When I was a kid I used to look forward to Halloween for all the soon to be tooth decaying candy I was gonna extort from the lonely adults in my neighborhood. Halloween is still one of my favorite holidays but all that high-fructose corn syrup has since been replaced by alcohol and big booty witches twerking on their brooms. So I’m sure you can imagine how I felt when I heard about Hallowratchet vs. Hallowpalooza. I just knew it was gonna be incredibly lit. But I was wrong.
“Lit” doesn’t even begin to do Hallowratchet vs. Hallowpalooza justice. The event, brought together by a coming together of 777 Renegade and BEATLOVAZ: I LOVE BEATS & ART, breathed in the underground artistic energy of Detroit and exhaled it like all the smoke you know was in the air that night. People dressed in the forms of nuns, Winnie the Pooh, and Drake, milled in to  populate all four floors of the best Halloween party of the year. And I mean best. Not only were the good hosts of the party generous enough to allow 21+ people in free before 10 p.m., but you could feel the energy as you slowly approached the building. Every party has a vibe, and this one was unmistakable. The thing, though, the thing that made the night as amazing as it was is the diversity that Detroit stands for. Every single floor in the building had a different, original musical experience that you could only get in this city. You literally could’ve went from being serenaded by the soulful diatribe of the talented Lin-say on the floor called “Blood Bath”, to hysterically vibing with the trippy, clever rhymes of Nightmericans: Gully and Adolf Jyn; from electronic mastering coming from the likes of John Ryan to the evocative and energizing Gosh Pith. Also, because, why not, the party also hosted a beat battle that was won by Stacks/Culture. There was something for everyone and everything was well-done. Even more than the music, Molly Soda provided a visual experience within the party that set the tone and grounded the audience mentally in the unique reality of their current location. The subsequent art that only comes from interaction between artists and their audience is a beautiful one, and one that these hosts have mastered.
For me, next Halloween already can’t come fast enough. Events like Halloratchet vs. Hallowpalooza genuinely make me proud to be a part of the city that could put an event like this together and reminds me that treats on Halloween don’t always have to be bad for you.

DETROIT RISE: Videos to Peep
by TK
Detroit Rise is a new segment I’m beginning on 777theBlog simply documenting the rise of the Detroit Underground Music Scene. Previously I’ve announced the ’Shows to Look Forward to In Detroit’, now let’s take a look at the newest visuals from Hip Hop artists that you should watch if you haven’t already ;)
PULL UP - Earlly Mac ft. Prada Leary
On this comical short, directed by VICE, Earlly Mac travels through time and saves not only the damsel in distress, but the world. With some influence from Back to the Future, Earlly delivers yet another high-energy, quality and creative video including explosions, sword fighting, menacing villains and gliding through the air in a flyer, time traveling car. Watch Here: youtube.com/watch?v=T9H8Xj_kwkk
On The Block - Ka$h Tha Kushman
Ka$h tha Kushman comes right off the block in this visual. He exhibits the complete transition of a hustler to a performer as he bags up, posts up on a corner, and rocks a crazy show with 777. Directed by Renegade’s own Danny Z, he ensures to highlight the intricate Bulletproof Dolphin energy at the end, as the beat went from high-energy to cynical. Watch Here: youtube.com/watch?v=N22n1060jXc
Ghetto America - SupaKaine
SupaKaine shows you exactly where he’s from with this flick directed by Solus Cohn. This visual depicts a clear vision of the dirty streets of the ghetto, ensuring to incorporate citizens who’ve fallen victim to poverty. Ghetto America comes from his new project also titled Ghetto America, if you haven’t heard yet, you salt. Watch Here: youtube.com/watch?v=EQpBlCmcbCA
Zaddy Sayda - Mike Melinoe
Mike Melinoe may be young but he definitely made his mark with the high energy “Zaddy Sayda” visual. This colorful and based video will have you wondering “where did he come from?” and “what does he have in store?”. Watch Here: youtube.com/watch?v=gSSHrrCSgog
