i had the worst time trying to just finish the orange side. it was like my computer didn't want it to exist at all. it crashed 30+ times while i worked on it, then the file corrupted. (i had backups of this file at that point though.) why. why. why. wh

okay so now they're paying rent in my brain. there's actually a handful of headcanons sewn into here... some are specifically for my orange addison fic/au. i wonder if anyone will notice though (no capri is not blind.)

Hello! I noticed that some of your fics on Ao3 are tagged "Screen Reader Friendly," and I wondered what makes a fic screen reader friendly. Is it just about formatting, or does content matter too?

Hi, thank you so much for asking this question!!! Disclaimer I am not visually impaired so all of this information I have learned by seeing blind or visually impaired people talk about this issue.

It’s primarily formatting! I’ll list everything I do to try to make my fics accessible here.

Line breaks!!! Use the ao3 line break code instead of adding a bunch of symbols. This is the biggest thing I had to change once I realized my fics were not screen reader friendly.

HOWEVER some screen readers won’t pick up on the horizontal line, either. Another good option is to use a short series of symbols, for example: “~~” or “- - -“

Basically, just don’t use more than three symbols in a row. I used to use “~~~/\~~~” with a delta symbol in the middle to look like the triforce, but a screen reader would see that and say “asterisk asterisk asterisk delta asterisk asterisk asterisk” which is pretty annoying lol

Most screen readers don’t differentiate between regular text and bold/italics. It’s fine to have those in your story, but if the bold/italics significantly changes the plot or the implications of a sentence then it is not screen reader friendly

Screen readers can’t describe a line break that is just an empty space. For example, in one of my fics I have a character reading a note, and I have an extra ‘return button’ space before and after the note to make the note distinct from the rest of the text. To make that fic more screen reader friendly, instead of just an empty space, I wrote “[Line Break]”. That way, a screen reader can say “line break”, and readers still recognize it as a line break

If you have any sort of chat fic (AND this goes for hashtags on tumblr too!) with screen names, be sure to distinguish the separate words in the screen name. You can do this with by capitalizing the first letter of each word like this “ScreenNameHere” or with dashes in between each word “screen-name-here”. That helps screen readers and also people with things like dyslexia who have trouble distinguishing words if they aren’t capitalized or separated in some way.

Screen readers can read image emojis like this smiley face 😁 because they have embedded alt text, but they can’t read text emojis as an emoji, like this one “:D”. If you use any of those in your fic, add a description like this: “ :D [Image description: text emoji of a smiley face with a big, open mouthed smile. End description].”

Also, this one doesn’t have to do with a screen reader, but if you have an image embedded in your story, keep these things in mind:

Be sure to describe the image so anyone who is blind or visually impaired can still experience the image. I don’t think it’s possible to add alt text to the actual image, so I usually put this below the image: “[Image ID: description of the image. Note the important details, but be as concise as you can. /End ID]”. Including the image description instead of some sort of alt text is good for DeafBlind people who can’t see the image well enough but don’t use a screen reader.

Some blind or visually impaired people don’t use a screen reader and instead zoom in on the text. If an image is embedded in the story, be sure it is sized correctly. If it isn’t, it can make scrolling sideways to read zoomed in text more difficult because it makes the webpage much wider than the text itself.

Not all my fics have the screen reader friendly tag because 1. There might be a few I haven’t updated yet, and 2. I didn’t include the tag on fics that have weird formatting or are accent heavy. For example, in Kinship I wrote Twilight’s dialogue to represent his strong accent, and those kinds of things with apostrophes and half-words don’t come through well with a screen reader.

I personally don’t think it’s good practice to include a ton of apostrophes or shortened words to distinguish an accent. Even for people not using screen readers, it’s hard to read. For me, if I see a fic with things like that, I won’t read it. Maybe try having a few words that the character’s accent comes through on, or write something about their heavy accent outside of the dialogue.

The “Screen Reader Friendly” tag isn’t an officially recognized AO3 tag yet, but the more people who use it, the sooner it will be!

Those are all the things I can think of right now. If anyone has any other tips to add, please do so!!

that said i've been rotating the orange addison AU in my head a lot and i want to chat about it. would love to ask if people have questions about it; i know there's very little material to work with, though, so i will also try to share things throughout these next couple days

in particular the way i've been characterizing orange in this au is that they get in their own head often, thus they're either absurdly silent (shrinking into the background) or thinking aloud to themself. latter happens more often when they start spiraling, but before then they try to keep quiet. the repressorrr (and they're also just naturally quiet)

i'd whip out canon dialogue but i'm on mobile right now. i get the vibe that orange is (on purpose or by accident, i'm leaning towards "by accident") emotionally distant, even from themself

the talking to themself when no one's looking is a way to reclaim the bits of themself they hide yk?

there's no prominent orange addison-centric au right now, is there? no specific work or universe or whichever that has an orange addison pov or focus? can i capitalize on this market? can it be weird? can i make it weird

i think this is more a fanfic idea than anything else.

this is our orange addison.

they have recently been feeling aimless and purposeless. sure, they have a good job and make decent sales, but it's getting old. nothing holds significant meaning. in a line-up, our orange addison doesn't stand out in a crowd at all. sure, they have their little tailoring service creating armor accessories, but they're not the most proficient of magicians, so their work does little more than look pretty.

