I'm always gonna be a little upset about Ruby ending up with Dorothy.
Tumblr media
Their relationship was just super forced in my opinion. There was 0 chemistry between the two, it just felt kinda stagnant and awkward.
I get love at first sight, it's one of the main themes of the series, literally what Snow and Charmings' relationship is based on. But it was just done wrong for Ruby and Dorothy.
Ruby really only had two main love options to me.
The first being Dr. Whale- because yes. It's Red Riding Hood and Doctor Frankenstein, it shouldn't work but it does.
Tumblr media
Their talk after Whale tries to jump off the dock is just touching, completely opening themselves up to each other in an extremely vulnerable moment.
Tumblr media
In their one- maybe two- meetings, they had more chemistry than Ruby and Dorothy did.
And the second- my personal bias- was Ruby and Mulan. 100%. These two were the wlw ship of OUAT for me.
Like.

You see the way Mulan is looking at Ruby? That is love at first sight.
That is the most "Oh wow" look I have ever seen.
Ruby and Mulan had maybe 3 episodes in total together, and yet they had as much chemistry as any of the official couples did. The way Mulan's looking at Ruby could rival Hook and Emma's longing glances at each other.
Nothing in this show is topping Ruby and Mulan's introduction, their first meeting is quite literally Ruby mounting Mulan. That's one of the gayest (complimentary) things I've ever seen.
Mulan literally followed Ruby to a different land.
Ruby had two extremely viable love interests, and it's such a shame to me that she didn't end up with either of them.
And honestly, Mulan really deserved to end up with Ruby. Her entire story is just heartbreak, always being chosen over for someone else. Mulan and Ruby could have been an absolutely beautiful relationship, with Mulan learning to open herself up again and let herself love, and Ruby finally finding the family she's been searching for for so long, in the woman who followed her to freaking Oz no less.
This was just such a lost opportunity for a genuine relationship.

I love Epic, it's one of my absolute favorite musicals- which really doesn't mean a whole lot cause I don't like musicals and I've only seen/heard Hamilton and Epic- but I really love the music.
But the fandom is one of the most difficultly black-and-white ones I've ever had the unfortunate experience of being a part of.
There's this longstanding ideology within the fandom- probably due to the young age of the audience- that sympathy is the same thing as advocacy.
I'm talking about Calypso.
I feel really really bad for Calypso. I do. She was dealt a really shitty hand in life. Locked away on an island that nobody could enter and that she couldn't leave, she was completely shut off from the outside world.
When Odysseus gets trapped on her island, she falls head over heels for him and eventually has to deal with the fact that the man she loves does not and will not love her back.
This is a horrible situation to be in. Unrequited love stings like a bitch, there's no cure for it, nothing that can make it better. Love is the strongest emotion, and loving someone who doesn't love you hurts.
So yeah, I sympathize with Calypso. I've never loved someone and I hope I never do, because the pain and jealousy and suffering that come from one-sided love would be more than I could bear.
That being said, I also acknowledge that Calypso is a shitty person. She kept Odysseus locked on her island for years, it's explicitly stated in her first song that she planned on raping Ody, "consummating their love" as she called it- though she probably didn't even realize it would be rape, but that's beside the point- and it's pretty heavily hinted at that she did rape him later on.
And I think this is where I lose a lot of people. People see feeling bad for a character as the same as endorsing their actions, and it's not. A character can have a painful backstory and go through really crappy things and still be an awful person. These two things are not mutually exclusive and it is possible to acknowledge them both.
I feel bad for Calypso, her unrequited love for Ody paired with the fact that she's completely shut off from the world make my heart hurt for her. I also know she's a terrible person who put Odysseus through hell for her own selfish desires, what she did was horrible and I don't support her in the slightest.
But for some odd reason, when someone mentions feeling the slightest twinge of pity for her, they get dog-piled on and called an abuser, an enabler, a rapist- pretty much every criminal title in the book.
You can feel bad for someone and still recognize that they're not a good person. And it's a little bit scary thinking about how difficult it is for this fandom to understand that.
People are not black and white, we're meant to think in shades of gray, we dont just swing back and forth between two absolutes like a pendulum. Sympathy isn't acceptance.

