The “Altaïr gets a cult (but nobody cares about that) and gets lots of cats against his will” idea and the “Malik and Altaïr bickers like an old married couple” side-idea with its sorta sequel “Ezio breaks down and starts doubting every cat he sees” idea.

“I have met with them.” Ezio said with the tired tone of a man who had seen god and returned with nothing but a new cape that did not even match any of his usual attire.

Antonio’s lips curved into an amused smile as he asked blithely, “Quite the eccentric trio, are they not? I find it is better to deal with Malik than the twins.”

Twins.

Is that what they believe Altaïr and Desmond were?

He had spent two hours, perhaps three, with them and the two acted more like Desmond was a child to be coddled and looked after. It didn’t remind him of how he and his siblings interacted with Petruccio though. Altaïr and Malik both worried and cared for Desmond as if they were afraid he would shatter in front of them.

Sometimes, Ezio wondered if Desmond’s serene look at everything, even in the face of danger and death, was a sign of something more concerning.

But it was not his place to say anything.

“Altaïr has a lot of interesting opinions.” Ezio said instead.

And plans.

One of which was to take over their cul- Brotherhood and reinstate the “no close relationship with any powerful faction” rule that Ezio had never even heard about.

Desmond had whispered to him that King Richard the Lionheart actually tried to develop a close relationship with the Brotherhood but Altaïr had ‘dumped’ him, whatever that meant.

Ezio supposed that his recounting of how close the Auditore was with the Medici prompted this entire thing. Before that, Altaïr had seemed reluctant to take his rightful place as their mentor. Ezio wasn’t even sure if his uncle would like what was about to happen.

“I’ve actually come here to ask a favor on their behalf.” Ezio said with a sigh, making Antonio raise an eyebrow.

“And is that favor connected to the cats that followed you here and have been staring at us?” Antonio asked lightly even though Ezio could see the wary (and fear?) in his eyes as he glanced at the cats lounging on the roof, peering over them.

“Ah, yes. Forgive me for the late introduction…” Ezio turned to acknowledge the four cats as he said, “The black one is… I cannot remember her name but Desmond told me I can call her Ziio. The black and white one is Achilles. The grey and brown one is Maria. And the white and orange one is Clay.”

Among the four, only the one called Clay meowed, as if greeting back.

“They’re here to… support me.”

According to Desmond anyway.

While they all seemed to follow Altaïr back to their home, it seemed Desmond was the one who talked to them the most and named them.

“They are connected to the favor I wish to ask.” Ezio said and decided to just push through so he could get it over with, “They have decided to travel to Monteriggioni to talk to my uncle.”

And usurp him if the need arises, apparently.

Desmond was quite happy to tell Ezio their plan even though he knew that they were talking about his uncle.

Of course, we’re not going to kill anyone. Especially not Zio Mario!

The easy way Desmond called his uncle ‘zio’ made Ezio confused of their actual blood connection.

But everything about Desmond was a mess of confusion and worry. Altaïr calling Desmond his ‘child’ (said in a jest perhaps?) did not help at all.

“They need someone to take care of the cats while they are gone.” Ezio continued, “Just to feed them and make sure they have ample clean water every day. Perhaps clean any messes they make while playing inside. Desmond assured me that they take care of their ‘business’ outside or in the garden, behind the bushes…”

Antonio stared at him for a moment.

“Would you happen to know anyone who wouldn’t mind taking care of their-” army of “cats?”

“Will you be joining them in their travels?” Antonio asked and Ezio shook his head.

“We decided it would be better if I did not. I do not want my uncle to make a mistake and believe I have any part of this.” Ezio sighed.

The most he had done was explain the current state of the Brotherhood (although Desmond seemed to know about it, now that he thought about it). He didn’t have any hand on their plans or their decisions.

“Then it seems to me you already found the best person to take care of the cats!” Antonio said cheerfully as he patted Ezio’s shoulder.

Ezio blinked.

Ah.

He supposed Antonio was right.

For once…

Ezio wished he was being chased all over by guards.