does their place in cyber city matter? does their work matter? are they truly making lightners' lives better? is our orange addison... happy?

since they know they're not supposed to feel this way--not supposed to lament their role and purpose as an addison--they keep these feelings inside. that gets lonely, though. so they've taken to airing their feelings out loud alone in the dump, where no one can hear.

spamton hears. he doesn't want to, considering this orange addison was one of the low-lives who abandoned him without even knowing. but a lot of what they're ranting about sounds very familiar to spamton: echoes of thoughts and feelings he once had, still has to this day.

while he hates them... he feels a deep sense of pity for the addison's current lack of direction. and perhaps, if he lends some charity to a wanting soul, they could help him with an issue of his own...

anyway. the whole crux of the AU is spamton secretly, anonymously helping orange "find meaning" while trying (and maybe failing, a little) to keep orange away from the path spamton followed. the issue is that orange is weirdly enthusiastic after they've decided to follow the glitchy disembodied voice offering life advice, and they take things way further than they need to.

the mood here is a semi-manic disney animator held down by censors and the s&p department being enabled to let loose in the messiest way possible featuring shenanigans. though, it'd very much be a slow burn: orange would seemingly be taking things reasonably, but as it turns out there's this pearl of repression festering inside and creating things/letting loose with spamton scratches an itch they didn't realize they had. and as they gain confidence they slowwwly get more openly unhinged.

i'm not too sure how to approach this au/idea yet but i will be rotating it in my brain. i'm entertained by the mental image of spamton crawling along walls finding new ways to hide himself as he tries to act like orange's conscience. and the idea of him initially trying to manipulate orange into doing things for his benefit, but as things progress he's genuinely trying to convince orange to maybe chill out. they are mutual dangers to themselves but maybe saving graces to each other?

there'll be a happy ending to all of it i think.

prescript: i hope that i'm not missing the Special Sauce(TM) that comes with defernull/underfell, when there is a "canon" i try to get as close to it as i can manage. i still get caught up with my own biases, interpretations, and interests, and at the end of the day: totally fine. but i want to honor the "soul" of things, to be loyal when i adapt.

actual meat: last year underfell clarified the different routes for their au (betrayal (no mercy); trust (neutral); closure (pacifist)). ideas change, and for deltarune in particular the "routes" we take and consequences we face aren't as clear in final product since the game's unfinished. and even then, there's no one-to-one wrt deltarune and undertale routes.

i'd still like to follow the philosophy of that, and how things get applied between underfell and defernull.

that's all to say this all-recruits defernull is where this all happens. i could maybe see a neutral-but-not-all-recruits route where susie still tried to save tenna, but because she didn't get all the help she could've, tenna remains dead (like in canon deltarune) or tenna emerges much worse off for wear in multiple ways. the way i'm characterizing fell!susie in my head... there'd be a lot of tears, a lot of frustration, but also a lot of resignation. the thought that she shouldn't have expected any differently, but she couldn't help but try her best anyway, even if her best was shit.

she'll keep hoping after that bad outcome, be it tenna living or dying, but the fun gang might be the only ones (and particularly just susie, i think kris wouldn't want much to do with tenna at all this AU) who want and do care about tenna. who can blame anyone else? susie might be a little resentful but would let that resentment pass because she didn't expect anything less.

either way, to quote the person behind underfell directly: "Almost like a quick forgive and forget kinda deal without any of them talking more about it. [They] learn to trust each other, but there’s still hurt. Some kind of weight. Specifically amongst themselves."

but to talk about all-recruits.

susie is my fauckigng anegele. i could see neutral route susie attempting to save tenna out of instinct/habit--really slotting into the hero role--but i think in all-recruits it'd become a thing where, in rallying everyone else to help her help him, susie faces her own feelings as to why she's doing it. because she wants to be, feel like a hero. out of selfishness, almost. tenna doesn't want to be saved, regardless of if he felt like he deserved it!

and she'd see those feelings, realize that's what it is, and then commit to it because dammit even though tenna doesn't want to be saved he's getting fucking saved anyway. so she's the big damn hero. she's saving him because she wants to. because she wants tenna to live. because she wants to talk to tenna again, and maybe see him reconcile with other people, or even make new friends. she wants that for him and she doesn't care if it's not what he wants.

if tenna wants to do anything about it, he better scream and kick and claw like susie's had to her entire damn life lol. and i think especially in the beginning post-c3 he wouldn't have the energy in him to even do that... considering defernull tenna is defined by his apathy and having changed himself to survive to the point of becoming unrecognizable, i think he'd have a very long way to go in that journey.

so i think for awhile susie would be kicking down his door, shouting "fuck you," and dragging him to and fro and making him experience life outside of his bubble. i don't know if tenna here should be dropped off at mettaton's or anything, i think it'd be a decent path because it'd mean a totally new start for him. separating from that old environment might help. but also he could be just as liable to his old habits, or still be massively suicidal dropped off at a brand new location. haha what i'm saying is i think he needs a bit of therapy first.

susie shouldn't necessarily be in charge of that, considering, er, the everything. but having a friend who doesn't take the bullshit at all i think is key

(i'm imagining the player forcing kris to interact with tenna during this period but kris so obviously just doesn't want to be around him. too many bad memories. making this dysfunctional family suffer.)
