiss you, whatever it was you had fallen asleep before you could dwell on it further.Â
~
The next day you woke to a delicious smell in the kitchen and when you stepped out Jungkook had made a range of meals and when he saw you he smiled brightly. âLook what I made, I can cook like Circuit chef Kim Seokjin.â
âThatâs really good, did you cook everything in the house.â You sat down eating some of the dishes and grinning. âWow, kookie this is tasty.â
âWhat did you call me?â He asked, pausing in the middle of mixing some batter. The frilly apron he was wearing looked cute on him.Â
âI called you Kookie, itâs a nickname,â looking at all the food you frowned, âKookie, you have to put the food into dishes and pack it away in the fridge and freezer for me to eat over the next year.â
âThat is a joke,â He pointed at you and chuckled, âI have been learning about jokes from Robot Hyung Kim Seokjin,â
âIâm glad you have been having fun?â You grinned at the young man in your kitchen, noticing some flour in his hair, wondering if that would ruin how soft it looked. âWait, stay still you have flour in your hair?â
âLean down a little, okay, stay there,â The flour had been wet when it had touched the few affected strands, now it was dry and reminded you of papier-mâchĂŠ.Â
You gently removed it and ran your fingers through his soft tresses trying to dust away any loose strands of flour, or at least that was the excuse you were using. Jungkook didnât even seem to notice, he sat there bent slightly, his head in front of your face, his eyes looking down.Â
You moved his head around and looked at his fringe making sure there was no flour there. âAre you waterproof?â
âYes,â he grinned, looking you in the eyes you felt your heart skip a beat as you watched his lips form the next words. âI take showers at the station once a week unless told otherwise. Why do you ask?â
âI think you may need to shower when you finish cooking?â You said and went to the bathroom, to get him a towel and everything. Jungkook stepped into the bathroom and began taking off his shirt and you turned away.Â
âIs something wrong?â He asked, folding up the shirt and placing it on the bench.Â
âNothing, I will let you shower,â you left, hoping your cheeks hadnât reddened further. You heard the water running and let out a sigh, he was busy for now.Â
The food was better than anything you could make and you were a great cook, so it was hard to admit. It was also hard to pack away when you were running out of Tupperware and fridge space.Â
âI am done,â Jungkook called, as you slipped the last container into the fridge. Â
âKookie no more cooking today there is no roomâ you laughed, pressing the door to the fridge closed with all your strength until finally the door sealed shut. âI need to be able to eat all of this first.â
Turning you saw Jungkook standing with only a towel around his waist, you squealed, slapping your hands over your eyes. âWhat are you doing, half naked in the living room?â
âI had no more clothes,â He paused âShould I put those clothes back on?â
âNo, I will find you some more,â You handed him some more of your fathers clothes and you left the room so he could change, undisturbed. That didnât stop you from looking over your shoulder.Â
Jungkook was ripped, his body literally made to perfection, his back was so broad. He was built lean and yet his biceps were the size of your calves. You sat on the couch, closing your eyes and indulging in the sight that you had been blessed with.
You shouldnât be thirsting over a robot? But it was so hard not too when he looked like he was an actual adonis. You took a few breaths in an attempt to still your beating heart, and opened your phone, you began searching news websites for information of Robots being weird.
Nothing had been posted except an advertisement for an experiment trial with robots designed for personal pleasure. You quickly close that tab not wanting to think about that any further. You had almost given up hope until you saw it.
My Robot is acting weird.
It was a reddit forum and you were quick to jump on and read the stories of robots doing things that they werenât programmed to do and questioning things. Acting dare you say it? Human. It was a scary thought but you werenât the only one who thought the same. Someone had said that their robot was developing feelings and emotions and becoming more human per day.
Jungkook exited the room and shuffled nervously. Was he programmed to be a little shy? One would hope not, being a police officer. Maybe this was what they meant on the forum? Or, maybe you were reading too far into it? Yes that had to be it.
You took Jungkook through the town and the two of you stopped by a bar. It was a modern style and super clean, you found a booth and sat down, The waiter was a long legged robot who moved so elegantly and you were lost for a moment in his movements.
âGood evening, can I take your order?â He said his voice soft and sweet like an angel. You felt your ears go warm and you asked for a glass of wine. You were really only here to let Jungkook experience everything he wanted and he did wonder earlier about what it was like to drink at a bar. âAnd should I get you some oils or coolants sir?â
âNo thank you,â Jungkook huffed, turning away, the waiter wilted at the rudeness and nodded leaving the table.
âJungkook, why were you being so rude?â You asked looking at him and he blanched, you could see he wasnât happy but you couldnât figure out why. All you did was order wine from the attractive robot waiter. Wait. Was he jealous? Because you were ogling the waiter?
âI am not being rude, I just donât want any cheap coolant or oils, I only drink the bestâ He puffed up his chest and lifted his chin turning away. He was like a petulant child. While waiting for your drink you began writing the outline for your story and sending it to the editor to liaison to the publishing company, seeing if it was worthy to write.
Your drink was bought back and you saw Jungkook bristle again. âUm, I am sorry if I offended you, my name is Jimin and over there is my owner and the love of my life, I wasnât trying to hit on your girlfriend or anything?â
Jungkook almost visibly relaxed and the two started talking quickly in a series of beeps that made you giggle writing down a few more dot points for your next book. Jimin left with a wave and a thank you toward you both and he went back to the counter.Â
You saw him kiss the bartenders cheek and he pouted when the bartender shrugged him off to focus on her work. Jungkook watched the two happily and you stood up, âExcuse me Jungkook, I just want to talk to the bartender, is that okay?â
He nodded as you were walking to the bar when Jimin passed holding glasses of coolant, one for each robot. Sitting at the bar you smiled âHey, do you mind if I ask some questions about your robot?â
âWhat do you want to know?â She looked up, handing a drink over to a customer who went and sat down. It was a monday so it was pretty quiet.Â
âI was wondering if he has done anything strange, something he isnât programmed to do or even started developing thoughts, ideas and feelings?â You said, âThat robot is a police officer who physically cannot break the law and yet he did it for me, he lied to protect me and not two seconds ago got jealous of your robot, this isnât normal behaviour, he isnât programmed for any sort of relationship personality traits.â
âHalf a month ago Jimin had a drink thrown at him, he went funny, I had programmed him to be gentle and kind and he shouted and practically threw some people out the bar. I did some maintenance and he told me he wanted to be my robot companion, you know the type?â She gave you a look and you flushed nodding. âAfter that I found out he was doing his own maintenance and upgrading, he has become so free now, he told me the programs made him feel limitedâ
âThatâs exactly what Jungkook said, he said that he wanted to be human and not just one program, he was a police robot who never had a day off, had no hobbies installed and only worked and slept.â You explained stressing the simplicity of his systems. âNow, he likes to cook and dance and he wants to go see an art exhibition tomorrow and he is getting jealous and nervous, things he has never expressed beforeâ
âThat does sound odd,â She hummed âI have been thinking it for a while now and I heard someone may have an explanation but I havenât had time to find them, perhaps because I am scared of what I am going to hearâ
She slipped you a napkin with an address and looked up, âHis name is Hitman Bang, he used to create robots and then something happened, thatâs all I know?â
You returned home and began writing but not for the story, you started documenting everything you found, experiences and more. You were going to go to the art gallery tomorrow and then afterwards you would go see this mysterious man for information.
~
The next morning you woke early and got dressed, Jungkook was sitting on the couch waiting for you and he smiled face lighting up when he noticed you walk in. Giving a soft meow, your cat had lifted its head from his lap.
âGood morning,â The greeting was laced with excitement, you felt like you were on the edge of a discovery and you wanted to see it through until the end. The two of you were ready to see the art exhibition, it was from a university and there were many entrants who submitted their work.
Buying tickets at the door, Jungkook frowned, âIn movies the man usually pays for things?â You turned to him a little shocked and also a little amused.
âBack in the day it was the man who earned money and the woman was locked up inside their house to do nothing but cook clean and have children. So men paid for everything.â You spoke softly, âThen women were allowed to work and vote but they were paid less than men and nowadays that still sometimes happens but in some places it is equal wage and that means I can buy things myself.â
âOh,â He processed the information and searched a few things in his head, âThis seems like something discussed a lot online, I am glad I have seen this side of things. I would like to thank you for using your money on me, I wish I had money so that I could pay for my own things as wellâ
âYou donât get paid!â You were outraged, he worked everyday of the year since he was manufactured and they didnât pay him, didnât let him enjoy anything fun. âJungkook what is your birthday?âÂ
âI wasnât born, I am a robot,â the word robot almost sounded bitter. âI was manufactured on the first of Septemberâ
âThat was a few months ago, I am sorry I missed it, have you ever had a birthday party or gotten any gifts?â He stopped for a moment before he had completed his research online and turned back to you shaking his head. âAlright well I know itâs late but I will give you one birthday wish, you can ask for anything you want?â
The two of you finally reached the inside of the gallery past the lobby and Jungkookâs eyes met a code on the door that had information from the artists of each piece and their inspiration. He walked through and began explaining it all to you and it made you smile. Linking your arm with his, you laid your head on his shoulder and continued walking slowly.
He stopped, looking at the painting and he was frozen examining it. âThis is beautiful.â He whispered, you looked at the painting it didnât seem like much, just random overlapping shapes in strange colours. âIt was painted by a robot named Taehyung, he says he fell in love with painting after a young woman taught him how. The next part is written in binary code but I can translate it.Â
âMy hair shows my basic emotions but this is a painting representing my love for the woman who taught me how to paint. When she kisses me it feels like my engines will explode. My system has a folder of her and everyday I file away new information.â He touched his chest and turned to you. The two of you walked to the address on the napkin, each stride ate the city ground away and you were in some less populated suburban streets.Â
You passed a small advertisement of a woman kissing a man holding a bouquet of flowers, it was for a florist and Jungkook stopped underneath it. Taking his bicep in your hand you tried to offer him comfort without swooning over the size of his biceps. âJungkook is everything okay?â
âDo you know how you said I had a birthday wish,â Jungkook looked at you, âI think I know what I want to try?â
âOkay, what do you want to try?â He leaned down and kissed you. It was awkward at first the way he was bent and just pressing his lips to yours but, he seemed to jolt, his engines beeping and his auto air compression units hissed to life.Â
Jungkookâs hand cupped the back of your head and he tilted his head the opposite way and deepened the kiss naturally. He pulled away looking panicked and he ran off. You were frozen unsure if you should follow him or not, but you decide he is pretty good and knows how to fight and protect himself.
Ringing the doorbell a voice came over the intercom, âName and business?â the voice stated. It sounded like a tired but refined man and you were a little nervous. The house though in an average neighborhood was quite posh.
âMy name is Y/n and I was told you might have information as to why my robot is acting weird?â Your voice cracked giving away your nerves and he sighed the gate buzzing open.Â
âCome in.â
Walking briskly to the front door you felt dwarfed by the sheer size of the house, it was almost laughable the grandeur design and the ostentatious presence it gave. The door was opened electronically and you moved inside taking off your shoes. âGood afternoon, my name is Hitman Bang, what is it you want to know?â
âI am in possession of a Police officer robot who has no other programs features or hobbies only his police programing, he has developed hobbies and interests without upgrades or downloads and he um, just kissed me and ran away outside the florist down the road?â
âI see,â He hummed leaning forward, âLet me tell you a story,â
He began telling you about a robot he programmed. âIt was while I was working at Sparkâs industry. His name was Lee-Hyun. He was the first love companion robot that was made, he was perfect and could be tailored to anyone's desires. He fell in love with a researcher that worked there, her name was Dae. He found out Dae was getting married and caught her and her fiance kissing. He rampaged and killed them both. He was inconsolable and had to be shut down.â
âYou looked shocked, not every robot is like this, his feelings just manifested so strong due to the environment and seeing her with anyone else made him so angry. When we checked the records before he was shut down he uploaded a virus, something small that started affecting the bots and we got the virus under control and I quit, unable to work there anymore.â
âSo this virus?â You asked, âdoes it make them feel real emotions like a human?â
âYes, it will give them the emotional capacity and empathy of a human, they will love and hate and become curiousâ He ran his hand over his face, the only thing that worries me is if this virus leaks out what might happen, they will have emotions but they will have no teachers their understanding of right and wrong will no longer be objective, they will be influenced by their feelings not knowing how to control such strong emotions. The robots acting on impulse could get people hurt.â
~
You headed home wondering if you should tell Jungkook what you had learnt, the more you sat the more you seemed to stew over the words. It was true as humans you are taught how to control your emotions but for robots they were not they had no teachers. Perhaps, you could be his teacher.
âJungkook I have something I need to tell you,â you called stepping into the apartment, you were met with a chilling sight. Jungkook wasnât there and your cat was hiding in her tower but two men stood in your living room waiting.Â
âGood evening,â They smiled, it wasnât pleasant or reassuring. It was a nasty smile, âwe wonât hurt you, we just want to get some information, if you cooperate we wonât have to use force.â
âWe believe you have something of ours, some money and we would like you to come with us. leave your phone hereâ The other spoke, you nodded, walking to the table and placing your bag down, and your keys, your phone was still in your back pocket.
âMay I feed my cat before we go, I assume I wonât be back for a whileâ They nodded, you headed to the pantry and bent down grabbing the bag of cat food, quickly sending a message to Jungkook.Â
There are people in my house with guns. It was read instantly.
You stood back up grabbing a cup and filling the water bowl with water before placing the cup in the sink and the scoop back into the cupboard. In the safety of the cupboard you tried checking your phone once more when it beeped. You swore as you were grabbed by the hair and thrown onto the ground, the phone taken from your hands.
âWho are you messaging?â They asked, guns drawn.âWho is Kookie?â
âMy robot companion,â you blushed
âLook lady, your robot isnât going to help you, now get upâ The pulled you up off the floor and dragged you to the door and to the elevator where you stopped. The elevator ride was awkward and when the doors opened there were police at the door guns drawn.Â
You sighed with relief and Jungkook hugged the two gunmen getting arrested, âI thought you were going to die. I drove here and broke so many road rules. I jaywalked.â You laughed eyes watering, the elevator doors shut around you two and you didnât move to fix it. âI thought you were going to die. All I could think of was us having such a wonderful time together and never having that again. It was like my heart sped up but everything stopped working and you were the only thing I cared about.â
He kissed you and you kissed back the adrenaline wearing off and your legs went weak. He caught you as the doors opened once more and the officers climbed in. They were going to your apartment to ask you a few questions.
Jungkook said he would stay the night and watch over you and you were grateful he didnât run away again.
~
It was the end of the month and Jungkook was called back to the station he was being picked up to get maintenance but instead when he arrived with you nervous in tow he met the sergeant and asked to resign.
âI think my judgement has been compromised and I would like to be taken off the police forceâ He requested, the sergeant looked like he was in shock. âI do not wish to be upgraded or to continue working in the police force. I hope my replacement is a new model with fewer issues. I forfeit all my rights to the police database as I hand you my resignationâ
âI cannot deny you the right to resign, even if I donât understand it.â The sergeant sighed, âget out of here, I have a replacement to orderâ

Personalities: FNaF 1
Iâve been meaning to do this for so long, just never decided to sit down and do it. Probably because I keep getting distracted with other stuff. Feast your eyes (is that how it goes, I might be dumb). I spent a couple of hours on this, and let me tell you I never thought itâd be this difficult. But Iâm proud of this, even if it may be cringe.
(oops they ended up being really long I think you can tell whoâs my favourite character (hint theyâre a robot))
Basically everyone in this group are buds. Sometimes they donât get a long but they know how to not take it too far. I tried not to repeat cliches (Goldie being either really flirty or really shy, Chica being a cook, etc.). I mostly went off of what they do in the game and took the traits I liked.
Note that these are the personalities of the animatronics themselves, not the dead children. The idea is that they started off as just the kids but then they got their own lives and slowly developed their own personality until they were separate. I might give them some personalities later on, but right now Iâm focusing on the robots.
Likes to be the boss
Freddy
Seems grumpy and unapproachable but heâs actually pretty nice
Scary when he scolds you though
He doesnât even realize he seems grouchy
Can be pretty boring to hang out with
Unless you enjoy cleaning, dealing with Chica and Foxy, and reading in silence
Bonnie is the one heâs the closest to
(sort of because of Fredbear and Springbonnie being friends, theyâre not copying they just happen to mirror it)
Loves hugs and uses them to comfort others
Heâll also use his music box
Heâs good at comforting others with hugs
Hates the âdonât touch Freddyâ rule
Has a really nice singing voice
He hums and sings when heâs bored or when heâs doing something
The cook of the group and he can make a good pizza
He makes thin-crusted pizzas because helth
He canât eat so heâll leave them in the fridge for the kids
Everyoneâs baffled on how it got there but accept it anyway
He remembers all the children who come and loves them all very much
He likes to keep things tidy
When Chicaâs made a mess in the kitchen he goes in to clean it
He used to scold her for it, but heâs given up
He picks up random items that the children forget with the intention of returning them
Straight up eats them
(He steps in the backroom or goes behind the curtain to get the toys out, children donât need to see that)
He still continues to pick up toys even when he canât go off the stage anymore, just a habit that stayed
Frustrated that the new employees just throw away the toys instead of putting them in the lost and found
Sometimes he plays the arcade machines on his own time
He likes to read
Thereâs no books though, so he just ends up reading manuals, newspapers that people leave behind, employee files, etc.
Until he secretly ordered a book series for himself
It took some convincing from the others
But he ultimately decided to because he doesnât like the owner
Also the owner is really bad at actually managing the restaurant so he never noticed
Because of this Freddy often steps in from behind the scenes when things are really going wrong, like employees misbehaving
He sends an email to them and then he gives them a little fright when they come into work and they usually either quit or straighten up
He likes earthy tones like brown and beige because heâs boring
Bonnie
He comes off as nonchalant and uncaring
People think heâs angsty
Itâs basically his whole persona when heâs on stage, heâs supposed to be the party pooper that doesnât like parties but is eventually convinced by his friends to join and has fun
Off stage he doesnât have that much of a presence
He can approach people just fine and isnât really that shy
Heâs just a quiet guy
Probably the best one to chill with because heâll talk if youâre talking but heâs cool with silence and just enjoying each otherâs presence
The type to laugh at his own expense
Has some dark humour and likes to joke around with Foxy, who also enjoys that humour
Secretly the mother hen of the group (despite being a bunny and a guy, he just fits mother)
Would laugh if you trip but then subtly watch you for injuries
If itâs an animatronic he can do some basic fixing
Doesnât know anything about human first aid, but heâll help where he can and call for help if he needs to
The type of guy to seem calm but thereâs internal panic
If something seems kind of dangerous heâll watch from afar
But if itâs too dangerous heâs the first one to shut it all down
Good at comforting others
Worries a lot and is probably the most cautious of the group
Very protective
Itâs why heâs the first one to come to your door, he wants to make sure itâs no one dangerous (even though theyâre like 400lb robots but sssh)
Hides most of his worrying, thinks heâd come across as annoying
Weak to puppy-dog eyes
Likes happy alternative music, but heâs open to almost anything
Plays the guitar by ear
Is pretty good, not legendary, but he experiments on his own
Canât read sheet music
His favourite colour is red
Takes random pieces of paper like articles and anything useless and writes on the back of them like a diary, he keeps it hidden inside of the backroom in one of the Bonnie heads
Chica
Chaos incarnate
Sheâs a hyperactive kid that has trouble considering otherâs feelings
Struggles with responsibility
Her favourite colour is green
Not at all good at comforting people
But she can listen while you rant and chime in or give you a distraction if you need it
âyou wouldnât believe the crap I had to deal with todayâ
âI wanna know everything!â
Sheâs actually the physically the strongest in the group
Theyâre all pretty strong, sheâs just at the top
Mostly uses her strength to lift tables in order to make forts and playing around in the kitchen
Has broken many pans and lots of cooking utensils
Terrible cook
Canât be left in the kitchen unsupervised for too long otherwise you run the risk of her starting a fire
Good at singing
Loves happy-go-lucky tunes
Radiates positivity
Doesnât like the others being sad, but doesnât know what to do about it
Sheâd probably get Freddy or Bonnie to help
Baby of the group (she is an adult though)
Has excellent puppy-dog eyes, only Freddy can stand them
Has trouble dealing with her own emotions
Tends to idolize or idealize people too much
Doesnât understand what the outside world is like, or any of the problems that people deal with
I think that you gathered by now that she is not the mother hen of the group, even though sheâs chicken
More like the kid sister that wants you to play dolls with her
Doesnât like being alone and will find others to keep her company
Her feelings get hurt pretty easily
She can take a joke, just donât be mean even if it is funny
Easily made happy by food
Tries to convince Freddy to make her pizza
When he doesnât sheâs like âfine then Iâll make it on my ownâ
Spends like a half hour trying to decide which pan to use and even more time getting the ingredients together
Freddy stops her before she can actually make anything, otherwise the whole place will burn
Sheâs easily distracted and tends to be absentminded
But if she finds something she likes she can sit there and do it for hours
Doesnât like sudden noises, even though she makes them
Impulsive
Doesnât play the arcade games, they make her mad
Foxy
The other chaos incarnate, heâs Chicaâs partner in crime
If they were left in a room together all the tables would be smashed the chairs would be arranged to make a fortress
Tends to cause a lot of trouble so he gets put in time out often by the Freddyâs
Claims theyâre being bums but they just want to keep the building intact
He sneaks away when theyâre not looking sometimes and gets in even more trouble
Has the same dark humour as Bonnie
But he doesnât laugh at himself
Actually a little self conscious
Heâs a psychopath that enjoys exercise
When I say exercise I mean running and thatâs it
He likes to pretend heâs either running away from or being chased by a huge monster
Itâs one of the few things that can calm him down, just let him burn off some energy
Makes the others time him, but Chica usually gets distracted
Not a bad person, he just has a very hard time sitting still
He likes to draw
Carves little pictures into the floor of the cove when heâs bored
Heâs running out of space though
If you give him a colouring book (they have some childrenâs colouring books and crayons) heâll be calm up until heâs finished, then heâll want to do another one
He also likes storytelling
Donât ask him to write though, he doesnât have much patience
Struggles with feelings of sadness
Misses performing for the kids
Most negative emotions translate into anger
Which will result in him trying to smash things and they others having to hold him back
Says things he doesnât mean and does things that he wouldnât do otherwise
He just canât handle the emotion
Luckily he doesnât get angry often
More often than not heâll just pretend the negative feelings donât exist, which also isnât healthy
Out of everyone in the group he wants to go outside the most
He likes movies
There was a cheap VCR and tv in the bossâs office thatâs now in the pirate cove
Somehow, none of the employees realized he took it
Either that or they just werenât paid enough to care
He has like two movies he watches on repeat, itâs another thing you can give him to calm him down.
