Art for @zillac ‘s wonderful fic Talis, V. Talis, J. "Social Behaviors of Lokfar Peninsula’s Wild Mammals (Specifically Those of my Co-Author)"
I don’t have enough good things to say about this story - the concept of research assistant Viktor stumbling upon semi-raised-by-wolves Jayce is just toooo good and zillac writes it beautifully. There is drama, plot, humor, love, tenderness... it’s got everything! Do yourself a favor and read it asap (and then read all of their other work like I did) ♥️

Match Your Breath to Mine
Chapter 3: Spring fever
-
Viktor woke slowly, to the stream of sun angling into their room through the narrow gap of the window that the blinds didn't cover and the sweet knowledge that it was Saturday.
Which was not to say that it was a day free of responsibility -- he had a lab report to write up, homework to complete for two classes, and an afternoon shift at the work-study job that was a condition of his scholarship. But the fact that it was Saturday meant that he hadn't been forced to drag himself out of bed for classes, and he wouldn't have to endure any other people except in passing. Except for Jayce, but Jayce didn't really seem to register on Viktor's introvert meter.
And now he was thinking too much to go back to sleep. He pried one eye open to check the time -- not quite noon yet, but after eleven, which was good. It meant he'd gotten a solid eight hours of sleep for once, without his leg or back twinging him awake, which was even better. He sat up and stretched and glanced over at Jayce's bed and--
Jayce was still in bed, too.
And that... That was probably not good. Jayce was a distressingly early riser, even on the weekends. That he was still in bed this late on a Saturday meant that something had gone terribly wrong somewhere.
"Jayce?"
Jayce did not move. Viktor had to watch for a minute to make sure he was even breathing.

"wealth" means different things to different people. for me it means being able to live quietly and comfortably, adopt a pet, donate to charities I care about, be able to take care of myself in my old age, and eventually leave an inheritance to my loved ones, who will then be forced by the stipulations of my will to be locked at midnight in a Mystery Mansion and solve an elaborate series of puzzles while being mysteriously killed off one by one. and i don't think that's so much to ask

In case anyone was wondering...
This is my local forecast for the next week. Please note that the "feels like" temps are over 100 every single day. Right now, it feels like 113 outside my house.
(For people with sensible temperature units, that's just about 38C. Right now, this very moment, I'm sitting at 37 with a "feels like" of 44. My actual highs for the week range from 33 to 37. Our *lows* are hitting at about 24.)
.
I will not be taking the trash to the curb tonight until after sunset.

if you ever find yourself thinking “wow I scraped the bottom of the barrel with my energy with that and came out okay!” that’s the devil talking. you did not come out okay. you borrowed energy from the future. you will repay it if you don’t rest and replenish the borrowed energy first.

random anecdote for father's day: one time during a long car ride my dad asked me, "you're familiar with Murphy's Law, right?" and i was like "isn't that the one about how anything that can go wrong will go wrong?" and he said "yeah, exactly" and i said "why do you ask?" and he went "well, have you heard of Cole's Law?" and i said "no, actually, what's that?" and he said "it's mostly lettuce and carrots with a little dressing mixed in"

question: how does it feel to watch people you care about be mistreated? how would you describe that feeling?
#i mean yes#but the first step is convincing myself#that anyone cares enough to notice the mistreatment in the first place#and sometimes that is difficult#pique queue
