Boulder. Bricks. Beets. Bears. Okay no beets or bears. I just think it is bizarre that this boulder was built around with bricks. Maybe it was a cost saving measure? What if this boulder is sacred and people lived and died based upon what the beguiling beholder of the boulder bespoke to his brethren? Basically. Pretty sure I did not use some of those words right. There is no water flowing in this picture. We arrived at exactly the right time to see this stream drying out, preserving incredible ripple marks in the riverbed. The sediment is thick with clays and smooth as butter (and slick too, we found out unintentionally). Ocotillo Wells has many neat secrets, the first of which are these canals. This was something I did awhile ago, and I realized I never posted about it. Last semester (so January to June) I undertook a fun personal project involving growing Alum Crystals as a part of Geochemistry. I decided to go the extra mile and try 2 things: 1. Can I add color to the Alum Crystals (yes) 2. Can you grow Alum Crystals on something cool? (A pewter Wizard for a random example)(yes) So this is, more or less, the project in entirety. Yes, I am a HUGE nerd (maybe Geek? What's the difference?). Proud of it! In case you were wondering: I found that Pewter Wizard figurine at a garage sale like 10 years ago. Engraved signature on it, Ray something? Can't see it now... because crystals... I think my favorite academic moment from this semester was working to prove the existence of a normal fault during one of our trips. It was very gratifying to combine teamwork (@indigo_ronnie), several measurements (strike and dips, lineations etc) and observations like this one where I wanted to check to make sure this marker bed was the same on both sides of the fault.
