He wanted to twist his fingers into the curls at the base of Abelâs neck to hold him close. A part of him didnât want to let him go at all but they now had two hungry boys to feed and themselves so he let go, letting Abel lead the way to their boys.
âYou could let me cook one day.âÂ
Taking the phone from the kitchen counter, he followed behind Abel. Lingering and watching the interactions. A small smile tugged at his lips when Richie spoke up like they didnât know what he enjoyed. The order was strange to him, mostly because it was what Toby would have ordered for them either way, like Seth already fit.Â
âI like meat pizzas too.â He spoke softly before     handing the phone to Abel.Â
He smiled at Toby as he took the phone, happy that he already found something in common with the new little boy in their home. Abel was so used to ordering pizza he knew the number off by heart, quickly dialing and making the order to be delivered to their door.Â
âYou can cook if you want, Iâm only trying to get    better at it since I usually cook anyway.â
Abel could hear Richie already telling Seth about how often he burns things, making the man grumble quietly even though it was completely true. There would be lots of things Seth would learn about their home, and the most important would be that it is a safe place for any feelings and thoughts, and nothing left this home that wasnât meant to. Not that he expected the little boy to go around telling people of his new family, anyway, even if he knew what was happening. That was possibly a talk heâd need to have with him after dinner.

There was a lot that he wanted to say but Tobias never knew how to find the words. His fingers tightened into a fist and then relaxed again. It was his way of taking a deep breath and moving on. It would be an adjustment, not just for them but for Richie and now Seth. They had so many secrets that stayed locked up in their apartment, it was their safe place and to let someone new in was a big step. His fingers pressed into the back of Abelâs neck, holding him close even when they parted.
âYou should ask him⌠Seth, what type of pizza he likes.    For the record, it already smells like burnt.âÂ
The fingers on his neck was all the signal of emotion he needed from Toby, the firm press of fingers against his spine. He liked Tobyâs possessiveness, even when he knew that wasnât all it was, but he didnât care right now, trying to get out of the tension that still lingered.Â
âI donât think the cooking lessons are helping that      much, or Iâm reading the recipe wrong.â
With a new mission in mind - to make Seth feel at home in their home - Abel made his way into the living room to find the two little boys drawing and colouring together. Kneeling down, he gave both of them a smile.
âWeâre going to have pizza. Richie, I know what you     like but, Seth, whatâs your favourite kind of pizza?â
âMy favourite is mushroom and cheese.â Richie chimed in.
A few seconds of quiet thought before Seth spoke.
     âI like meat pizzas.â
âMushroom and cheese and meat it is.â

No sound left him, too afraid to move or draw attention to himself. Although, the bullies had already seen him and moved forward quickly. He recoiled, waiting for the scathing blow that would be words or fist but it never came. They had stopped and Abel was movie forward instead. It happened quickly, almost in a blur, fists flew and sounds of pain came tumbling from his tormentors. His eyes widened, surprised by Abelâs words. Out of the two of them, Tobias was the one who lashed out.Â
A part of him, the part that he knew was wrong, the one his parents saw in him, that part of him was turned on by the violent act and the taunt muscles in his shoulders. When Abel took his hand, he didnât hesitate in following him without saying a word. They were always so good at being private about their feelings, they had to be, but the way Abel had acted and the anger had made Tobias crave him.Â
He tugged on Abelâs hand, pulling him close. Leaning up he kissed him roughly, lingering on his lips.Â
              âThank you.âÂ
The kiss caught him off guard, not expecting it but certainly not unhappy about it. It was his instinct to return the kiss as roughly as he was kissed, leaving him breathless by the time they broke apart. It made the sting in his knuckles worth it and though some of his anger had melted away, Tobyâs lack of glasses reminded him and he had more reason to go back and beat the bullies more.Â
         âAnything for you, Toby.â
Pulling the keys out of his pocket, he unlocked the car and opened the door for his brother, moving to place his backpack in the backseat. Abel was reminded why he had to do this, why he had to bring Tobias home. He wasnât complete without his heart and soul, his other half.Â
âAre you hungry? We can get you something to eat?â

