Last semester, I made the transition from listening to lyrical music when I study to listening to background noise. I found that I became much more productive and engaged in my work when I wasn’t distracted by what I was listening to.

Paradise Kiss
Tumblr media
Title: Paradise Kiss (jap. パラダイス・キス paradaisu kisu)
Author: Ai Yazawa
Release: 1999
Genre(s): Comedy, Drama, Josei, Mature, Romance, Tragedy.
Synopsis
Tumblr media
Yukari depicts the typical Japanese high school student in her final year. While striving hard at school to meet her parent’s expectations, she appeals to a group of Fashion design students on the road because of her model-like silhouette. Which leads her way to entering the Fashion world, even though she seemed unsure and lacked self confidence at the beginning. Needless to mention that the enchanting George does play a big part into captivating her by the frivolousness and fantasy-like stagewalks and his own designs that he sells under the brand name “Paradise Kiss”. Hence, she finds herself walking the stages and working as a model for Paradise Kiss as she slowly sinks deeper and deeper into the world of fashion and forms a close bond with their members.

My Summary
Being a big fan of Ai Yazawa’s art-style and overall the genres her manga usually depict, I instabtly fell in love with this short manga of hers. I feel like we clearly get to see that the artist herself has a deep understanding of the fashion work (since she herself has been to one) and that makes the story so much more realistic and even aesthetically pleasing. Although there seem to be some parallels to her famous Manga “NANA”, the story caries it’s own climax and is more entertaining through its more joyous plot. I find the characters each have a solid character development and get an equal share of appearance throughout the story. The fact that we dwell into the story of a high school girl at the verge of becoming an adult, makes the story even more meaningful for young adults who might relate to it a lot. Yukari is truly an example of what each teenager might go through at some point or another and her encounter with George does awaken an earthquake of emotions and desires within her. So we somehow follow the personal development of Yukari as well as her hardships and successful moments. I enjoyed the retro vibe and the flow of the whole story, also without wanting to spoil, I kinda like it’s unusual ending.
Tumblr media
Also having read the manga, seen the anime and even the live adaptation, I can only recommend watching them all ;3. Maybe start with the manga or anime, since they (for once) follow the same plot without too much of distortion...(truthfully I didn’t notice any). For those unsatisfied by its ending, I strongly recommend watching the live adaptation then :P.

Romance is a bonus book
Yes... I guess I’ve fallen for K Drama at last! >^< Going from the person who would usually find the guys too flashy and fake somehow because that’s the impression I had seeing most of the actors with hair dyed in the most unnatural colours or wearing contact lenses and the girls having undergone countless plastic surgeries... I usually get very picky about films and series in general, if it doesn’t appeal to me from the plot, which might be too shallow or the story too protagonist-cantered, a failure at creating a climax, shallow characters i.e. no proper character development etc...
But for the first time I have to admit that I really, really fell in love with this series. I stumbled across it on Netflix and truth be said I didn’t like the synopsis and the trailer, but I still decided to give it a go and got absorbed into it sooooo quickly *^* I have a deep appreciation and understanding for the plot and I really value the real life situations they tried to include, the hardships of life from an adult’s point of view and not a teenager. The social implications and pressure, the work life in general... it’s a very entertaining show and yet an emotional one, well to me at least. I did end up pouring out tears T.T
But yes, I thought of maybe sharing it here. I would love to have some other people enjoy this show as much as I did. Plus if you are a sucker for romantic comedies this is just perfect >w< <3

“I don’t know when I started to like you. From spring to summer. From summer to fall. And from fall to winter. Do you know when the season changes? Do you know exactly when winter ends and spring begins? I don’t know when exactly my feelings for you started to grow.” - Cha Eun-ho, Romance is a Bonus Book (ep 10)