The Moka's weren't fair to Tsukune in the Swim Club Arc
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not once did they ever tell Tsukune that water hurt them.
This is largely a communication error on Outer Moka's part, she's the only one that could have told him given she's in control of Inner's body, but Inner only made things worse by hitting Tsukune for not understanding vampire biology.
The Moka's knew that Tsukune was a human, and Outer Moka personally grew up in the human world, so she was more than aware of human misconceptions about vampires.
Instead of explaining her situation though, she got jealous and freaked out.
The Moka's failed poor Tsukune here, he is so far out of his depth at this point in the story, completely surrounded by people who would rip him to shreds if they knew what he was, and he only stayed for Outer.
And they punish him for not having prior knowledge on an entirely different (and what he thought at first was nonexistent) species.
I love Inner Moka, but she really kinda sucked in this chapter. As with Outer Moka.

Just pluck my heart out why don't you 🥲 Aziiiii my beautiful baby! I love him so much I wish he got more love! This is so cute ❤️
"ARC trooper Fives was the best friend I've ever had. I regret that he is not here with us now."
"Me too, AZI-3. Me too"
Tumblr media
Now that AZI-3 is part of the Bad Batch crew, I will be severely depressed if he and Echo don't have a talk about Fives at some point.
Also, I have a headcanon that Fives talked about Echo when he was unconscious, getting his chip removed, and now, AZI-3 is like "oh! You're the clone he was talking about!"
Lineart below the cut, since I always feel like that's better than the finished, colored piece
Tumblr media
Goodness I have so many feelings.
I absolutely hate coloring, and I know I'm not very good at it. So, if you want to color this, feel free. Just tag me so I can love you properly 😘

Sooo, we're all in agreement that Arlo's a bottom right?
This dude is so much a bottom he's literally underground.
Like, the entire series he's been saddled with this crushing responsibility, even forced to take on other people's responsibilities. He's always working working working, he does other people's jobs for them and while the group goofs off, he's the one actually taking the situation seriously.
Spending so much time and energy with everything, it really wouldn't do him any good to have to take the reigns in intimate moments as well.
Idc that he's 6'3, tall people need coddling too. Let this man bottom for Christ's sake.
Johnny-boy 100% tops him.

