VisualSundae is a collection of top drawer art and design, an assemblage of interesting ideas. It's a display of creators ranging from amateur to accomplished, a whole spectrum kind of thing. Opinions are fine, but who really cares what I think? If it is posted, it means I like it. Enough said! It's all about letting the work of others speak for itself. Take a look around.

Farewell and Thanks!

After some reflection, this will be my last post on Visual Sundae. I have had a great time sharing my art and design inspiration with everyone, but have hit a point where I am unable to give Visual Sundae the full attention that it deserves. As for the future, I am moving on and focusing my efforts on other projects.
A big thank you to everyone who followed and supported Visual Sundae, I could not have done it without all of you.
Farewell, michaelnun

Manifesto Futura | graphic design

"We value the experimentation, the reformation of the message, and the smart incentives.
We believe in the atypical, and in the principle that says that form follows function.
We celebrate clear messages and intelligent contents.
We are an Independent Design Studio." — Manifiesto Futura
BRUTO

"Wallpaper* magazine invited us to collaborate in a project that would be exposed during design week in Milan. The task was to create 5 food items that were focused around one particular ingredient, also the branding and packaging.
We worked with Alfredo Villanueva, choosing "chili" as our main ingredient, so we could stand out our culture bringing the name of "Mexico" to an international exhibition not only by design but also by it's gastronomy.
In a world where everything screams, everything is flashy, BRUTO remains an outsider, confirming that what is well made can get along with simplicity. What is startling is not necessarily noisy."

MUTUO

"Mutuo, two architects proposing solutions that represent an ode to the experimentation. Taking advantage of their different roots, they create new experiences through chaos.
This project allowed us to came out with a particular solution: An identity with no logo, that relies in other resources to accomplish the characteristics of recognition and constancy that branding requires."

PERRO MALO

"Inspired in Cerberus and Justice for All. A young, fierce and robust mezcal.
A mezcal that destroys."

Two Arms Inc. | print

"Two Arms Inc. is a ( soon to be husband and wife team ) founded by Mike Tabie and Karen Goheen in 2009. We met 6 years ago in Orlando, FL while working with a local design agency and screen-printing together on nights and weekends. We independently moved to New York but continued to work separately within large and small design agencies. After a year we decided to take the plunge and partner together and start a business with our own vision in mind. There is nothing more satisfying then working with someone you love and trust. We love collaborating and getting our hands dirty. We are specialists of the handmade. We believe in craftsmanship, an attention to detail, and that sweet spot between concept and execution. We started this business because we care about what we do, and we want to work with clients who are passionate about their vision." — Two Arms Inc.
HERB LESTER | LUGGAGE TAG SET

"When we aren't working, we are traveling! Well ...traveling to the bodega, traveling to find the best NY Slice, or traveling to the nearest bar... Even if we don't venture far from our humble Brooklyn neighborhood, we don't leave without a custom set of four double-sided tags: Air, Rail, Land, Sea. This product was a fun collaboration with our favorite team across the pond, Herb Lester Associates. These tag's are printed on almost indestructible Tyvek®, a 1950s miracle product that looks like paper but resists tears and water."

BELL & OAK | FINE LEATHER GOODS PACKAGING

"At the corner of Bell and Oak street in Denton Texas is Weldon's Saddle shop, where Clint Wilkson's grandfather has hand crafted leather since 1957. Bell & Oak leather goods is dedicated to his grandfather's craft of building saddles. All of the products are made using the same processes and tools that have been in his family for decades. We absolutely loved Clint's work, and were thrilled to work with him to create his packaging. The Bell and Oak logo was created by one of our favorite designers Curtis Jinkins of Neighborhood Studios."

BAILEY HUNTER ROBINSON | EXPERT AMERICANA TATTOOING

"We design a custom letterpressed business card set for Bailey H. Robinson, one of our favorite tattoo artists working in Brooklyn, NY. Bailey has a very distinct take on American traditional tattooing. We really wanted to design something the looked and felt like traditional turn of the century type."

MOMA DESIGN STORE | DESTINATION NYC

"'Representing all 5 boroughs, this collection is 100% designed in New York City and made in the USA. Featuring new faces and established designers, a dynamic collection from the city that never sleeps.' We couldn't be more proud to be a part of the MOMA Design Store's collection of New York designers. We created a some exclusive hand printed merchandise including greeting cards, test print journals, apparel and even a limited run of full sized test print press sheets."

