MELBOURNE X PARIS TRANSPORT MAP (aka Melbourne Metropolitain): This one has been a very long term map that has been brewing away in the background. It combines the elements of a Parisian transport network and some of the cartographic elements and plonks it into the middle of Melbourne. Let me know how you think a system like this would work in Melbourne.

ROUTE 1: On the surface Melbourne’s Tram Route 1 seems to merely take the population to East Coburg to the beautiful beaches of South Melbourne. But it’s so much more - it also provides access to some of the city’s best hidden bars and gelato on Lygon Street, it delivers young professionals with their tiny apartments in Brunswick, and students to not one, but two major universities! How many tram routes can boast that claim? At least 8! As it heads down Swanston Street, the busiest tram corridor in the world. More valuably it serves as a magnet for the art loving crowd of the inner north and the leafy inner south with the Arts Precinct, including the Malthouse Theatre and the Recital Centre. Where would we be without the Route 1? (picture taken at Lygon/Elgin tram stop, the point where tourists realise they need to turn back around to get to the good pasta) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByufHdWH78W/?igshid=buzbx5zsycrk

A bit of a rainy day activity - I thought it would be fun to make a transit map based on the pubs and bars of Melbourne, more specifically the top 50 pubs and bars according to TimeOut Melbourne.  For this example the trains represent the pubs and the bars represent a tram network.  Not surprisingly, the geographic centre is around the CBD to Fitzroy area, with some clusters around South Melbourne, Footscray, Richmond and Brunswick.  How many of these have you been to?

I’ve super busy on the tablet lately.  The first of the 11 local Shire maps is up in the shop (yay!)  A big thanks to Liz Pearson for the dragon art for “Puffing Billy”.  I’ll be posting updates over easter for the next one, hopefully releasing in May.

A few bits and bobs from a live-action weekend.  Including some new symbols for strawberries, cherries, schools, stores, and market squares.  ALSO, a time matrix with walking distances between towns, so you can plan your adventure accordingly, and in accordance with the cartographic principle of BOLTSS, a map title!

Some more update pics:  Yarra Forest is filled out, and a bit of more detail around the Yarra Junction-Gladysdale-Warburton area, so now with more pubs, homes, halls, roads, creeks, forest, strawberries, a weir, a cave and mountains!!

An updated version of one of my favourite maps. The First Friday Bikes and Beers Club (responsibly) visits pubs along bike friendly routes around Melbourne. These are the routes so far.  (note: some of these pubs have shut down since the time of visit)

BIG UPDATE: The Shire map is now at it's full extent taking in all of the Yarra Ranges. Just need to fill it in with all the things!!!! (which will probably take a few months) Right now, at it's full size it's 1.5m tall and 2.4m long, but can be shrunk down. Some of these images sow the recent stuff I've been adding, overall about 67% done. Enjoy!

This is what the the second and third sections of the map look “stitched” together.  For those unfamiliar with the area east of Warburton, it’s a lot of creeks, mountains, and forests, not many towns.  There are a scattering of old pubs that served as stops on the way to the goldfields in Woods Point.  Lots of history in them hills, can’t wait to fill it all out.

Because in real life this map will be about 3m x2m, I have to split it into four parts.  Here be the beginnings of PART THREE.  If you wanted to see mountains again, you gonna get flippin’ mountains!

I made a more circular version of the proposed 'Suburban Rail Loop'.  Some of the other maps have the loop going around the current network, this one reverses that.  I'll be making a couple of other versions with some of additional historic proposals, this is the first one.
