Were people not imaging District 11 being a majority Black district before this?? People keep saying “not everyone from d11 is black”, which like I guess? Have they not been associated with being “the black district”?
Of the six (?) district 11 tributes we see in the movies, all of them are black. Statistically then, would the majority of their district not also be of the same race?

honestly i take collins' racially coding with a grain of salt because as a writer there's no reason for her to not speak up, especially when she's supposed to have written this characters as poc. rick riordan surely has his flaws but he went nuts when the first pjo adaptation was made and then again when the fans started shitting on a black girl because her character was described with blonde hair in the books. suzanne never - never !!! - once said a thing except for when she claimed that she never intended katniss or the seam to be poc and that alone answer all of my question about her intention behind thg (she truly just wrote words on a paper without a single thought i'm afraid)
I just looked up the 2011 article where she states
“They were not particularly intended to be biracial. It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There’s been a lot of ethnic mixing. But I think I describe them as having dark hair, grey eyes, and sort of olive skin. You know, we have hair and makeup. But then there are some characters in the book who are more specifically described.”
Gary Ross also says
“But I think Suzanne didn’t see a particular ethnicity to Gale and Katniss when she wrote it…”
Now having this information I feel kind of silly for advocating the for casting of black and indigenous actors for these characters. I assumed Suzanne cared more about race than she does, or alternatively that she considered it in relation to the themes of her work(s).
Also in the article she says “there are some characters in the book who are more specifically described.”
GR: Thresh and Rue.
SC: They’re African-American.
So I’m going to assume now that Thresh and Rue were the only characters (maybe in the whole series) intended to be non-white. (With this information, is it weird that the only “canonically” Black characters live in the south and work as farmers? Maybe.) Everyone else can be white theoretically, Suzanne wouldn’t have had a problem.
Maybe if Suzanne as a writer cared more about people of color in her works, and also didn’t make her movies with the company that cast Jacob Lautner as a Quileute natuve character… Anyway.
I think it’s wonderful Rick Riordan is a YA author who has a very *obviously stated* diverse cast of characters, and that he was adamant in defending the shows casting. It’s Unfortunate that there aren’t many YA authors of level of fame who are pushing for the much needed diversity and representation in books and film.
Maybe they should’ve adapt Kane Chronicles or Magnus Chase instead of SOTR, wouldn’t that be something.

Wyatt now being the only poc from the D12 group dying for a little white girl, and Ampert being the only main black character having the most brutal death. Do these casting directors think at all

Sometimes love is finally getting the courage to give flowers to the girl you like, because you found them growing in the meadows and they reminded you of her, wild and beautiful and free
Sometimes love is choosing to smell oniony for the day rather than telling the boy you like that you recognise the flowers he's picked for you

honestly the only positive thing I can think of in casting a white girl as Louella is so we don't have to see a Black or indigenous girl getting tortured by the Capitol and having another girl of colour's body mutilated to look like her. But it still feels wrong. I hc Louella as a woc and still felt incredibly icky doing it whilst reading, cause of what happened to her. I think all around, Louella could've been written differently.
This is a really good point, I do agree with you. I’m largely disappointed by these castings, as well as the casting for Wyatt because I thought we would get good Black/ indigenous rep out of these characters. Even though Collins kind of beats around the bush with it, I think race plays an important role in the thematic elements of the Hunger Games, and unfortunately that won’t be explored in this movie.
Another “benefit” of this casting is that these actresses won’t get the same racist treatment/ reaction that Rue’s actress got in the first movie. This whole casting situation would have been fixed if Collins was exceedingly more explicit in telling the race of her characters. YA is wonderful at really hitting you over the head with The Point, so it’s unfortunate they’re not so able to do this with characters race.
Idk, maybe they should have just cast Rue as white.
#i also think d11 being *the black district* is lowkey weird and problematic now#and useless to bother to racially code them if you can have a d11 girl be white now#I don’t think our dear Suzanne is that woke#thg#sotr#the hunger games#sunrise on the reaping#why do I expect these kinda things from white women

People justifying the Louella casting by saying “not all of D11 is Black 🥺🥺” bffr D11 is the only district Suzanne bothered to racially code, I’m going to assume there are very few white people in the district. Why does the whitewashing and bad decisions on Lionsgate and Collins’s part have to be so eagerly excused?

all of the seam & merchant descriptions.
gray eyes. olive skin. long dark hair, and in (haymitch's case), curly.
blue eyes. pale skin. varying degrees of blonde hair.
do NOT allow for lionsgate, with the go ahead of suzanne collins to whitewash her characters of colour for the coin. do not give racists your support. buy used versions of the books, dvds, merch. do not watch the movie. boycott. outcry. stop being passive in a time where uproar is demanded. do not give them your support when all they have done for the past 14 years, is whitewash, warp, and deny.
listen to POC when they tell you that they're affected by the casting. listen to POC when they tell you that suzanne collins promotes stereotypes. listen to the disabled and the mentally ill when they tell you the same.
we are in fascist times, people. as you all love to say, do not fucking fall for the propaganda. stop being consumerist and go against the things that you will love for a short-term, in order to have a better long-term. i'm tired. the people affected are tired. stop trying to be peaceful in a conservative fandom. there is no room for anyone who isn't anyone who agrees with you here, and we need to start making it common to have other opinions without feeling like you'll get attacked. this fandom needs to come together and boycott. stop the petty shipping drama and the justification for racism shit. stop with promoting harmful stereotypes on behalf of an author who does not care about you and cares about her pay and coin. stop letting nostalgia blind you and start calling for better from the people who supposedly admire.
we do not condone, all of this is wrong.

And no I don’t think casting Wyatt as Asian is a diversity win. Yes there’s probably Asian people in D12 (I’m inclined to head canon them having a denser pop in districts like 4), but he’s from the seam, and seam characters have frequently been indigenous (or black) “coded”. I’ll excuse making Haymitch white for “continuity”, but Wyatt and Louella should have been properly casted as indigenous or black.