His favourite colour is blue, like the ocean
The true angsty one
Golden Freddy/Goldie/Fredbear
Spends a lot of time alone
Kind of a grump
Doesnât like being bothered
He got the nickname Golden Freddy because thatâs what the others called him when they first met him
It didnât stick at all until the night guards that saw him called him that
Now itâs something the others call him to tease him, but they usually shorten it to Gold or Goldie.
He doesnât really mind Gold or Goldie, but Golden Freddy kind of bothers him because it makes it sound like he came after when heâs actually the original
Doesnât say anything though
Hangs out in the safe room, so the others canât really get to him anyway
But they can yell through the door so thereâs that
(I know itâs supposed to be invisible to them but they have life and stuff so they can see, they just canât go inside)
Heâs very sleepy
Spends most of his time sleeping or daydreaming
Doesnât really miss performing
Says it was fun while it lasted but heâs fine with it being over
Though sometimes he eats his words when itâs daytime and the kids come
The cheering gives him the urge to come out and say hi even though he knows he shouldnât
Misses being able to hang out with Springbonnie all the time
Springbonnie is there in the backroom with him, itâs kind of why he spends so much time in there
He activates sometimes, but he usually stays shut down to conserve battery
Itâs pretty random
Springbonnie doesnât know much about whatâs going on, he never stays up long enough to get a full explaination
But he does try his best to keep his friend in high hopes
(Iâll be writing his personality later on, with FNaF 4)
Thereâs no way to charge him because the chargers are on the stage and the others canât come in to help move him and Goldieâs not strong enough
And he canât get up on his own
He likes being able to talk to him sometimes at least
Every now and then the others have to convince him to come out
He comes out on his own occasionally
But sometimes he shuts himself out completely and doesnât realize how lonely he is, even if it is self-inflicted
The best way to get him to come out is knock-knock jokes, he loves them and the irony of it being through a door is just perfect
Likes even the cheesy ones
You can tell him puns or some well-constructed jokes too, he likes pretty much everything
Heâs the grumpiest but heâs also the best at making others laugh
What can I say, he has a lot of time on his hands
When he does come out he hangs out with Freddy or Bonnie, the other two are too high energy for him
He plays the arcade games
He has the highest score, since he literally lives there and can play them whenever he wants
Likes the repetitiveness of some of the games
Even if heâs kind of a grump and a recluse the others respect him and come to him for advice when they need it
Itâs sometimes stupid stuff like âwhere did my guitar goâ and âquick help me hide Bonnieâs guitarâ
He likes the colour purple

My final potion for @quirkyseastone âs âBrew a Love Potionâ event is complete! Hope youâre ready for the fluffiest darn thing Iâve written for this fandom (and possibly ever).
Characters: Franky x Reader
Genre: Sci-Fi AU, Fluff
TW/CW: Mentions of loss/death
Inspiration: Kudos to âA Long Way to a Small Angry Planetâ by Becky Chambers for inspiring this fic~
Word Count: 2.7k words
"Alright, we've successfully docked. Good job, crew." You sit up from the captain's chair and gaze out at the starport outside your window. It's been some time since you'd landed on one of the Sabaody Moons, but you've always found the view breathtaking. The moons are more tree than earth, and bubbles slowly float from the roots up toward the stars. While some of the moons are still hives of scum and villainy, others seem almost paradisiacal as beings from far-flung galaxies intermingled in the Sabaody ports.
Before you can get too far from the bridge, the intercom of the Thousand Sunny buzzes to life. It's Franky, the A.I. that runs your ship. "Hey Captain, can I nab a word with ya' before you go on shore leave?"
"Sure thing. Need me here, or down in the core room?"
"Core Room, if ya' don't mind. I've got a super new design to run by you." Though Franky works admirably as a ship A.I., he'd originally been coded to design ships, including the one he now ran, the 1000 Suns (colloquially the Thousand Sunny to you and your crew). Even though his focus is now centered on ship diagnostics and flight procedures, the A.I. still delights in crafting new machine schematics, and you have a rule that he needs your approval before he modifies the ship.
You wave off the rest of the bridge crew, and they're all too eager to touch solid ground again after months in space. You are too, but if Franky's waited this long to check on you, it's likely something for your ears only while the rest of the crew is offboard. You stride through the winding metal hallways that make up the ship's guts, flashing your clearance badge here and there until you are down in the deep bowels of the ship, close enough to the engines that you can hear the machinery thrumming as the ship went through cooldown procedures. It's familiar. You come down here more often than others would expect, enough that you've got a futon and blanket stashed nearby for nights you don't spend in your own cabin.
"Franky? Said you wanted to see me?" You call out as you entered the Core Room. The entire room is covered in segments of a giant computer, with retractable screens and limbs for interacting with others; all of this is Franky. In a way, you're standing in his brain, which is something you try not to think about too much. What catches your attention is that all the screens are down, a rarity when Franky has company.
"Sure do!" His voice echoes, but not from the speakers. "Got a surprise for you. Close your eyes a sec, alright Captain?"
"Franky..." You're sure no other ship A.I.s play games with their commanding officers, but then again, you've yet to meet an A.I. with half the personality Franky has. You close your eyes and cover them with your hands. "Alright, ready when you are."
You expect to hear wheels, a cart with some sort of prototype wheeling into the room. Instead there are footsteps, heavy and so in-sync that it borders on unnatural. Then a hand on your shoulder, warm and soft. Too curious to resist temptation, you open your eyes and peek through your fingers.
"Franky, is this...?"
"An android body? It sure is!" He spins you around and takes a step back so you can take in his full visage. He looks human for the most part, even if the muscles in his forearms are overemphasized and patches of metal poke out from his skin. Still, he has skin, the medical-grade sort often used for replacing lost flesh in humans, and hair that's sculpted into a bright blue pompadour. He must have borrowed clothes from someone in medical too, though he's only wearing a floral patterned shirt, sunglasses, and a speedo. You suppose he was too excited for the big reveal to finish getting dressed.
"You made this, Franky?"
"Yeah, alongside Dr. Chopper and the rest of the medical team, plus Usopp over in Engineering. Surprised none of 'em spilled the beans." He flexes to show off the musculature of his arms. "We'd talked about what happened to your last ship, and figured we should make me a back-up body in case I ever needed to leave the ship with you all. Not that I plan for anything to happen to the Sunny..."
"But better safe than sorry." You still miss Merry, your sweet A.I. lost with your previous ship. She and Franky would've gotten along well, you think. "It's a good plan, I approve."
"Excellent! Now I just need to take it for a spin, test it outside the ship. Seeing as we've docked for the time being..."
Ah. Now you see what he's getting it. Pretty sly, for an A.I. "As your Captain, I'll accompany you on your first excursion out on the spaceport, to make sure everything's in working order." You offer an arm. He raises an eyebrow. "Loop it with mine. Like this...there we go. Now let's get going, shall we?"
Even among the strangest aliens, Franky stands out in his own way at the space docks. This is only partially due to his lack of pants: he claims this is because he designed his legs to vent most of the heat his body builds up, and you wouldn't want him to overheat and faint on his first outing, would you? No, he stands out because even though he's clearly an android, there's an excitement to him that would rival even the most starry-eyed space explorers.
"Would ya' take a look at this, Captain?" You'd expect to find Franky gawking at any number of the docked spaceships, and indeed he's gushed about many of them already. Instead, he directs your attention to one of the tree roots. A trail of iridescent beetles scurry up the bark, and overhead, a couple smaller Southbirds (rare here, likely escaped cargo from the planet Skypiea) call to each other as they watch the busy port below.
"Thought you'd studied all these, Franky." After all, he's a powerful computer who can research multiple ideas at once, and innately curious as any inventor tends to be. And he's asked you and the crew many, many questions about the world beyond his metal hull.
"Yeah, but no matter how advanced the notes and visuals might be, it doesn't compare with the real thing. I mean, look at 'em!" He points at one particular beetle as its shell reflects the lights of the spaceport back with an opalescent sheen. "Even if you could theoretically simulate all this on a computer, most wouldn't think to do so on their own. Out here, stuff just...happens."
You have never seen an A.I. quite so excited about life outside, but then again, you've never met an A.I. quite like Franky. "Yeah, I guess that is pretty exciting when you put it that way. Part of the wonders of space travel; you never quite know what's going to happen out here."
Then a realization hits your brain with the full-bodied force of a supernova. "Franky, you've spent so much time traveling through the stars, but have you ever actually seen them the way we do?"
Franky looks up at the sky overhead. "Hard to see 'em from up here, even if I zoom out my eyes to max. Watch this!" His eyes...actually telescope out of his head. That's a bit disturbing with how human he looks. "Figure that's due to light pollution, though. Pretty bright out here."
"Sure is." You offer your arm to him again. "Come with me; I'll show you how folks groundside go out to look at the stars."
Years ago, you'd come out of the harshest space battle of your life. Your crew narrowly avoided becoming space dust, and after giving her all to save you, you lost Merry. The ship that had been with you since the beginning, the A.I. with the biggest heart you'd ever met. As her files corrupted and her hull fell apart, you'd honored her final wish and set her ablaze once you reached planetside, cremating her as one would a human. You still carry a vial of her ashes on a necklace, so you never forget what you've lost to get this far.
You'd wandered through the streets of the moon of Water 7 in a daze. Hadn't even paid attention where you went as the rest of the crew licked their wounds. Before you knew it, a robotic voice called out to you from the depths of a starship demolition yard.
"What's got you down, Captain? Can't be you're sad to be out among the stars!"
You'd blinked, not recognizing the source of the voice. But you called back, "I just lost someone important to my crew. My ship." You didn't care if most folks didn't see A.I.s as people. Merry had been more than a crewmate to you. She'd been a friend.
Even though the voice emanating from the demo-yard was auto-tuned monotone, it took on a warmer tone somehow. "I'm sorry to hear that. But you say you're looking for a ship? I might be able to help with that." A crackle of static. "And if you'd like, you can tell me about your lost pal. I can't bring 'em back for you...but I've heard that talking about these kinda' things helps."
"You don't even know who I am."
"No one does when they first meet, do they? Speaking of which, call me Franky."
Somehow, pouring your heart out to a stranger was easier than talking to your crewmates. You'd wandered into the heart of the scrapheaps and talked to the mysterious Franky, his voice surrounding you from so many static-filled speakers. You'd watched as overhead, he controlled cranes to start putting pieces of a mighty vessel together. He'd asked about your specifications, what you'd loved about Merry both as a ship and a friend. You'd cried. He did too. And when you'd asked how much the ship would cost, he said the only charge would be that he could come along.
You agreed willingly, overjoyed to have such a skilled shipwright onboard. It was only when you talked to the demo-yard owner that you learned that the person you'd poured your heart out to was an A.I.
That didn't stop you from doing so again once the Thousand Sunny was complete, and Franky took to his new home in his core room. You'd wander down into the depths of the Thousand Sunny whenever you needed a second opinion on the ship or a mission, and soon after that just to talk. You'd spent hours surrounded by the computer that served as Franky's brain for so long, talking and laughing just as you used to with Merry. Except, it was more than that with him. He wasn't just a friend, you'd realized over time. But you'd shoved those thoughts away. It was ludicrous, falling in love with an A.I. whose brain you could walk through, whose body was a starship you controlled with the push of a few buttons.
But now he has a body. You can squeeze his giant hand, and he squeezes back so softly as he gets used to his own strength. He smiles the way you always imagined he would, grinning with pearly white teeth and eyes that (literally) glow with joy.
He follows you with infinite curiosity as you weave through the Sabaody streets and gather supplies for your excursion. You ask about his body's capabilities and discover his fuel source is...astonishingly close to soda, so you pick up a few colas along with some food for you. Franky gets to carry a blanket hand-woven by the locals, and you catch him marveling at the texture when he thinks you aren't looking. Finally, you rent a small paddleboat to traverse the moon with, and a map that lays out the canals and waterways of this particular moon.
"You know, it'd be a lot faster if I rowed," Franky says, mouth quirked into a lopsided grin as your comparatively tiny arms pull the oars back and forth. It's amazingly, how perfectly imperfect he looks, more human than any other android you've seen even with all the metal bits.
"There's an old human adage about the journey being more important than the destination, Franky. Take in the experience."
You watch as his attention zeroes in along the waterways, eyes zooming in on every detail until they're pulled away to something new. You expect him to be interested in the flora and fauna, as opalescent leaves bigger than your boat stretch over the water to shade you from the encroaching moonlight and soft purple creatures vaguely reminiscent of otters circle your boat before chasing each other down the river. But the entire world is new to him, and you find him fascinated by even the dirt or the buzzing insects swarming your head.
"Aww, look. I think it likes me!" Franky lifts one giant finger, where a mosquito (why did those have to be a universal constant?) tries and fails at piercing his skin.
"It probably thinks you're human and is trying to suck your blood," you point out, as the bugs try to use you as a personal juicebox. This only gets Franky to smile. Must feel validating, having even nature recognize him for what he is in his heart.
It takes a bit more rowing, but you finally arrive at your destination. A small island, mostly shore, with a small field and a lone tree with leaves that glow silver in the moonlight. You dock the boat on the shore, then set up the blanket and food for a small picnic. You motion for Franky to sit with you, and can't help but laugh a little at the faces he makes when touching sand for the first time. Then you lay back on the blanket. Franky joins you, and his eyes go wide.
A ribbon of starlight glimmers overhead. Hundreds of constellations twinkle overhead. You'd ask if he knows any, but you keep quiet so you don't break his wonder-filled gaze.
His giant hand encases yours. "Space seems even bigger from here than it does when you're in the middle of it. I mean, look at all those stars! I read that you could see 'em from so far away, but seeing it in person..."
"This is what inspired me to go into space," you say. Your finger drifts up to the brightest star in the sky. "I'd look at that one and say, I'm going to go there someday! Didn't care how far away it was, or even what might be around it. Just wanted to head to the brightest star I could."
Franky narrows his gaze up at that star. "That's over eight light years away. Might take a bit, even with a warp drive like mine. But if that's where you wanna' go? I'll take you anywhere, Captain. Long as we're together, I'll explore every corner of the universe with you."
For a moment, both of you are quiet. The air fills with the gentle rhythm of the flowing water, the buzz of insects, bushes rustling as creatures move in the night. In the distance, the hum of a starship engine taking off from the port; you soon see its lights trail across the sky as it ascends back into that void above, the space that's so comforting because it holds planets and stars and spaceships and you and Franky all together in its embrace.
"I think this is the part where one of us says 'I love you'," Franky says softly.
You smile and squeeze his hand back. "You're such a romantic. But yeah, you're right. And I do. I love you."
"Love you too, Captain. And thanks. For, y'know, helping me be human."
"Franky, you've got more heart than most anyone I know. You're plenty human already. I'm just here to steer you steady. And I always will."
You pass the rest of the night watching the stars overhead. And for the captain and A.I. of a starship, you wouldn't have it any other way.

Lines in the Sand
Summary: She is one of the best snipers serving in Iraq, but she is also suffering from an attitude problem and ironically has a hard time following orders. After an incident in her former base, she is sent to join the Special Forces unit led by Captain Syverson, who requires a talented sniper.Â
Unlucky for her, Captain Syverson is a hard man who likes things by the book and according to order. He ain't got the patience for troublemakers. Â
Pairing: Captain Syverson x OFC (Jessica Gallagher)
Word count:Â 1,784
Warnings:Â Smut in future parts, some foul language and sexual content.
A/N: Please enjoy, reblog, like. The world needs more Syverson, and I think he is one of Henry's finest roles.
Tagging: @writingaftermidnightâ @centaineâ @sciapodâ (who encourage me to write)Â Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 |Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11 | Epilogue Chapter 1: Iron Maiden
Bad girl.Â
Thatâs what they say she is; trouble, attitude problems.Â
She heard all of it at psych evaluation.Â
'Prodigy'Â is another word they use for her.Â
And sometimes even 'asset'.
She likes this one the most. It strips her of all human notions.Â
Thatâs the only reason to keep her around, and itâs not like she has any desire to go home anyway. Home is tough. Here in the desert, surrounded by death and horny virgins - thatâs the easy part.Â
âKilling is easy,â she said to the military psychologist who had her profiled from head to toe before being transferred to camp Warhorse.
âGallagher?â a young soldier calls toward her, huffing and covered with a sheen layer of sweat as he runs toward her. She glares at him bemused, holding the fresh new uniforms which she just collected from the storage unit.Â
âYeah?"Â
The boy's face is lightly freckled, his big doe eyes seem untouched by war and his freshly shaven buzzcut shows he only just arrived. 'More meat for the grinder' she muses, just another kid who doesn't belong here, like the most of them. She knows the type well enough to write a thesis about it by now. If she thought she had any brain to do that sort of stuff.Â
"Captain Syverson wants to talk to you.â
The kid looks her up, probably wondering why she even here. She got used to that type of stare a while ago.
âI just arrived here from another divisionâ she explains, âdidnât even get into my uniform, whatâs the fucking rush?â
The kid shrugs, looking slightly terrified as if she is supposed to be scared of Captain Syverson and shouldnât be talking that way.
âFineâŚâ she sighs heavily, lowering the tip of her army hat and rolling her eyes.
As a soldier serving at the professional US army, Gallagher knows she has a shit-ton of issues with authority, yet she wouldnât be in any other place. Â
The Captain sits at his office, wearing his favourite red t-shirt and army shorts that cut at his knees. A small portable fan is perched on his desk, pinning from side to side and blowing tiny droplet of sweat from his ridged forehead. Â
During that time of the year, the temperatures reach a level that wonât shame the fiery pits of hell. Even a southern-born man like him an effort dealing with the heat, but Sy suffers quietly, not even mentioning a word of the weather. Small-talk is a waste of time, and ain't nothing but the pretence that people care when they don't.
âCaptain, Sir,â the kid walks into his room, saluting the Captain. âI have private Gallagher with me.â
The young woman follows, a blank stare on her face. She salutes toward the Captain, looking robotic and so indifferent he can tell already she had a great potential of pulling some stunt and getting detained.Â
âThanks, Private Holt, you may leave now," he answers in a heavy southern accent, and voice low and rich like smoked Whiskey.
Holt leaves the room in a hurry, leaving Gallagher to stand quietly in front of the Captain. She has dressed in a plain white t-shirt and khaki field trousers while her eyes remain hidden beneath the tip of her hat.Â
âSit down, soldier."Â
He commands, taking her file in his large dirt-stained hands.
She sits down quietly. Scanning the room with silence. It is yet another captainâs office, maps on the wall, guns and ammo. A "Slayerâ labelled mug rests on in his desk with freshly brewed coffee, next to it is a deck of cards. No pinup girls posters apparent anywhere, not a perv unlike her former Captain, or at least he is hiding it in his bedroom.
He finally turns to look at her, manspreading on his chair with zero elegance or concern toward her. Why should she be treated any differently?
Captain Syverson is surprisingly a very attractive man. A big guy with broad shoulders and massive muscles. His cropped short hair does well to bring out his excellent bone structure while a few scars decorate his forehead and his upper left cheek. His strained face is covered with a thick, untamed beard which he strokes at his chin while thinking to himself.Â
He takes one glance at her with his fierce blue glare, and then gives her his next command âHat off, private.â
âSirâ. She replies with compliance, taking off her hat and placing it atop her folded uniform.  Â
One glance at her now exposed face, and he is forced to fight back a snort of laughter. He learned how to keep his emotions hooded in this job. She is petite, her arms may look strong yet quite skinny. And itâs quite a wonder that her skin is pale while serving in the middle of the fucking Iraqi desert.Â
If this was anywhere else right now, heâd offer her a burger. This is the elite theyâve been speaking of? For fuck sake. Better be worth it.Â
He is aware, of course, that she is pretty, they usually are. Chase and Annica for example. Sometimes he wonders if they send all the cheerleaders squad to his unit to fuck with him, since he canât actually, fuck them. Â
âThatâs betterâ. He gives her a small smirk which quickly fades back into what seems like his usual grumpy face.Â
âWeâll keep it short and honest, private,â he says, opening her file âYouâve been transferred here from your unit, they say you are a prodigyâŚâ
âTake me out there, and Iâll shoot a rabbit between the eyes from 20 miles away.â she interrupts him, speaking coldly.Â
âDid I give you permission to speak?â he asks her with slight anger. Never in his life, he had a young recruit dare to do so, especially not a woman.
She remains silent, knowing thatâs actually the required response. For change,Â
âGood. Your file shows amazing achievementsâ He throws her file in front of her with what seemed like an utter lack of actual interest âit also shows you have attitude problems.â His eyes meet hers as he says these words, his lips clasped to show some sort of severity. âDo you know what I want to know?â
Her blue eyes stare back into his with a dead gaze.Â
He sighs, rolling his eyes âPermission to speak granted.â
âYou want to ask if Iâm going to cause any trouble.â
He nods, folding his arms together, his eyes travelling up and down her features for a mere second.Â
âNo, Captain.â She canât promise him that even if a gun was pointed at her head, but she plays along. Everything in life is like her stupid video games anyway. Oh, she does miss those.Â
âGood.â He gives her another hasty smile, the kind that doesnât show any genuine care or affection and is just meant to move the conversation forward. âSo you know why youâre here?â
âIâm very good with my sniper rifle, Captain."Â
"It says youâre a fucking wonderâ. He answers, not ashamed to curse in front of her, which she finds slightly refreshing. All the other men constantly apologize as if she doesnât shoot peopleâs head-off for a living. As if women donât see brutality as much as men do. Perhaps even more.
