The Adventure Zone Season 1 is ending, so I finally had to do that fan art of the multiverse' sexiest elf.

I have solar keratitis! Don't worry, it's not that bad - it's a very fun summer sunburn, on your cornea! All your friends will dig this new summer look. I should be all better soon, but in the mean time, it's going to mean a bit of a change in how I do things. I'm going to be working in my body's schedule, which means comics will go up when I can, not when I would like. I'll be shifting more toward sketches, and away from completed illustrations. Summer Break!

After some thinking, I’ve come to the decision that, considering the amount of work I would have to balance with my output here over the next couple of weeks in order to stay in the black rent-wise, a little summer break is in order. There’s going to be a short 2 week hiatus on the comics for me to get in some much-needed sunbathing, surf-rock dance parties and semi-nude volleyball. See you all back here on July 21!

"Idealization" (pbb-bbth!) is a very common term in the illustration industry; the essential idea being that good life drawing requires the artist to tweak the figure according to their internalized aesthetic preferences. You'll find this idea in Loomis, Bridgeman, and the vast majority of the golden age canon. Earlier this evening, I found myself very unsatisfied with the image on the left, and decided to give the sketch a second shake, this time while deliberately designing the image to emphasize the unique aesthetics of the actual woman in front of me, rather than the twee, faux-Roman "idealized" facial anatomy I had been taught. Lo and behold, while it may be a bit on the sloppy side, the second sketch is much more interesting than the first. The moral of this story: a well DESIGNED figure is NOT an IDEALIZED figure. The more you inflicted normative standards on your models or your images, the more beautiful anatomy you'll miss!
