the dimensions of a college football field are 300×160 feet. the hashes are 60 feet from each sideline and there are 40 feet between them.

if you want to line a blank field from the side one 20 to the side two 20, from the front sideline to the back hash, the dimensions will be 180 by 100 feet

to do this, take a big tape measure and measure out 180 feet to where you want the front sideline, paint it, mark yardlines.

take a tape measure, reel out 225 feet, place one end on the 20 (the corner) and the other on the 45. hold the tape measure at the 125 feet mark, pull back until taut. you will be standing at the end of a right triangle, 100 feet from the corner. paint this line. do the same for the other side. then paint a line between the ends of these two lines. you now have the 180×100 foot box.

next, paint the yardlines. then paint the front hashes on every yardline, 60 feet from the sideline.

then, on each (or every other) yardline, paint a tick with a new colour every 7.5 feet, or four steps. this will line up with the front hash, but your last tick will be 2.5 feet (or 1.33 steps) short of the back hash.

The marching band in my school has a section of the parking lot that has football yardlines painted on it so that they can practice during football season, when the team was always taking up the field. The concept is simple. If the band needs that section for practice, they put barriers in the entrances so people can't park there.

The problem, as ever, is that people are stupid. They move the barriers, or break the tape they put across later, so there's always someone parked in the band field. Usually they drive off after school, so it's okay, but enough people have after school activities that sometimes there's still a car or two.

So one practice there was a single car in the lot, and the band still had room, they would just have to do practice 5 yards over, doing the math on every single movement. Thing is, these guys carry around big metal things all the time.

They picked up the car and moved it.

A different time, all the band kids parked in the entrances to make a barrier that couldn't be moved.

Band kids have the ideas and execution to make all our lives living hell, and they are using it for good. How lucky are we.