      Heâs my son.Â
That words echoed through his mind. His jaw clenched, tightening before he relaxed again. There had been a time when Toby had come home with a child and just declared that he would be their son. The time that they had broken up wasnât one that either of them talked about and whilst Tobias knew about Abelâs relationship, they had never spoken about it. And now, there was a child in their living room with their son that was living proof. He was silent for a long moment before he decided to speak.
âOkay. Iâll buy a bed tomorrow.âÂ
It wasnât easy but Abel was determined and he was right, they couldnât not look after him. Even for someone like him, he wasnât in the habit of hurting children who didnât deserve it.Â
    âShould we order pizza?âÂ
He knew Toby wouldnât argue, but he also knew he wouldnât like it. Their break up had been a rough time, their parents forcing their way back into their lives and reclaiming control. Abel had missed Toby every second theyâd been apart and the relationship he had tried to work with fell apart because no matter how much he tried, he always wanted to return to Tobias. Eventually, he had and he could never leave him again. Reaching up, Abel kissed Toby lightly.
âThank you. And yes, I already ruined another cooking    pan, I donât want everything to smell burnt again.â

Going home was a thought that made Toby uneasy but staying didnât seem like an option anymore. He had never seen Abel so determined about anything and he didnât want to stay at the school any longer. The weeks without Abel were long and miserable, he felt happy to leave. With the bag packed as best as it could be. His eyes shut for a moment, enjoying the feeling of Abelâs lips on his, god, he had missed it and him. âIâd like that,â he agreed.Â
In the hall, he lead Abel down the corridor and steps that would lead them to the front of the school and the car park. Even though his face ached and his body hurt, he found himself smiling to himself. He couldnât remember the last time he had smiled. It all faded away as quickly as it came when the four boys who loved to torture him stepped into their path. Two were taller than him, both with dark hair and cruel faces but not as cruel as the other two. Tobiasâs reaction was immediate, he cringed, his step faltering until Abel was in front of him but he still couldnât block him from their line of sight.Â
No words were necessary when his brother slipped behind him, using him as a shield.  As Toby grew older, he would be known for his intense glare, but he had to learn it from  someone, and that person was Abel. The closer the other boys got, the darker his glare  got, muscles tensing and hand clenching into a fist. One of the four stepped up, ready to  speak but Abel didnât give him the chance, immediately swinging a punch that connected  to his jaw and knocked him back. His rage flared up and, oh, how he hatted these boys  for ruining Tobyâs beautiful face, for bullying him and scaring him.Â
âIf you EVER hurt my brother again, I will come back and    break all of your noses so badly, theyâll never heal properly.â
Of course, he wasnât done. Turning toward another of the boys, he swung again, fist meeting  his ribs. He had to hold himself back, not completely unleashing a fury of punches and keeping  the brothers from leaving. Glare still plastered to his face, he took Tobyâs hand, ignoring the  throbbing in his fist from the punch to the jaw as he led him away to the car.
âLetâs get you glasses, first.â He said once they were close to the car, giving Toby a soft smile.

His eyes continued to narrow as he stared at the children playing. It wasnât that he was angry about the boyâs presence, or about the easy way Richie accepted him into their home and shared his things. Confusion made him stare, as though he was trying to work out a puzzle but he was getting absolutely nowhere. When he felt Abelâs hand slip into his, he left the boys alone and followed without a word.Â
There were many questions that came to mind. Abel seemed so determined, like there was no other option. So the biggest question was who was he and why was he here. He was silent for a long moment, staring at his brother as though trying to understand what he was thinking or what was going through his mind.Â
âWho is he?â He asked, finally.Â
   âHeâs my son.â
Richie was his son, there was no fighting that, Abel would never think of him as anything else. The thing was, Seth, this little boy whoâd arrived at their door, was also his, biologically. He couldnât turn away a young boy who had nowhere else to go, not when he was his father.Â
âThe woman I dated when we were separated, she got pregnant and    didnât tell me, apparently. The letter said she doesnât want to take    care of him anymore, so heâs going to stay with us now. Iâm not going    to send him away, the poor boy. His mother might be horrible, but Iâm    not. We can get another bed for him, for now he can sleep in Richieâs    room on a cot.â
Even if Toby didnât like it, Abel had already made his decision and there would be no changing it. He took responsibility for the boy being abandoned, a boy he didnât knew existed until now.

