Hey Loaf long time no see,
Are there any updates on A Salmon Good Time?
No updates, as of late!
I've mostly been juggling between other creative projects, and trying to decide which ones I should seriously sit down with and prioritize, so this one's been left in hiatus for a while

Hey Loaf, I hope today is going great!
I wanted to ask how Cohozuna became a king salmonid? I know in the games it is based on intense training but I wondered how that would translate here. Could any salmonid become a king salmonid in A Salmon Good Time?
Thanks for the ask.
Have an amazing day.
Hi, my apologies for the super late response!!!!
For this, any Salmonid can become a king- it's mainly based on how many salmonids trust and respect them. It wasn't until Mr. Grizz's involvement + him building Grizzco Industries when the salmonids considered training, after they made the trade agreement with the Octarians for machinery/armor to gear themselves during salmon runs
But now that Grizzco started running business, that was when kings were only elected as kings based solely on their strength/how resilient they are even after intensive training!

how’s omega-3 doing in this au… what’s their role im so curious 😙
Omega-3 will definitely make an appearance in this AU! In fact, they'll actually play a big supporting role and have some importance to the plot later in the story
This story also includes the rise of Omega-3 before they became famous: they earn the Omega-3 title after a musical piece they perform (which is later named Deluge Dirge) during the final fight that gave the salmonids an extra boost to drive away Mr. Grizz in the AU

How do you do the Don Bluth artstyle? You’ve gotten so good! This blog is an inspiration to me
Thank you, anon!!!
I think I've answered a similar Ask some months ago, since my answer will feel kinda similar to it, but I highly recommend watching some of the Don Bluth films, looking at screenshots from any of the movies, and doing artstyle studies from it!
Studies like practicing redrawing scenes/characters, or practicing the style without reference and then comparing it with the movie style, to see what you can change so it has a similar vibe to the Don Bluth artstyle! My favorite thing to practice are the facial expressions, how they squash and stretch, etc! And also focusing on some of the artstyle "quirks" (how Bluth draws hands, the thickness in lines, the folds in clothes/the body, fur/hair, etc)
Back around 2015-18, my main artstyle was heavily Don Bluth inspired. (My 2015 art on left -> 2018 art on the right)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in a way it took me around 9 years of (drawing animals only off-and-on) Don Bluth-inspired drawings to get to where I am now!
I don't really have a more visual answer to this, as there's no right or wrong way to achieve an artstyle you want. But yeah, TL;DR, by best piece of advice to achieve an artstyle you want (for any kind, including this one) is to Study it! Practice it, become it!

Will the inklings or octolings ever show up In ASGT?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is by far the MOST asked question I've received! 👀
I'd answer them all individually, but my answer would just be the same LOL, so I compiled all similar questions I can find into this one. Some of these are over several months old, my apologies for not answering them sooner!
Do the Grizzco workers appear in A Salmon Good Time? The answer is... YES!
While the story aspect of ASGT isn't fleshed out yet, I do have a general idea of the story's direction, and I do have plans for them to make an appearance! However they won't be a big focus of the story, so they're mainly just side characters.
They'll look something like this! It's a very rough/first concept sketch, so this will likely change overtime (the example is an Inkling, but Octolings also make an appearance as coworkers):
Tumblr media
The coworkers debut around a point in the story (likely the middle/climax) when Mr. Grizz's true intentions reveal and he creates Grizzco Industries in his pursuit to gather Golden Eggs: the key ingredient to creating Fuzzy Ooze that'll boost his efforts into restore Mammalians.
Now that I think about it, I think it'd be fun to see like maybe one or two frequent coworkers who act as Mr. Grizz's henchmen of sorts, but they're very very bad at their job. ("I'm on it, boss!" and one of them slips and a dozen Golden Eggs go flying out of their hands into the water). But of course this would be after the story's climax when Grizzco is created!

I stumbled upon this blog completely by accident and tbh I have no idea what any of it means but your art is cool and I love the concept so just wanted to say keep up the good work ! Have a great day 💕
Thank you so much! The artsyle in this blog isn't my usual artstyle and my project for this is pretty much inactive, but it's nice to know this is the first blog of mines you came across!!