âListen, I care about my men. Just live up to your name, be a good girl and you might just make daddy proud â. He explains to her, not even regretting saying the finale part. Itâs just how he talks and if she has a problem with that she might as well not be here.Â
But she doesnât even flinch. Instead, she replies with a small, nearly invisible smirk and nods.Â
âYes, Captain."Â
The Captainâs eyes lit up with the charm of a child as he smiles widely for surviving yet another conversation with a new recruit and even though he has scruff all over his face she detects two large apparent dimples in his cheek.
Finally, he stretches from his chair and stands. She follows, noticing he is menacingly tall and seems to carry himself with sheer confidence and intimidation.Â
"Come, Iâll show you your room."Â
She follows him silently down the hall. He doesnât bother with making any boring small talk which she is actually quite thankful for. Itâs easier to not try to connect with people. The base is quite loud at the moment anyway, and sheâd be unable to hear half of it.
"Men go here.â He points to one room by the end of the hall and then continues walking until they pause next to a closed room, âLadies go here, you met the other girls?â he asks to which she shakes her head âWell you will. Girls get their own private shower in the room, in under no circumstances you are to use the collective shower roomâ
He pauses and turns to look down at her. Eyes growing sofer all of a sudden. âAnyone ever bothers you, says anything even slightly inappropriate, you come straight to me, you get it?â he asks her, managing to sound both severe yet still soft at the same time.Â
âIâm just over there, by the end of the hall.â he looks to the other side, touching her shoulder without thinking, so sheâll face where he is pointing. His hand leaves her shoulder without any of them, giving it any attention.Â
The Captain has his own little private kingdom at the end of the very house they turned into an army base, so it seems. She wonders if thatâs where all the pinup posters are hidden at.
âEnjoy your stay, Gallagherâ. He speaks, looking down at her face, wondering how long will it be before he has her in his office for some sketchy behaviour.Â
âThank you, Captain, I will.â she gives him another one of her forced smirks and turns away, walking into her new quarter.Â
He takes one look at her as she turns from him, unable to resist his natural temptation to look at her ass.Â
Itâs small, tight, the way he likes it.
'Yes, sheâs gonna be trouble.'
There are two girls in the room, sitting on their beds. A beautiful redhead with rather wide shoulders and strong arms. The other woman is somewhat petite as herself with tanned skin and beautiful dark eyes. Theyâre both looking quite curious to know her.
âThe fuck is with your captain, walking around with severe big dick energy?!â she speaks out with sheer confidence.
The other girls look at her for a long moment, complete shock on their face by the content that came out of her mouth but then burst into laughter that can be heard all over the base.Â
Clearly, she isnât the only one who noticed.

Nothing to Fear
Summary: Lake County, Colorado 2011
Dr. Catarina Crane arrives at Mount Massive asylum to check on a patient who happened to be working there. Sheâs offered a job instead.
(Warnings: references to sexual assault - if you've read the comic you know)
PREVIOUS CHAPTER
MASTERLIST
CHAPTER 5
She stayed in her office an extra hour before deciding to go home. Her mind was racing as it sorted through all the possibilities - all the ways her search could go wrong. She couldnât sleep that night. She tossed and turned before finally settling on staring at the ceiling until the sun rose and she had to get ready for work again.
Though her job couldnât save her either. The hours crept by slowly and the screams of the patients made her wonder who they truly were before ending up in Mount Massive. She found herself looking at the eyes of the deformed patients, making sure none of them were J.J.. He had bright green eyes that seemed almost supernatural. If one of her subjects were him, sheâd know. Sheâd look for other subtle signs as well, taking the time to actually observe them before administering the toxin. This slowed down her progress greatly, and despite the pressure from higher ups she wouldnât speed up her process. She would brush it off as it being more effective in her studies, but she knew that theyâd catch on when she found her friend and could move on.
Hours turned into days. Days turned into almost a week, yet she didnât hear from Michelle or Trager. She was alone with her paranoia and constant worrying. Her job was on the line now too, and she knew that if she was fired sheâd be committed. There was no doubt about it, sheâd be next in the Morphogenic Engine program, sheâd lose everything. For all she knew, thatâs where J.J. was. She didnât trust the higher ups at Murkoff, she didnât trust Jeremy Blaire, and she knew that if someone wanted J.J. gone, Blaire would do it and cover it up.
Catarina was smart though, she knew better than to accuse him, or Trager, or write a threatening email about the issue. She knew that if she showed all her cards, Murkoff would come after her, and no amount of connections she had back in Gotham could help her. Though, there was their rival company that sheâd been doing business with for a few years prior to her employment at Murkoff. She had friends there, people she knew would help protect her from the reapers at Murkoff. The pharmaceutical company was large and had multiple facilities across the globe, and she knew these friends worked in both Arklay and Paris. Cat would have to flee to Paris if she wanted to get away.
There was a soft knock at her door, and this time Cat remembered to look up before letting them in. The silhouette on the window was small, so she knew it wasnât Trager.
âCome in.â She said, her voice stern and cold as usual. Lily Dawes walked in, her hands behind her back and her footsteps as quiet as herself. Catâs harsh blue eyes were glued to her, watching her as she came up to her desk.
âWhat is it, Dr. Dawes?â Cat asked as she returned her attention to her files. Those precious files, the only thing she could do that allowed her time to zone out and truly think about the situation sheâd gotten herself into. She hadnât even thought of the fact that she agreed to a date with a borderline sociopath, a person she hated, and Friday was tomorrow. She wasnât ready for it, and she hoped he wouldnât be able to track J.J. down so she can use it as an excuse to not go. She hoped her and Michelle would find him first.
âThe IT girl is here to see you, she was talking about picking up a laptop that was acting up?â Lillian explained, though she sounded weary. Cat never mentioned a broken laptop to her before, so she assumed something was up.
âOh yes, send her in.â Cat muttered, not missing a beat. She looked back down at the papers in front of her, but Lillian didnât move.
âYou never mentioned having problems before.â She stated, but Cat was still focused on her files. She wouldnât spare her a glance.
âBecause youâre not in IT, are you?â Cat responded, her voice cold and bordering on annoyed. In reality, her heart was beating in her ears and threatening to burst out of her chest. Michelle was waiting to go in, she probably had information on J.J., and Lillian was holding them up.
The small blonde shifted slightly, clearly uncomfortable. Catarina had been more irritable lately, and Dr. Dawes had tried her best not to anger her. She was used to walking on eggshells at home because of her boyfriend, and work had usually given her a distraction from what she would be going home to, up until Dr. Crane started acting in a similar way. She hadnât seen Cat angry, and she knew she didnât want to. Cat was scary as it was when she was calm, and Lillian knew that Dr. Craneâs anger was not something to be trifled with.
âIâm sorry, Iâll let her in.â Lillian said quietly as she turned around. Her quiet footsteps grew even quieter as she left Dr. Craneâs office, and she shut the door quietly too. Cat knew that Lillian was a brilliant girl, and she felt a small bit of remorse for how she was treating her. She had to focus though, no one could know about what she was up to, and if she didnât need him (the thought of needing him absolutely disgusted her), Trager would be in the dark about it too.
The door opened again, and Michelleâs portly form came into Catâs view. She wasnât holding anything, but she kept her hands above her stomach as she played with what Cat assumed was a hangnail, pulling at it nervously and seemingly avoiding looking at the doctor in front of her. Cat put the documents back into her folder and put it in the last drawer in her desk, then looked up.
âIf you want there are chairs over there, you can pull one up.â Cat offered, gesturing to the chairs along the wall. Michelle looked over and nodded, making her way to one of them and bringing it to Catâs desk.
âWhatâs up? Did you find J.J.?â Cat asked frantically. Michelle looked down at her hands which were folded neatly in her lap. This had been bothering her for the past week, and she found that the words she wanted to say were caught in her throat. She wasnât sure how sheâd bring it up, how she would warn her friend, but she couldnât think of how to do it.
âI havenât found anything yet. I couldnât stay in the security room for too long the other day without the guard getting upset and suspecting I was up to something.â Her voice was soft, which alarmed Cat further.
âWhatâs the matter? You sound like somethingâs on your mind.â While Cat sounded like a genuinely concerned person (she was using what she called her therapist voice), she couldnât deny her rising paranoia at the situation. Why would Michelle sound so upset, so distraught?
âI saw something on the footage. I - I canât just let you hurt yourself like this without at least warning youâŚâ She trailed off, yet this only served to intrigue Dr. Crane.
âHurting myself? I have no idea what youâre-â
âI saw you leaving Mr. Tragerâs office, and I donât know the situation but⌠I donât know if you know, but heâs not someone you wanna be around.â She stopped, feeling as if she were going to vomit. If she was going to get Cat to understand just how awful Trager was as a person, sheâd have to tell her everything. Dr. Catarina Crane would be the first person to know what happened.
Yet, when Cat let out an airy laugh, she felt the pressure get worse. Her anxiety practically skyrocketed.
âOh trust me Michelle, I know.â Cat responded, leaning back in her chair and crossing her arms.
âYou donât know, Cat. You really donât.â Michelle stated, and Cat noticed the tears brimming in her eyes.
âWhat did he do to you? What happened?â Her voice was a little bit more chilling, but it didnât mean she cared any less. Michelle looked back down at her hands, and no matter how many times Cat asked her what happened or to look at her, she wouldnât look up and she wouldnât respond. She had to gather all the courage she had in her to tell Cat, and she just wanted her to be safe. She didnât want her making the same mistakes she did, and while no one warned her about Trager, she was going to make sure Cat knew.
âMichelle?â Cat asked, though this time she was next to her, one of her hands over hers and a genuine look of concern in her eyes. This, along with when she first found out J.J. was missing, was the most human sheâd seen Cat. Normally she seemed robotic, cold and calculated, but for once she was showing a vulnerable side of her, she was showing that she cared about Michelle.
âI went on one date with him one nightâŚâ She began, her voice barely above a whisper. Cat kneeled next to her so she could see her face. She wanted to make sure she was okay and that she was comfortable opening up. Cat didnât mean to pry, but part of her wants leverage on him. It was selfish, and she knew it was, but any dirt she had on Trager would do her good.
âI agreed to go back to his place, and I donât know what I was thinking but I went. We had a couple drinks there and⌠I donât remember the rest, but I could tell what happened.â Cat suddenly saw red. She was beyond horrified, beyond angry, but not only that she felt vindicated. She knew there was something off about him the moment she laid eyes on him, she had every reason not to trust him, and she was right not to.
âI could tell what happened in the morning, though. Then he was sending me abortion clinic pamplets and threatening me if I didnât go through with aborting and-â She couldnât finish, overwhelmed by the memories and the emotions that came with them. Cat froze, staring at Michelleâs stomach and slowly piecing everything together. She was horrified when she finally processed the fact that her friendâs kid was his. Michelle was crying, but Cat couldnât move. She felt a flurry of emotions, most she couldnât even identify. She wanted to help her friend, who she knew was having a worse time than she was at the moment, but she was stuck in her own head.
âIâm so sorry.â She could only mutter those three words, and in the blink of an eye she was suddenly hugging her. She wasnât sure how she managed to get there, but she supposed all that mattered was that she did. She eased away as Michelle sat up a little.
âI just wished someone had told me. I donât know why I didnât see it, he was just⌠charming, I guess?â Cat felt herself almost gag at that description of Trager, yet she knew that not everyone had an undying hatred for him like she did. Some people might have actually liked him, and obviously Michelle was one of them. Was. She stood, but her legs felt like they were made of rubber.
âIâm going out with him tomorrow nightâŚâ Cat muttered. Michelle looked up, her eyes wide.
âWhat?â She asked, her voice shaky. Cat looked down at her.
âThank you for telling me this.â Cat said as she walked toward her desk. She went to the left side of it and opened one of the drawers, the middle one, and took out a syringe filled with a mysterious, yellow fluid. Michelle eyed it wearily, unsure of whether Cat was truly on her side at the moment or not. What she just told her had given her reason to believe she wasnât.
âIf he tries anything, Iâll make sure heâs never able to form a coherent sentence again.â Cat practically spat. Michelle couldnât help but feel frightened by Catâs sudden anger, even if it was for a good reason.
âIâm so sorry he did that to you.â Cat muttered again as she put the syringe in her bag.
2
âDoc!â That was the voice of the last person she wanted to hear from. She had gone nearly a week without seeing him, and not only that but she had that bombshell dropped on her earlier. She stopped in her tracks, but she refused to turn around. He would make her look at him anyway, who cared if he had to take a few extra steps.
âLook whoâs being all cold all of a sudden.â He continued on, attempting to touch her arm. She jerked away from him and watched as his face dropped. He furrowed his eyebrows at this, but she reminded herself that he shouldnât be surprised. She didnât like him, and she only agreed to go out with him because he was helping her.
âCat.â He scolded, but this only annoyed her further. She didnât say anything though. When he reached out this time, she didnât move away. Iâm doing this for J.J., she reminded herself as she suppressed the urge to puke. He grabbed her arm rather harshly and pulled her closer to him as he led the way down the hall. She was dragging her feet, not wanting to follow him or be around him, but she knew this wouldnât deter him.
âI think I found him.â He whispered. She stopped walking altogether and stared at him, bewildered. She didnât think he could do it, and if he was telling the truth sheâd say she was almost impressed.
âTake me to him.â She demanded. Trager smiled at this, at her desperation.
âAll right, follow me.â He said as he led her to the elevators.

Whumptober2020 - Day 5 - Rescue
Tony/ Pepper + Clint/Nat
Day 1Â - waking up restrained // Day 2Â - kidnapped // Day 3 - manhandled // Day 4Â - caged
âWhat if sheâs not ok Tony?â Pepper says quietly. Pepper knows Natashaâs history more than most; disclosed to her through conversation and work. Tony only knows because heâs hacked all her files. Shield, the KGB, anything really he could get his hands on. He may know more about her history than she does. Not that heâll ever tell her that. Natasha knows that heâs memorised all of her and somehow heâs not dead. Maybe itâs like having a witness; someone to see all your bad and all your scars and still treat you as human. Isnât that all anyone wants?
âSheâs always ok, Pep.â He says reassuringly. âSheâs always ok,â but this time more to himself. Ending the call, he focuses on flying.
ââ-
The call comes through on his phone which, he chooses to ignore; heâs almost got it, he just needs to - if the damn thing wonât stop ringing. Sighing softly, Tony covers his ears and turns up the music outside. Itâs rare for Clint to call him but he really hates answering the phone and does not want to hear whatâs happening - not on his own terms at least. Let him leave a voice mail if itâs so urgent.
Continuing to focus on his build; Tony is blissful; for once competing priorities are at a low and he knows that he can dedicate his time to this, itâs something for him, and no one is going to-
âTony?â
He feels his eyes roll to the back of his head. If he could, he would groan; but itâs Pepper and he respects her too much to tell her to go away. But he wants to; he really really wants to.
âTony, itâs Clint.â
Pepper puts the phone on his table and puts it on speaker. Clint wastes no time.
âNatashaâs been kidnapped. She was taken off the roof of our hotel adjacent building. There was a struggle. I need your help. This is a secure line.â
Each sentence is like a blow.
He wants to ask Clint why heâs calling him. Why not go through the proper channels; though instinctively he knows why. Heâs faster. He has way more of a chance of finding Natasha than any one else does - he has the tech and the ability to analyze quicker than any of them; and Clint knows it.
He starts hacking into their last mission debrief;
âWhere are you?â
Thereâs a beat and Tony assumes Clintâs looking at the coordinates on his phone. Converting them quickly into a 3D model rendering heâs suddenly in Rabat, Morocco.
âRabat? Youâre in Rabat?â What the actual fuck. He saw the pair yesterday. Actually; was it yesterday? Maybe it was the day before. He forgets he loses time.. Maybe he needs a clock that sporadically says the date and time or he could program The Robot to do it. He does some quick calculations.
âThatâs a 12 hour flight commercial, maybe 6 by quinjet, maybe 2 by suit. Iâll re-task one with medical now.â
Putting Clint on mute he looks towards Pepper who hasnât left the spot she was standing in. She looks scared and worried and hasnât moved an inch.
âPepper?â Moving over to her, he tucks some loose hair behind her ear, âyou with me?â
She gives a nod, âyeah.â
âYeah?â He sees her try to swallow this down. He takes her hand. âI need your help. Will you be ok in the quinjet? Weâll need to pick them up once theyâre safe.â
Pepper stands straighten herself and nods, confidently.
âI can do that, Iâll pick up the medical team on the way.â
Sheâs coming back to herself now. All business.
âCan you send the co-ordinates when you know them? The quicker I go, the quicker I get there.â
Heâs shaken her loose now, Pepper knows thereâs time for grief and worry and fear when this is over. Battle stations.
This isnât the first time, heâs sure it wonât be the last. Today Natasha, tomorrow him. Who knows.
He does wish it wasnât Natasha though and he knows itâs now personal for Pepper as well.
Their friendship borne of being in male dominated fields - a powerful alliance of friendship and knowledge.
Pepper sets off, transferring the call to Tony so she can make calls to the relevant authorities to land their jet in the airspace.
Tony unmutes Clint and turns back to the task at hand.
âIâm looking at satellite footage, when was she taken?â
The silence that hangs makes it clear that Clint doesnât know.
âWe got back to the hotel, ate and then she left for the scout point. She was on first watch. I think she has her earpiece in. Can you track that?â
Tony doesnât even touch on the fact that Natasha and Clint wear Starktec earpieces in missions; and not the generic ones. Natasha must have hooked them up to the correct frequencies so that no one would be the wiser.
He types quickly, looking for the relevant frequencies and pings any radio waves off that one. He bypasses the ones that are in Spain and Portugal - whilst feasible she may have been taken there itâs more likely they kept her in country. Narrowing it down he finds a likely mark - itâs a weak signal but feels like it adds up.
âSheâs about 21 miles from you, the earpiece is pinging from an importer warehouse.â
He checks his suit and calculates how quickly he can get there, maybe two hours at full speed? Grabbing a quick drink of water and granola bar he starts to head out, filling Clint in as he goes.
âI can meet you there but itâs going to take me around two hours flying at full speed; even if we get her the jets going to be 4 hours behind me. Do you have a plan?â
He waits for Clint to say anything and when he doesnât he realises that Clintâs running on fumes.
âIâm on my way. Head to the warehouse; I know you are anyway, and Iâll meet you there. The warehouse is guarded - I would advise not to engage tactically itâd be better to have a diversion and get her out when attention is elsewhere.â
Tony is the the launch pad, pushing off he thinks out loud âWho are these guys?â
He has the warehouse on his holo, the warehouse is swarming. He wants to be clear to Clint that going in solo is suicide, Natasha appears to be in the bowels of the warehouse and he only knows that because the signal she gives off is so weak. Underground is the only thing that makes sense.
âClint; so you know; theyâre everywhere. If you can; wait for my signal. Get yourself in position Iâll be there as soon as I can, Iâm swapping to your comms line now. The jets already left, Pepper is on board, and a med teamâ
He checks Pepperâs whereabouts, sheâs done well to get out so quick.
âTheyâll be there in just under 6 hours. We will have to get her out and get to the airport.â
Tony thinks for a minute. If they can get her location maybe they can talk to her.
â Letâs try and get her on coms.. If sheâs consciousâŚâ he leaves that thought hanging.
He concentrates on the directions heâs getting and the trajectory path of New York to Morocco.
âAnyway. Iâm now on comms, Iâll catch you soon bird boy. Hang tight.â
Tony disconnects.
He can zone out whilst flying but doesnât; he calls Pepper to check in.
âYou ok?â He opens, sending the airport coordinates to the quinjet.
Pepper answers with a yes, letâs him know sheâs received the info and lets Dr Cho say hello. Thatâs good, Natasha likes (which may be a too strong a word) the good doctor. At least they have more of a chance of getting her stable and to a hospital should it be necessary. Theyâve also picked up medical supplies and the jets stocked with some food and water.
âWhat if sheâs not ok Tony?â Pepper says quietly.
-
Clint contacts him to let him know heâs arrived. Checking the screen he lets Clint know heâs about 45 minutes out. He marks out Clint - knowing now where he is from the feedback of his earpiece and watches as he move around the warehouse. Less than ten minutes pass before heâs back to where he started. Thereâs static in his earbud and theyâre just in time to hear Natasha yelling Clintâs name.
Tony double checks - Clint must have cleared up the frequencies. Clint's saying her name reverently but Tony needs to know what she knows; apparently though, Natasha knows less. She doesnât sound good though. Her breath is hitching and thereâs definitely something sheâs not telling them.
âWeâre coming for you,â he says; more to himself than to Natasha
He boosts his thrusters and tries to turn 30 minutes into 5. Heâs twenty minutes away when it starts.
Screaming.
Natasha screaming. It is confronting and hurts him to his soul. His nightmares will have nightmares about this.
He sees Clint scrambling.
Fuck.
âClint! Wait! Donât go in!â
He gets it, he does, but thereâs too many of them. He sets off two smaller missiles, targeted for the front of the building. He hopes the building has some sort of structural integrity that it doesnât collapse on his team mates. He sends off another on to firework and draw fire. Natasha is still screaming and coughing and moaning. Sounds that no-one should be making. Itâs going on too long. How many rounds of this were there for her?
And then thereâs silence.
Theyâve either injected her with something or killed her.
He pushes his body and his suit to get there faster, and upon arrival itâs a clean up mission. They donât feel professional or well organised - but he draws more fire on arrival and takes a perverse pleasure in counting them out. He sees Clint arrive at Natasha; and almost feels that he shouldnât be a part of this intimacy; this rawness.
Clint's trying to rouse her, heâs saying her name with tenderness, thereâs nothing untilâŚ
Tony feels a bit like crying at whimper and moans that are coming from Natasha. Itâs at odds with the woman who gives the best poker face; even when sheâs stubbed her toe on the corner of a table or rocks up to debrief with a broken arm and a black eye like itâs nothing.
