-Count Orlok-
This piece is deeply inspired by Robert Eggers' highly anticipated reimagining of Nosferatu. As one of my favorite directors, Eggers has an unmatched ability to craft haunting atmospheres and rich, unsettling visuals, and I wanted to channel that same energy into this artwork. Count Orlok here stands as a shadow of dread, his silhouette etched against a crimson sky—a timeless figure of fear and fascination.
I aimed to capture the eerie stillness and grotesque elegance that make Orlok such an iconic presence, while also paying homage to the legacy of the original 1922 silent film. The crimson light symbolizes an ever-looming sense of doom, while the sharp angles and menacing posture highlight his predatory nature.
I’m eagerly waiting to see the release of Eggers' Nosferatu—are any of you just as excited? Have you seen it already? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A classic Spanish horror film. La Noche de Walpurgis. Also known as The Werewolf vs Vampire Woman. Or Shadow of the werewolf. 1971. Perhaps one of the first movies showing a enmity between a werewolf and a vampire, after Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein (1948).
Paul Naschy as Waldemar Daninsky/The Werewolf.
Patty Shepard as Countess Wandesa Darvula de Nadasdy.

The Birth of a Monster: Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
In the golden age of Hollywood horror, one monster swam into the spotlight and left a permanent mark on cinema. Creature from the Black Lagoon, released by Universal Pictures in 1954, introduced audiences to the Gill-man—a prehistoric, amphibious humanoid lurking deep in the Amazon. Directed by Jack Arnold, the film blended science fiction, primal fear, and Cold War anxieties into a haunting underwater ballet that captivated viewers then and continues to influence horror creators today.
Iconography in Scales: The Gill-man's Design
The Gill-man remains one of the most iconic monster designs in film history. Crafted by Milicent Patrick (though initially credited to Bud Westmore), the creature's look merged man and fish in a way that felt both alien and tragically familiar. Its bulbous eyes, glistening scales, and webbed claws were revolutionary for the era—and set a new bar for practical effects and costuming. Unlike earlier monsters like Dracula or Frankenstein’s creature, the Gill-man was not human-born or cursed—it was nature itself turned hostile.
Science Meets Terror: A Genre Evolution
Creature from the Black Lagoon emerged during a time when science fiction and horror began to merge. Instead of relying solely on gothic horror tropes, the film tapped into post-war fascination with evolution, radiation, and the unknown. The Gill-man, presented as a missing link, was a scientific anomaly—one that brought horror out of the castle and into the jungle. This shift influenced future films like Alien, The Thing, and The Shape of Water, where biology, not just mythology, births terror.
A Monster for the Atomic Age
Beneath the thrills and screams, Creature from the Black Lagoon reflected 1950s anxieties. The deep, unexplored waters of the Amazon symbolized the fear of the unknown during the Cold War era. The Gill-man, a being untouched by modern civilization, became a metaphor for the consequences of disrupting nature and the hubris of scientific exploration. In this sense, the film wasn't just a monster flick—it was a cautionary tale with gills.
Legacy in the Murky Depths
Universal’s classic monster lineup already featured heavyweights like Dracula, the Mummy, and the Wolfman—but the Gill-man was different. It was the last great Universal Monster of the era and arguably the first true creature-feature icon of modern horror. It inspired countless homages and reinterpretations—from the underwater terror of Jaws to Guillermo del Toro’s romantic reimagining in The Shape of Water (2017), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Conclusion: Still Swimming Strong
Seventy years later, Creature from the Black Lagoon continues to ripple through pop culture. Its daring visuals, ecological themes, and tragic anti-hero have made it a touchstone in horror film history. Whether seen as a love story, a monster movie, or a science-fiction parable, the Gill-man remains a haunting reminder that sometimes the real terror is not what we find in the darkness—but what we disturb in it.

The very air in Snowdin was tense today. It hadn’t started out that way. It was just seemed to… happen. Everyone was set on edge and no one knew why. A rumor was starting to go around, saying there was a human lurking in the town.
Sans quickly figures out that this is not the case.
Don't mind me, I'm bad at summaries. This is just smut.