V A L | object design

"VAL is an Award Winning London based design studio created by independent designer Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers in April 2009, specializing in furniture and accessories for the high-end market. Trained as an industrial designer and with 10 years of consistent work experience designing, making and selling furniture. The concepts behind VAL furniture are functionality, aesthetics and surprise factor.
Valentinaʼs design fuses conceptual thinking, artistic approach and usability. What is unique about her work, is its originality, boldness, narrative and outstanding quality. Valentina offers furniture and accessories created in the line of emotional design: pieces made to last, to grow older with their owners, becoming into much more than just a material possession to them. The designs are not based in disposable transit trends. This particular take in furniture and accessories invites the user to interact with it, to play, to question, to surprise, to enjoy."

THE PRICKLY PAIR CHAIRS Material | mix media Dimensions | variable
The Prickly Pair Chairs is a furniture project born out of the creative experience of a Mexican designer in Europe.
The chairs juxtapose Mexican and European aesthetic values, incorporating the formal design elements and quirks of both to create a cultural blend. They are frivolous and humorous yet simultaneously encourage reflection and acceptance. Shapes, materials, colours, textures and finishes collide in irreverent and playful harmony; the Prickly pair chairs are a statement against prejudice and preconceptions.
The classical French oval chair originated in the Rococo period during the reign of Louis XV and has since been adopted throughout central Europe. Although now completely familiar, its form was radical at the time — considered over-decorated nonsense which dispensed with rectilinear styles in favour of more light-hearted asymmetric forms. Rococo’s naturalistic and exuberant ornamentation mixed natural and artificial forms of all kinds, from plant motifs to representations of the grotesque.
The Nopal cactus symbolizes Mexican heritage and national pride. According to legend, the Gods told the Aztecs to build Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) in the place they saw an eagle standing on a Nopal, devouring a snake. To this day, the image resides on the National Shield.
While Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns may immediately convey ‘Mexican-ness’ to European audiences (even though they were filmed in Spain and Italy), it is the sight of cactus and Nopales that brings meaning to Mexican daily life and form the most beloved symbols of the country’s culture.
The blend of these two iconographic elements was achieved in this ‘matching’ pair of chairs. ‘Prickly Pair Chairs’ respects the original chair but concludes that its new, hybrid form synthesizes the ‘best of both worlds’; it evokes nostalgia for what was left behind and helps facilitate a sense of belonging in a new environment by fusing two powerful cultural symbols.

THE GHOST OF A CHAIR Material | 4mm polyester sheets Technique | hand made Special Features | each chair is a one-off.
These fabulous Ghost Chairs are a limited edition of 99 pieces of each style, are made upon request, and can be customized in any colour.
The Ghost of a Chair is a sculptural free-form furniture piece, handmade out of a single transparent polyester sheet. Each chair is unique due to its unconventional manufacturing process, using a combination of high-end technology and craft, in a labour of love. Volatile and unpredictable, each Ghost chair is a One-off.
The Ghost of a Chair embodies signature aesthetics with its originality and functionality in a statement furniture piece. Its transparency enables the chair to exist in any environment. The material itself is a light conductor and can easily function as an outdoor fixture; its versatility goes as far as your imagination can take you.
The Ghost of a Chair is presented as a Lady version — without armrest — and Gentleman style — arm chair. Both with a weight allowance up to 150 kg.

The Blooming Branches Collection: Lamps & Ceramics Material | stoneware ceramics, wood, electrical fittings, fabrics Dimensions | variable

With a strong interest in typography, illustration and editorial design, he has worked with clients from the US, UK, Middle East, Asia and Australia. A beach-lover that can't actually surf, he always strives to instill laughter, light-heartedness, and a touch of humour in his work." — Sidney Lim YX
Sewing Dreams and Fate - A Poster

Inspired by a poem:
"Embroidering my fate with velvet and some moonlight, I hunt stars across the sea as the sun waves me goodbye. Little by little I see perfection awakening my sleepy soul, Sewing dreams and beauty together, hemming my sigh." — Karla Bardanza

In the Woods

"Visual identity for In The Woods Festival, a one-day music festival held at a woodland location in the UK every summer, aimed at promoting up-and-coming artists and bands from Britain. The exact lineup and venue of the event is kept secret and released to the public only on the day of the event.
Started out as a hypothetical rebranding project done as part of CSM BA Graphic Design coursework, but artwork ended up being utilised for the actual event publicity. Featured photographs and video are from the official In The Woods Festival website."

