and i mourn every other day when i remember that there arent more episodes that feature shirley and jeff being made of the same cloth. because those two would be the main ones that create offshoot group chats without one specific member—pierce, for instance. but no one's spared. it's only used briefly, as a way to do an aside, then left forgotten or deleted or recycled for something else later.
they're doing interventions. it's like a toxic family discord server that creates channels some members are blocked from.
jeff would do it shamelessly to talk about the people removed, bc for the most part he doesnt think excluding people is a big deal. shirley would do it too but she's contrite and furtive about it.
abed doesnt fully get that the extra chats without some people are supposed to be behind their back, so he'll announce on the main group chat when someone's sent a text on another chat and he's gonna go check it. jeff HATES it when he does this because it's usually jeff starting shit in another chat.
annie would dislike making group chats to talk behind people's backs (unless she thinks it's necessary, but she's guilty about it), or simply to exclude them from a particular conversation. she instead privately messages people. Annie very rarely uses the group chats, and it’s kind of annoying when she could literally just make a group chat, but no, she likes individually addressing people. maybe im extrapolating too much from the Basic Crisis Room Decorum cold open where instead of texting a group chat she individually texts frankie and the dean, but i think it's funnier that way.

Why make a group chat specifically for study meetups when you aren't going to use it for that.
shirley would also make a girls chat with britta and annie. and jeff, more in retaliation than anything, would make a guys chat with troy and abed. (he forgot pierce on purpose.) Neither are used much.
there would also be a roommates group chat for annie, troy, and abed, created by annie, that incidentally is also a younger generation group chat. Remember those study break mini episodes? Yeah.

actually kind of fascinating that pierce's primary role in the show is to serve as this constant ghost of christmas future for jeff, and symbolize the person that he will become if he doesn't become a better person. nearly every plotline that's about the two of them goes back to this, but especially in biology 101 where pierce and jeff are treated as almost interchangeable within the group, down to the 2001 homage and pierce getting the empty spot in biology that jeff left behind. any time the show has a plotline that focuses on pierce, like advanced gay or the first documentary episode, it ends up circling back around and being about jeff.