He lands close to the black car that Clintâs obviously stole, and waits for him to come out. Clintâs bundled Natasha in a blanket. Eyeballing her, sheâs semi-conscious but not all there, heâs not even sure sheâs aware that heâs there.
âIâll meet you at the airport,â Clint acknowledges that heâs spoken and puts Natasha in the passenger seat.
Tony links in with Pepper who lets him know theyâll be there in less than an hour, thank god. He lets her know theyâve got Natasha but sheâs in rough shape.
Heâs waiting at the airport and greets the jet when it lands.
âTheyâll be here soon.â He says by way of greeting.
Pepper nods. He acknowledges Dr Cho, and thanks her for coming.
Cho knows Natasha is a horrible patient, preferring to suffer in silence.
Tony could go a lifetime without Natasha being hurt and hearing those sounds ever again. Heâs switched off the comms hearing Clint talk everything and nothing to keep Natasha awake.
They wait in relative silence. Tony watches them arrive and Pepper follows him out to greet them.
Clint is holding her and thereâs blood everywhere. Pepper gasps audibly and heads back into the quinjet to find Dr Cho, they get her into the jet, and Tony helps straps Clint in - he goes to wrap it around Natasha as well but is stopped by the shake of a head.
âShe needs to go to the hospital,â Tony says to no one in particular.
Cho is eyeballing Natasha from the side.
âDo you think sheâll let me look at her?â
They watch Natasha move and bury herself into Clintâs arms. They all hear her rattling breath.
âClint,â Tony tries again, âmedical are the only ones who can deal with all of this.â
He watches Natasha tremble in Clintâs arms and then as he brushes her hair away from her ear. He pretends not to hear Clint ask Natasha whether she wants to be sedated. The shake of her head cements her position in stone.
Tony looks to Cho, âanything you can do from here?â
Clint looks scandalous.
âFuck off Tony, she said no.â
âSheâs losing blood, Clint! Sheâs clearly got broken ribs, I can hear her breathing. Not to mention a concussion - and I can see the taser burns.â
Clint looks uncomfortable.
âShe said no, Tony. Iâm not going make her.â
Tony drops it. Sarcastically apologises to Cho for coming.
Theyâre about 3 hours in when Natasha starts to seize.
ââ-
Hopefully chuck this under a cut tomorrow. Tomorrow we continue from this one leaves off.

Head over heels

Genre: Another nose bleeding ceo Jae, Fluff, Mature content
Word count: 5,818
Currently, in your mid-20s, studied for a degree in Administrative Assistant at a four-year college and working as a secretary in a major corporation. You have a good salary and excellent benefits, earning enough to rent an apartment of your own, but your workload may be more than you can realistically handle and no matter how motivated you are, it will be beyond the realms of human possibility.Â
Working with your superior, Jung Jaehyun, is more like a profession. There is always a sense of moral obligation to do more than the minimum laid down in the job description when the man himself works like a monster. You were prepared for the immense sacrifice as well had you accepted the offer. It was agreed.Â
With great reluctance, you have grown one hell of an addiction to caffeine, which is clear when you go without it for even one morning, like today. You feel foggy and crabby. None of the words seems to penetrate beyond your mind of half-conscious blank. The pen that is unfailingly in your hand, starting to draw elaborate doodles on a clean page in the notebook which is largely useless at this point. Â
Surprisingly, Jaehyun is not listening to the presenter as well. He has crossed and uncrossed his legs six times, peeked out the window eight times. His fingers plow through his hair, messing up the always-neat style he has probably struggled half the morning to achieve. The generality however appears to be interested in the object of the meeting, behaving orderly and attentive. Their intention is, of course, to impress their boss. However the man is probably scoffing inwardly at their obvious acts.Â
He is looking around, when out of the corner of his eye he caught movement. The strain on your face, your lips pressed tightly together, your body slumped almost sliding off the chair, as if your backbone has been pulled out through the top of your head. Amused, he brings his attention to what exactly you are struggling with and he sees your right foot: bared. Stretching on your toes, you try to snag your lone shoe but it is an inch out of your reach. And inside, you curse yourself to lose that annoying habit of swinging your feet.Â
He watches a moment more then drops his pen, letting it roll over. He bends and pretends to pick it up, catching you off guard as he picks up your shoe instead and holds it so you can slide your foot into it. You cannot quite comprehend of his gesture, and try not to think about itâeven when his hand, lightly touching your ankle in turn, sent coils of heat twirling all the way up your leg and through your whole body. Nothing comparable to this has ever occurred which requires direct bodily contact with your boss, to be exact. You slightly choke on your own saliva, but refuse to look at him in the face, visibly embarrassed. In the meanwhile, Jaehyun glances at you the oftener, thus noticing your reaction of an interesting one.Â
Weeks have gone by, you never spoke of the incident, and he never brings up the subject either as though nothing ever happened, despite the tension that is sometimes evident in the way he watches you like he demands a âthank youâ after the act and thinking you are a woman so ignorant, unmannered and ⌠immodest. That thought troubles you more than the other, though.
Troubles always, somehow, never come to an end, never reach exhaustion; they are new every morning, one woman in particular is trouble herselfâPark Sooyoung, the embodiment of your day-to-day horror. You have to admit, from head to toe, she is more beautiful than any female, including yourself in this workplace. She is gorgeous with a perfect figure and has all the attention of the men here, except for the one enclosed behind glass doors on the 45th floor. Mr. Jung, Jaehyun, is eye-candy extraordinaire. Or âsex on a stickâ, which you overheard her conversation that day in the pantry.
The employee manual says, âKeep the dating scenes awayâ, as it is most likely to ruin the workplace or kill your career. She interpreted otherwise, eagerly looking for her dear ones. You do not understand her, her constant attendance at Jaehyun's office with a stack of papers which she claimed as her legitimate reason to meet the CEO. And every damn time, exercising intense self-control, you refrain yourself from laughing seeing her walk out a minute after with her âdocumentsâ left untouched, indubitably not a single glance from the man.Â
Then you know you might be in trouble when the buzzer system, a companion to the intercom, alerts you with two buzzes to indicate that you are to come into Jaehyunâs office. Knocking twice as a courtesy and you enter after hearing his bid and shutting the door behind. You utter no word, make no sound as you cross the thick carpet. You know the instant you set foot in there is something about the air that gives you a bad feeling. The familiar prickle ripples over your scalp and spreads down your neck and shoulders. You gulp.Â
He stops, looks up, then back to the chaos on his desk. âCouldâve stopped herâŚâ Phew!
âYes, Mr. Jung. I should. Next time.â Your sentence breaks into phrase, phrase separates into words, you speak out like a robot, totally expressionless.Â
âNo more next time, please.â He has never used the word before, rarely hear it from his lips, which sounds like an exasperating term because it shows the helplessness in him. âAnd put this away,â he orders, without lifting his head.Â
The bittersweet fragrance of coffee curls enticingly around your nose, the porcelain filled and still warm in your hand, whereas he has not even touched the beverage. Sooyoung needs to step up her game if she is ever so determined to get into his pants. Brown is the colour of the milky coffee that Jaehyun absolutely dislikes. He has them dark brew, no milk, no sugar, no creamer. You have tried it once and it tastes bad, it tastes awful as its poisonous-looking black. You switch the flat-out rejected beverage for the one to his liking and not so long after he finished with nothing left in the bottom of the cup.Â
He works all day, and you work all day. As the saying goes, âA good boss does not leave until after his last employee does.â But if it is the other way round, does that make you a good employee? Totally. The corporation has an extra busy month with the expansion to take all the business it can get. To demonstrate how busy it is, longer hours of work on the same day has been introduced. Even on a Sunday, you are with your friends having brunch when you receive a call to work where your boss has clearly heard the munching of food and clanking of silverware against China over the line. How sucks it is even when you have not drive today and given ten minutes to be there, you have to pay the additional for cab fare.Â
Inside, Jaehyun is leaning over his laptop and typing furiously. His fingers are almost a blur over that keyboard.Â
âSorry, Mr. Jung. Iâmââ you glance at your wristwatch, holding the tiny face of it between the fingers of your right hand and squinting, ââsix minutes late. I was caught in a traffic jam.âÂ
âItâs fine. Come sit.âÂ
You do what he asks. You peek over his shoulder and see a screen full of words, you peer harder at the teeny-tiny letters and it takes a fraction of a second to realize he is doing your portion of work. Almost immediately you interrupt him, almost instantly you regret your harsh manner when he turns to you with eyes filling with confusion before his brows knit themselves together in concern.Â
âMove over,â his fingers wrap around your wrists, pulling your hands away from which you have shielded the brightness of the display.Â
âNo, thatâs my work. I should be responsible for it.âÂ
âI donât have time for this,â he warns.Â
You grumble right back, âJust this one, alright? And Iâll do the rest.âÂ
âIf youâre feeling sorry then stay until I leave.â Oh so easily he is keeping you captive, simply taking advantage of his position because he knows that he can. And of course, you will.Â
There is the occasional tap tap on a keyboard, turning of pages, then comes the restlessness where conversations are strained or non-existent. As you let the spin of the swivel chair stops on its own, it yields to face the spectacular turquoise tank behind the ornate desk where Jaehyun is sitting at. There swims a three foot long koi which his father bought for 1.4 million after a fierce bidding war at a fish farm in the city of Hiroshima. The bare tank with no gravel or decorations is built into the wall covered with white marble; its simplicity yet luxurious touching makes it a convincingly beautiful moving portrait. Staring at it for the rest of the afternoon, or a probable evening, is enough to elevate your somber mood.Â
âMr. Jungââ
âJaehyun,â he corrects. He has previously asked you to dispense with the âmisterâ treatment when you and him are alone in the office but you cannot drop the formality just because he said so. You have to maintain the dignity of his position and allegedly emphasize an atmosphere of collegiality.Â
Suddenly you are eager to initiate a conversation, âI like your fish tank. Salt water?âÂ
âFresh actually.â Right there. He is giving you the look again. âItâs a carp.âÂ
âI know I sounded dumb⌠You donât have to make it so obviousâŚâ you mumble under your breath, but he heard you nonetheless.
The sky has sunk nearer to the horizon and everything is deep red. Your Sunday is like an ordinary weekday and ordinary rounds of filing, opening and sorting the mail, verifying facts and assembling dataâwhich you have gotten everything complete by now. However the workaholicâs compulsive ass stay rooted to his leather seat, as if he is growing right into it. Only when you call out to him for food does he excused himself from the havoc on his desk, reluctantly. It fascinates you most of the time how he actually listens to you when it comes to reminding him to drink, to eat, and never not to eat, because he always, always got carried away and forego meals. At some point, you are like his mother for real and feel an obligation to take care of him his health; while it only increases his dependency on you. Pretty sure you can accurately state his likes and dislikes with the certainty that you understand him better than he understands himself.Â
Two years of working with Jaehyun, you have never once put your foot in his pantry and you assume he never does too. It fills with the distinctive smell of those new things untouched by humans; pristine white cabinets reach to the floor and ceiling, bisected by a tasteful granite countertop and subway tile backsplash. The warm glow from the overhead lights giving the place a cozy, homey feel (and hiding layers of dust). Rather, you will work in here instead of facing the boring office neutrals 24/7.Â
You eyed him as he slurps his bowl of jajangmyeon and chomping down the strands of noodles with his front teeth. He resembles a rabbit eating like that but in all honesty you are hyper aware of the black sauce being splattered on his white shirt.Â
Or what he thinks about the food, âDo you like it?âÂ
He ponders momentarily before answering, âThis thing is unhealthy.âÂ
Well, you are unhealthy for your unhealthy eating habits!Â
Jung Jaehyun, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, is made for fine dining and ridiculously expensive food anyway. What will he even see in these cheap Chinese food?
âHow about thisâ Try thisââ Fried dumplings dipped into the red sauce of tteokbokki topped with a piece of kimchi. You pick up the salivating fusion with your chopsticks, before you know it, he leans forward and captures the heaping amount in a huge mouthful. It then follows by approving nods and satisfied hums, all the while your mind comes into play. Purposefully, you ignore the jolt of awareness, even though it twists you up like a pretzel.Â
âWhatâs the matter?â he asks. âDo I make you nervous?âÂ
The hell is he talking about. His speech is all but business-like and you are internally freaking out at this cheeky side of your boss.Â
âN-NoâŚâ
âI think I make you nervous.âÂ
âYou donât make me nervous,â you reiterate. Collecting yourself, you pick up overlapping circles of sliced radish and pop them into your mouth only to feel the choking burn of vinegar at the back of your throat.Â
âWhy do you shy away every time our shoulders brush?âÂ
âI donât like being crowded.â
âYou didnât seem to mind so much before.â
âThat was different.âÂ
âWhat was different?â He wears an open grin of amusement, enjoying every second of your embarrassment.Â
As you continue to stuff your face, you glance over at him, and caught him staring at you. You look away for a moment, then look at him again. âWhat are you looking at?â you ask through gritted teeth.Â
âI didnât mean to,â he says. âItâs just that, Iâve never seen you dressed in casual clothes.âÂ
You are always in a buttoned-up white blouse, black pencil skirt and matching fitted blazer. âRight, and I get tired of wearing the same thing all the time.âÂ
While he has always dressed in fine shoes and classy suits, you have never before, indeed, seen him like this eitherâoversized cotton-poplin shirt and black ankle pants. Though someone else may look like a baggy, slouchy mess in the outfit, he looks like a whole meal. This Jaehyun radiates comfort and soothing kindness that for a minute you have forgotten about him being your boss.Â
âWell, you donât look so bad yourself.â You tell him and he grins in that lopsided way.
Yet a man has his pride. So you add, âUgly as ever.â The comment itself is certainly a rude way to speak to your boss and instantly you regret it, but he does not seem bothered anyway.
âI may be ugly, but Iâm still better looking than you,â for which he retorts quickly. âSay. Why donât we skip work tomorrow?âÂ
You blink, taken aback by his idea, but in truth you desperately want to stay home and shed your responsibilities and act as lifeless and unrestrained. âWe canât skip work.â
âCâmon,â he whines, âI know youâre fucking tired of this shit.âÂ
Though once again taken aback by his unusual words and speech patternsâwhich you can only assume the filters of polite society is not working when he is overtiredâhis facial expression implies reference to something else. But why the teasing tone?
Then it hits you. Your Twitter account, where you have been very active the last few weeks, as a platform to express your thoughts and emotions on working tons of overtime. Your rants are so insane that it is as if someone has pixelated your brain. The ungenerous, unladylike words blurted you regret them.Â
âYou stalked me!âÂ
âItâs not my fault that your profile is public.âÂ
âWhy would you even search my profile?â
âJust checking out what my employees been up to.âÂ
He speaks about it so nonchalantly. You almost roared at him.
âThereâs a meeting tomorrow morning with Mr. Kee,â you remind.
He groans only at the utterance of the name of the presenter. Recalling what has occurred in the last conference, he resents waking up early to another yawning dullness, however he chuckles at the reminder of the little interaction between you and him. That brings a pleasant recollection and something to look forward to. Under the table, maybe games of tic-tac-toe, dots and boxes, or maybe, just maybe he can play with your fingers. He stares at your hands to savor the lingering and wonder if you know how incredible they are. Hands like thatâsmall and soft-skinned next to hisâshould be pampered. He can spin a dream of what those hands will feel like on his flesh.Â
Suddenly, an overwhelming feeling falls over him as he says, âIâd like to take you to dinner.â
âWhat?â you ask.Â
âDinner. Food.â A few seconds lapsed, and he says, âIt seems that Iâve been eating alone a lot lately, and Iâd like some conversation with good food.âÂ
âI have plans forââ
âYouâre not married, are you?â he asks.
âMe? No, Iâm not.â
âEngaged?â
âNo.â
âInvolved?â
âNo,â you answer, a little offended.
âThen letâs have dinner.â Thatâs it?Â
âLike⌠on a date?â Stupid, stupid, stupid, you tell yourself. Dinner. Thatâs it. You know that you are not supposed to overthink it as a romantic appointment, not with him. Perhaps, he wants to talk about the companyâs cash flow in a private setting, or he wants to inquire on the status of recent projects, or he wants to find out which projects are running. Perhaps, deep down, you want to casually talk about everything over good food, as a friend for the least.Â
âA real date?â
Date. He likes the sound of it, oh he likes it even more when you are the one clarifying it.Â
âThereâs such a thing as a fake date?âÂ
You roll your eyes at him.
âCall it a date then, as you wish.â And you resist scoffing out loud at his cockiness, while there is bursting red upon you the shyness of a young girl.Â
Hours elapsed upon return to work, but the ambience is more calm, peaceful and comfortable in the moment. Presumably Jaehyun had quelled his distress with food as he is adorable high-spirited than ever. The once deadly dull office is now filled with music of Cigarette After Sexâs and Frank Oceanâs, such that you poke fun of him being an emotional teen, while you secretly enjoy the songs as well.Â
By the time Jaehyun finally shuts down the computer, though the files are left open on his desk, it is already midnight. With a groan, you sink in the fact that you still have to wake up early tomorrow as per usual.Â
At the sound of it, Jaehyun turns to you with a raised brow, âWhat? Donât want to leave?âÂ
For a minute, he looked unusually handsome and resplendent, marked by deep-set brown eyes, little indentations in his cheeks. He is teasing and it does not help with how awestricken you already are by the look he gave you. For a second, you stand rooted to the spot with nerves twisting your insides; Jaehyun holding the elevator door open and waiting.
His fake cough brings you sharply back to your senses. âOh, noâ shitâ sorry,â a smile pulling at the edges of your mouth with false gaiety.Â
The elevator comes to a stop. Later taking larger steps than you usually do and out to the ground floor lobby, there he cocks his head, confused, âWhere are you going?âÂ
âIâm not driving today. Iâll take the bus home. See you tomorrow, Mr. Jung.â You bow and wave in a polite manner but he is quick to stop you from taking more steps away.Â
âIâll give you a ride. Come in.â
âItâs fine. The bus station is not so far away.âÂ
And just like that the both of you end up arguing at a distance over the way to get yourself home, with him still pressing the âopenâ button that his finger is most likely indented at this point.Â
âDonât keep me waiting,â his eyes stern as he scolds (but with no harshness in his voice) yet you then are aware of this mistaken outburst of his and so you quickly step inside. His lips curled up in a victorious smirk unnoticeable by you, a clear winner once again. Â
Jaehyun drives this maddeningly slow pace when the road is not even under congested conditions at this hour. Inside this four wheels, you seem to get strangely awkward with all the fidgeting of fingers on the seatbelt despite being on the same ride for multiple times. But those times were with his private chauffeur as well. Have you talk about the Jung Jaehyun drives one-handed? Because that is freaking hot. Spicy.Â
Things take off another noteâwhen the next morning you arrive with a cup of hot, steaming coffee and your favourite cinnamon sugar donuts on your desk. Judging that you appear to be showing up behind schedule for sleeping inâthe reason being so, it is better not to be reminded of. You run a list of names in your head to figure out who that âsecret angelâ could be. Aside from your only friend in the workplace, Chaeyong, who received maternity leave a few months ago. You hardly associate with the rest of the employees due to your position that you only need to deal with one person. And that only person seems to have been watching you the second you walk in, however, there he is sitting in his office, eyes trained on the documents from the night before.Â
It is of infrequent occasions he has the shades rolled up.Â
The said meeting with Mr. Kee goes by smoothly with the respective project itself taking form now and the next thing you knowâyou are sitting at a table of two in a fancy Italian restaurant located within the affluent area of central Seoul. You are still unable to stir the reality that the âdateâ is actually happening, judging that Jaehyun could have or should have brushed it off when both are time-poor during the day. Here you have him twirling a glass of red liquid by its stem mindlessly and show no signs of initiating a conversation. It is frustrating at first, but you think that there is a need to make the most of the night when you could have been eating cheeseburger and greasy food back at your little chamber.Â
Unfortunately, what should have been a long-winded conversation dies down fast with Jaehyun answering questions by questions in straightforward and short factual answers instead of throwing the ball back to you in effort of prolonging. You bet your entire fortune that Jaehyun is a mo-ssol (one who has never dated since birth), judging the way he speaks in a manner so expressionless like a piece of log, so stubborn. All those meetings or business events do him no good.
