Noxocology 1 - basics part 2

“Next we will cover what the ten base elements are.”

Murmurs are heard throughout the class room, “ten? I thought there were only five,” and

 “There's only ten? I thought there’d be more.”  were both well voiced opinions in that moment before a voice rang out.

“Alright, enough chatter, let's continue this lesson,” Mr. Witchwood spoke, “The ten elements are divided into groups based on how common they are in the world and how common they are in magicians. The first five are the primal or worldly elements. You all should know these, even if you’ve never realized they could be used by magicians, as they are fire, wood, water, air, and earth. The other five are the xenal or otherworldly elements, made up of space, time, light, gravity, and of course, darkness. To further clarify what each element can do, I'll be briefly describing each element.”

“ Fire, “ he started, “ is simple, it is heat and all that burns. It is great in a fight and even greater for general survival. Many a group has survived due only to the flame of a pyromancer. It is used to cook and to kill in equal measure. In combat, it is used for explosive fireballs, long range flaming bolts, and is the most popular element for weaponcraft. Weaponcraft or more generally magicraft is the use of magic to create an object. Although they do drain your mana, or magical stamina, its usually much less than most spells, and is much more cost efficient compared to a single target spell. For example, crafting and throwing a shadow dagger,” he said as he flexed his hand drawing in the shadows into his hand forming a dagger,”  is much less draining compared to shooting a bolt of shadow at someone. Oh, shi- shoot, got going on a tangent,” he let the dagger fall out of his hand as it begins to fade away into a dark mist before continuing, “moving on to the next element in line. ”

“Wood is thankfully one I can demonstrate easily. Wood is all that grows and blossoms. It is plants, from trees to grass. If it grows in the light, wood can affect it. However like all magic, we can not create from nothing, so if there are no plants or seeds in an area, wood is worthless. If you’re a wood magician or phytomancer, always, and I can’t stress this enough, always carry seeds, leaves or some other plant matter. Personally, ” he says pulling two bags from his pocket, one filled with seeds and one with mushrooms, “I always carry some acorns and a few bags of mixed seeds. Tree seeds are good for walls or magicraft, while other seeds can be used for anything quick, like food. The mushrooms are unique to darkness and wood compound wizards. Normally, the wood elements barely works on mushrooms but when compounded with the darkness element, it allows me to create puppet soldiers from anything from dolls to, of course, corpses.” He flashes a wicked grin before a bell rings, “ but on that cheery note, you are dismissed, we will pick up with water next class as understanding all the elements will be vital to understand what makes darkness unique. ”

Thinking about the Holmes story where a blind girl goes to him and is like "My fiancé is missing and he kept telling me the week leading up to his disappearance that he would always love me and come back for me,were anything to happen so I think he knew he was in trouble and I love him so much and I'm going to wait for him but I'd like to find him faster,ya know?" And Holmes figures out that it was this girl's parents to scam her out of money she was owed from an estate which she gave to them because she was still living at home,which she wouldn't be if she ever married,so her step father PRETENDED TO DATE HER for MONTHS to keep her from ever getting engaged to a real person and when Holmes finds out he confronts this man and this man is like "Well,you caught me! But it wasn't illegal:) so:)" and Holmes is like "No,but it was sickening and cruel and if she had a brother or good male friend he should post you up and whip you but she doesn't." And the man is like "No,she doesn't." And does the Victorian version of sticking his tongue out and Holmes is like "Well,I guess I'll do then!" And HE PULLS OUT HIS HUNTING WHIP.

Noxocology - Class 1 - The basics

The following is writing is meant to help me practice writing as well as set up world building for my hopeful novel. Thanks to anyone who reads this!

“Welcome class,” Mr. Witchwood said, throwing his long black cape back “ to the first day of actual learning. Most of you should be familiar with the basics of magic, but this course is open to all those who want to learn about Noxomancy and its uses, including those without the gift to use magic at all. How many of you are not able to use magic at all?” Out of the class of 30, only 4 raised their hands. “Alright and out of the rest of you, how many can not use Noxomancy?” This time 5 different hands went up. “Good, that leaves us with twenty-one Noxomancers, that should be everyone that's currently enrolled. Since this is the first year of the College of Magic’s existence, everyone's a first year,” he said with a slight grin.

“Alright, let's start by breaking magic down into words. All magical studies are named in the same style. As in, Noxomancy, the first part noxo- is the element of the study, in this case darkness. The last part -mancy basically means study of or use of. So in this case Noxomancy is the study or use of darkness. Any questions so far?” A teenage student in the front row raises her hand, Mr. Witchwood nods in her direction. She asks, “ What about dual-elements, do they get a particular name?” “Great question, and it depends. Sometimes a name is given in legends or folktales that fits a particular dual-element combo or usage. As some of you likely know, I am a necromancer, meaning I wield death, although it's more complicated than it sounds. But mine is a dual-element of wood and darkness, a rare combo indeed. Other elemental combinations I can think of are Solomancy, Lunomancy, and, of course Vitalomancy. Homework for the day will be to tell me what the two elements that make up the compound element are as well as what that compound element is. Next we will cover what the 10 base elements are.”
