Counting Dragons by tsukinofaerii (on ao3) is an absolutely classic Strifehart fic that I still think about often to this day.

It's based off of a series of fantasy novels about people getting to ride dragons (awesome) but are trapped in a weird sexgendered social hierarchy that informs their view on said things (less awesome). They’re controversial for misogyny and the bioessentialism inherent in misogyny but I read them when I was like 9 (WAY TOO YOUNG) and thus have a complicated relationship with them.

I don’t have a complicated relationship with this fic though, because it is awesome. While you can tell the author originally planned for there to be more to it, it has such a richness to its portrayal of the world & characters. Leon in it is *chefs kiss* in my professional opinion, but the KH characters are fun and lovely as well.

There’s something really delicious about the way Leon and Cloud interact in this fic, it’s like peak pining Strifehart to me; they talk in code and innuendos, barely look each other in the eye. Can’t say exactly what they mean, every touch is breathtaking and fleeting. It’s so good.

I also have to give props to the author for finding DEEPLY creative ways to make the KH characters names fit into Pern’s established naming conventions. (Saora and Raoxas and Zakth and Cl’oud. Ugh it’s so good. It’s so fun.)

Plus Zack is Cloud’s goddamn dragon. What more do you need in a fic really.

Fax it Straight to his Heart by modeoheim (on ao3) is. Like okay. Listen. I’m not usually a fan of AGSZC. But this fic is so fucking funny.

The way to do a modern AU I like is to make it funny, it seems. This fic is one I return to a lot because it’s hysterical. There’s, like, a specific kind of Cloud I really enjoy, and that’s when he’s a beleaguered overworked retail/office worker that hates life and everyone he works with and this fic hits that Right in the sweet spot.

This fic is good because everyone else in it is so unrepentantly absolutely bonkers that Cloud is an entirely necessary grounding force. These four guys are sending love notes and fucking on their desks and arguing about raccoons in their trashcans and Cloud is just. Some guy. Trapped in a powerful hell. With no means of escape.

I love it when fics outside of the FFVII canon have Cloud and Sephiroth have some kind of utterly incomprehensible physical altercation because it’s funny and it’s meta and I can’t tell you the details because You Are Going To Read This Fic but the way this fic goes about Cloud being chased and caught is something I think about all the time.

Plus Cloud spends the whole thing posting on Twitter. What more do you need in a fic really.

How to Break a Deal With the Devil by ohmyfae (on ao3) is… a fic that I cherish. If I’m having a shitty day, this is the fic I read.

There is something extremely confronting and challenging about Prompto in this fic. I actually know that you, personally, would really enjoy Prompto in this fic. He is deeply socially alienated and mistreated in ways that are so intense they’re borderline comical and still he GRIPS onto kindness in an iron fucking clenched fist and he will NOT let that kindness go.

People are awful to him and he isn’t awful back. And it’s not because he’s naive, or something. He just. Chooses to be kind, always. He deliberately empathizes with his own tormentors. In a way, he dodges victimhood by understanding he is no better than them. He’s just unlucky.

It’s really cathartic, then, to watch Prompto find someone who cares about him, will defend him, will help him and love him and always always care for him. It’s even more cathartic to watch the empty shell that is Prompto come alive at the attention, and take the world by fucking storm as soon as he’s given the okay to.

There’s this moment towards the end where he’s finally just blunt with someone about how awful they are to him and it makes me feel like a human again every single time.

Plus Prompto has cool red eyes. What more do you need in a fic really.

In the light of cannon being insane and hurting our hearts this weekend, regardless of which theory you’re believing or whichever way this storyline actually goes I’m going to share my longest most ploty 911 family feel AU fics. Obviously buddie is the main ship in them all cos that’s how I roll. Honestly I’m done being reticent about my writing- I’m good, I might not write the usual kind of things but and I write good stories better than certain people who get paid to screw up my show’s storylines.

Take a risk try something different, can it be any worse than plague cured rats helicopter chases and empty caskets?

I would very much enjoy your take on Tortall IN SPACE :D Though once I think about it for two seconds, you’d probably want to do something more interesting with the whole women can’t be knights thing…maybe Alanna and Kel are ALIENS? Put some xenoanthropolgy in there! Pick up the dropped Old Ones thread and make it way less racist! Idk the possibilities abound.

Okay this is not the version I would write but to start I must ask how there hasn't been a Pern AU for this fandom yet. It practically writes itself! Alanna disguises herself and impresses a bronze dragon! When she eventually admits she's a woman there's a scandal! Thayet impresses a queen and usually Jon's Weyrleader but when he sends Kally off to impress a queen at a different weyr Alanna ends up Weyrleader for one very awkward period! And everyone's just barely used to Alanna and then Kel up and impresses a BROWN.

For me, though, I think I'd go for something original rather than a fusion with another canon--and for me, here, I think the most fun place to start is by considering how to translate the fantasy elements over! So we've got immortals, we've got gods, and we've got the Gift.