Tobias was clearly confused at how a letter went from the boy being a stranger to a child who was allowed inside their home and to play with Richie, their child. Of course the boy wasnât a risk to Richieâs safety but it was still curious. His gaze settled onto Abel, who avoided his own. Still, he didnât say anything, not wanting the boy to over hear. He grew up knowing what it was like knowing people were talking about you.Â
He left Abel in the hallway to check on the boys. It was a strange sight. Richie, who never shared, had already handed over his pencils and some paper so they could draw together. It seemed in just a few minutes, this boy had arrived and taken over the apartment and Toby wasnât sure what to do about it. It wasnât an intrusion but it felt odd. Especially without an explanation.Â
Right away, he knew Toby wasnât happy with what was going on. He wasnât going to be able to keep the truth to himself for very long. For now, Abel had the chance to watch Richie and Seth immediately get along, bringing a smile to his face. His chance to enjoy it wasnât a long one, as he noticed Tobyâs staring, and not just staring, his intense almost glare version. Taking his hand, he pulled him into the kitchen.
Except now that he had to explain, he didnât know how to start. How do you tell someone that the woman you dated while being broken up with them had your child and now was dropping him off at your doorstep, making the little boy your problem? Well, you could say that, but he didnât want Toby to immediately have a negative image of Seth.Â
âHeâs going to stay with us now.â He finally said, deciding to start there.

Tobias wanted to protest and say that he couldnât do that to Abel, not after everything he had already done for him. Nothing came out though because in the end, Toby was selfish. There was only one thing he loved in this world and it was Abel. He wouldnât be giving him up without a fight, not again. If this was his world without Abel, there would be no wasting his second chance. âWeâll find a way to make it work,â he said, voice full of determination to make that true. Unconsciously, he pushed at the bridge of his nose where his glasses would sit. âThank you. I donât like not having them."Â
He felt, rather than saw the contacts case pressed into his hand. At least with contacts he could help a little. Moving to where he knew the mirror to be and put the contacts in, one at a time. Once the first was in, things became easier and he could see a lot better even if the contacts irritated his eyes. Everything blinked back into focus as he turned back to Abel. "Iâd like that. I donât like contacts.â He scrunched his noise at the idea of cat bandages. âMaybe something less colourful?"Â
The mess was quickly being packed up and despite his urge to straighten all the clothes Abel was shoving into his back pack, he chose to collect other items. His phone, his laptop and chargers, his books and anything else he might need. Never being one for personal trinkets, there was only a photo of Abel and Tobias to collect and place on top of the other clothes that has been placed into the bag already. "I think thatâs enough. Anything Iâve left behind can be forwarded on."Â
There was no time for neat folding or organizing his clothes by shirt and pants. Abel wanted to take his brother from this place as quickly as he could and never look back. He was going to make this weekend about the two of them and he was going to make their parents let Toby come back or move out trying. There was nothing that was going to stop him, nothing would quell his anger. Tobias was the last person to deserve any of this.Â
With the bag full with various items and clothes, he zipped it up and turned to Toby. âJust one more thing.â Closing the space between them, he gave Toby a soft kiss on the lips. âThere, now I think I can take you home. After we spend the afternoon together like we planned, of course.â Abel slipped the backpack straps over his shoulder before leading Toby outside, though he already had forgotten how he was meant to leave and would need his brother to lead the way.Â

He knew nothing about the boy and why he was asking for Abel and the look he shot Abel told him so. He held up the letter that had his brotherâs name on it and handed it over. Talking wasnât his forte, especially not to children who werenât Richie.Â
âAsk him.â
Abel took the envelope and quickly pulled out the enclosed letter, reading it careful once, and then twice. There was no need to read it a third time, there was no way this could be a joke. âOh.â was the only thing he said at first, the single word coming out softly. Eventually, once he had thought over the situation a tiny bit more, he knelt down in front of the boy.Â
âHi, Seth. Do you want to come inside and play with Richie?â
The little boy happily bounced inside, leaving his backpack by the door and leaving Abel with Toby. He was hoping toby wouldnât ask, but he was sure to wonder if Seth started living with them without any sign of leaving.