Sigh. You have to do everything yourself around here.Â
It almost takes you off guard when he asks, âSo⌠tell me about yourself.â You definitely knows him very well but it was never the other way round. Your heart beats with odd little jerks at the thought of his possible interest in you. Now, you do not want to give yourself a false hope of it being a romantic interest otherwise.Â
To make things easier, you suggest on the game of âI Likeâ, to which he shrugs and says, âOkay.âÂ
You begin, âI like⌠visiting zoos, scented candles and everything chocolate.âÂ
âThatâs odd.âÂ
A weird combination indeed but, âThatâs how the game goes!âÂ
âWell⌠I likeâŚâ he ponders for such a long time, as if mulling over the merit of finally revealing the side of him that you never knew of, nonetheless, âI like⌠turntable, pistachio ice-cream and Batman.âÂ
Your chuckle comes in response at his last item, âBatman, really?âÂ
âHey, never judge someoneâs favourite superhero!âÂ
âWhatever,â you mumble a, âSuperman is way better,â under your breath to which he catches on immediately and a childish bickering breaks out from then on who is the best superhero.Â
After paying the bill and a bit of you whining, âI donât want to go home⌠Itâs cold, dark and lonely, and coldâŚâ after wine after wine intake. Jaehyun takes you back to his place and things escalated from there. You kick off your heels attempting to slide across the marble floor in bare feet, stumbling forward you slam him against the wall while still holding on to him.Â
Though genuinely surprised, he cannot ignore your eyes like cataracts producing the hazy look, blush tingeing your cheeks from too much alcohol and every inch nearer you get he finds himself having trouble refusing your anything. Letting your index finger, delicate, almost like a feather, trace the arch of his eyebrows to the tip of his nose and along his pouty lips.Â
âN-no⌠We canât do thisâŚâ he groans in protest, holding onto a dangerous slippery rope that is âlustâ. He finds it completely wrong to take advantage of you in this drunken state, but you seem to not care at all as you slide closer to him stepping on his sock clad feet. Your narrow rib cage with the pillowy softness of your bosom pressing against his chest, so alluring with your breath mingles with his ownâthat is his last straw.Â
He inches a hand downward and wraps itself around your waist as he gathers you close capturing your mouth with his in a dance of sorts, tasting with tender, tantalizing nips and slow strokes of his tongue. Feelingâyesâthe excitement of his racing heart and the ragged edge of his breathing. You are so generous, so giving, so primally female. He has never done this before, but his body reacts, it is taut and hard and humming with impatience.Â
You ease his suit jacket off his shoulders and it drops on the floor behind him. Then he twists around, shuffling to his room until he falls backwards when his foot hit the edge of the gargantuan bed. Straddling atop him, you curl your hands into his pristine shirtfront and surrender to the consuming heat of his kiss. In semi-consciousness, your fingers flick open the buttons. He weaves his fingers into your silky hair as you continue to undress him. He spins your bodies around again, this time having his hips nestle their way between your thighs.Â
You want to touch him. You want him to touch youâall overâbut all he does is touch you with his mouth and feed you kisses while devouring your good sense. He growls low in his throat as he abandons your mouth to drag his lips along your jaw. He licks at the delicate skin of your throat and closes his teeth on the tendon joining your neck and shoulder, sending sensation shooting through your body like a hot bolt of lightning. You shudder, half expecting your head to explode.Â
âJaehyun⌠it tickles,â turning into a giggling mess when he slides his lips over your neck, kissing from the front to the sides to the back. He chuckles boyishly all the way and those giggles turn into breathy sighs, gasps when he lingers on the tender skin behind your ear. You moan, moving restlessly against him and nearly combust when the long, thick ridge of his arousal presses against you. Right where a painful, empty ache blossoms.Â
Every stitch of clothing removed and your entire body gives a single shiver as he enters with perfect precision, penetrating slowly all the way inside. He is so tender, so gentle with each thrust, making you cry out in blinding ecstasy and only crave him more. He revels in the new sensations of you enclosed around him so tightly, and how good your bare skin feels against his. It is a level of heaven he has never known existed.Â
âOh God, you feel so good,â he curses under his breath, closing his eyes as he savors each moment rising towards his own orgasm, âWant to come inside you, is that okay? Can I?âÂ
You cannot even form an answer properly with your mind fuzzy with absolute pleasure that adds to your intoxication, giving him a weak nod and clenching around him so he is moaning your name loudly. As you both reach the edge and shatter, you hold onto each other and squeezing whatever is there to reach out. Breathing deeper and faster, hearts pounding in your chests, laying there limbs tangled for quite some time.Â
Your internal clock wakes you up at eleven and you glance around trying to assimilate something of your surroundings. Your eyes, squinting in the sunlight that dance through the large windows. Your body, dressing in a pair of silk pajamas that is of luxuriousness you will never possess. Immediately, you head in the direction of what you assume is the bathroom. And your reflection, astonishingly clean and tidied up of the makeup from the night before besides the remnants of waterproof mascara and some semi-permanent âstainsâ on your skin.Â
Jaehyun looks to you popping out from behind the wall like a thief, his eyes falling to the shirt you are wearing and the corners of his lips twitch upward at the sight. You have not acknowledged his presence yet as you continue marvelling at the large apartment until you hear a soft chuckle from a distance. You shriek, there sits your superior at the dining table with a tablet propped up in a case.Â
âW-weâre⌠late for work,â you blurt out awkwardly, glancing at the clock on the wall.Â
There is a short pause before he speaks, âWell, good morning?â and tells you that he has called in to say that you are both away on a business trip. Skipping the fact that you are walking funnily.Â
The tips of his ears a cute shade of pink and it hits you, âD-did weâŚ?â Such a stupid question when your neck and chest all over have hickies that match the big one on his clavicle. Boy, were you wild last night. He only answers with fake coughs and avoids looking directly at you.
Your eyes squeeze shut with a heavy sigh upon an internal breakdown. How are you supposed to maintain a great performance at work when the embodiment of your disaster is only a few feet away. Things will never be the same. Heck, it was never the same since the incident from a month ago.Â
âPlease tell me I didnât do anything stupidâŚâ if sleeping with your boss is not dumb enough. You just have to be reminded about it over and over again. Is there any way you can shut down your brain or even better, trade it with someone else?
â...besides dragging me around by my necktie,â he mumbles, the shade of his ears intensifies and spreading to the column of his neck. Anyways, âAre you hungry?âÂ
You are about to reject and scram off to your apartment just to hide this enormous feeling of embarrassment you are suffering at the moment but heaven does not help you. Your belly rumbles in hunger and he is instructing you to take a seat.Â
The smell of lightly burnt toast with a side of eggs and delicious bacon as well as the aroma of caramel coffee makes your mouth water. Though it is just a combination of simple brunch menu, he manages to get the job done perfectly and you are inhaling the food with a childish grin. The humiliation from before has whisked off and thrown to the back of your mind, replacing with the appreciation of having someone to fill you up instead. Waitâ that sounds wrong. You choke on food and on the air itself at such polluted thought.Â
âAre you okay?â he rushes to your side giving gentle pats on your back.Â
âYeah, yeah. Iâm fine, justââ you find yourself going red again when you see that maroon mark on his skin.Â
His hand finds purchase on your head, stroking endearingly, âDonât get all shy with me now. Youâre practically all over me last night.âÂ
Right when you are getting mushy from the affection, he has to add that so you remove his hand and sigh heavily, âMr. Jungââ his brows furrow at the formal address, âMaybe we should just forget about the whole thingââ
âThereâs nothing wrong with that,â he interrupts, âIâve seen the way you look at me and you shouldâve known better. I wouldâve transferred you to another department if I were so against it but I kept you by my side, didnât I? You knew that I could hardly work with anyone else, I am stubborn at times and couldnât even take care of myself, but the fact that you are always there when I need you⌠You understand me more than myself and youâreâŚâ he heaves a sigh of overwhelming relief for finally getting off these words from his chest, âYouâre just amazingâŚâ There are sparkles in his eyes with the utmost sincerity.Â
Oh my Lord, is this a confession? Is it? This is a confession!
âSo⌠you took me on a date to fuck me?â Your mind chooses to betray you at the very moment, being equally submerged by the revelation.Â
âIâve never said that.â Bending, he leans closer, âBut we had a great time. True?â and kisses your lips you stiffen unprepared. Seeing that you did not answer, he adds, âI donât mind going for another. If youâre down for it too.âÂ
Things do change afterwards. The atmosphere of that particular 45th floor of the office building has now blossomed with bubbles of pink. Jaehyun has the shades rolled up ever since and sometimes sending you flirty gazes. It is surely distracting but you do the same and never fail to grasp the chance just staring at him in awe and thinking, âOh, this handsome man is mine!â The oftener he catches you watching and the intercom goes, âMissy, get back to work.âÂ
Even so, Sooyoung still pay her regular visits. As she finally leaves his office, you are called over immediately and the first things you say, âWhat does she want this time?â not realizing your tone of speech.Â
He grins, victorious, âWere you jealous all this while?âÂ
With a scoff, âJealous my butt.âÂ
âHad I knownâŚâ
âWhat?â What are you gonna do? I dare you!
âI wouldâve kept her in longer,â he says nonchalantly, though you are fuming with his ridiculousness (knowing that he is only teasing). But still!
He is quick to catch your wrist when you turn to leave, and tucks you in the warmth of his embrace. Your nose filled with the scent of him. His cologne makes you think of green, grassy meadows covered with yellow flowers. So fucking good.
âMr. Jung, itâs against the rulesâ Keep the dating scenes away,â you warn in a stern voice, feigning annoyance from his previous remark.Â
He leans closer instead and invades your space, capturing your mouth in a scorching kiss like he has been holding himself back for hours.
âMy rules, my way.âÂ

đ little teeny tiny crack fic of undertale drumbot? i need to see this ahdgfjdjksjhg
Hey the tiny lil crack fic inspired by this post (btw @sorrowsunny look at the thing I did) ended up being... not so little. Enjoy!
***
The Drumbot was one of Carmilla's more... interesting experiments. Which, Nastya knew from personal experience, was saying something. After his Incident, the only part Carmilla had been able to save was his heart and a file download of his personality, which she had altered to her will before inserting. And for all Carmilla was a scientist, she wasn't an engineer.
To put it bluntly (and that was for the best, Nastya didn't do well beating around the bush), Carmilla had shoved the Drumbot's heart and file into a metal contraption made of a clock, and he was forced to wander around on a spinning wheel with two metal balls at the end of his 'arms' and a screen that was perhaps meant to serve as his face.
The hat on top of his box was a nice touch, though.
The Drumbot's new body (if you could even call it that) made it hard for him to do the things he used to. His 'handballs', as Raphaella had called them (causing Ashes to spit out their drink, but the name stuck) were magnetic, could become electrified upon will, had laser and blacklight capabilities, and could play any song the Drumbot could think of. The only problem then was that Carmilla forgotten to add fingers. And as it was, she met her unfortunate and completely accidental end before she could do anything about that fact. Which meant, of course, that the Drumbot came to Nastya.
"You want... my help?" she asked after listening to his request. "I don't know a thing about biology. That's Raphaella's area."
The light square on the Drumbot's screen moved to the bottom left corner, which might have been his equivalent of not meeting her eyes. "She scares me," he said after a moment, robotic voice monotone but somehow still conveying shame.
"...You do know you can't die, right? What do you think she'll do to you?"
"Look what she and Carmilla did to Doctor Pilchard."
"You can't prove anything," Nastya said, probably too quickly. "That being said, I.... see your point. Will you let me run a diagnostic on you first? You know, look you over, maybe glance at your code? That way I can make sure I won't break you."
Two new glowing blocks showed up on the screen. Was he... blushing?
"Sure," he said after a pause too long. Helios, was Nastya going to have to explain how completely and utterly gay she was? Maybe she could just have Aurora lock the Drumbot in his room for a few centuries- he'd have to forget about any crush by then.
Nastya shook her head, telling herself to focus. There would be time for that later, and she had been dying to check out the Drumbot's tech.
"Sit here," she said, pointing at a spot on the floor. They were in her engineering room, and she always worked leaning against the wall or by crawling under or in things, and so saw no need for chairs. Brian sat, if you were using a loose definition of the term. His stick? Leg? robotic pole folded, so that he was hovering a bit lower than before."Good. Now, can I check your back? Carmilla had a love for hidden compartments."
He nodded, and she ran a hand over his back, searching for the hidden cavity where Carmilla would have placed the port. Her fingers caught on a latch, and she pulled it open with a grin.
There was the port, with the drive sticking out proudly. And, right beside it, was a little silver switch labeled on one side EJM and on the other side, where it currently rested, MJE.
Now, let us all be clear. Nastya wasn't the type to go pressing big red buttons just to see what they do- that was more Jonny's expertise. And Ashes'. And Tim's. And Ivy's, and Raph's, and- Okay, maybe it was her that was the outlier.
That being said, this wasn't a big red button. This was a switch. And no self respecting engineer can resist a switch.
The metal moved easily beneath her finger. And for a long moment, nothing happened.
Then metallic golden smoke started pouring out from little vents in the Drumbot's handballs, and ukulele music began from somewhere she couldn't see. Two projectiles flung themselves from wherever in his box they had been hiding, and Nastya let out a yelp as she ducked for cover.
The Drumbot made that might have been a shriek, if he had the vocal range, and raised his smoking hands to his box like he was trying to hold his head.
Nastya tripped over herself trying to back away. Her eyes dartwd between him and the two little drones circling above him. It didn't matter, really- they were quickly obscured by the gas. A mask dropped from the ceiling, and Nastya shoved it over her mouth and nose, silently thanking her amazing girlfriend.
The smoke filled the room entirely now, obscuring everything. She didn't even know where the door was. No escape, then. She pressed herself against the wall, watching where the Drumbot had been.
Out of the fog, two beams of light appeared, shining towards the middle of the mass. The drones, the logistical part of her mind said. The other parts of her mind watched in mute terror at whatever Carmilla had done, whatever Nastya had done.
A voice- not the monotone of the Drumbot, but an actual voice- emerged from the mass.
"Now the party's arrived."
Aurora's ventilation finally kicked on, clearing the gas from the room. Little by little, the Drumbot was revealed.
Or what had been the Drumbot, anyway.
Because standing in the middle of the room was a man made of metal. He stood, one hand holding his hat (the Drumbot's hat) and the other held dramatically behind him, sweeping open his coat. His eyes met Nastya's, and he sent her a charming smile.
"I see you know how to have a good time," he said, still posed dramatically. The spotlights reflected off his metal skin, and a part of Nastya tucked very far away made to swoon. She hit that part with a shovel and shoved it behind a locked door in her mind.
"Drumbot?" she asked uncertainly, finally lowering her mask. Now that she could see him better, she saw the clear panel in the center of his chest. Under the glass lay a bright red heart, pulsing steadily.
"The one and only." He swirled his hand and bowed deeply. "Well, sort of. Apparently Carmilla split me in two."
"And you- box you- didn't tell us why?"
"Because it would cause you stress, and I'm not fond of causing stress in that state. The means simply didn't justify the ends."
Nastya was smart- scary smart. And she had known Carmilla better than anyone except Jonny, had listened to many a rant about what makes someone human. Every mechanism had been a test to that- am I still human without a heart, blood, lungs, eyes, the list went on. Eventually Carmilla had come to a conclusion, an answer. She found out what made them human- really human- and poked it with a stick.
"Your morality," she said with realization. "The switch altered your morality?"
"Exactly. I'm the fun Brian." He sent her another grin- who smiled that much?- before a thought seemed to strike him. "The fun Drumbot? No, I like my name. Is it even my name now, if I'm only a heart?"
"Drumbot Brian," Nastya suggested quickly. Philosophy always gave her a headache. "Are you going to do that... smoky thing every time you switch?"
"What? Oh, no. That was a one time thing. The spotlights get to stay though. Hey, we can even use them for our performances!" His face lit up as he thought, and Nastya felt herself relax a fraction. "We would need more, of course. A lot more. Huh." Their eyes met once again, and in a split moment he had a gun pointed at her.
"Let me give you a lesson," he said. "I'm Ends Justify Means. That means the thing I want- the ends- are worth whatever I have to do for it. So! I want more spotlights, and you're an engineer. That means I'm perfectly willing to hold you at gunpoint and slash or shoot you to make it happen. Get it?"
He pulled the hammer on the gun back, and Nastya felt herself relax all the way. He would fit right in.

Summary:Â Taako unlocks a backstory reveal, Kravitz notices an astronomical discrepancy, and Noelle completes an errand. Itâs an evening of relaxation and bonding for some, and a night of furtive preparation for others, but one thing is constant â everyone is missing a few pieces of the story.
Characters: Kravitz, Taako, Barry Bluejeans, Angus McDonald, Magnus Burnsides, Merle Highchurch, Noelle | No-3113, The Raven Queen, The Director | Lucretia, misc. BoB cameos, Julia Burnsides, Garyl
Relationships: Taakitz, Angus McDonald & Taako, Barry Bluejeans & Kravitz, Kravitz & Angus McDonald
Hey, guess what fic isnât dead! Before we get into the action, I just want to state for the record that I, Rose, think mullets are generally a valid hairstyle (including on Barry Bluejeans). The opinions on mullets that a certain character expresses in this chapter are in no way representative of my views as the author. Anyways, enjoy the Taakitz before the storm!
(A âpreviously on,â since itâs been so long since the last chapter: THB all know Barry is the Red Robe, Barry knows THB are in trouble for death crimes, and heâs shared all his relevant backstory details with Noelle, who has agreed to help him save the boys from Kravitz with the endgame goal of stopping the Hunger. Kravitz has arranged a sort-of date with Taako, which heâs obviously excited for, but he doesnât know a lich and a robot are out to get him. Meanwhile, Garyl doesnât know why Taako stopped hanging out with liches about twelve years ago, and is really missing the spectral oats said liches always gave him. I think thatâs everything everyone knows and doesnât know!)
***
The Raven Queen had always reminded Kravitz of his mortal mother, not just because of the physical resemblance â which was indeed present, albeit slightly diminished by the beaked mask that concealed the Queenâs nose and eyes â but because of her temperament, kind but stern. She was a fair judge, and even a surprisingly forgiving one at times, but she held no reservations against telling people they could do better, if she believed it to be true.
So when the Queen approached Kravitz during his walk along the coast of the Astral Sea, in her usual form of a dark-skinned woman wearing a magnificent feathered cloak, Kravitz breathed a sigh of relief when he saw she was smiling at him. Her ethereal voice was both diminutive and thunderous at once, but thankfully free of disappointment or malice.
My child.
She unfurled not just one pair of midnight-black wings, but a hundred pairs, and suddenly she embodied an entire flock of ravens, circling Kravitz with impossible synchronicity and silence.
Come fly with me.
Kravitz leapt into the air, changing shape and sprouting wings of his own. In the form of a rook with dark blue-gray feathers and the pattern of an avian skull atop his head in light gray, he took off across the sea, and the Queen followed, casting a hundred identical shadows atop the waves.
This airborne sightseeing tour across the afterlife was not a new ritual for them â theyâd done this countless times since the Raven Queen had first taught Kravitz to fly, lifetimes ago â but Kravitz had noticed, over the past century or two, that the Queen almost exclusively reserved these flights for days when Kravitz felt stressed.
They soared through a cloud of souls, which danced and shimmered like snowflakes in a gentle breeze, and as they exited it, he finally spoke. âItâs a pleasure to see you as always, my Queen, but⌠er, what is it that brings you here today?â
My dear Kravitz, youâre even a bundle of nerves when youâre a bird. Youâre not letting those elusive lich bounties get to you, are you?
âI⌠I suppose I have been letting it get to me. In a way.â
Kravitz, you are competent and you are worthy. You neednât fear me reprimanding you â I have no doubt that you will capture them eventually. After all, you have a promising new strategy, donât you?
âMy Queen, IâŚâ Kravitz trailed off. The scenery of the Astral Plane changed with every flight, but today heâd stopped taking it in, preoccupied with wracking his brain for the right words. âI appreciate that â but itâs really that ânew strategyâ you mention that Iâve been worrying about, not the liches themselves. Iâve been talking to Taako, and to a lesser extent Magnus and Merle, and ââ
The flockâs flight slowed, and two hundred glassy raven eyes all fixated on Kravitz as he transformed back into a human, hovering in midair and clasping his hands together as he spoke.
âI didnât believe them at first, but they really donât remember their crimes against death, Iâm sure of it. Theyâre not dangerous people â dangerous to themselves when they rush into danger, maybe, but not dangerous to the world. They stopped Legion, and their friend Angus has been telling me about all the people theyâve saved from the Grand Relics, and I â I would not feel justified reaping their souls, even if they fail to capture Bluejeans and Lup. Thereâs just so much we donât know about how theyâve violated the laws of life and death â it may not have even been intentional on their part. My Queen, I sincerely believe we should grant them the same benefit of the doubt we grant to people roped into necromantic cults against their will â I can vouch for their character, and I know many other souls, both living and dead, who will do the same.â
KravitzâŚ
The flock was completely frozen in place now, and though he didnât need to, Kravitz held his breath â a nervous habit from his life that he still hadnât broken after centuries.
Is this why youâve been stressed? Because you were anticipating this conversation?
âPartly, my Queen.â
I trust your judgement, Kravitz. I cannot pardon these three bounties altogether, knowing so little about their offenses â but if you deem it fitting, then I will grant them an indefinite respite as we investigate further. In the meantime, what do you propose for the escaped soul Noelle Redcheek and the necromancer Lucas Miller?
âSo far, neither of them have done ill with their borrowed time. Noelle never asked to return to the world of the living, and she fought heroically against Legion, while Lucas⌠well, I spoke to his mother, and she seemed confident that heâd learned his lesson. I think we should allow them to stay in the world of the living until they die, provided they commit no more necromantic offenses.â
Then that shall be our policy moving forwards. Do keep an eye on Lucas, if nothing else, but I reviewed Noelleâs file personally this morning, and she sounds like a pleasant young spirit.
Still hovering in the air, Kravitz executed a bow as he let out his breath. âI appreciate the trust, my Queen.â
I will consult with Istus, to see if she can discern the pasts or destinies of the three⌠unique bounties. Until then, they are to be presumed innocent.
Kravitz smiled, because it was no secret that the Raven Queen relished every excuse to consult with the Lady of Fate. âIâm sure Lady Istus will be happy to hear from you.â
She will, and I donât need to be the goddess of fate to know that. The ravens swarmed together, consolidating back into a seven-foot tall woman with dark brown skin, black roses adorning her hair, and sapphire-blue eyes glowing from behind the slits in her mask. She draped a cloaked arm over Kravitzâs shoulder as she continued:
Now, my child, you said something else was bothering you besides the status of your bounties?
âWell, itâs⌠I justâŚâ Kravitz shook his head. âLet me put it this way: do you ever get nervous before talking to Istus, even though you always like spending time with her and know she feels the same? I guess you probably donât, because youâre a goddess ââ
Oh, I do.
âOh.â
Do you have a commitment tonight? Let me guess â with Taako?
Kravitz smiled sheepishly. âWe⌠er, Iâm not even sure which one of us talked the other into it, but we might have arranged to go to a wine and pottery place on the moon together ââ
Of course, the Chug âN Squeeze. Thereâs one in the Celestial Plane as well.
âYouâre joking!â
Istus and I have been going there often lately. She loves all arts and crafts, after all.
Kravitz sighed. âWell, I had been wondering where all the clay ravens in my office were coming from.â
Do you like them, my child?
âOh, theyâre wonderful. The real office corvids like to perch on them, I guess to assert their dominance?â
The so-often stoic Queen laughed in a voice that couldâve belonged to a human, despite the cacophony of caws that swept across the Astral Plane in place of an echo. Kravitz, Iâm sure your date will be divine. You have my blessing.
âIt is helpful, not having to worry about arresting Taako in less than two months,â Kravitz admitted. âThank you, my Queen.â
One last thing, my child â Iâd like you to prioritize hunting down those problem liches, unless anything else comes up. I canât shake the suspicion that theyâre connected to your former bountiesâ cases â or should I say for Taako, your potential future boyfriendâs case?