Love Me, Possess Me

Abbey Watkins | illustration

"For British illustrator and print designer Abbey Watkins, drawing has always been the primary form of expression. Her work is grounded in realism created in graphite, but pulls on the strings of surrealism with it’s mix of human, animal and spiritual worlds. From her studies in Textile Design for Fashion, where she achieved first class honours in 2011, Abbey developed her work from functional illustrations to a more uncertain and personal place, often drawing on mythology and archetypal themes. The fight between the conscious and the subconscious is boiling beneath the surface of her most recent work. Where her print designs are concerned, a language between the pencil and the digital world has been developed to create both simple and elaborate pieces.”
Mythological Portrait Series
"An on-going personal series of portraits inspired by pieces of mythology that strike something with me."
In Death, We Live

"There are piece of symbology concerning life and death scattered across this drawing. The knives in the collarbones were inspired by Chibs of Sons of Anarchy."

Achiyalabopa

"Achiyalabopa is a bird of Native American legend. It is said to be rainbow coloured and have feathers like knives. In some instances it is linked with the creation of the world."

Confuse the Spirit

"The illustrations were inspired by the myths and legends of Native American culture; confusing the bad spirits by not being able to pin point the body to infiltrate the mind. I was also inspired by their use of peyote and transcendent spiritual visions. "

Georgia Hill | typography

"I’m an Australian typographer, illustrator and artist, specializing in hand drawn artworks and projects with a lyrical, visual vocabulary.
Working in a range of mediums, my focus lies in generating truly creative, high impact visuals for professional and personal illustrations, typography, branding, murals, installations and exhibitions.” — Georgia Hill
Good Things Everywhere

Process:

Insta Slow Jams

"A collection of typographic gifs based on rnb/hip hop lyrics…It was Valetine’s Day! I decided to celebrate with a whole lot of 90s rnb/hip hop lovin/cheatin/cryin/trying tracks, releasing a series of typo based gifs on Instagram called ‘INSTA SLOW JAMS’. All the type and pattern work was hand drawn, then built up digitially to animate.
More to come and I am obviously very single with the time to do this.”

Never Ending Bummer | Solo Show

"‘Never Ending Bummer’ is a series of illustrative, hand generated type based artworks that visualises cycles of anticipation, observation and reflections of a spent summer.
These monochromatic works develop experimental compositions where letters and phrasing are deconstructed from a cyclical theme, allowing each phrase to become an exaggerated visualisation of anticipation and disappointments. While each work is unrelated to the next, the final collection is layered with details of rhythm, repetition, and sequence, further shaping the sense of dramatic change within seasons, relationships, time, and fortune.”

The Hungry Workshop | print

Stay Hungry | 360 x 500mm letterpress print on Wild 300gsm (35% cotton stock).
“'We are a studio that believes in the narrative that drives us all. We hold in equal regard the process, craftsmanship and origin of every aspect of every project.'
Simon and Jenna Hipgrave established The Hungry Workshop to deliver this passion for storytelling through design, process, craft and collaboration. They’re hands on with many aspects of each project, often quite literally rolling up their sleeves and getting elbow deep in creating a perfect execution."
Blank Collection

"It can be hard to find a card that has the perfect sentiment – that’s why we created the Blank Collection. A series of floral woodcut illustrations and vintage styled sans serif typography is offset by your sweet, silly or serious handwritten message. With a little bit of guidance along the way you can add your own words to create a truly unique and original card that will really let someone know how you’re feeling.
The blank collection cards are A6 (105 x 148.5mm) and letterpress printed on Stephen Smart White 330gsm, a 100% carbon neutral stock."

Flynn's Anaglyph Letterpress Print

"A place where you can pass from one dimension to the other, Flynn’s is the home of the fabled Tron arcade that, in 2010, transported Sam Flynn into a digital world. Our print is an homage to that moment – put on a pair of classic red / blue 3d glasses and the anaglyphic print comes to life with another dimension.
Created for the ‘Directors Cut’ Look Hear exhibition 2013, Flynn’s was letterpress printed by hand on our Asbern proof press in two colours on Crane Lettra 300gsm."

Floral Wrapped Cards

"Each card is wrapped in an Australian floral pattern, letterpress printed in bright magenta and turquoise on Wild 300gsm, a 35% cotton stock."