Now it's Persona-l: Escapism and Freedom in Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Persona 5

On the surface, Tokyo Mirage Sessions seems about as Diet Persona™ as a game can get. With a cast of colourful teens out to save the world using their Stands Persona  Performa, some critique of our society, and the same amount of clueless running around Shibuya, it would be easy to write the game off as a quick cash-grab by their respective studios. But when giving TMS another look, you might be surprised at the depth that lurks beneath the pastel-coloured waters. Today we’ll be taking a deep dive into two specific themes that persist across both games.

For those who somehow missed an originally Wii-U exclusive JRPG which didn’t include the Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei tags in its title, Tokyo Mirage Sessions: FE is a collaboration between Atlas and Intelligent Systems to bring a little Fire Emblem flavour to the familiar Zio-spamming recipe of the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series. The game follows Itsuki Aoi, a nineteen-year-old with dark blue hair who has therefore been recognised by the universe itself as the main character. He discovers his ability to summon a Performa— a Fire Emblem character turned to a Persona – and joins up with other Performa users to battle mirages (i.e Shadows), pursuing their dreams and growing stronger as they do. It’s a setup that requires no further introduction if you’ve ever picked up an Atlas game before. They have a rightful confidence in this formula that allows them to focus on refinement and improved storytelling, the benefits of which absolutely shine in Persona 5.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions predates its more successful cousin by two years, but I argue we see the same brilliant attention to detail, themes and realism across both, and nowhere is this more apparent than in how both games handle freedom and escapism. For those still working through these eighty-hour behemoths, not to worry! There are spoilers for the first few story dungeons and other aspects, but not the endings of the games.

The two player teams present an interesting dichotomy, partly because of how similar they seem on the surface. Take their publicity situation. Posters of the Phantom Thieves’ logo plaster every building in P5, and Shibuya 106 is always displaying posters of Kiria or Tsubasa’s newest production— a very nice touch for TMS’s story, considering how much focus is placed on the nitty-gritty, mechanical aspects of building a career in performing. But there is one key distinction. While neither group is recognised for their heroic work in the Metaverse or Idolasphere respectively, the names Kiria Kurono, Tsubasa Oribe and Mamori Minamoto have gathered everything from a cult following to a full-blown fan frenzy. This has fascinating ripples throughout the rest of the story that feel fully considered by the writers.

Within the P5 cast up to Okumura’s Palace, many members join the Phantom Thieves because they feel backed into a corner. In Joker’s case, the corner is very literal. For Ann and Makoto, they could, in a purely technical sense, do the bidding of the villain and escape physically unharmed, but nobody in their right mind would suggest submitting to Kamoshida or Kaneshiro is a good idea. Imagery of imprisonment is everywhere, through promotional art and cutscenes and every line of dialogue. But this imprisonment is rarely a physical thing. Even in the literal jail of the Velvet Room replaces one wall with a huge portal back to the real world, albeit obscured by the camera angle. Restrictions on the Phantom Thieves are often nebulous or even self-imposed, and I find it fascinating that their problems rarely evaporate after they awaken their Persona and gain a new outlook. While the pressures of society are given a face for each Thief, the writers never make the mistake of treating it as if these singular persons are the only issue— instead, they represent a wider imprisonment.

Conversely, the Mirage Masters don’t seem to face these same issues. Not to say they have no conflict, but there is a sense of freedom that permeates every aspect of the game. It’s an interesting approach; their lives aren’t ruined or ended by failure, but their dreams will crumble before them if they can’t push on in their professional journey, and the world will be worse off for the loss of talented creators to the mirages. The Idolasphere may not feel of much import. Obviously there are consequences to leaving it unchecked, otherwise there would be no driving plot force to have the characters enter at all. But the Idolasphere and its adventures seem to be an inconvenience to most of the TMS cast. They aren’t actively seeking out new Idolasphere locations, excitedly searching for new equipment and attempting to train their Performa in their off time, the way the Phantom Thieves do. These are driven young professionals, yes, perhaps with the exception of main character Itsuki Aoi. But not driven by anything the Idolasphere offers- they already have their career aspirations, and it isn’t to fight shadows mirages for the rest of their lives.

This is even reflected in gameplay. Where leaving the palace in Persona 5 ends your day and has you missing out on a limited timeslot, TMS allows the player to jump in and out of any Idolasphere location, at any time. You could say that this is because TMS lacks the limited time frame mechanic that appeared in all three modern Persona games, but I would say the lack of that day-by-day mechanic is, itself, another way to show the freedom the TMS cast enjoy.