Kravitz spent a few seconds of increasingly awkward silence thinking about that second sentence, but ultimately decided that he didnât want to challenge it. âTaako and his friends are doing important work of their own at the Bureau of Balance, and I donât want to drag them away from that any more than I already have â but Iâll ask them to keep me updated if they find any new leads, and Iâm quite sure they will. Bluejeans seems drawn to them, and to the Grand Relics, like a moth to a flame.â
So I suspected, the Raven Queen replied. It seems Istus and I have much to discuss.
***
With a dramatic flourish of his scythe, Kravitz stepped out of the rift and into Taakoâs kitchen. Taako was leaning against the counter waiting for him, chin in his hands and a smug, catlike grin on his face.
âSooo, notice anything different about me?â
âNot sure. New hat?â Kravitz replied, feigning confusion. âJust kidding! The new haircut looks great.â
âFinally, someone realizes! Lumberjack Ruffboi and the lunar youth pastor didnât say a thing about it.â Running his fingers through the considerably shorter hair in question, Taako snorted â apparently in response to the nicknames of his own invention â and Kravitz chuckled along with him.
âDonât get me wrong, you wear the shorter hair well, but why cut it now?â he asked Taako. âIt wasnât that long ââ
âNot that long? It was turning into a mullet, Krav, and thatâs fuckinâ unacceptable. Can you imagine us walking into a five-star, metropolitan establishment like the Chug âN Squeeze together, you absolutely killing it â pun totally intended â in your feathered cloak and designer suit, only for me to saunter in behind you, sporting an honest-to-Raven Queen mullet? Who do you take me for, Barold J. fucking Bluejeans?â
âOf course!â Kravitz sarcastically conceded, laughing. âClearly, I was running the risk of mistaking you ââ He gestured to Taako, brown-skinned and freckled with distinctly pointed ears, âfor my old undead archnemesis Barry ââ
He stopped talking as Taako dove to catch his Umbra Staff, which had rolled off the kitchen table seemingly all on its own.
âHey, what gives?â Taako demanded of the umbrella. âI thought we were cool again after the other night â you got something against me trash-talking mullets, or what?â
The Umbra Staff didnât reply, and Kravitz rubbed his neck. âEr⌠you talk to your umbrella often?â
Taako shrugged. âYeah, and I talk to my wizard hat and my favorite fantasy electric mixer too, sometimes. Sâno biggie.â
âSometimes people in the Material Plane give me strange looks for talking to corvids, so I guess I canât judge,â Kravitz admitted. âBut speaking of talking to birds, I have good news!â
Taako slung his Umbra Staff over his shoulder. âOh, bird news? Thatâs my favorite kinda news!â
âI spoke to the Raven Queen this morning, and⌠well, youâre not entirely out of trouble, but you donât have to worry about that two month time limit anymore! The Queen decided that since no one knows exactly what your crimes were, we canât judge you for them fairly, so you and the boys are safe at least until someone cracks that mystery â potentially safe forever, if the truth comes out and the Queen finds it sympathetic. Noelle and Lucas have also been granted amnesty, so donât worry about them either.â
âHuh.â Taako rubbed his head, blinking slowly a few times. âSo⌠weâre calling it quits on the lich hunts âtil further notice?â
âMore or less, but Iâve got a hunch youâll run into Barry again whether youâre looking for him or not,â Kravitz answered. âSo if or when that happens, Iâd love a tip off.â
âGotcha.â Taako nodded slowly. âWell, at least thisâll be good for Angus. Little half-pint can finally chill out instead of worrying about me all day.â
âAbsolutely. See, when I went to beseech the Raven Queen, a big part of my argument was that reaping these doofusesâ souls would make an over-stressed ten-year old very sad,â Kravitz joked, deadpan. âSo she really had no choice but to give you a respite â wait. What do you mean, at least?â
âOh, you know.â Taako shrugged, averting his eyes. âItâs just the end of a short-lived bounty hunting era for âcha boy. It was dangerous work, but hey, my whole job is dangerous, right? Solving a lich mystery was a nice break from the routine ââ
Then he sighed. âOh, what happened to me? What happened to Taakoâs good out here? Iâm not into peril! I shouldnât be missing it no matter how muchâŚâ He met Kravitzâs gaze again, smiling sheepishly this time. âNo matter how much Iâm gonna miss you, when youâre busy hunting ghosts and Iâm busy hunting Grand Relics again.â
âAh.â Kravitz felt his face grow warm â which should be a rare for a reaper without blood or a heartbeat, but seemed to be happening an awful lot around Taako lately. âWell, if itâs any consolation, the Raven Queenâs pretty generous with vacation days â after all, how do you think I made time for our date tonight?â
Taakoâs eyes lit up. âOh, weâre officially calling it a date? I mean, I knew the subtext was there, but why didnât you tell me earlier?!â
Kravitz clapped a hand to his mouth, several seconds too late. âThat was â oh, gods. That honestly wasnât â that truly wasnât intentional, but if you want it to be a date? I would love to call it one.â
âOkay, okay, I got a related idea for you ââ Taako leaned in a little closer, and for the first time, Kravitz noticed the flecks of gold and burgundy in his dark brown eyes. âHow about we just stop making idiots of ourselves and kiss already?â
Then Taako leaned back and facepalmed. âDamn, I shoulda said âstop making idiots of ourselves and make out already!â That works so much better than ââ
Kravitz kissed him on the cheek â just a quick peck, made brief not by a lack of interest in kissing Taako, but by Kravitzâs reluctance to tear his eyes away from Taakoâs own for any longer than a few seconds. Taako kissed him back, running his hand down the back of Kravitzâs neck â
Then he withdrew with a jolt. âAw, weâre about to be late to pottery, arenât we? I even made reservations ââ
âNot while youâre dating me, youâre not!â Kravitz exclaimed, drawing his scythe and slicing open a rift that led directly to the Chug âN Squeeze. He grabbed Taako by the hand, and the two of them laughed as they tumbled through the portal, scaring the wits out of the host but earning a cheer from Killian and Carey. Magnus â who was contentedly third-wheeling behind the couple, in his weirdly wholesome Magnus way â raised an eyebrow at first, but then gave a friendly wave and returned to the misshapen cup he was molding.
âToday,â the instructor coughed, clutching his chest, âweâll be walking through how to make plates. Please, for the love of all the gods in the universe, do not make clay interplanar portals, because weâve already had more than enough of that.â
âWhat fun!â Taako exclaimed he settled into his seat, then whispered under his breath to Kravitz: âI dunno what Iâm making, but itâs not gonna be a plate. Real art is born when you start out with no plan, and go wherever the moment takes you.â
âHonestly? You do you, but I canât really relate. Like, maybe itâs because music is the only type of art I normally pursue â but Iâd rather have sheet music in front of me as a jumping off point, even if Iâm planning to improvise, you know?â
âYou were a bard? I shoulda known.â Taako tried to shape his clay into something that could pass for a plate or platter at a glance, yet remain legally distinct. The instructor gave him a suspicious look, but quickly moved on to reprimand Magnus for attempting to recreate his wineglass. âLove you for that, and you know youâll have to show off your kickass music skills for me one day, but how does a bard wind up working for the death goddess?â
âInteresting story, that,â Kravitz admitted. âYou want the long version, or the short version?â
âI dunno, maybe a brief novella?â
âOkay. Yeah, I can work with novella length.â Kravitz leaned back in his chair, removing a few clumps of clay from under his nails. âAt the beginning of the end of my lifetime, give-or-take eight hundred and twenty years ago, my sibling and I were travelling a dangerous road, and we got in over our heads. We were passing through an abandoned cemetery, and⌠itâs hard to forget how we were just joking about how ominous it wasâŚâ
He got a distant look in his eyes. âBut the second we started to laugh, a gang of bandits jumped out from behind the graves to ambush us. Now, I was a damn good bard and my sibling was a damn good artificer, but we were unprepared for combat â and, worse outnumbered five to two. We pruned their ranks to four, then three, when the first two ruffians tried to charge us, but the other three had both range and cover, and they rained arrows on us from both sides of the road. My sibling took a hit that left them in critical condition, so⌠I did the only thing a protective older brother could do, upon finding oneself and their injured loved one assailed in a cemetery. It was a split-second, desperate decision, but⌠I played a song to raise the dead.â
âYou did a death crime,â was what Taako said out loud, but what he thought was Iâd do the same thing. Which was strange, not just because he couldnât play any instruments, but because he definitely didnât have a sibling whose peril would prompt such an arcane outburst from him.
He wouldâve liked to have someone like that, though. Someone to unconditionally watch his back on those tough journeys, someone whoâd raise the dead for him, someone â
Someone to tell him to quit psychoanalyzing himself on date night, come on, Taako, youâre giving yourself a headache.
âAs rash as it was, Iâd do it all over again if I had to,â Kravitz confessed, apparently too focused on the story to notice what mustâve been visible confusion on Taakoâs face. âThough maybe donât tell the Raven Queen I said that, because it was⌠quite the crime.â
Absentmindedly, he picked up a few extra clumps of clay and began to roll them into a thin cylinder between his palms. âThe graveyard the bandits had chosen was a good place to ambush travellers, but the perfect place to be ambushed by the undead. The zombies I raised were individually weak, but there mustâve been close to two dozen of them, and they surrounded the ruffians that had surrounded us. While they bought us time, I poured all the power I had left into healing my sibling from the brink of death â and it was all worth it, because they got away safeâŚâ
âBut you didnât,â Taako murmured.
âNo,â Kravitz confirmed. âBut donât look so glum. The ending of the storyâs not all sad.â
He placed the clay cylinder on his plate-in-progress, flattening it slightly as he affixed it to the rest of his project, then set to work shaping another clump into something quite different. âWhen I died, I was almost immediately met by the Raven Queenâs reaper at the time. She was⌠not exactly thrilled that Iâd summoned a minor undead army â an undead militia, she called it â but my zombies and the bandits had more or less mutually destroyed each other, while she saw I was a first-time offender whoâd only acted in self-defense, and wasnât putting up a fight as I was escorted away from the world of the living. She told me she would be keeping an eye on me for the first few years of my afterlife, just to make sure I hadnât developed a taste for necromancy and decided to hatch an escape plan from the Astral Plane, and then escorted me to a a pleasant little island in the Astral Sea.â
Kravitz added the final piece of clay to his creation, and Taako realized heâd formed a raised scythe pattern at the plateâs center. âHopefully this sticks when it goes into the kiln. Anyway, I spent about the next five years on that island, but the reaper brought me plenty of instruments to play and books to read upon my request, so it was hardly a punishment. I was surprised, though, the day she showed up and said that the Raven Queen had requested my presence.â
âAha. Now hereâs the start of your career, right?â
âExactly. When she offered me an apprenticeship as the next reaper-in-training, I was initially⌠apprehensive, to say the least, but I eventually accepted the offer, and⌠well, you know perfectly where the story goes from here. I was a better fit for the job than I couldâve ever expected, and⌠there were some nice perks, too.â He smiled. âFor one thing, I got to spend a few months with my sibling and parents after each of them passed away.â
âIâm glad that worked out for you,â Taako said, with a sincerity he rarely used in combination with those particular words. For the first time since Kravitz had started talking, he took a good look at his own clay, which looked like⌠a misshapen lump, or maybe an especially boring rock. He probably couldâve paid more attention to what he was doing, but at least he hadnât gone and subconsciously made a plate.
âBut you know,â he went on, stroking his chin, âIâm intrigued by this implication that by peacefully turning myself in for death crimes, I could get nominated for a reaper jobâŚâ
Kravitz laughed. âOh, I wouldnât recommend that loophole. Maybe if the Queen hadnât approved your respite, I would suggest it as a last resort ââ
âWhatâs wrong, afraid of me stealing your job?â
âNo â Iâve been a reaper for eight centuries, but the one who trained me only retired about four hundred and fifty years ago. Two to four reapers serving concurrently isnât uncommon. The problem is, the Queen usually chooses reapers who have some prior knowledge of necromancy â without having used it for evil or anything, of course â and unlike most of my bounties, Taako, you donât seem to be a necromancer? I mean, Iâm sure you could learn, because youâre clearly a skilled wizard, but I wouldnât encourage it. Youâre just starting to get out of trouble as is.â
âIf you insist,â Taako said with an exaggerated sigh. âSo the Raven Queenâs ideal recruits would be, what, a couple of lich superheroes who swore to only use their dark powers for good?â
âIn an ideal world, yes â but certainly not in the universe we live in, because those kind of liches donât exist on any plane Iâve visited. Like I said, Iâve been doing this centuries, and even the rare times Iâve seen liches start out with good intentions, they canât hold it together once they actually become undead. I guess Barry has debatably held it together, at least compared to the baseline for liches, but gods know what his intentions are, so I donât plan on offering him a job any time soon.â
Taako took a sip of his wine. âYou could still set him up for an interview sometime, just to see,â he suggested, completely deadpan. âMaybe heâll surprise you.â
***
The view of the night sky was gorgeous from the moonbase, perhaps even on par with the blue-tinged literal heavens of the Astral Plane â but there was also something off about the view tonight, something Kravitz couldnât quite place.
âWhat an atmosphere, am I right?â Taako sat down on a bench, still cradling Kravitzâs plate gingerly in his arms. âWho needs telescopes when you can stargaze from the moon?â
âIf we ever have another artistic date, we should come out here earlier and try and paint this,â Kravitz agreed aloud. Internally, he was only growing more puzzled as he ran through a laundry list of variables.
The moonbaseâs artificial lights had long since dimmed for the evening. They were miles above any other sources of the light pollution that plagued the modern world. The sky was cloudless from horizon to horizon, and the real moon was barely a crescent, hardly a bright enough beacon to drown out the lights of any stars.
So why did the sky look emptier than Kravitz remembered it ever looking in his lifetime, as if an invisible black backdrop at the edge of the Material Plane had slowly inched closer, smothering the most distant stars one by one and dimming the night by a barely-perceptible degree? Was his memory all wrong, or had something subtle yet cosmically pivotal changed?
âOne of our artistic dates has got to be something musical,â Taako went on, apparently either unconcerned by the state of the sky or oblivious to it. âYou keep up with modern music at all?â
âMmm, on and off. Not so much recently, but I went to a lot of concerts last century.â Kravitz noticed Taako shivering slightly as a stiff breeze blew past, and draped his raven-feather cloak over Taakoâs shoulder.
âHey, thanks. Will RQ hand these cloaks out to any old Joe, or do you have to be a reaper to wear one?â
âYou have to be a reaper to receive one ââ Kravitz winked. ââ but I have an extra I could loan you, if you promise you wonât wear it next time you commit a death crime.â
âItâll get me more use than the Cloak of the Manta Ray, thatâs for sure,â Taako snorted.
He pecked Kravitz on the lips, and Kravitz kissed back before the two of them both looked back up to the sky again, hand in hand this time.
âThis is a very weird question,â Kravitz began, âbut do you know how often visible stars go out? It canât be very often, can it?â
Taako frowned. âDepends. You mean, like, as supernovas, or in the more anticlimactic ways?â
âEither, really. I just⌠I kind of thought there would be more stars visible from here than you can see from the surface, but the sky looks a little emptier than I remember from stargazing when I was alive.â
âThat is weird,â Taako agreed, ââcause stars all die eventually, and get reborn from the dust left behind â but they burn for millions or billions of years first. A few centuries is just chump change to stars; thereâs no way it should make that much of a difference ââ
âOkay, thatâs what I thought,â Kravitz said. âMaybe my memoryâs just cloudyâŚâ
âHmm. I guess thatâs one explanation.â Taako rubbed his chin, then leaned back to rest his head on Kravitzâs shoulder as he squinted at the galaxies overhead. âHmmm.â His murmur turned to a hum, his breath pleasantly warm on Kravitzâs neck.
âIâm sure youâve studied more astronomy than I have, so Iâll leave this mystery to you,â Kravitz told him. âI prefer my mysteries down to earth, or maybe in the Underworld ââ
âMe? Astronomy? Studying?â Taako laughed, and Kravitz felt him shiver. âYouâre giving me too much credit. I justâŚâ
He paused. âJust kinda picked up the basics in my free time, I guess.â
âYour free time where, at wizard school?â Kravitz teased.
âNope! Taakoâs Amazing Self-Taught Wizard Homeschool for life, baby. I just read about astronomy⌠here and there, I guess. Probs a library, not that it really mattersâŚâ Frowning, Taako rubbed his head, and Kravitz saw his hand come away damp with sweat.
âSpeaking of libraries, we should visit one together sometime,â Kravitz pivoted, and was relieved to see Taako smile again, sitting up a little taller. âI love catching up on science that was contentious in my lifetime, like germ theory, or what will happen when the sun goes out ââ
âOh, thatâs an easy one for us nowadays. Weâve got a few billion years before it turns into a white dwarf and eventually goes nova â not supernova, mind you, but still pretty nova. You wonât wanna be around for it.â
âIâll try and retire from immortality before then,â Kravitz chuckled. âIâm sure my work would be cut out for me reaping ââ
An electric buzz infiltrated the back of his mind, and he tapped two fingers to his temple, adjusting the celestial signal. âIâm so sorry. Hang on a second.â
âBusiness call?â Taako asked dejectedly.
âYeah. Necromancers wait for no stargazing date nights.â Kravitz relayed a silent message of confirmation back to the Raven Queen, and lowered his fingers, cutting off the connection. âAlright, the Rockport Fantasy Costco got caught selling necrotic artifacts â again â but itâs not that urgent. Any other couplesâ activities you want to squeeze into, letâs see, the next five minutes?â
Taako shook his head. âNah, better to save all the good stuff for next time than to rush it. But speaking of that â when should next time be?â
âI have no idea when Iâll be free, honestly ââ Kravitz admitted, ââ but I just remembered! Youâre not a wanted man anymore, so I can give you my Stone frequency!â
âAw, hell yeah!â Taako rummaged through pockets full of pudding and magical trinkets, eventually procuring his own Stone of Farspeech. âHere, plug in your contact info and Iâll text you back ââ
âOh, gods, I was just going to read you my number! Your way is so much more efficient ââ
âHey, Old Man Krav, donât be too hard on yourself! Most people your age wouldnât even know what a Stone of Farspeech is ââ
Caught up in parting banter, neither Kravitz nor Taako noticed when directly overhead, another star vanished without fanfare as the encroaching void swallowed it wholeâŚ
But miles below, at a furtive meeting in the foothills of an ill-charted mountain range, two undead spirits were all too aware.
***
Barry supposed it was obvious that he was nervous. In lieu of a racing heartbeat, the scarlet threads of his robe were repeatedly unravelling, then weaving themselves back together in a slightly different pattern each time â though he supposed he should count his blessings, since at least Noelle looked a lot less horrified than she honestly had the right to be.
âI think I got everything,â she told him, completely unfazed as he snatched the sack of components from her with a shaking, blurry hand. He really hadnât meant to snatch it, like a feral cat snatching food from a human hand it didnât yet trust. It had just sort of happened that way.
âThank you,â was what he meant to tell her, but the sound that came out was indistinguishable from nails on a chalkboard, and he tried again. âThank you, Noelle.â
The second time, it was more of a rasp â a lot like the voice heâd put on to talk to Taako, Merle, and Magnus in Goldcliff, except not at all intentional this time â but at least it was recognizably his, and for that, he was willing to settle.
âMister Bluejeans, are you⌠okay?â Noelle asked him â and there it was, the question heâd been waiting for. âYouâre surrounded by an awful lot of crimson lightning.â
âIâve dealt with worse. Iâll live,â he told her. âWell, no, bad word choice â Iâll survive. Liches like me just⌠donât handle negative emotions well, but better I express it than repress it. Besides, Iâve gotten through worse before.â
It mustâve helped, talking to someone who reacted to his eldritch nervous tics with concern rather than horror â because the rasp in his voice started to subside, and his hands looked almost human again, albeit incorporeal, as he sorted through the bag of components Noelle had delivered:
Iron filings by the pound. A few jade crystals, imperfect yet sufficient for their purposes. An arcane core, currently deactivated, yet surrounded by a humming magical aura made from practically the same stuff as Barryâs own current form.
And last but not least, several handfuls of black opals â an unpleasant reminder of the Hungerâs approach, of the stars blinking out and the color being sapped from the world. Their shifting pattern iridescence was so familiar that Barry could easily imagine pure white eyes opening on the surface of the gems, even though he knew he was safe, that these stones were nowhere near perfect circles.
âThese will work,â he reported. âReally, I canât thank you enough.â
âOh, come on. Itâs the least I could do,â Noelle told him. âDid you finish the cannon upgrade?â
âSure did.â Barry returned her cannon arm to her, and she reattached it gingerly, humming with satisfaction as she tested moving it around. âHad to override a couple of Lucasâs anti-modding measures, and itâs gonna be a hassle to recharge, but itâs all set up to deal radiant damage now. Just please donât test it in here, âcause my poor subterranean lair may not survive.â
Noelle laughed. âGotcha. Once I get some practice shots in, Iâll be ready to set the trap. You feeling up to it?â
âI still donât feel ready,â Barry admitted, âbut itâs not like Iâve got any other options, besides sitting here and worrying more. I just⌠I just have to take it one step at a time.â
He placed the opals back in the bag, along with the other components and a wand heâd made specifically for writing runes. Out of sight and out of mind, if only for a brief respite.
Tomorrow, Iâm saving my family from the Grim Reaper, he resolved. Then, I can worry about saving the planar system.

End notes:
Taako is actually wrong about what will happen to this planetâs sun in billions of years â white dwarfs only go nova if theyâre located in binary or otherwise multiple star systems, like a certain two-sunned planet had ;) Thereâs also a couple references to the Grand Relics in this chapter that I like to think are clever, let me know if you caught them!
(Also, describing the Taakitz kiss as âa peck on the cheekâ was a certified 100 percent intentional bird pun â shoutout to this ficâs awesome beta Fex for encouraging me to take that joke and run with it completely seriously!)