When there was a knock at the door, Toby was sure they werenât expecting anyone to come by. Everyone he loved and cared for where here. Abel was somewhere in the apartment and Richie was on the floor next to him, legs folded underneath him as they coloured sheep together.Â
The knock became insistent and he got to his feet, promising to return. When he opened the door, he didnât know what to expect but a small boy with Abelâs eyes wasnât it.Â
âHello.âÂ
Thereâs a letter thrust at him and in big letters, âAbelâ is written across it.Â
âAbel. Thereâs someone at the door for you.
Now that his attempt at making a nice family dinner had been ruined, Abel was busying himself cleaning up the disaster, knowing heâd hear if anything went wrong in the living room. He didnât expect any problems, Toby was good with Richie, as much as he could be. When he heard his name, he left his dish rag on the counter and went to the door, though the little boy he found there wasnât what he was expecting at all.Â
   âWhoâs this?â

Dropping his head to Abelâs shoulder, he clung to his brother. He had missed Abel so much and now that they were together, it was going to be so much harder to let him go again. Tobias was more angry that he couldnât protect himself. This type of guilt wasnât what he wanted to give Abel. Just because his parents had sent him away didnât mean that he shouldnât be able to look after himself. Yet, there he was, covered in bruises and cuts that marked his face. âYou canât protect me from everything.â It came out soft, a gentle tone to his voice as he tried to comfort his brother.Â
His eyes widened and he quickly shook his head. âYou canât, Abel. Our parentsâŚâ He trailed off. As much as he wanted to reassure Abel that he would be okay, he couldnât. His parents expectations were weighing on his shoulders and he wanted to do right by them so he could come home. âWe canât, Abel. What if they kick you out? I canât live there without you.â He might not be okay at the academy but without Abel, Tobias wouldnât survive his parents. His resolve was quickly weakening with each gentle touch. âI miss my old glasses.â
Abel seemed determined though and Tobias wasnât going to stand in his way, especially if it meant they got to be together. âItâs under my bed.â He answered, pointing in the direction the bed was. âI would help⌠but I still canât see.â Then a thought occurred to him. âI have contacts, in the side pocket of the bag.â He already felt completely useless and without sight, he only felt worse. Abel shouldnât have to do everything for him.
Abel stopped his movements to look at his brother, his features void of all emotions except determination. "If they kick me out, I'll take you with me wherever I end up going. They don't deserve you." He didn't know where they would go, but he would find them aplace. Even if they had to stay with someone for a while, until they could find their own place, he would make it work. Abel had no problems with dropping out of school to support them if it meant Toby would stay with him. His expression softened, as did his heart, as his brother spoke again. "I miss them too. Hopefully we'll find a new pair just like 'em."
Reaching as far as he could under the bed, he waved his arm around until his fingers found purchase, pulling the bag out into the open. He dug around for the contacts, carefully pulling them out and carrying them over to Toby, presenting them in his palm. "We'll pick you up some glasses on the way home. " His eyes flickered over his brother's face. "And maybe some bandages. We could probably find some with cats on them?" he added, smiling a little.
He started by packing clothes, lifting the folded garments out of the dresser drawers and dropping them into the bag. He was trying to keep it semi-organised, but he was also partially in a hurry, not too worry about making it look nice. So long as everything fit, he would be happy. At least without worrying about being too neat, he was getting it all packed quickly. "What other stuff should I make sure to pack?"

