Boss Baby (2017) - Review 00

A comedic and fantastical story of 7-year-old Tim Templeton and his newborn baby brother who wears a suit. Tim Templeton is the only child within the perfect Templeton family of three, and before his baby brother’s arrival, we learn Tim has a hyperactive imagination and he spends all his best time with his parents - when they teach him how to ride a bike, singing songs and reading bedtime stories for him e.t.c. Life for Tim Templeton is a blissful rollercoaster without an end, he can’t ask for anything more; not even a baby brother. 

Life suddenly changes for Tim one morning, when a new born baby is delivered at their door by a taxi cab. Tim quickly slides down the stairs from his room to find, his parents with a strange, smug looking, fat baby in a suit. Confusion grows on his face when his father introduces to him, his new baby brother. With some SFX; Mr. Templeton’s voice transitions from cheerful to a sinister murmur when he introduces the new baby on his hand; it immediately spells nothing but turmoil for Tim. Before they can even be introduced properly, the baby starts bossing everyone around, like the Boss Baby he is - making demands and throwing unnecessary fits and tantrums. The baby’s arrival not only causes havoc in the house but it also affects Tim’s imaginative space and explorations as well; suddenly he couldn’t concentrate on his role play because there’s baby merchandise everywhere. VFX illustrates graphically the unexpected clutter that pops up around the house, lounge, and kitchen; getting in the way of Tim’s imaginative adventures. Tim’s life gets completely cluttered and ambushed by the Boss Baby. 

One evening during their family dinner, Tim get’s fed up with Boss Baby’s irrational behavior and of the fact that his parents are oblivious to the fact that the baby is odd and is wearing a suit. Tim’s exclusion on the other side of the dinner table portrays much about his frustration, the over-hanging, minimal,  shadowed lighting illustrates his frustration and feeling of rejection from his parents now that the new baby has made his way into the Templeton family -  no one pays attention to Tim now. Tim finally breaks his concern about his odd new baby brother, but unfortunately, his parents brush him off by telling him to give the baby a chance, he’ll eventually learn to love him. 

Tim discovers Boss Baby talks! Strangely, he hears whispers and muffled talk from the baby’s room; his imagination runs wild with fear, making him feel as though he’s in a horror sequence. Tim takes slow steps towards the room. To his surprise he finds, baby talking about his secret mission on the phone. When Boss Baby realizes he’s been caught out, his attitude shoots straight to cocky. Boss Baby turns out to be a love hogging and stingy; know-it-all. Here is where I have to give applause to Tom McGrath, the director for nailing Boss Baby’s character, with each and every move he makes across the floor, he walks proudly while throwing in a few flamboyant/flaunting gestures. Clearly, he’s a baby that knows and is proud of himself. On the screenshot above; Boss Baby steps up his feeding chair to dominate Tim, letting him know that their parents can only love one of them at a time, and he’s here for all the love. He tells Tim to his face that he’ll make his life miserable by demanding all the love since he’s young and so he deserves all the glory in the family. He’s an amazing character to watch, very funny and confident little guy.

So Tim makes it his mission to get proof against Boss Baby so he’ll get chased away. He invades Boss Baby’s meeting, as he’s briefing his team of special infant followers, they discuss their next moves for the secret mission. Tim eavesdrops on them. It turns out Boss Bay is after former Big Boss Baby Francis E. Francis, who is on his own mission to turn parents against their children with puppies; by the end of his new product launch, ‘The Forever Puppies’ that stay the same age forever, so parents won’t pay attention to their children anymore. If Boss Baby nails this mission, it would mean him getting promoted to the next big Boss Baby back in Heaven Ville. 

And so Tim decided to help Boss Baby capture his nemesis so he can quickly return to his job in Heaven and Tim can stay with his parents just like the good old times. Boss Baby even agrees to take Tim on a  mental tour into Heaven Ville, by sucking on magical baby pacifiers. The process of working together for once leads them to bond low-key; which leads to their parents will believing they finally love each other. Together back, in reality, they proceed to go on a journey with their parents, on ‘take your kids to work day’ at Puppy Co. On a journey, they both embark on solely to stop Francis Francis before his ‘Forever Puppies’ launch. And save the world.