For the Phantom Thieves, the metaverse is their escape. Even in official art, you can see the grins as they jump into action:

Regular life, for the Thieves, is a tedious Sisyphean battle, where they feel like they have little power and little control. The power of a Persona is one thing that elevates them, makes them special, in their minds, anyway. Right from the flash-forward at the start of the game, it’s clear that the world is hostile to them. While Joker bounces around with a grin on his face and heaps of style, crowds react to him with fear, scorn, and derision. This in spite of the fact he has seemingly done little more than nab a prize and disappear, in true phantom thief style. And when Joker is caught by the police, the prospect of the truth being discovered becomes more and more unsettling, the closer the Phantom Thieves grow to each other. Beside the criminal charges: Ryuji is separated from his single mother, Ann loses her career and support network, Morgana loses the only people who understand him, Makoto loses her best chance at individuality and self-expression. The world is out to get the Phantom Thieves, and if that happens, they lose everything. They won’t die, presumably, but their lives are likely to become hollow and empty. This again emphasises the idea of their imprisonment being a less tangible thing, hard to fight and much harder to escape from.

I could probably go on for another few pages but we’ll draw things to a close for now. Escapism has always been a less talked-about motif in Atlas games, rarely the ‘point’ of any one story, but it’s often there, an interesting compliment to the main theme. Persona 3 delves into mortality, and I believe escapism is a fascinating part of that, as a way to distract from it and try to live a happy life in spite of the inevitable end. Persona 4 focuses on finding the truth, despite a society that tries to force conformity, and they discover comfort and freedom by finding people who let them be their true selves. Persona 5 was merely the first game to push these themes into the spotlight. But let’s not forget the lesser-loved Atlas games, either! And hey, maybe if you see Tokyo Mirage Sessions on sale? Give it a go. I promise it’s pretty good.

So I’m reading the infernal devices again, y’know, as one does, and I’m getting all emotional and sad because will, jem, and tessa!! They were a tragedy not because they never got to love each other, but because they did get to be together. They were just separated from a part of themselves every time. that really just shatters me every time I read about wessa in tlh, or jessa in tda/twp content. And so I got to thinking.

what were the obstacles that stopped the three of them from being together? (barring societal expectations about heterosexual monogamy being the norm, and the three of them having inevitable hangups about being a Thing) i came up with three main things: Will and Jem were parabatai, Jem’s addiction, and Will’s curse. Now, the curse sort of resolved itself, so that leaves us the parabatai bond and the addiction.

and so I was heeing and hawing over the topic while in the shower, and then I very belatedly remembered just how Jem was cured in city of heavenly fire. (It’s been a while since I read tmi and the details are a bit fuzzy 😅) He got stabbed with glorious and the yin fen got burnt out of him! So, all we have to do is find a way to access heavenly fire in 1800s London and we’re golden.

here’s where my hopefully-a-stroke-of-genius-probably-just-lack-of-proper-nutrition brainwave comes into play. When we learned about the parabatai curse in the dark artifices, what happened to Emma and Julian and the end of qoaad? THEY BURNED WITH HEAVENLY FIRE. now, I wouldn’t just copy that plot line and have both Will and Jem both turn into twenty feet tall flaming hot Cheetos, because that’s boring. So I dug into what lore I could find with a lazy Google search and a five minute session of shuffling through my copy of qoaad, and apparently, true nephilim, (the aforementioned fiery giants if you didn’t know), were actually induced to defeat more powerful demons, though most died afterwards. Those who didn’t were grounded by parabatai, so they could return to their earthly form. So now, if we can get Jem to turn into a true nephilim, we can use Will to ground him, bring him back, and that’s the addiction solved! (I might have the fire burn out the parabatai bond like it did for jemma, so that’s be two birds with one stone— can’t have Jem and Will turning into giants again)

and here’s where things get a little hand-wavey, and I start to speculate, so definitely don’t take any of this as canon, though it isn’t technically canon divergent? Since they didn’t tell us much about how the ancient shadowhunters actually went about turning their buddies into demon killing infernos, I started to theorize. And then during my reread of city of bones, I come across clary’s introduction to seraph blades. As jace says, you don’t name a blade Raziel. Ever. why? They don’t really know. Y’know what else most, if not all, shadowhunters also didn’t really know? Why parabatai weren’t allowed to fall in love— it just wasn’t done. So logically, I could draw the conclusion that both reasons were unknown because they had both been covered up by the clave of long ago in the same way. Wait, zio, why are you going on about the curse and seraph blades? However could they be connected? I hear your chirpy voices in my ear.