Immortals are, of course, aliens. A few hundred years ago, in a period where many kinds of aliens were preying on human settlements, a group of scientists figured out how to put a barrier up around the planet's atmosphere that can prevent aliens from getting in, so people know they're out there, but they're mostly theoretical. The planet's safe from the invaders! Surely this state of things will not change!

I think the gods are a network of ascended AI satellites tasked with monitoring the barrier who also get up to playing some chess with people, beaming down images of themselves in humanoid forms to talk with the mortals.

And then the Gift pretty much has to be psionics? Mind powers aren't trendy in sci fi these days which I think is a dreadful tragedy actually, so we're getting them here. And I think that knighthood is people trained to pilot high-atmospheric craft to patrol the barrier (though the knights probably also fight each other in tourneys and wars and stuff, you know how knights are), and that the Gift can be dangerous for that, psionic powers can cause problems for the barrier, so instead of pretending to be a man in training, Alanna is pretending not to have the Gift.

I'm not sure what's up with Kel here! Or Daine, for that matter, this system doesn't bring wild magic into it. I'd have to ponder it more. But by then the barrier is down anyway.

OOC: So about all this radio silence

Things have been pretty crazy here at home, I'm not even going to lie. There are several things I'm dealing with behind the scenes, including some changes to the setup of my job, which makes it harder for me to be online at night like I used to be.

Couple this with a feeling I've had lately that I just can't shake: Tumblr has been getting quieter and quieter in general. I used to scroll my dash and read all the threads my mutuals used to have with each other. Following the stories that told of so many adventures.

I love being able to see the characters going out and just having fun. But lately, I barely see threads on my dash. The stories just aren't there. I see a lot of posts about the characters, but hardly any drabbles or things that really spark my own inspiration.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I feel like there's something missing here that likely has been for awhile and I've just been in denial about it. I'm not planning to go anywhere but I'm not sure how this will effect my activity moving forward. I might still only really reply to threads and maybe think about posting some opens once in awhile to see if I can get others interested in writing, but at this point I think I'm rambling.

And if that's the case. I might as well ramble some more about the book series I've gotten into thanks to Faewild over at @hylian-riders

Recently started listening to the audiobook versions of the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. While I've been listening, I've come up with a bit of an AU for Volt and Harmony based on the book series, and I have debated bringing that over here to Tumblr as a way to bring me back to writing once more on this site. I'm gonna stew on it a lil bit longer on if I will do it or not.

Last Song You Played: 'Flying Waters - Goblu', from the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 soundtrack. Pretty much every track I've heard in this game so far has been fantastic, but this one in particular is such an unusual, striking battle theme. I was listening to it on repeat while doing the washing-up.

Currently Reading: All the Weyrs of Pern by Anne McCaffrey, from the Dragonriders of Pern series. On a recent visit to my parents' house, I found myself looking at some of my old Pern books, thinking about how much I'd loved the series when I was a kid. I flipped one open out of nostalgic curiosity and went from 'idly skimming' to 'ravenously devouring'.

I don't think I actually read All the Weyrs of Pern when I was a kid! At the age of twelve or thirteen, I was mainly into the 'mediaeval-style society with dragons' aspect and slightly resented the introduction of higher technology to Pern. As an adult, though, I'm fascinated by the 'mediaeval-style society discovers an intelligent computer' concept. It doesn't hurt that it reminds me of Horizon Zero Dawn, one of my favourite games.

Currently Watching: Various things here and there, but I'm most consistently watching Taskmaster (UK, NZ and AU) with my housemates, which is always a lot of fun. I was watching and enjoying Dexter earlier in the year, but I lost momentum in season three and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to regain it. I'm struggling with the ill-advised temptation to rewatch Merlin and/or Supernatural. Still need to watch the second season of Arcane, too!

Currently Playing: This wasn't on the original question list, but I'm going to add it because I can. I'm currently playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a gorgeous and polished game in just about every respect, and The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, a ludicrous child soldier simulator that feels like what happens when you've almost finished making your game and you accidentally drop it in a barrel of fanfiction. I'm having a blast with both of them, but in very different ways.

Currently Craving: I want to write something! I've been itching to write, but unfortunately the words just won't come.

Coffee or Tea: I don't drink tea or coffee, but I know how to make a cup of tea; it's a near-essential skill for functioning in British society. Hot chocolate is my preferred hot drink, but mostly I just drink water.

Hmm... I've been kicking around a harringrove Dragonriders of Pern AU in my head for a while now. It was like my very first fandom, and I have Thoughts (I feel like I would have to reacquaint myself with the source material though, which... does revisiting stuff you loved in middle school ever go well 😅) and yeah, I feel like Pern is pretty niche these days?

He gasps awake on a cold slab, which isn’t ideal.

He's never actually made it to a morgue before. He woke up in the back of an ambulance once. Scared the shit out of the paramedic, had to fight his way past him to skedaddle without answering any awkward questions, like ‘Hey! Weren’t you dead a second ago?’

At least that guy got a great cocktail party story out of it, probably thinks Billy was on angel dust.