When they arrive at Puppy Co. they manage to get themselves bobbie trapped while following a lead. The trap leads them to Super Colossal Boss Baby’s headquarters. Who ends up telling them a touching and detailed story on why he decided to launch his new and destructible product. And so Boss Baby and Tim won’t stop him in his plan, he kidnaps their oblivious parents and hires them to help launch his ‘Forever Puppies’ product; while Tim and Boss Baby are held back at home by Francis’ minion. However, with the help of their special team of infants, they manage to escape and head straight to the launch. They arrive just in time to stop Francis before the big launch (an actual spaceship launch filled with millions of Forever Puppies). They manage to catch Francis before he could escape and they get into a physical brawl that leaves them hanging off a ledge, close to their defeat.

Just when it appears as if Tim and Boss Baby are losing, they decide to use their best tool possible - imagination. They pretend to be pirates and manage to jump up the ledge to attack Francis, he slips and ends up falling down into the gigantic pool of magical baby serum. Francis loses, falls into the giant pool of baby serum and gets transformed back into a super fat baby. Tim and Boss Baby release their parents and head back home, for Boss Baby’s departure. 

They say their final goodbyes after having accomplished their combined and personal missions, with everything settled it now becomes hard for them to say goodbye to each other. However, they humbly congratulate one another on their journey’s ahead. A special unit is sent from Heaven Ville to come and erase everyone’s memory of Boss Baby, except for Tim who asks to keep all his precious memories of him and Boss Baby. Seeing that he is feeling lonely.

Back in Heaven Ville, Boss Baby gets promoted to the Big Boss Baby and is granted his promotion to the fancy corner office, but it turns out to be too much of a big space just by himself. He spends his time alone now, without anyone to assist him to get a few simple tasks done, like picking up his pen from his tall throne, grabbing toilet paper next to his toilet seat. He misses Tim, badly. And so does Tim back on Earth. Tim decides to be the bigger man and writes a letter to Boss Baby in Heaven, letting him know that he’s willing to share all the love their parents have to give; as long as they can be together. The news thrill Boss Baby so much that he decides to quit his greatest position and responsibilities to go and be with Tim again. Boss Baby get’s born again; this time with the right intentions of being a baby brother to Tim and not a leader. 

Baby Theodore Lindsay Templeton get’s delivered by a cab at the Templeton door, and it Tim rushes down the stairs in excitement to be introduced to his baby brother. Now with mutual feelings, all four of them prove to be the perfect Templeton family.

It's a beautiful story about sibling rivalry and acceptance. Which taught me a lot about sibling bonds: it doesn't matter who our parents favor most, it's about the magic that we share together as siblings and best friends. It also goes to show how everything in life is a never-ending cycle and love is the only element that binds the different spheres of life together. 

Very funny though how I expected towards to end, to learn that Tim was tripping the entire film. His imagination is so great, he becomes oblivious to the reality that surrounds him (like the fact that babies don’t get delivered by taxis). It’s also amazing and inspiring how his imagination ended up being the only one thing that saved his relationship with his brother and how it saved the day or should I say the world.

_Treet them Well_ Trees are more prone to suffer from diseases and attacks from pesticides if they already under a lot of stress; especially infant trees and sprouts. Help reduce the stress with these few tips to growing a healthy and fresh looking garden: 1. Support the tree’s trunk/stem by tying a stick to it, to ensure that it grows straight upwards. 2. Water it daily or every other day. 3. Make sure it is exposed to enough sunlight and is not under the shade. 4. ‘Growth isn’t easy.

Every creature on Earth human, animal, or plant; we all carry the scars to our beautiful.

A tree acquires scars from bad weather, it triumphs over and out-grows everything. It still stands tall and uplifted, to face more icey cold and blazing hot days; so much that its shell learns to habituat to its environment.

All in the name of survival and of serving an admired purpose. Trees generate oxygen so you can breathe. Up high, daily it bears it’s heavy branches and leaves so you can live’.

On Sunday (09 Oct), I’ll post an animation video about tree awareness; illustrated by myself. It speaks of not only just a tree but a dynamic energy placed within its trunk, which can be likened to any other of a sentient organism that survives.
