Lamentablemente la sociedad colombiana está acostumbrada a normalizar las muertes de las víctimas en virtud de un conflicto armado que tiene sus raíces en lo profundo de la historia. Colombia es un país que al ser azotado por las consecuencias de la violencia desde hace más de seis décadas ha venido naturalizando las formas estructurales de violencia y violación a los derechos humanos a lo largo y ancho del territorio nacional, generando otros fenómenos tales como el desplazamiento forzado, el despojo de tierras, las desapariciones forzadas y la creación de grupos armados ilegales, entre otros efectos. La mayoría de las veces elegimos desconocer las cifras de las víctimas. La mayoría de las veces elegimos mirar hacia otro lado. Esta intervención artística busca evitar que estas 6402 muertes pasen desapercibidas en la historia y que esta serie de hechos y crímenes no queden impunes.

Pienso que ahora mismo debemos buscar mecanismos efectivos para restituir la paz y velar por el descubrimiento de la verdad y reconstrucción del tejido social en Colombia y creo que el arte puede contribuir en gran medida al cumplimiento de este propósito al establecer formas de incluir a la ciudadanía. Si bien soy consciente de que la lluvia citadina acabará con esta pieza artística, me gusta pensar que este trabajo permanecerá en la memoria colectiva.

Unfortunately, Colombian society is accustomed to normalizing the deaths of victims caused by the armed conflict that had its roots deep in history. Colombia is a country that has been affected by the consequences of violence for more than six-decade, which has naturalized structural forms of violence and human rights violations throughout the national territory, generating other phenomena such as forced displacement, land dispossession, forced disappearances, and the creation of illegal armed groups, among other effects. Most of the time we choose not to know the number of victims. Most of the time we choose to look the other way. This artistic intervention seeks to prevent this 6402 deaths from going unnoticed in history and that this series of events and crimes do not go unpunished.

I consider that right now we must seek effective mechanisms to restore peace and ensure the discovery of the truth and reconstruction of the social fabric in Colombia, and I believe that art can contribute greatly to the fulfillment of this purpose by establishing ways to include the citizenry. Even though I am aware that the city rain will destroy this piece of art, I like to think that this work will remain in the collective memory.

La primera piedra del museo de la memoria

Esta intervención artística se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de Bogotá en La Plaza de la Democracia, lugar destinado para la construcción del próximo museo de la Memoria de Colombia el cual se espera sea culminado en el año 2022. Elegí este como un lugar simbólico para la instalación de mi pieza artística con el propósito de contribuir a la reflexión y construcción de nuestra memoria histórica para que hechos como estos jamás se repitan en la historia de Colombia.

La obra se compone de una sopa de letras de 6m de ancho por 10m de largo impresa sobre papel bond con la forma del mapa de Colombia el cual fue adherido al suelo de la plaza usando engrudo casero. Dentro del mapa se encuentran dispuestos los números 6, 4, 0 y 2 que integran la sopa de letras sobre la cual flotan un conjunto de palabras que guardan una estrecha relación con el conflicto armado y el caso de los denominados falsos positivos. El mapa–sopa de letras funciona como un dispositivo para ejercitar la memoria y recordar una y otra vez aquello que no podemos dejar en el olvido.

Para realizar la instalación de la obra conté con el apoyo de mi familia con quienes tuve la posibilidad de discutir y reflexionar sobre la temática y nutrir la propuesta artística. Durante el proceso de instalación fue muy interesante notar que muchos de los transeúntes sintieron curiosidad por saber que estaba ocurriendo en el espacio y se acercaban a preguntar de que se trataba la acción o simplemente a observar la pieza artística. Encontré que muchas de las personas que se detuvieron a observar, se sentían identificadas de una u otra forma con el trabajo y al entablar el dialogo, algunos de ellos quisieron compartir sus historias y relatar la manera en que el conflicto armado también los ha afectado en sus vidas. Tal es el caso de la señora Lilia Salinas, quien siendo oriunda de Manaos Brasil tuvo que dejar su ciudad natal en busca de mejores oportunidades. Sin embargo al llegar a Bogotá tuvo que asentarse en un sector de la periferia de la ciudad en donde hay presencia de grupos armados ilegales, mismos grupos que se llevaron a su hijo hace 14 años y de quien nunca más volvió a tener noticia. Desde entonces ha llevado un proceso judicial por tratar de descubrir el paradero de su hijo sin tener éxito.

The first stone of the museum of memory

This artistic intervention took place in the city of Bogota in the Plaza de la Democracia, a site destined for the construction of the next Museum of Memory of Colombia, which is expected to be completed in 2022. I chose this as a symbolic place for the installation of my artistic piece with the purpose of contributing to the reflection and construction of our historical memory so that events like these would never be repeated in the history of Colombia.

The work consists of a 6 m wide by 10 m long alphabet soup printed on bond paper in the shape of the map of Colombia, which was adhered to the floor of the square using homemade paste. Inside the map are arranged the numbers 6, 4, 0, and 2 make up the alphabet soup, which float a set of words that are closely related to the armed conflict and the case of the so-called false positives. The alphabet-soup map works as a device to exercise memory and remember again and again what we cannot forget.

For the installation of the work, I had the support of my family with whom I had the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the subject and nurture the proposal. During the installation process, it was very interesting to notice that many passersby were curious to know what was happening in the space and approached to ask what the action was about or simply to observe the artistic piece. I found that many of the people who stopped to observe felt identified in one way or another with the work, and when we engaged in dialogue, some of them wanted to share their stories and relate how the armed conflict has also affected their lives. Such is the case of Mrs. Lilia Salinas, who, being a native of Manaus, Brazil, had to leave her hometown in search of better opportunities. However, when she arrived in Bogotá, she had to settle in a sector on the outskirts of the city where there is a presence of illegal armed groups, the same groups that took her son 14 years ago and of whom she has never heard from again. Since then, she has been involved in a judicial process to try to discover the whereabouts of her son without success.
