Why did it take so long for you and Lavina to have your first child?

Gabriel Utterson was, more often than not, a relatively stoic man. Even in the face of some of the most despicable cases he had worked with, he would manage to remain unfazed by the gruesome details. But this question was by no means one he anticipated, nor was it a question he was prepared to answer. For a moment he simply gaped, looking disconcerted and troubled, only to quickly attempt to shirk it off. In its stead, a frown curled at his lips, his gaze now looking down into the empty palms of his hands.“There were many reasons why,” he began, his voice losing its usual resolute and assured tone. “but to put it simply, human and vampire couples can have severe complications or even the possibility of infertility. We attempted many times, trying to work around these seemingly impossible odds...” The lawyer’s words began to falter even more now, his hands balling up into fists. “but each time, we were met with failure. We couldn’t work around these difficulties without some aid, which we eventually received.” A long pause followed those words, followed by an audible, deep sigh. The grip he once had now began to weaken, one hand sliding into his now unruly curls.“Thankfully, Robert and Henry were able to create a supplement for Lavina, which would increase her chances of fertility and decrease the odds of her body rejecting a human child. Since then, we’ve had no further problems. Still, I’ve always wondered what those children before MacKenzie would have been like if they had been born.”

Hello, Mr. Utterson! My question for you is this; what do you feel when you're with your wife? How did you know you were in love with her?

“I feel a lot of things when I’m with her, more than I ever thought I could.” The lawyer coughed briefly, clearing his throat as a feint, red tint spread across his cheeks. “Elation, excitement, an immense amount of warmth in my heart...the list could go on for centuries, truthfully. But to keep it simple, I feel happiness; so much happiness that I can’t possibly measure it.”Gabriel stopped only for a moment, pondering the question following the last before a gentle smile began to tug at the corners of his lips.“I first realized when I found myself enjoying her ever-so-persistent company. When she followed me to London, she was constantly following me, even in moments where I thought I was alone.” Remembering that made a rich, low chuckle rattle through his chest, ending this break in his speech with a whistle-like sigh. “I’m not used to having constant attention or company, I’m usually so busy that I rarely have much time for leisure. It was...a lonely life to lead, but she started to change that. By distracting me from what I usually did, I started to appreciate the diversions from my previously monotonous life. Every minute I spent with her, even if there was bickering, was stubbornly maintained, as if she wanted to be around me no matter what. When I realized that she had no intentions of leaving me be, not allowing me to hole myself away, and that she actually did enjoy my company, that’s when I started to fall for her.”The lawyer paused once more, looking down at the wedding ring on his left ring finger, brushing the icy, metallic surface of it with his right hand’s fingertips. “I fell because no one before had ever shown that much interest in me after first meeting me, and no one had ever broken down the boundaries I had put up for years just to understand me better.”

BACKSTORY

Describe their childhood (newborn - age 10): Born into the weathly Utterson family where John Utterson had high expectations from the beginning. He was raised under a strict code and taught to obey rules. His life relaxed and became a bit more fun when he turned 8 and his little sister, Mackenzie, was born.

Describe their  teenage years (11 - 19): Was sent off to a boarding school for his early schooling years, but often stayed in touch with his little sister via letters. He was accepted into Oxford University's law school at 17-years-old and rekindled relationships with his childhood friends Robert and Henry.

Describe their  adult years (20+): Graduated University at age 21 and began an apprenticeship with a variety of different lawyers. At 23, he and his sister took a trip to the Netherlands, enjoying the time away from his family, however, one night on their trip, Mackenzie Utterson is murdered by an unknown suspect who drained his sister dry of blood. Upon seeing this, Gabriel's heart shattered and for the next 5 years, disappeared to train as a vampire hunter under the Van Helsing family. When he returns to London at 28, he opens his own law firm and during the night, he hunts for vampires. One year later, on another trip to Amsterdam, Holland, he meets a vampire woman named Lavina Dalca, who initially attacks and changes Robert Lanyon. When she follows him to London, he is apprehensive at first, but soon welcomes her company and falls in love. Seven years later, his first daughter, Mackenzie, is born. However, the happiness only last two years, as Lavina returns home to Romania and soon vanishes. During her absence, all he has is Mackenzie, but thankfully Henry has developed a small serum taken with the smallest ounce of vampirism, that slows the aging process immensely. Sadly, his family separates even more after Henry's daughter, Emma, is born and sent to the Americas to hide from the wars raging in Europe, Gabriel sends Mackenzie away. For the next 94 years, Gabriel is alone until his "niece" Charlotte, returns to London with Emma and Mackenzie and a month later, Lavina returns as well. Finally marrying, Samuel Utterson is born shortly after, and years later, his twins, Anastasia and Douglas.
