As she sat atop Drogon and looked across the sprawl of King’s Landing, waves of memories crashed through her mind. She thought of her brother Viserys, stupidly eating up Illyrio’s lies all those years ago in Essos. “The people drink secret toasts to your health. They cry out for their true king.” But there were no secret toasts. There was no love for her here. “I don't want to be his queen” she had told Viserys. “I want to go home.” 

“So do I” he had replied. “I want us both to go home, but they took it from us. So tell me, sweet sister, how do we go home?” She had told him then that she did not know. “We go home with an army”, he said - Khal Drogo's army. And the Unsullied. And the Northmen. And Jon Snow. And though at the time Viserys believed them long dead - the dragons.

But she did not have dragons anymore. She had only one. Drogon, the last of her children. She had lost Viserion, and Rhaegal. She had lost Drogo, her Khal. She had lost Jorah, too. And now she had lost Jon. Loyal though he was, he would never see her the same now that they both knew his true lineage. She had lost so much. So much had been taken from her. And here, at last, she looked out and the symbol of all of it stood in front of her. A place she had never been, but had dreams and nightmares about all her life. And though the bells of surrender rang out, she knew that she must see it fall before the day was done.
