Is St.Pölten (Austria) worth a visit?
Maybe, but one has to come during the right time, particularly the months of July and August. Most of the time of the year St. Pölten is a pretty dead hole, but have you ever heard of the famous Frequency festival or the local Holi festival, where thousands of people come together? If not, we would recommend taking a look at the information we provided below in order to find out, if the small city west of Vienna might be worth a stay.
If you like big festivals and meeting new people you should definitely give the Frequency festival a shot, where you can see world famous musicians such as Macklemore, Kygo, Timmy Trumpet, Trailerpark, Casper, RafCamora&Bonez MC, Bastille, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Imagine Dragons or Felix Jaehn this year. The festival itself takes place at the VAZ area from August 16th to August 19th and the ticket costs between 150 and 200€. Moreover during the event many people stay in the city or camp next the magnificent river Traisen, where it is very relaxing and cooling, especially during this time of the year. There are also cheaper daily tickets available, which cost from 70€ onwards.
Should music festivals not appeal to you and you would rather prefer a more relaxing or classical sightseeing experience, we would recommend visiting the government district of St. Pölten. One of the most iconic buildings of this area is the so-called “Klangturm”, which is the second highest building of the city with a height of approximately 80 metres. It was built of glass and steel in 1996. Its entry is free of charge for everybody. From Monday to Saturday it opens its doors on 8 o’clock and you can stay until 6 PM. On Sunday it’s opened from 9AM to 5PM. From the top one has a nice overview over the city and its surrounding landscape. Furthermore there is a museum focusing on the history and culture of Lower Austria, which can be entered for only 5€ or 2€ as a child. For children under the age of 6 the entry is free. Additionally, many buildings in the city centre were erected during the Baroque times, for instance the train station, the Tellerhaus, the cathedral of St. Pölten, the trinity column, etc.
After having visited these places, you will surely be in the mood for some good food or drinks. For this, we would recommend the Schau.Spiel, where they have trendy and healthy food for moderate prices. Should cheaper but still delicious food be preferred, we would recommend the Vinzenz Pauli. Moreover, if you are a fan of the popular sitcom “How I met your mother”, there is just the right place for you: It’s an Irish pub inspired by the design of the MacLarens bar. It also features a karaoke bar and special extras, e.g. a Storm Trooper armour.
To sum it up, St. Pölten is a diverse city offering many different possibilities for tourists, but one has to know when to come and where to go. We would definitely recommend coming during the summer time because there are several different events taking place, especially the Frequency Festival, because you can meet many cool people, have a great atmosphere and also feel like camping next door. If there are any questions left or if you have already visited St. Pölten or attended the Frequency Festival in the past, we would be really pleased if you shared your experiences with us in the comments below.
