One of the hardest things to accept about a fallen hero or a villain with ambiguous morals is that they are neither good nor bad. And that no matter how much you love a character, you cannot simply forgive them for their crimes.

“What really caused Dooku to become a Sith?”

Selfishness and ambition, or at least the seeds thereof justified by more noble dressing. He was already a wise Jedi master - but the forbidden knowledge and powers of the dark side were tempting; and he was already a powerful and influential noble, but the authority to reshape the galaxy in his image was tempting

He had some somewhat reasonable goals initially - but the price to enter very rapidly spun him into a moral event horizon, and the corrupting power of the dark side and slippery slope of authoritarianism saw him rapidly become a violent aspiring tyrant - both between ambition and indulgence, but the in universe decaying affect of the dark side

Had Dooku truly cared about purifying the republic, as soon as he learned that its decay was responsible by Palpatine and corporations he would’ve exposed them - but between the sunk cost fallacy of “it’s too late, I can’t let everything I did be in vain” and then the selfish hook of power and influence on an unfathamoble scale he decided he was fine with it

He blames the Jedi for Qui-gon’s death, as if he was wasn’t complicit in the Sith schemes that brought Qui gon in contact with Maul, and as if he hadn’t arranged for Sifo Dyas’s assassination

Good guys can’t force lightning and be emperor after all ;) but unlike maul before him who was molded from childhood and Anakin after who had many stressors created to bring out his worst self; Dooku had everything he could ever want, and the wisdom to kkkw better and still chose the dark side knowing more than maul or Anakin what it was

Dooku’s a fascinating character , (albeit inconsistently characterized) but part of that is that he has really petty and selfish motivations, but instead of using his wisdom to do better - he uses it to tailor noble excuse for his actions and path

But yeah, initially a disillusionment with the Jedi and republic’s role in the galaxy, frustration against corruption and disorder, and then selfish seeds of anger and ambition underneath