Whilst he couldnât see Abelâs face, the small noise and silence that followed was sign enough. A hand dragged through his hair, trying to pull it back and make it neat. Everything was out of order and now he had upset Abel because of it. His hands itched to fix himself but he didnât know what he looked like or what was out of order. He felt small and insignificant. Everything he had done since he had arrived at the school had only worked against him. But he had tried so hard. He was catching up with his work and behaving because he wanted to go home. Not that it mattered, he could tell his parents about what was happening and theyâd think he deserved it.
With Abelâs arms around him, Tobias allowed himself to relax against his hold, burying himself against his chest. His arms around his middle, holding him tightly. It was like a wave of emotions over came him in that moment and he hugged his brother tightly. He had missed him so much. Tobias had spent days and weeks denying how lonely he was and how much he missed Abel. The letters and calls seemed like a disappointing replacement now that he had the real thing again. âIâm sorry, Abel.â And he was, he should have told him what was happening but he was ashamed that he couldnât take care of himself.
Abelâs touch stung but Toby refused to flinch away, he had missed it so much. Even the hug had hurt but Toby craved Abelâs touch, something he had never experienced before and he knew it was because they had been apart. As soon as Abel spoke, Tobyâs expression hardened. âThis isnât your fault.â He said immediately. Even if he couldnât see Abelâs expression, he could hear it in his voice. âYou canât protect me from everything.â Â
"But I should be able to protect you from this." He couldn't bear to see the swelling, the bruises and the cuts on Toby's face, but his eyes remained on his, missing being this close to him and seeing the beautiful color of his eyes. Abel didn't want to let go of him ever again. He'd always done all he could to make sure any potential bullies knew that messing with Tobias meant dealing with the big brother, but here, at this stupid academy, he couldn't do that. That's when he decided.
"I'm taking you home. I don't care what our parents say, I can't bear to see you like this." Already, he was determined enough that nothing was going to stop him. He would sooner join the military than stand by while Toby gets hurt. "If I leave now, I'll spend every day worrying if this is going to happen again. So I'm taking you home." Hesitantly, he lightly touched Toby's cheek again. He didn't want to hurt him, but he couldn't help touching him. "And glasses. We'll get you new glasses."
It didn't matter who tried to stop him. Parents, teachers, other students. Abel was going to pack Toby's bags hold his hand, and walk him right out that front door. None of these damn people deserved him. Letting go of Toby for what he was determined to make the last time, he moved around the room, looking for his belongings. "Where's your bag?"

With his hand pressed against the door, Tobias felt like he could feel Abelâs hand on the other side. There was only the wood separating them now and himself. He rested his forehead against the door, taking a deep, steady breath. There felt like so much distance between them and it was all because of him. Except he couldnât bring himself to open the door. Abel shouldnât have to see him like this, he was a mess and he couldnât see a thing.Â
"LikeâŚ" He trailed off, unable to speak the words he needed to. The broke off at the sound of Abelâs voice. He could feel the door opening and he held strong, still not ready to let Abel in. But when he spoke up again, Toby knew his brother was right. "Okay, just wait a second."Â
Taking a few steps back, he moved away from the door and adjusted his shirt, smoothing it down before folding his hands in front of him. He couldnât see himself but he hoped he looked respectable enough. âYou can come in.âÂ
The fact that Toby couldn't explain only seemed to make it worse. He wanted nothing more than to wrap his arms around hi and hold him tight. He still hated their parents for sending Tobias away and now he could only feel angrier at the situation they had been put into. The door met resistance and he stopped pushing it open, his grip on the handle going slack.
The words surprised him, he had been sure that Toby would hold his ground but it seemed his words got through to him. Abel was very determined not to leave without seeing his brother and soothing his worries before they could grow into something worse. He waited patiently until Toby spoke once more, slowly opening the door. He didn't know what to expect on the other side but what he did see broke his heart. His voice broke, only creating a small whisper as he tried to speak, but nothing came out. It caught in his throat and he had to stop possible tears from forming.
"Oh Toby," he finally whispered, closing the remaining space between them and gently wrapping his arms around him. He couldn't stand seeing his brother like his, bruised and cut and, worst of all, he looked like he'd lost that spark in his soul that made him him. Being extra gentle, he leaned back, his hands going to cup Toby's cheeks as gently and carefully as possible. "Toby, my beautiful, wonderful brother..." He didn't know what to say, it was hard to form words when your chest aches so much. Suddenly, he felt extra horrible for being the reason he had been sent away and being unable to protect him from bullies. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you."