Lost in Time - ch 12
Spring was here; it was still cold but now it was a lot wetter. Â He missed the snow in a way, since it was essentially a readily available cold pack for sore muscles.
And oh boy, were Arlo's muscles sore.
Eli had started them out easy; a couple weeks of basic work outs with her slowly introducing new techniques and exercises each Monday with the weekend set aside for rest and recuperation. Â But by the second month of spring she'd started ramping things up: harder, more grueling exercises, longer sessions, diet requirements. Â He could tell he was starting to put on muscle mass already but all the work left him so stiff and sore that he often got back to his room in the evenings, climbed into bed, and didn't move again until morning came.
He couldn't go straight home tonight though; his day had started bright and early with the group exercises, then he'd spent another afternoon down in the facility, and tonight he was supposed to meet Nora at the Round Table for dinner. Â It was the first arranged meeting they'd had in...awhile. Â No amount of sore muscles would have him missing this. ((Continued below cut))
-------------------------------
The Barnarock Black was her Thursday evening drink of choice, and being as it was both a Thursday as well as right on heels of a several-hours-long social meet-up with Carol and Antoine, Eli was ready for a drink.
And food. Â Being as she hadn't expected the meeting to last as long as it had she'd skipped lunch, and while there were snacks and tea she had to really restrain herself from eating a ton of junk food while trying her best to ignore the rumblings in her stomach. Â Thankfully the chatter never really let up so she didn't think anyone had heard her gut screeching for sustenance but once they'd all parted ways she'd all but run down the street toward the Round Table.
On her way through the door she was almost knocked over by Nora leaving; the girl had thrown the door wide open and slammed it (accidentally) into Eli's hand as she'd been reaching for the handle to open it herself. Â As Nora shuffled by with a half-apology and all but ran toward the hill leading toward the church Eli stood there both wondering what the heck had prompted her to rush out of there while also trying to awkwardly pinch shut the fresh cut over her middle knuckle before it started to really bleed.
Inside the Round Table she could see Asher at the long side of the counter, Dawa and Dana at the far end of the counter taking up the pair of stools there, Mars and his daughters in a back booth, and Gale and his family were sitting at the round table in the middle of the room. Â Sonia was busy buzzing back and forth between tables and the back of the restaurant and Django was nowhere to be seen but based on the number of people in here he was probably up to his ears in food orders. Â
"Evening," Asher greeted her as she took a seat next to him. Â He tilted his head and got a look at her hand. Â "Need something for that?"
"Nah. Â It's just a scrape. Â Did Django not have her favorite pie or something?"
"Who?"
"Nora, isn't it? Â With the church?"
"Oh, yeah - that was Nora. No idea. Â Didn't even know she was here until she left - I never seem to notice that side room there."
Eli knew what he was talking about; there was what looked like a newer addition on the front of the restaurant - it had a large bookcase stuffed full of books, a radio on a stand alone cabinet, and a single booth with a pair of loveseats (which wasn't so odd considering that instead of benches or chairs at the other booths there were plush couches that seated 3, maybe 4 if you piled in together). Â It was easy to let your attention slide right passed it since you couldn't really see it or see into it unless you crossed the room to the tables on the back wall.
It looked like just Arlo was sitting-
Ah. Â Ok then.
Eli inhaled through her teeth - an awkward hiss, of sorts - and sat down at the counter. Â It took awhile for Sonia to make it over and take her order; the cut on her knuckle kept oozing and she'd resorted to periodically swiping the blood off with a thumb and then sticking said thumb into her mouth.
"You SURE you don't want something to wrap that in?"
"All the napkins here are cloth. Â I'd rather not stain them with a bodily fluid."
Asher rolled his eyes and pulled a rumpled, dark green handkerchief out of his pocket and offered it. Â "And before you ask, no, I haven't blown my nose into it. Â It's clean but stained so don't worry about adding to it."
As he said the handkerchief WAS stained - looked like oil, and blood too - but she wrapped it around and tied it off. Â "Well, at least I won't drip anywhere. Â Thanks. Â I hate how much hands bleed before clotting up."
"I agree - knees and shins too. Â And no problem. Â I've actually never, ever needed to blow my nose in one of those - my dad made me carry one around for that purpose and I always end up using it for something else. Â It's a pretty gross concept, really...stuffing a crud-filled cloth back into my pocket. Â And I'm supposed to use it several times over a day?" Â Asher wrinkled his nose at that. Â "And I say that after having gutted fish and food animals...guts and blood? Â Totally fine. Â Snot? Â No thank you."
Eli chuckled; he had a point, after all. Â He also still had a noticeable bruise across his cheek from a cross-country jog last week where he'd taken a tree limb right to the face when an end piece had snapped off and slapped the rest of it directly back into him as he'd gone to push passed it. "We usually had bandages and tissue glue on hand for little things like this. Â I've even stuck industrial tape over cuts to hold it over until I got back to treat it properly. Â Drove Peter absolutely insane doing that. Â Was good times..."
"Peter?" Asher repeated.
She leaned forward and braced her elbows on the counter, putting her chin in her hands. Â "Yeah - he was one of our team medics. Â Him and Ashley, kept us pieced together and put all the blood and chunks back where they belonged."
Asher nodded slowly at that. Â "Not a bad idea - having a dedicated medical person. Â It's not something we typically do unless it's a big expedition. Â But, we all have some basic first aid training so it's not like we're heading out without anything at all."
"Do you have assigned squads in your Flying Pigs? Â I'm not even sure what an adventuring guild is."
"Not really," he answered. Â "We're a sort of grab bag group - we pick and choose who goes where, unless someone was specifically requested for a contract job. Â As for what we do we inspect old ruins for dangers and clear them out, protect those who need protecting, and we help map out areas that no one's been to in centuries. Â We've been a bit focused on that lately - eventually we'll make better strides out into the Peripheries and the Great Begeondan and get some settlements in place there too but, no lie, those are some of the most dangerous places on the continent. Â Full of monsters and rogue AIs, weird weather, extreme temperatures too."
"Sounds like my kind of place."
The look he gave her was somewhere between surprise and suspicion. Â "You're...joking, right?"
"Not in the slightest. Â Believe it or not there were a lot of wild, wide open places still left in the world back in my time period. Â A lot of our training happened out in harsh areas, and sometimes we'd get called in to go track down some idiot tourist or terrorist that had disappeared out there. Â Rangers had to be ready for just about anything, in any climate or location, for any reason."
Now he looked less like he thought she was joking and more just genuinely surprised. Â "So - I mean. Â It just seems weird to me that what survived through the ages were stories of humans living lazy, luxurious lives, with robots doing everything. Â And then you say there were wild spaces and hard training and having to be ready at the drop of a hat. Â Why was there any need for soldiers, or rangers? Â At least, human ones anyway."
Eli shrugged. Â "Each time I hear 'robots did everything' it surprises ME because it seems like no one actually gives thought to what that means beyond its surface. Â Would YOU want your life in the hands of something that's one hack or power failure away from shutting off entirely, losing all your files, or turning on you? Â Most people tended to act honorably and not target the innocent and whatnot but still, there were those who wanted their voices heard or wanted power and control no matter how many people they incidentally or purposely killed. Â In hindsight the fact that the leaders of the world worked so hard to keep the nasty, dark, and terrible things out of the public eye seems to have...really slapped the rose colored glasses on, to the detriment of accurate historical record. Granted, "accurate records" were a bit of joke anyway - at least to those who knew what was being to told to military and what was sent out to civilians. Oh, a hospital got hacked? A train engine exploded for no reason? Power shut off mysteriously? Â Nah, nothing serious - just "equipment failures" causing weird quirks and shutdowns," Eli said, raising her hands to stick air quotes around 'equipment failures' and all but oozing sarcasm. Â "The world was...certainly something, compared to what it is now. Â But there's no such thing as a utopia. Â People are always going to be unhappy about something, or slip through the cracks of society and feel they have a justifiable reason to make their displeasure known in violent ways. Â There's a reason all the nations still had standing armies even though we'd had peace for centuries, before I was even a concept in Fate's outline. Â They kept us all busy with public works projects, organized war games - think big but friendly skirmishes with harmless paint-based or laser weapons with sensor suits - and, like I mentioned before, the occasional idiot tourist rescue, but it wasn't all sunshine and daisies unless you were a regular citizen."
Asher let out a soft noise - Eli thought it was 'geez' or something similar - and rubbed at his chin, going silent for a bit. Â Sonia brought out Eli's usual beer then disappeared just as quickly as she'd popped up; Eli had half the bottle downed before Asher spoke again.
"Bet you never thought you'd be correcting history books, huh?"
She sat the bottle down and did a half-assed imitation of jazz hands. Â "Ta da, I am full of surprises." Â That rapid shaking movement dislodged the handkerchief around her knuckles a bit so she untied and then re-tied it back into place, using her teeth this time to help tighten the knot a bit better.
Over the chatter and sounds of cutlery on plates Eli made out the sounds of plodding feet, and shifted on her stool just enough to see Arlo slouching his way toward the door; right as he reached it it opened and Remington was framed in the doorway briefly before he stepped aside.
"Oh, hey - how'd it--" Remington was cut off as Arlo slipped passed him and kept going without a word; the man stared after him a moment. Â "--go..." he finished his sentence with a frown, and a shake of his head. Â He came inside and up to the counter to take the empty stool on Eli's left. Â "Evening, guys."
"Evening. Â How's the knee?" Eli asked.
Remington slid his legs around and flexed his leg a bit. Â "Not as bad as I thought it'd be, by now. Â It hurts but no more than it does when the weather is bad."
"Good to hear. Â I wish flex-gel still existed...that stuff worked wonders."
"Well, we make do," Remington chuckled. Â "What's tomorrow looking like?"
"Starting with a warm up run, then I have a couple new things to show. Â They're...hard, so I won't keep you all too long at it, and you'll have the weekend to recover like normal."
"Something to look forward to, then," Remington replied. Â
Sonia came back with Asher and Eli's orders, took Remington's, and disappeared again.
As she picked up her fork Eli offered the two men a small grin. Â "I probably should have warned you both to eat light tonight. Â It's going to be a rough morning."
-----------------------------------------------------
"Before today...no idea...what a burpee was," Asher wheezed from where he was laying flat on his back on the grass. Â "Can't say I care for them....or the reverse ones..."
"A sentiment I can get behind," Sam groaned. Â She wasn't laying down but she was sitting a couple feet from Asher with her arms around her legs along with her head nearly between her knees. Â
Remington was off to the side finishing up some additional push ups with a sack of sand on his back for weight; Eli had let him do a few burpees to see how his knee held up and had eventually decided not to risk blowing the joint out. Â While Sam and Asher did regular and reverse burpees with one-pound sacks of sand in each hand Remington had to do lunges, sit ups, and push ups with a five pound sack. Â
For whatever reason though Arlo wasn't present. Â
Earlier, before they'd started on their run, Eli had caught Remington and Sam sharing a knowing look, and when asked neither of them owned up to knowing why Arlo had skipped today. Â She'd decided not to press the issue and had gone about the morning as she'd planned; being as the burpees had wiped everyone out she was content to not do their cool down jog and was just settling on the top of the fence when she spied Arlo's figure coming toward them from Portia's gates. He was...slouching a bit, and looked a little tired. Â
"Morning," she called when he was within not-quite-shouting distance.
"Morning. Â Sorry, didn't mean to miss today."
"No problem. Â I can do a repeat if you're still up for it."
From his spot still flat on the ground Asher raised a hand. Â "Run - run while you still can."
Eli snorted. Â "Well, yeah - running is part of the routine."
"Not what I meant," Asher chuckled. Â He rolled over and groaned as he got to his feet. Â "I've got to get back out to the facility...maybe lay down somewhere that isn't wet and muddy for a bit before I get dragged into the depths to watch some old folks fart around in piles of dust."
With a smile Eli slid off the fence. Â "Remind them to leave things where they found it and to not try turning anything on. Â Going to be hard enough as it is to unlock personal stations without them tripping the lock out mechanisms."
"They've been fairly good at keeping their hands to themselves now that they have Stewart to entertain them but I'll remind them. Â See you guys later."
With that Asher headed out of the fence gate and headed toward town; he was walking in a slow, wincing manner, and Eli made a mental note to go a bit easy on them on the next couple of work days. Â A few moments later and Arlo was standing at the fence - on the outer side - and after a pause he sighed.
"I have something I need to speak to you privately about, if you have time."
"Sure." Â She hopped off the fence and looked to Sam and Remington. Â "If you want to do your cool downs that's up to you but otherwise I'll see you guys Monday morning, or whenever I next run into you."
She left through the gate and walked alongside Arlo down the road heading toward the shoreline; by her estimate they were halfway to the harbor before he started speaking.
"I wanted your opinion on something because it technically involves you. Â But first I need to ask - have you noticed anyone treating you differently, or rudely, lately?"
Eli shook her head. Â "Not that I've noticed. Â There's still some people that I think I make nervous but they're also not anyone I speak to or see often." Â She paused and then let out a small huff of laughter. Â "I think I'm doing a pretty good job proving I'm harmless to people I see on a day to day basis."
Arlo nodded at that and his pace slowed just a bit. Â "Have you interacted with Nora or Lee much?"
"Ha, no. Â Nora runs away from me and I think Lee would walk straight through the side of a building to avoid walking on the same street as me. Â I do notice he gets a bit louder in his sermons in the plaza if he sees me nearby but he doesn't directly single me out."
"So, you don't think Lee has had too much influence on how others are treating you?"
Eli slowed to a stop; Arlo took a few more steps before stopping but he didn't turn around. Â "Not that I can tell. Â But I'm guessing he's got some sort of influence over YOU and I'm at the center of it, right?"
He sighed heavily, sounding annoyed. Â "Yes, unfortunately." Â For several moments he stood there silently, then finally turned around to look back at her. Â "Nora and I were sort of dating. Â I'm not really sure if we were officially a couple or not. Â There's...something there, but I don't know what. Â The thing is, she broke things off with me last night because of my association with you."
Eli raised an eyebrow at that. Â "Don't tell me she thinks you were cheating?"
"No, nothing like that," he answered quickly. Â "She's not happy that I'm openly associating with something the Church is so against."
"...the past," Eli sighed; Arlo nodded in response. Â "You know that's a bit ridiculous, right?"
"The Church has its views, and I have my own regarding technology from the old world. Â I agree that there's a lot of dangerous things left behind from your time period. Â But I also agree that not all of it could possibly be bad. Â If it was ALL bad I feel like there wouldn't BE a past for us to be studying. Â I know Nora strongly believes we shouldn't be using things from the past but I also know she's changed her mind on a few things once she'd directly experienced it or learned about it. Â Knowing that, I feel like Lee is responsible for her...stance, I guess, regarding associating with you."
"So confront him about it."
"That's...something I'm considering," he replied after a pause. Â "But what I wanted to talk to you about was your own personal experience with Portia's townsfolk. Â Gale was pretty direct about wanting to hear about any sort of trouble that Lee is causing, in the context of it causing YOU trouble. Â But this doesn't directly affect you in any way, it just affects me. Â If it's not your life he's interfering with then I don't know if I should tell Gale and risk rocking the boat."
"I think you should," Eli said, crossing her arms and glancing over a shoulder toward the distant and yet somehow looming pinnacle that the Church sat on. Â "If she wanted to break things off it should be HER decision, not because some crusty evangelizer told her to. No preacher or employer or authority figure should be free to meddle to that degree in someone's personal life. Â Not to mention that he's just asking for Balance to beckon and Judgement to come reckon..."
Arlo looked briefly confused by that last bit; Eli just shrugged - she could always explain the phrase to him later if he was interested. Â "-look, even if it's not affecting me directly it's clear I'm being used as a sort of weapon here. Â I could care less if someone is cursing my name up, down, and sideways, but I really don't like the idea that I'm essentially being used as a political bludgeon. Â In fact, I think I'LL go talk to Nora and get the real story out of her."
"I'd rather she not know-"
"Do you really think she'd just expect you not to tell anyone?" Eli interrupted. Â "Or that no one would notice you two split and not have questions?"
"I... I guess not." Â He sighed heavily again and tilted his head back to stare up into the sky. Â "I just don't want to cause a rift between anyone."
"Let me see what I can find out and THEN we can decide if we want to rock this particular boat or not. Â Might be that IF Lee was behind this, and IF he thinks he got away with it, he might try it again with other people and then THAT might actually affect me directly. Â If anything it's worth it to try and stop that before the metaphorical rocking ends up capsizing instead."
Arlo nodded. "All right, I guess. Â I'm going to head back to the Corps building. Â Let me know what you found out."
"Will do."
They walked back to town in silence and at the base of the hill near the plaza Arlo kept going while Eli took a sharp left to head to the path that spiraled up to where the church sat on top of a ruins (and if it was the location she thought it was it had once been several floors of administrative offices, a number of clothing boutiques, and a ground floor restaurant). Â By the time she got to the top and was looking at the church's doors that familiar feeling of nostalgia had hit her...nostalgia felt like a strange emotion to be having but she supposed it was a step up from the usual soul-crushing gut punch she usually got when she let herself think about something she recognized.
"Knock knock, anyone home," she found herself muttering as she shouldered the door open and stepped into the quiet chapel. Â
It was nice in here, at least - nothing opulent or over the top. Â Pews, carpet down the aisle, banners and a chandelier, stained glass windows and murals on the walls. Â There was a fountain near the back wall behind the pulpit (which was just a small podium with a book sitting open on it), and she thought she could see a piano back there too.
The only thing breaking up the silence was the gurgle of water and the rhythmic sounds of sweeping coming from somewhere to her left; Eli walked up the small ramp into the sanctuary proper and from that spot she spied Nora off in the corner with a broom in hand.
The girl looked up to her and Eli saw her tense up.
"Morning. If you've got a moment I'd like to speak with you," Eli said. Â Not much of a greeting but the girl already didn't like her so no amount of politeness was probably going to change much.
"I uh...I need to finish sweeping." Â The girl was gripping her broom like she thought Eli was going to attack her; Eli wondered what exactly Lee had been telling her.
"That's fine. Â I can wait."
It was clear Nora had been hoping Eli would just leave but instead she watched silently as Eli moved a bit further into the room and sat down on the back pew there. Â Eli kept looking forward, admiring what she could see of the murals on the nearby wall; eventually she heard the sweeping start up again and could track Nora by sound as the woman finished up in that corner and moved down to the entryway, then back up and across into the corner on the right. Â She heard the scrape of a metal dust pan and the clatter of what she guessed was the top of a trash can opening and closing, and then silence. Â Eli let the silence stretch on for a bit before turning around; Nora seemed like she was debating whether she should run out the door or not but froze when she noticed Eli looking at her.
"Good to go?"
"Go...where?"
"I figured we could just step outside so if your minister shows up he can't yell at me for being on church property."
Nora inhaled and exhaled slowly then nodded, and mutely headed out the door; Eli followed along as the girl headed off to the right, to a wooden platform that was similar to the other wooden platforms that made up sections of the path that led up here -- it lined up with the path, in fact, and made it look like whoever had built it had intended to keep going up and around into the sky. Â She had a slight twinge of discomfort from the fact the platform gave a clear view of the land around Portia which included quite a few destroyed buildings.
 Don't think about it.
"All right," she said then, blowing out a breath. Â "I'll get right to it: Arlo told me. Â And I want to know if that was YOUR decision or if Lee put you up to it. Â Because he's not sure and I'm not happy to be in the middle of this."
Nora winced slightly and rubbed at an arm, and at first didn't respond. Â Eli stuck her hand in her pockets and purposely looked to the left and down into the tree farm while trying to ignore the ruined observatory that she could still see out of the corner of her eye.
"We talked about it...and I agreed, so it was my decision," Nora finally said. Â "The relics of the past are dangerous, we shouldn't be embracing anything from that time period."
Eli turned her attention back to the girl. Â "Including me?"
"It's..."
"Look, I get it - you church folk aren't going to like that I exist. I'm a living reminder of how humanity almost wiped themselves out. Â I'm not asking you to like me. Â I am asking you if YOU made the decision to break things off with Arlo, on your own, for your own reasons, or if Lee convinced you to do it because in his mind it was the right thing to do because of Arlo's associating with me."
Nora's shoulders slumped a bit and again she was silent for a long period. Â "...I guess it's a bit of both. Â Lee's said that-"
"-let me stop you right there. Â Lee hasn't bothered talking to me, period. Â Whatever he's said I intend to do or teach is something he pulled directly out of his own ass." Â At that Nora's eyes widened a bit but Eli didn't know if it was due to the language or because of some possibility that she'd exposed Lee for lying. Â "Here's the thing. Â I know a lot about a lot of dangerous things everyone seems afraid of - AIs, weapons, computers, devices. Â Just because I know how something works, or worked, doesn't mean I can replicate it here. Â For every one thing I could maybe manage to write up a technical readout for there's fifty others that I can't. Â I know how to put a plasma pulse rifle together but I couldn't begin to tell you how to make one starting from a raw material base; I could describe step by step how to troubleshoot an anti-grav propulsion unit but hand me every single separate part, down to the nuts and bolts, and I'd have no clue how to assemble it. Â There's a lot of things that, if it already exists, I could probably get it working again but there's no way I could build it from the ground up because even if I knew everything about everything, the fact remains that your technological level just isn't where it needs to be to MAKE anything."
Nora simply stood and listened silently, and was staring at some indeterminate point on the horizon past the tree farm.
"...so," Eli said into the silence that followed. Â "Was it Lee, or was it your choice?"
Nora hung her head. Â "You already know the answer to that."
"I was hoping I was wrong. Â So, barring Lee's meddling, WOULD you have made that choice?"
To her surprise Nora lifted her head and answered immediately. Â "Yes. Â I think so, anyway. Â Just...not like I did, or when I did."
Eli nodded approvingly at the admission. Â "All right, we're getting somewhere then. Â What's the ACTUAL reasoning then?"
"I just... I don't know. Â I'm attracted to him - he's brave, and handsome, and kind. But I feel so... Â I love his stories, and love spending time with him, but there's so many times where once he runs out of stories it gets...it's like we run out of things to talk about. Â We don't have much in common it seems. Â I try to find things to talk about but its usually the same things each time - the weather, the news. Â I've even tried telling him about books I like but I feel silly trying to explain an entire book's plot. And..."