So, I don't like the merge. At all.
The merge is, in my opinion, the gross destruction of Inner Moka as a person.
Everyone is special in their own way, they have their own thoughts, feelings, memories and experiences that they build throughout their lives. These memories and experiences are observed by our consciousness, our awareness of ourselves, and used to create who we are as people.
To merge two people is to take all that they are and mush them together. This, of course, doesn't really work. When you strip someone of who they are, you strip them of themselves.
If two people merged together, everything they were, are and could be would be lost.
Say mergee 1 had a tough childhood, they had a bad homelife, didn't have any friends and couldn't count on anybody but themselves. Through trial and error, they push through all the bad in their life, work hard in school to get good grades, get a great scholarship and land a fantastic college, later on using that as a means to get a high paying career and a stable financial home life, along the way making making a close-knit friend group who they can truly count on to be there for them. That's a huge accomplishment, they had to work to better themselves and by god they did, and their experiences that shaped them and made them who they are, those belong to them. It's their life, their pain, and their gratification.
Mergee 2 is the exact opposite of this, mergee 2 had a wonderful childhood, loving parents, fantastic friends and an all around stable life. Despite how well the people around them were, mergee 2 could never do anything. They lacked motivation, they couldn't understand anything and no matter how hard they tried they just couldn't do well in school. Over time, their friends started to drift away, starting new lives of their own and leaving mergee 2 behind. Mergee 2, despite having a better beginning, is now suffering from financial issues and social issues.
So what happens when these two completely different people with opposite experiences merge together? Everything becomes a big muddled mess of memories and experiences. These experiences overlap and mix in with each other and now there's two completely different lives mulling around in one person's head. All of mergee 1's accomplishments, their grief over their painful beginning, all the work they put in to being better, it's not theirs anymore. Mergee 2's wonderful memories of their happy childhood, their family, all of a sudden it's not their family anymore. Mergee 1's friends that they make over time, they're not their friends anymore. Mergee 2's struggle to make friends and a decent wage, it's not their struggle anymore. All these experiences that were once theirs are no longer theirs.
Merging destroys ownership of oneself. Memories, experiences, lives, all gone. Melded into one greater overarching being.
A consciousness is the awareness of you. So mergee 1 has an awareness of themself, and mergee 2 has an awareness of themself. Awareness is how we know we exist, it's what dictates our lives as ours. It's how we recognize ourselves. So when mergee 1's consciousness merges with mergee 2's consciousness, their awarenesses of themselves and their existence get merged together as well. This creates a new awareness of oneself. Mergee 1 no longer has a consciousness, mergee 2 no longer has a consciousness, but who they merged into does.
Merging creates a new person. It's like a metaphysical birth. So when two people merge, who they become is not who they were.
Simply put, if the Moka's merged, then the Moka at the end of the series is not either of the Moka's we were following throughout. It is a completely new Moka. And Inner Moka is gone.
When Inner Moka merges with Outer Moka, it takes all they are as people and mushes them together into a new being, a new being that replaces Inner Moka.
I feel rather strongly about the merge, I know for a fact that if I were to merge with someone I would no longer be me. Of course, reality isn't quite the same as a fictional universe, and the merge might have different repercussions in a fictional universe than out here. Rosario + Vampire is not one of these universes though.
Tumblr media
The very existence of Outer Moka proves that the merged Moka is a seperate person from Inner Moka.
Tumblr media
Outer Moka is the erased consciousness of Akasha, imbued with the altered memories of Inner Moka. And yet, despite being Akasha's alter ego, she still became her own person seperate from Akasha. If Outer Moka was literally a blank Akasha, and still gained her own individuality, then by the same logic, the Moka which was created from the merging of Inner and Outer Moka is also her own seperate person.
A new consciousness is a new person, even in the Rosario + Vampire universe.
So, if the Moka's merge, Inner Moka is gone.
And this is not a fair ending for Inner Moka.
Inner Moka went through hell. There are no two ways about it.
She had to watch her mother get eaten by Alucard, from the age of 10 she was put into a deep slumber, forced to sleep while another girl used her body as her own and lived her life as her. She was completely stripped of her bodily autonomy. Come age 15, and she's forcibly called out and locked away again for the sole purpose of fighting, having to watch from the sidelines as the Outer Moka made friends, fell in love and got to experience a (relatively normal for monsters) high school life. She fell in love with a boy who was completely and utterly taken by the Outer Moka, and tried to put barriers between herself and him because she was scared of getting too close. She had to watch her mother literally evaporate into nothingness and take her clone mother/sister/rival/jailer- Outer Moka- with her.
And just when she was finally released from the rosary, when she finally had true freedom in front of her, after all the hell and turmoil she went through, after not truly being able to live for the past 7 years of her life, her reward for everything she overcame was to be merged into another person and replaced. Not just in body, but in soul.
That is not a fair ending.
It's not fair for Moka to go through all that and then be stripped of herself at the end. To have her autonomy, soul, consciousness, individuality, and identity utterly destroyed in the creation of a new Moka.
And I find it somewhat counterintuitive when readers say they love how happy and free Inner Moka is at the end only to turn around and not only believe the merge happened, but agree wholeheartedly with it as well.
There are a lot of things in life that can be simultaneously true, these are not one of them.
If the Moka's merged, then Inner Moka cannot be happy at the end, and she most certainly can't be free. Because the merge, at its core, is inherently the destruction of "Inner Moka". She does not exist to be happy and free.
Merging is not fair, and it's not free. It's the erasure of self and the bastardization of individuality. As someone who values these things and believes people should be free to be themselves, the merge is an extremely sour end to what was otherwise a good manga.