Here is a scene where Sammy's dad, Neil Finn, makes his first appearance! Neil is a salmonid that works as a Snatcher. He works overtime gathering lost Golden Eggs to bring back to sea. Looks like he might need a coffee break!
Meanwhile, Sammy has his nose buried in a good book. Looks to be an Octarian mechanics book he discovered... 👀

How do you nail that movie screencap effect thingamajig?? I'm a sucker for VHS-animation looking stuff but sometimes fiddling with blending modes, gaussian blur, noise, ntscQT etc. just doesn't feel right.
For me, I love experimenting with a mix of using blending modes and using ntscQT, but I definitely get the feeling of it still not feeling right despite using those methods!
I'll do my best with explaining how I go about achieving the look! The art software I use is Paint Tool Sai 2 (but any art software with blending modes + layers will do!). Apologies in advance if this is too wordy haha
1.) I draw the usual setup- a background with a character or so. I usually flatten all the layers into one but, for this case, I just only flattened the layer the character's on:
Tumblr media
2.) I duplicate the character layer, blur it, set its blending mode to "Lighten", and adjust the opacity as needed before merging the two layers together. I duplicate again, blur again, set the mode to "Darken", adjust opacity, and merge again!
Tumblr media
3.) (1st pic) Once I do that, I duplicate & blur the character layer again, then move it a bit to the side (any direction is fine; for this I moved it to the right). Then I set the moved layer's mode to "Color"! After that, I add a drop shadow behind the character layer to give it the look of a traditional animation cel being used.
(2nd pic) Next, I flatten ALL the layers now into one layer, duplicate it and blur it greatly + set blurred layer mode to "Saturation" & move it in any direction before merging all layers again!! lots of duplicating and merging LOL!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.) OK THE LAYER DUPLICATION + MERGING PROCESS IS FINISHED FINALLY! Now we just adjust the colors!
I like to lower the Contrast and raise the Depth, though the adjustments can vary with each piece, depending on how much of a effect you want! Image on right includes the settings I used for this. (I also added a noise layer, but that's optional)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5.) And for the final step.... make the image a smaller size and save as a JPEG/JPG file!!! This should somewhat achieve the low-quality crunch look!
Tumblr media
This step is entirely optional, but you can take the JPEG image and add it to ntscQT to mess around with different settings! Here's one I put together:

A Salmon Good Time! | Frequently asked questions
Hey y’all, it’s Loaf here!
My activity on this blog is inactive due to my focus on my other blogs + other projects, but this salmonid project is still a part of my interest, so it’s not going anywhere!
I know I should stop apologizing so much about this, but do forgive me for the lack of responses to Asks. I have asks that’re over 4 months old that I just havent gotten to answer yet, especially if they require a quick doodle from me.
Throughout my asks, I’ve received some of the same questions asked by multiple people, so I thought I’d create an F.A.Q for that!
🐟 FAQ 🐟
Q. “Will the Octarians/Octoling soldiers make an appearance in ASGT?”
A. Yes! As the Octarians and Salmonids are canonically in a trade agreement — power eggs in exchange for machinery/weaponry — the Octarians do make an important appearance in the story. In fact… Sammy is the one to have the idea of the trade agreement, thanks to his interest in engineering.
Q. “What about the Grizzco workers? Will the Inklings/Octolings appear in the story?”
A. Also a ‘yes’! They will appear during the climax of the story, where Mr. Grizz begins working on bringing his Grizzco business to life.
Q. “When does ASGT take place in the Splatoon timeline?”
A. A Salmon Good Time! occurs before the existence of Grizzco Industries. The story is a retelling of how how Mr. Grizz created the business, the beginnings of the Octarian & Salmonid trade agreement, the first Grizzco shift ever, and many other beginnings in Salmonid culture!
⭐️ - End of FAQ!
These are the top three questions I’ve frequently received throughout the months. I thought I’d answer those here this way. I’ll update the list if I ever receive any more frequent questions in Asks!

Hello Loaf,
I just wanted to ask about your philosophy on shading and color. I noticed some of your works have shading while others don’t. Or am I overthinking the process of coloring and shading? Sometimes I think I might be selling myself short on the on where I am at and that I might already know how to do it. I noticed in your speed paint from away back, I think you used fill coloring. Is that what you usually do?
Thanks a lot for the help.
To make this ask less of a drag. Do you have any favorite A Salmon Good Time characters or do you like them all the same?
One last thing, please let me know if these asks are too long and tedious.
For my movie scene illustrations, most of the time the characters are drawn with flat coloring. For the ones that do include shading/lighting, it's usually when there's a strong, distinct light source (like a spotlight on stage) or to convey strong emotion (joy, sadness, fear) within a scene.
Another instance I use shading is for general full illustrations, like promotional art for example (or like my current profile picture... which I feel needs a good update, so I'll most likely redraw it haha)!
But in most cases where I don't use shading, it's usually for quick sketches, character reference sheets, or small doodles for when I just wanna get the idea down and not focus much on details/light sources!
That's correct! When I get to the coloring part, I use a magic wand tool to select the areas I wanna color, and then use the fill tool to add the colors in.
Oh, don't worry about the asks being long! I'm always happy to help— I like to think someone else seeing these could find these kinds of tips/advice asks helpful to them as well! ^^
(Hmmm... my favorite A Salmon Good Time character? At this point in the project, I actually still have a few characters I've yet to reveal. But with the cast I have now, I wanna say my current favorites are Goldie and Frank!!! ❤️)