because, my friends. what if. What if the Clave banned the naming of a seraph blade Raziel, because doing so would make you a true Nephilim? We know that they banned parabatai from falling in love because true nephilim were too powerful and dangerous, so it makes sense that the ”regular” method of turning shadowhunters into true nephilim would be covered up as well.

and thus, we have it. According to this funky little theory of mine, if Jem was to name a seraph blade Raziel, turn into a true Nephilim, and then return back to his body, both the addiction and the parabatai bond would be burned away and there you have it!! the possibility of herongraystairs in the nineteenth century without disregarding any significant canon lore!

I’ve been fiddling with this, and I’d like to turn it into a fic, but I still haven’t worked out a truly coherent plot beyond what I’ve slapped together here, and I kind of wanted to gauge interest, so please let me know what you guys think. If you see any holes or flaws in my thinking, please point them out— I’m always up to working my brain over, and I found it quite satisfying to come up with this little analysis !!

The papers were tossed on Tsuna’s table with a thump.

Used to the kind of treatment, Tsuna simply set aside the rest of his paperwork, arranging the mess into a neat pile. He left the papers which had been unceremoniously dropped onto his desk untouched and waited for the Varia boss to speak his mind.

Xanxus looked back at the man who had become Vongola Decimo. As he took in the hard set of the his shoulders and the permanent calm that he wore, the assassin no longer saw the kid who shrieked at everything that went bump in the night and who had not dared look him in the eye. The baby boss had grown so much over the years. Most of it not by choice.

“Zio,” Tsuna prompted.

They had all grown older.

Xanxus stood up and strode towards the drinks cabinet. He pulled out two glasses and spent a minute or two searching for a suitable drink. Tsuna waited patiently. Finally locating a bottle which pleased him, he brought the things over and poured a shot of whiskey for each of them.

He jerked his head towards the papers Tsuna had left unread. “We hunted down the last of the Baldinotti scum.”

Tsuna nodded slowly. It was a relief that they had been able to take down such a dangerous enemy. But it did not make the ache of loss hurt any less. He had thought he had known it after his trip to the Future-that-never-was, but that had never come close to the real thing. He watched as Xanxus slowly turned the glass in his hands.

The Varia boss seemed to be, for the first time that he had known him, hesitating about something.

“Is there anything else?” he asked softly.

Xanxus stared into his glass. After a moment or two, he threw back the shot and set it onto the table.

“I, Xanxus di Vongola, formally announce the intention of the dissolution of the Squadra killer autonoma di Vongola IX.”

Tsuna dropped his own glass in shock. It bounced off the table and emptied its contents into his lap, soaking his tie, shirt and slacks.

“Zio?” Tsuna whispered, feeling more than a little betrayed. “You’re leaving?”

Xanxus shook his head.

“It is time to retire the title. We will still remain Vongola’s independent assassination squad. We decided that there is no point in proclaiming loyalty to a dead man. Especially since we have always acted independently in the first place.”

“But zio - ”

“He was right you know?” Xanxus cut Tsuna off. “That it wouldn’t bloody change anything. That the pain would not lessen even after the satisfaction of crushing the fucking scum into the ground where they would rot.”

He let out a bitter laugh.

“That was the fucking reason I lead the Cradle.”

Tsuna jerked backwards, the facade of calm falling apart as he recalled the terrible experience he had endured during the mishap with the Ten Year Bazooka. He had realised that there was a lot more to the story of the Cradle Affair that no one knew. At the time he had never dared ask, and there hadn’t been an appropriate time to do so even after his relationship with Xanxus had improved. Guilt and shame had also played a part.

“I’d always known that I couldn’t be his child. Nobody takes a gutter rat and throws him into a mansion. The old fart had only been interested in my power. It gave him a convenient backdoor to protect his sons.”

Xanxus poured himself another shot. When all did Tsuna did was gape at him still, he scowled and tossed a handkerchief at his dumbstruck face. Tsuna shook the piece of cloth off his head and started to dab at his clothes futilely.