Horror wants to keep a Sans and Nightmare offers them both a deal.
"Him being cute isn't the only reason why you want him." Nightmare stated while pointing at the tied up Sans on the ground, "Does he know that?"
"Yeah...sort of, he knows he'll go through training and it'll be brutal." Horror said as he picked up the Sans and untied him. He couldn't leave the castle even if he tried so him escaping wasn't a worry.
Nightmare rubbed at his temples, leaning back in his office chair. Like always he was dressed comfortably even if there was company. After a few seconds he relented, Horror's puppy eyes were getting to him.
"Fine, then you can keep him but I will have to talk to him about my original plan. I'm still going to follow through on it despite this new found relationship." Nightmare motioned for Sans to step forward, "Luckily for you, Horror may have just saved your life given your view on my ideas."
Sans walked forward nervously, he hadn't been expecting to met a God. When he had first met Horror he thought he would ended up slaughtered. Not that it would have been a bad thing to go out that way but he didn't plan to get this far.
Nightmare stood and leaned over his desk as he stared into the smaller form of a skeleton, "Me and Dream will be using your AU for a new playground of sorts." He said matter-of-factly.
"Err....okay? So what's my role in that?" Sans asked while tilting his head as he stared up at Nightmare, the imposing force shaking his will "Would it even matter if I protested?"
"No it wouldn't have mattered, I don't want you to interfere and I would have just...." Nightmare stopped himself from finishing his sentence and chuckled like he was waisting words, "Nevermind that, so now I offer you this because it will be the only control you will have over your situation."
"Anything is better than nothing?" Sans shrugged as he listened, hopeful that it wasn't something too absurd.
"You will become Horror's pet and train under him. In turn your loved ones will be protected from the meddlings of me and my brother." Nightmare offered, placing a claw on Sans' forehead after noticing his discomfort. It would be easier for him to make a choice if his mind wasn't so riddled with 'worries'.
"What exactly do you mean by 'meddlings'?" He asked as he felt the prick of the claw, he did not draw blood. His form still mostly magic as he had not spent a lot of time on his surface. This did not go unnoticed by Horror, he made a note in a small book.
"We're just going to drive them mad and have a fun little religious war about it." Nightmare chuckled, drawing emotions from Sans as he was given time to think about it. While he could have just forced the monster to say yes there was no fun in that.
Sans thought about it, not noticing that he wasn't overthinking it as he usually did. It was the only way he could protect everyone he cared about in the underground. Sure the number was few but just giving himself up wouldn't be so bad... It's not like whatever Horror is going to put him through is going to change him much.
"That's funny..." Horror murmured to what seemed like no one. Muffled laughter came from nowhere but it may have been imagined.
Sans thought about it for a moment longer. Give his life up to a total goth hottie and save his love ones in the process? That was the best thing he would get out of this. He did come to a realization, "Am I going to be protected from the madness?"
Nightmare was surprised by the question and bursted into laughter. He was so tickled by a foolish question, he thought it was clear what was going to happen. When he stopped laughing he found a face of shock staring at him.
"I don't know if you noticed but just because your loved ones will be protected doesn't mean you will." He cleared his throat and pulled his claw away from the Sans' forehead, "After all most of your time here and that wouldn't leave anyone sane."
"It'll be okay though, I promise that it won't be as bad as it could be." Horror placed a hand on Sans' shoulder and gave him a soft smile, "Plus once you get used to it all it becomes normal."
Sans stared into Horror's eyes, his empty and bright socket. This situation wasn't a total loss and was better than him being twisted outright by the God before him. If anything this was a blessing that he should take but some unknown part of him worried. He barely could keep himself together most days, how was Horror supposed to do that and make sure he doesn't completely lose his mind to magic?
His hesitation was obvious to Horror, it was familiar. He had felt the same way when he starts working for Nightmare. However everything had turned out better than when he first started, it would be the same for Sans. Horror gave Sans a reassuring hug, patting him on the skull.
"It'll be okay, just take the deal and everything will be handled." Horror's words were soft and sweet as he felt Sans' return the hug.
"...I guess I don't have anything to really lose..." Sans accepted, pulling away from the hug before facing Nightmare. He held out his hand with a wavering smile, "I'll take you up on that deal."
As Nightmare's hand clasped his he could feel liquid ice shoot through his bones. He would have screamed if it weren't for the fact that he was frozen in place by fear. His body shuttered- the breath leaving him being visible in the air. It wasn't possible that he hadn't noticed this chill before.
He felt himself be pushed into Horror's arms. His body feeling heavy and frosted over by magic. To stunned to move he watched as Nightmare and Horror had a short conversation. Horror listened and nodded along to Nightmare's words as he was receiving orders.
Sans' eyes started to close a sudden wave of tiredness hitting him. He didn't fight to stay awake and let the darkness take him for the first time in weeks. Welcoming rest and leaving everything up to Horror to deal with.