Hello again Loaf, :)
I wanted to ask if you had any tips on making a Don Bluth like style. So far my progress has been going good, I know there is still room for improvement though.
Thanks a lot for the previous tips and advice as well.
I know I have said this before but I really hope I did not flood this blog with asks overtime.
These pictures below are my latest practice drawings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi again! Oh WOW you really made improvements since the last time I saw your drawings 🤯 Great work here!!! 🎉🎉🎉
For the Don Bluth style in particular, a detail I'd notice about the way characters are drawn in the film is that there's often wrinkle lines or zigzag lines!
'Wrinkle lines' are often drawn where the body bends/curves (like under the neck, under the wrists, etc); while 'zigzag lines' often appear where there's a crease or variation, like clothes, hair, or along the outlines inside the character (like a fur/scale/feather/etc pattern, clothe designs, etc)
I'll have to find some screenshots from some of the Bluth films later on as examples, but for now here's a few that appear in my own attempts at the Bluth style! (I circled where the wrinkle lines and zigzags appear)

hope this isn't an annoying message but I didn't see you post about it - make sure to toggle on to prevent AI scraping in your blog settings and all sub blog settings.. Tumblr just sold all our data to midjourney and I don't want your hard work to get eaten by lazy ass ai "artists"
no anon im so glad u sent this ask because what the fuck???? at this point im honestly not surprised ugh,,, i had to speedrun to all my blogs' settings.
RELAYING WHAT ANON SAID TO THOSE THAT AREN'T AWARE:
tumblr is now allowing midjourney to be able to train its AI on artwork posted on blogs BY DEFAULT.
so if you DO NOT want your art to be trained on these fuckass machines:
go to your blog settings FOR EVERY BLOG YOU OWN!! (NOT JUST YOUR MAIN BLOG, BUT YOUR SIDE BLOGS TOO)
find the "Prevent third-party sharing" setting and TURN IT ON ASAP
It should look like this (example used from my splatoon side blog):

What's this? Sammy got turned into a spinning 3d model!
Tumblr media
I recently started using Blockbench for making lowpoly 3d models, and had a thought: how would A Salmon Good Time look if it had a video game adaptation? Surely like the game its universe is based in (Salmon Run in the Splatoon series). But I've imagined if ASGT was its own standalone universe, it'd be a Nintendo 64-styled game!
This model is a work in progress! Once I finish modeling/rigging Sammy, I'll made a 3d model of Frank!

Hey guys, it's Loaf here!
I've been pretty much inactive on this blog/project for the past several months. While it's already February, I never got a chance to say this here yet: Happy New Year! ✨🎉 I hope January has been well for y'all!!
On my end, I've last mentioned here that my activity would be heavily dependent on my "college era", with me trying out college for the first time (I took it online). A few months ago, I had taken finals and finished my Fall term. After that, it's my Spring term.
Well, I have an update on that: ...I dropped out!
As someone who's grown up with a sedentary lifestyle (meaning I'm mostly spending my time either laying around, sitting a lot at the computer desk, not physically active, etc) and as someone with a very sporadic sleep schedule, I realize I never really made room in my life to take on academics again. I was never interested in college to begin with or with getting a degree.
Maybe in the distant future I'd try college again, when my life's more in order...? Who knows, LOL
Also in terms of inactivity: my focus has been on other things, like just drawing general fanart and working on other smaller projects.
This inactivity does not reflect my feelings towards A Salmon Good Time. I'm still very, very passionate about this silly project, and have no plans to abandon it! As I've mentioned above, my attention's just been on other things recently.
I feel like I've said this a lot, but I do apologize for the lack of responses to Asks! I've looked through my Ask inbox and see the questions & requests that've been sent to me over a month or several ago... I will get to answering those eventually!
Until then, keep an eye out for some movie scene drawings, answered Asks, and a small treat that'll be posted right after this post... 👀

Good afternoon
I was wondering if the salmonids in A Salmon Good Time battle the same way as they do in the game? I remember that one of your first ASGT posts saying how the salmon may leave the casino to protect the golden eggs.
Here’s the funny part of this ask. I can hardly imagine your version of Cohozuna belly flopping the enemy. Does he battle in the same way like in the game or more like a fist fight? To make this even funnier/interesting I always imagined Cohozuna having a brother that did fight like cohozuna does in the game or a mixture of the two. Anyways thanks and your art looks amazing. I hope you found this ask as funny/ entertaining as I did.
Hey there!
All the Salmonids do fight like how they do in-game! I think ASGT Cohozuna would fight similar to Cohocks (with how they weild bigger pans than the others), but it would be funny to see him belly flop enemies like the game version! It could be a fun reference to the game when he does it once in the movie, like "hey that's the move Cohozuna does in the game!"
Thank you for sending this ask, it was definitely a fun one haha 😂😂😂