“For all I had disliked him, I loved my brothers. And if it meant I had to masquerade as a weak link to anyone trying to use me to get to the Vongola, well I still fucking did it.”

His eyes gleamed like rubies in firelight as they burned with the Flame of Wrath that he was known for.

“We had arranged everything, the diary and the trashed room, all so that we could smoke out the assassins trying to target the heirs. By then, Rico was the only one still alive. We knew some of the names of the famiglias behind them, but we were still missing some key players. I wanted to force the answers out of them, but Nono and Rico refused, ‘cause of fucking politics.”

Snarling, he chucked the glass at the wall where it shattered. “Fat lot of fucking good that did! They got to Rico anyway.”

Tsuna watched the alcohol stain the wallpaper. His mind spun as the pieces started to fall into place. Nono, Xanxus, and the three heirs had all known the truth. They had used Xanxus’ introduction into Vongola as a trap to identify those who would see his ambition and pride as an easy in to destroy the famiglia. The Varia boss had been their Trojan Horse. But he had also cared deeply about his brothers from his reaction, though his relationship with Nono seemed like it had never been very good in the first place.

“Even then, the bloody fool didn’t want to move against them. His hands were tied,” mocked Xanxus. “I decided that if the old fart didn’t have the guts to lead Vongola against those who attacked us again and again, I’d take it from him and do things the way it should’ve fucking been done in the first place.”

The penny dropped.

The coup had been Xanxus’ grab for power, not because he wanted the title of Decimo for himself, but because he’d wanted vengeance for his dead brothers.

Tsuna said slowly, “And Nono couldn’t have that.”

Xanxus slumped back into his chair, all the fight leaving him. He looked as if he had aged another 20 years in 2 seconds. Beneath the shadow of grief, Tsuna could see the 16-year-old boy who had only been allowed to watch as he had lost all his brothers one by one.

“No,” he sighed heavily. “It was probably for the best."

Tsuna stood quickly, his chair toppling over from the sudden motion. How could Xanxus say something like that?! Tsuna wouldn’t wish the agony of the Zero Point technique on anybody, not even his worst enemy!

“No!” he cried out, striding towards Xanxus and kneeling in front of him. “What he did was terrible! No one should have to go through that. No matter what!”

He grabbed his zio’s hand and pressed it against his forehead. Oh how he had wronged Xanxus. Both him and Nono.

“I’m so sorry,” he choked out. “I-I didn’t know what it was like, and I still did it to you. Twice!” He looked up at Xanxus and pleaded. “Forgive me.”

Xanxus stood, pulling Tsuna up to his feet, and rested a heavy hand on his shoulder. “There is nothing to forgive nipote. I don’t fucking doubt for one minute that it was not your idea. You were only making do with what you were told.”

He snorted amusedly, “If you hadn’t, I would’ve fucking killed you.”

Tsuna gave him a watery smile and huffed a small laugh. Yeah, his zio would’ve done that.

Xanxus tightened his grip on his nephew’s shoulder and reminded him gently, “Our decision is final. The title will be retired.”

Tsuna nodded solemnly. He would respect their wishes. Xanxus released his hold and turned to exit the room.

“Zio,” Tsuna called out, just as the Varia boss opened the door. “I’m sorry for your loss. We will all miss him.”

Xanxus turned to look at the Decimo.

“The man I might have considered a father had already died long ago,” he replied quietly, before shutting the door behind him.

Coding Competitions For Kids & Teenagers

Computer Science has literally changed the world forever in the last 30 years. And coding for kids has actually become as essential as mathematics for kids in today’s world. It is probably appreciated a bit more because it enforces kids to learn mathematics practically, while mathematics itself sometimes most of us don’t learn practically at school. Today, kids all across the world are learning coding and there are many kids coding competitions running all round the calendar year.

Here is a list of a few coding competitions for primary and secondary grade children around the world.

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) doesn’t need any new introduction as it is the ultimate coding and computer-science competition for children. This Olympiad is conducted along with other olympiads such as the Mathematics Olympiad and the Physics Olympiad. Details of this competition and the syllabus covered for this contest are mentioned in this post.