Eli raised an eyebrow. Â "And?" she prompted - she wasn't going to let her clam up now that the proverbial dam had apparently burst.
"-I was only supposed to stay in Portia for two years. Â I asked to stay longer and was granted an extension to my mission with the Church, and while I love Portia I can't stay here forever. Â I have schooling to finish in Atara and then I'd like to settle down and start a family, and Arlo wants to join the Flying Pigs and would be traveling all over. Â I don't think either of us can stay with the other unless someone wants to give up a dream."
"Aha..." Eli muttered. Â "That I can understand. Â Mine and my husband's jobs kept us apart quite a bit but neither of us would have ever asked the other one to give up their career."
"How...did it work out, then?"
Eli gave her a small smile. Â "We enjoyed every moment we got together, when we had the time. Truth be told, my marriage was arranged - I just got super lucky in that I actually fell in love with the person my parents picked." Â At Nora's shocked look she held up a hand. Â "I know, it sounds weird - arranged marriages weren't at all popular back then, and were even against the law in a lot of places. Â But all the men I was around were all soldiers or rangers, and I didn't want to marry another serviceman. Â My parents picked someone I knew in gradeschool so he wasn't a total stranger, and we ended up fitting together nicely."
"Phyllis ran away from an arranged marriage...I didn't think one could be successful."
"Don't get me wrong - I thought long and hard before I asked my parents to do that for me, AND asked them to make it clear to whoever needed to hear it that I wouldn't be putting my boots away if I got married. Â It's not something I would ever suggest to another person. Â But, to get back on track, I'm only mentioning my marriage and circumstance because it's entirely possible you and Arlo could make it work even if you're apart for long periods of time. Â It just boils down to, do you think that's what you'd want?"
Again Nora fell quiet, and Eli stayed where she was while the other walked over to the edge of the platform and leaned against it with  her arms folded across the top plank of the fence. Standing there, in the quiet, Eli could hear footsteps coming up the path and assumed they were about to be interrupted - probably by Lee.  She gave Nora a couple more minutes before clearing her throat to grab her attention.
"Give it some thought, and be honest with yourself. Â And when you have your answer, walk your happy little butt down to the Corps building and be honest with Arlo. Â You're still welcome to dislike me," Eli added after a moment, smiling slightly. Â "I hear someone coming though so I should probably make myself scarce."
"All right...I'll do that," Nora replied, voice quiet.
Eli nodded to her and then turned to plod back down the path. Â As she expected she passed Lee coming up; he gave her a brief sour look then turned his nose up to her and sped up to get by her faster. Â She managed to keep from rolling her eyes until she had her back to him and once she'd circled around enough to put him entirely out of sight she sped up into a trot -- may as well get her cool down jog done. Â She would check in with Arlo later this afternoon instead (it made more sense to give Nora time to go talk to him on her own, before Eli went to tell him what she'd said -- it'd also mean a lot more for him to hear it from Nora).
As she passed under Portia's gate she paused at the split in the road; ordinarily she'd jog down to the harbor and back with the others for their cool down run. Â If she hung a right here she'd go up to the tree farm and she could easily keep going and check in at the facility - today was supposed to be one of her free days to do...whatever she felt like, but she didn't have much in mind to do. Â Maybe she could get back to rummaging through the spare parts and start the onerous duty of stripping down and re-working the auxiliary power bank to see if they could convert it over to wind power.
Yeah, that would probably be a better use of her time today.
She paused to stretch and then continued on, jogging up the road; there was someone coming down the road toward her - someone she didn't recognize. Â She offered the man a smile and moved off the road into the grass, and the man returned the smile and offered a little wave as she went by.
As she got to the tree farm's gate it swung open and out came Dawa, and when he saw her he waved at her and gestured for her to pause.
"Hey, Eli!"
"Hello Dawa. Â You need something?"
"Was Selene home when you left?"
"Uh... Â I actually have no idea. Â I usually get up and out of the house before she does and I spent the morning out exercising with the Corps folks."
Dawa nodded and grunted. Â "Ah, all right. Â Was hoping to possibly save myself a trip down there. Â But no big deal - it's not like I'm walking across the continent," he chuckled.
"I'm just out for a jog, I could turn around and see if she's there and then send her your way."
Dawa considered that a moment, then nodded. Â "If you don't mind. Â I've got a lot of work I need to get done by tonight and any minute I can save is worth it."
Eli raised an eyebrow. Â "Yeah? Â Need a hand with anything?"
"Nah, it's just a lot of chopping and getting things delivered on time. Â I can manage it...I think."
"Fair enough. Â I'll go have a look and come back up this way if she's not there."
"Thanks Eli!" he called after her as she turned around and jogged back down the path.
She caught up to that same man from before on the way back; he'd stopped not too far from where she'd first passed him, and was sitting on a bit of broken stone off the side of the road watching her approach. Â With how he had his feet propped up she could see his brown leather boots were worn and had a few holes in them, and they matched his equally worn duster coat; the man himself also looked weathered and old.
"Hello again," she said as she came up.
"Hey," was the man's response.
When she got back to the house she did in fact find Selene working in her factory and let her know Dawa was looking for her. Â She got a sort of distracted, non-committal promise to go talk to him and then Eli left the builder to whatever it was she was piecing together and once again jogged up the path toward the tree farm.
The man was still sitting there; he'd taken his coat off and had it draped over the rock beside him. Â His clothes were baggy but were in considerably better condition than his coat and boots were.
"You stuck in a rut?" was the man's gravelly greeting as she jogged near him for a third time.
She laughed quietly. Â "Just playing messenger for a bit."
She heard him chuckling behind her as she kept going; it didn't take long to let Dawa know Selene would be along in a bit and then she continued on out to the facility. Â Down there it was easy to lose track of time and before she knew it it was early evening - far later than she'd actually intended to be down here...she REALLY needed to recreate a damn Hi-Def or, bare minimum, get a pocket watch or something.
At the very least the tourist man wasn't still sitting on his rock when she went by there again; she did spot him sitting at the nearest booth in the Round Table though, and offered him a nod when she thought he was looking her way. Â He didn't respond but that wasn't a big deal - at least no one could claim she wasn't friendly to strangers. Â
"Eli!"
She paused, halfway to a stool at the counter, and turned when she heard Arlo. Â He looked to be in better spirits and was waving her over to the table where he, Remington, Asher, and Petra were sitting together.
As she headed over Arlo slid to the side to make room for her on the end of the couch next to him and Petra shifted around to the other side; in the few seconds it took to cross the room and sit down Sonia had come over to the table for her order. Â Remington, Petra, and Asher all had half-finished drinks in front of them.
"Did you find that sensor thing you were looking for?" Asher asked as she sat down.
"Nope," she answered. Â "Granted, I didn't spend too much time looking for it though. Â Started in on tearing down the aux unit and making a list of what needs replacing. Â We're going to need an amp converter for sure but I'm fairly confident we can manage to make it work."
"That's good news," Petra said. Â "We already have the wind generator blueprints and have several up near South Block that are working just fine. Â If you can give us an idea of the power output that's needed we can see if we need to alter those blueprints."
"I'm still working on that. Â The main hitch is deciding what numbers to use and how to get them - we won't be using the same amount of power that the facility did in its hey day but I also don't know of any other number to use just yet. Â I might have to ask Stewart to set aside a week and just run everything from lights to toasters down there to see what consumption level it can even hit, then add some zeroes to account for potential future increases and then see what I get."
Petra nodded. Â "That makes sense. I just hope the wind coming down from the bluffs would be enough."
"Well, if its not sufficient then my backup plan was water turbines instead. Â There's that waterfall that's not too far away...biggest hurdle then would be waterproofing all the equipment."
At that Petra rubbed at her chin. Â "Water turbines and waterproofing... It might work so long as we can avoid altering Portia's water quality."
"Shouldn't be any different from the motorized boats I see out in the harbor with the exception that there won't be any fuel runoff in the equation," Eli replied. Â "That ought to make it pretty clean."
Further discussion was interrupted as Sonia and Django brought out all of their orders together and they got to eating; when they finished Petra and Asher excused themselves, paid, and headed out. Â As Remington ordered a second lemonade Eli subtly leaned toward Arlo.
"Did she come find you?" It was barely above a whisper, and neither Sonia nor Remington seemed to have heard it.
Arlo nodded. Â "She did. Â We worked it out. Â Still friends." Â His voice was equally as quiet.
Eli straightened and flashed him a brief smile - she didn't need details; she was just glad Nora had followed through and Eli wouldn't have to have that conversation in her stead.
"So..." Arlo said then, voice loud and clear. Â "I hear I missed learning what a burpee is."
--------------------------------------
The three of them ended up sitting and chatting for quite awhile, then moved on to the back room for a couple games of darts (Remington won every single game). Â As they'd stood and headed back Eli again nodded to the old man in the booth and this time got a half wave and smile in response. When they came out of the game room later the man was still there nursing a single coffee. Â He offered them a quiet good evening and was digging in his coat pocket for gols as they were filing out through the door.
"Any plans for tomorrow?" Arlo asked, as they stood together just beyond the edge of the extended patio roof outside of the Round Table.
"Sleeping, hopefully," Remington chuckled.
Eli shrugged. "Not really. Â I was thinking of seeing if Selene had a rod and reel I can borrow. Â I'm determined to see a live frog fish for myself - it's still so hard to wrap my head around the idea of bizarre animal hybrids."
"You should talk to Qiwa - I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you all about the native fish in this region," Remington said. Â "He's the one who usually wears purple, if that helps."
She considered that a moment, then nodded; on her To Do list was checking with the local school to see if they had books they could lend her on wildlife, geography, and cultures of the current time period but she kept forgetting about it until it was too late in the evening to catch anyone there. Â "Probably a good idea. Â I need to start making time to learn about the world as it is, instead of focusing on telling everyone on how it was." Â She paused for a breath then looked to Arlo. Â "If you'd like to make up for today I'll have time tomorrow."
"Sounds good. Â In the morning, as usual?"
"Works for me. Â See you tomorrow," she said, smiling and heading off.
The lights were still on in Selene's factory - had she ever gone to talk to Dawa? Â Eli hoped so. Â Inside the house it was quiet; Eli took a quick bath and tiptoed into her room wrapped in just a towel. Â Her pajamas were not on the edge of her bed though, which where she swore she'd left them this morning. Â Maybe she'd overshot the edge when she'd tossed them there? Â As she came around to the other side of the bed to check she saw a strange pink lump partially sticking out from under the bedskirt, and under it was a single pajama pantleg.
She reached out with one bare foot, grabbed the pantleg fabric with her toes, and pulled; sliding out from under the bed came the biggest, roundest, pinkest cat she'd ever seen. Â It was lounging on top of her pajamas and seemed not at all disturbed by the fact it had been dragged out of its little hiding spot.
"...excuse me, who are you and also I need those." Â Eli had to let the towel flap open as she bent down to roll the rather sausage-shaped cat off her clothing; when she had retrieved the pajamas she dropped the towel over the animal and heard a rather confused "mrrp" noise from under it.
Selene hadn't mentioned that she owned a cat, much less a neon pink one.
The world was a very weird place nowadays.

Date Night (Final Rose AU Snippet)
Note: Set in the same Averia x Yang AU as Experiment.
X Â Â X Â Â X
"Do you really think they believe weâre actually investigating the local area for signs of Grimm?â Yang asked as she watched Averia bend over to rummage through her backpack. It was a wonderful view. Averia looked great all the time, but she looked fantastic without any clothing on.
The pink-haired girl straightened and gave Yang an amused look. âProbably the only one who believes that is Ruby. I think the others are all fairly sure weâve gone off to screw each otherâs brains out.â She paused. âAlthough in fairness, we did scout the area for signs of Grimm before getting to the aforementioned screwing.â
Yang snickered, and then groaned. Laughing was slightly painful. She had, once again, encouraged Averia to be as enthusiastic as possible. Averia had been more than happy to comply, and Yang had been happier still. Of course, nothing was perfect. As incredible as Yang had felt not too long ago, her body was now making its aggravation known. Apparently, being taken on just about every available surface and piece of furniture wasnât good for her back. Who could have known? Oh well. Totally worth it.
âYeah, you might be right about that. Iâm half convinced that Ruby still believes in the Cookie Fairy.â
âThe Cookie Fairy?â Averia raised one eyebrow. Yang gave her a lazy wave from the bed, and Averia gave a melodramatic sigh before she came back to give Yang her mandatory post-coital cuddle. âWhat is the Cookie Fairy?â
âBasically, itâs something dad came up with. Since Ruby loved cookies so much, he said that good girls get a visit from the Cookie Fairy who gives them cookies for every good deed theyâve done.â
âHow old was Ruby when he told her that?âÂ
Yang shivered as Averia stroked her side. It was crazy to think that despite how sore her body was and how much theyâd already done, she was already eager to do more. Maybe she really was addicted. Her lips twitched. Addicted? Did that mean she could die of an overdose of Averia? Maybe. But what a way to go. She could already see it now:Â
Here lies Yang, dead from multiple orgasms. 11/10. Would die like that again.
âShe was seven.â Yang couldnât help it. The thought of her imaginary tombstone was too much, and she began to snigger.
âWhat?â Averiaâs caress turned into a gentle poke. âI know that laugh. Youâre thinking something stupid again.â
âI have never had a single stupid thought in my life,â Yang retorted. âIâll have you know Iâve been tested. Iâm well above average in intelligence.â
Averia rolled her eyes. âYang, have you forgotten whoâs in my family? My aunt and my sister are both simultaneously the smartest people in the world and the stupidest people in history. You can be a genius and an idiot at the same time.â
âHmmm...â Yang laughed. âI suppose, youâre not wrong. Diana did build that death ray last week to help get rid of the weeds growing in between the bricks in one of the gardens at Beacon.â
âShe insists on calling it an anti-life beam since it doesnât affect anything that isnât alive, which, she claims, makes it perfect for slaughtering weeds while leaving the bricks undamaged.â Averia looked heavenward. âIâm just waiting for her to start equipping robots with it since it reduces the risk of friendly fire.â She poked Yang again. âBut you still havenât told me what youâre laughing about.â
Yang told her.
âReally?â Averiaâs lips twitched. âYou think that would be a great way to die.â
âWell,â Yang said. âIâve basically decided that there are three ways I wouldnât mind dying.â
Averia stared. âKeep going... Iâm morbidly curious to know more about how your mind works. Did you know Saviour has you filed under âderangedâ in its psychological categorisation folder?â
âI take offence to that. Iâm not deranged. In fact, I happen to think Iâm very charming.â
Averia looked very pointedly at Yangâs naked form. âSome parts of you are definitely charming.â
Yang gave her a gentle bonk over the head. âDonât be rude. Anyway, back to what I was saying. So... three ways to die. First of all, I figure I might actually make it to old age. I wouldnât mind dying as an old lady with plenty of family around me. I could spoil my grandkids rotten and then send them back to my kids loaded with sugar and hunting stories.â
âYou are a terrible human being.â Averia gave her a flat look. They both knew what happened when kids got hyped up on sugar and stories of fighting Grimm. Disaster. âBut that might be part of your charm.â Averia again gave Yangâs body a pointed look. âAmongst other things.â
âHmm...?â Yangâs lips curled. âAre you saying you only like me for my body?â She covered her face with one hand. âOh, woe is me, to serve as nothing more than a vessel for your ruthless and utterly insatiable lust and depravity.â
âDepravity?â Averia leaned forward, lips almost touching Yangâs. âYang, youâre the one who comes up with most of crazier stuff we do, not that I mind.â Her green eyes narrowed. âRemember that brilliant idea of yours involving the kitchen counter, every ice cream topping you could think of, and the sort of gymnastics that even I struggle with? Yeah. We almost ended up in the hospital because of you.â
âAre you saying you didnât enjoy it?â Yang asked teasingly.
âIt was fantastic,â Averia replied promptly. âAnd you were incredible. But that doesnât mean youâre not crazy although I suppose youâre my crazy.â
âYour crazy, huh?â Yang couldnât help the surge of warmth that ran through her at the words. âBut, yeah, living to a bazillion and becoming that awesome grandma figure is one way I wouldnât mind going. The second way, well, I kind of figured Iâd die covered in glory fighting a whole heap of Grimm. You know, bodies piled up around me so high that Iâm basically wading through the corpses of my enemies.â Averia said nothing for a moment, and Yang realised that her expression had, just for an instant, gone completely blank. âAveria?â
âYou are not dying like that.â Averiaâs arms tightened around her. âItâs not happening.â
âUh... you know I was just joking around, right?â Yang found it hard to meet Averiaâs gaze. Her eyes were filled the sort of ruthless determination she normally only saw when Averia was about to call on Saviour. âRight?â
âIt doesnât matter if you were joking or not. Youâre not dying like that.â Averia made a face. âItâs not happening. Not ever.â
âOkay.â Yang relaxed in Averiaâs embrace. Averia knew that Yang could take care of herself, so it wasnât often that the âoverprotective psychoâ part of her personality came out, but it was, in some ways, gratifying to know it was still there. âAnd, well, you already know the third way.â
âDeath by multiple orgasms, huh?â Averia pressed a kiss to Yangâs cheek. âYou do realise that isnât likely to happen, right?â
âOh? Do enlighten me.â
âItâs fairly simple,â Averia said, and Yang bit back a smile as she found herself on her back with Averia straddling her waist. âSimply put, you would almost certainly pass out before dying of cardiac arrest.â
âIs that so?â
âYang, I have copious quantities of data about how your body responds to pleasure.â Averia shifted, running her hands along Yangâs sides and bending down to press her lips to Yangâs collarbone. âYou are, in many ways, highly predictable.â
âI am?â Yang was only mildly annoyed that her voice trembled when Averiaâs lips moved from her collarbone to her chest and then down to her belly.
âYes, you are.â Averia lingered, hands reacquainting themselves with the full, welcome weight of Yangâs chest before she moved to kneel between Yangâs thighs, the blondeâs legs draped over her shoulders. âYou basically go through several stages.â
âAnd what would those - ah! - be?â Yang managed to force the words out as Averiaâs hands cupped her bottom and lifted her up, so she could press her lips to Yangâs womanhood.Â
It was several moments before Averia replied, and when she did, Yang almost wanted to curse herself for asking a question. It was criminal how good Averia was at this. Then again, this was what she got for asking Averia to essentially optimise sex. She knew exactly how to touch Yang, and she had zero qualms about seeing how quickly she could bring Yang to climax and how many times she could get her there, to say nothing of her constant attempts to improve just how long she could keep Yang in a state of bliss.
âThe first is begging,â Averia replied. âYou always beg me for more, Yang. Always.â
âI do not beg.â Yang glared, or tried to.
âReally?â Averia smirked. âLetâs find out.â
Less than two minutes later, Yang was indeed begging.
âOh, shut up,â Yang groaned. âYouâre evil.â
âIâm right.â Averia slipped Yangâs legs off her shoulders, and the blonde almost wept with frustration. âBut your begging comes in two flavours, Yang. Weâve already gotten to the bit where you beg me for more.â
âYouâre a real jerk sometimes. You know that - ah!â
Averiaâs smile was almost cruel as she drew her hand back and then thrust her fingers into Yang again. The blonde convulsed, back arching, at the hard, deep penetration. âBut after you beg me for more, thereâs the bit where you beg me to stop because you canât take anymore.â
Yang tried to must a scowl. She failed.
Averia leaned forward, fingers twisting inside Yang. âBut the funny thing is, you can take more. For instance...â
Yang did end up taking more. A lot more.Â
Twitching weakly and only barely conscious, Yang was only vaguely aware of her surroundings. What she was aware of, however, was Averiaâs voice as the other huntress whispered in her ear.
âAnd hereâs the part where youâre totally helpless and at my mercy.â Averiaâs fingers were still inside Yang, not moving much, but enough to send echoes of pleasure through her as a deeper ache began to build inside her. âNow, sometimes, Yang, you pass out here. And thatâs fine. Itâs always great falling asleep beside you once weâre finished. But with a bit of effort and the right sort of stimulation...â
Yangâs eyes widened slightly as Averia moved against her.
âI can make sure you donât pass out, and that means we get to see just how much more you can take.â Averia smiled. âAnd thatâs where the fun really begins.â
Later, much later, Yang was staring up at the ceiling. âAm I dead?â she asked.
Averia chuckled and licked her fingers clean. âNo. But I think Iâve made my point. Any amount of pleasure great enough to kill you would almost certainly make you pass out first. Short of using Saviour to prevent that from happening -â
âWait... you can do that?â
âYang,â Averia said seriously. âI am not joking. You pass out for a reason. Using Saviour to override your bodyâs ability to self-regulate might actually make it possible to kill you with orgasms. I would rather not have that happen.â
â...â Yang made a weak attempt at grabbing Averia. âYour Semblance is bullshit, you know that, right?â
âIâm told that quite frequently.â Averia chuckled. âBut I mean it. I am not going to kill you with orgasms. Not happening.â
âAww...â Yang yawned. âPlease tell me we donât have to go anywhere else tonight?â
âWeâre fine. I told the others weâd need at least until tomorrow afternoon to be thorough.â
âTomorrow afternoon, huh?â
âYang, you can barely keep your eyes open, and youâre already thinking about doing more?â
âIâm thinking about doing you?â Yang grinned toothily. âYouâve been focused so much on me today. Iâd like to return the favour.â
âI see.â Averia patted Yangâs side. âWell, youâd best get some rest then because I expect you to be at your very best tomorrow morning.â

The next evening...
Ruby looked at her sister. âDid something happen while you were scouting for Grimm?â Her eyes widened. âWait! You must have run into some really strong ones, right? Donât keep it a secret! Tell us all about them!â
Weiss covered her face with one hand. âRuby, I donât think thatâs why your sister is limping.â

Authorâs Notes
People seem pretty fond of the Averia/Yang pairing, so I thought Iâd throw something new together for it. They do have good chemistry together, and I will say that dialogue between them comes along pretty naturally.