Zonal Informatics Olympiad (ZIO) and Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) level 1 and level 2 exams for India Coding Olympiad and for the final selections of IOI from India. More information on these exams are mentioned in this post.

International Kids Coding Competition (IKCC) conducts a range of kids coding competitions in various programming languages and platforms and across both world-wide and regional levels.

Canadian Computing Summer Contest (CCSC – Grades 3-12) The CCSC is a competition for students across the globe to provide an opportunity to showcase their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. There is a focus on Python in this competition but the languages accepted could change every year.

The American Computer Science League (ACSL)  is an international coding competition among over 300 schools in the US for grades K-12. Competitions occur online throughout the year and consist of four contests. Each contest consists of a written section to analyse code and a programming section.

UnicMinds Coding Competition is our own coding competition in Scratch and Python block based coding. Children of ages 8-14 across the world can participate in this online coding competition and win prizes and certificates. A series of 20-25 questions to be answered under one hour by kids attending the respective competing categories.

Bebras Computing Challenge tests students of 6-18 years age group on various computational problems and puzzles and with grade based questioning. NASA’s App Development Challenge is a coding challenge in which NASA presents technical problems to middle and high school students seeking student contributions to deep space exploration missions. By responding to the ADC, students take a part directly in the Artemis Generation endeavours to land American astronauts, including the first woman and first person of colour on the Moon. Grades: 9-12

The Congressional App Challenge is a prestigious competition designed to encourage creativity. Students create and submit an app using any programming language and about any theme or topic they choose. To get ready for the challenge, we recommend your child completes app development, game development and web development courses ( HTML/CSS/Javascript). Then they can join our Congressional App Challenge Mentoring Classes to build their project for the challenge from end to end, guided by our experienced teachers. Grades: 6-12

The Young Coders Competition is a coding contest in Scratch for young children attending school in certain parts of Europe such as Scotland and Ireland. 

Hong Kong International Coding Olympiad (HKICO) is a regional coding in South Asia. It tests on problem solving skills and algorithmic skills in informatics and computer science.

Design Championship Online is a coding competition in India for kids 6-16 years old. The competitions are held regionally first  in many age-group and programming categories such as App Design, Game Design, Web Design, Movie Making, and others. Then the national level selections happen for the finals.

There could be many kids coding challenges and competitions in individual countries that we probably couldn’t cover. But, you get the idea that today there are many coding competitions for children to prepare for and make a mark for themselves and learn from these opportunities.

[ A brief introduction to Idamdra: the human form was the vessel of choice from the worlds’ guardians. In the Aitareya Upanishad, Idamdra is “He who sees” the Lord, and it is said: “The name Indra stands for Idamdra.” ]

Name: Currently N/A.  (Since the root “idam” means “to see,” it will most likely center around that aspect/theme. Brand names also tend to come from natural phenomena or catastrophes, which leads me to thinking about the eye of a storm. Unfortunately, I don’t find “eye” or “eyewall” very catchy of a Brand name, so it’s left to be determined.

For Avatar’s appearance:

The figure used is Indra’s body shape, to connect them as a singular—but different—unit, but without the plates/armor. The vajra is also excused, creating a symmetrical silhouette, but the discs remain: 2 per foot, but 1 per each hand (centered, retract farther back, possibly extending into the forearm while at rest, but that would restrict wrist movement); the helmet remains* to represent Sahasrara. Vintage '86 Wilier Triestina "Ramato" Restoration

Clean 1986 Wilier \"Ramato\" frameset

Hi all,

Thought you might appreciate this photo of the 1986 Wilier Triestina “Ramato” road bike that I’m restoring for my wife. It was an attic-find that belonged to her uncle, Zio Dino, who’s in his 90s now. It’s definitely seen a hard life, with lots of scratches and paint chips and was very filthy when I found it. However, it cleaned up amazingly! This photo barely does it justice. The copper colour ('ramata' in Italian) finish is almost iridescent and the chrome Campagnolo parts still look brilliant after over 30 years. I'm kind of jealous that I won't be able to ride it since the frame is 52 cm and I'd need a 60 or 62 cm to be comfortable.

For those of you interested, I’m making the restoration into a video series on YouTube. Links to the introduction and clean & disassembly videos.

And I would appreciate any advice or info about this model and restoration. Cheers!
