So with the "ginger cats are always tabbies", let's just say there's a ginger cat who's parents do not carry any tabby genetics, what kind of tabby would the cat be?
Hello, Meepit!
Well, after having done further research, hereās what basically happens:
Red is a totally different gene than other things. For a cat to be red, they must have 2 red genes (for XX cats) or 1 red gene (for XY cats).
Now, red also interacts weirdly with tabby genes. So, if a cats parents donāt carry any tabby genes, theyāll both be solid-solid. So any and all kits will be solid-solid. Presuming that at the least one parent is red and one parent is tortie, you can have red kits, XY or XX.
Basically, what happens with red, is it leaves āghost markingsā. These can be found in other cats; Iāve seen a few black cats with them. Itās the impression of tabby markingsā especially likely on the head or tail, even though the cat is genetically solid-solid.
So, in short, many red solids will *appear* tabby, or tabby-ish, because of this. So sometimes it can be tricky to tell if theyāre truly solid or not.
So, you have a red cat with two solid parents, the red cat will also be solid. However, they may well have ātabby markingsā on their heads and tails, and those markings tend to be pretty consistent in type. So, theyāre a solid cat, with a good chance of āghost markingsā.
I hope this answers your question!

Heyo again! This time weāre doing Sandstormās side of the family tree, starting off with Brindlefaceās family. Now itās somewhat important to note that Iāve decided to NOT include Chestnutkit or Cherrypaw in this family tree for one of two reasons. one) they presumably die young and do not have offspring and two) they are really only passively mentioned in Bluestarās Prophecy and they were not named when mentioned. Therefor I consider them to have little significance to our family tree BUT I would absolutely color some designs of them if anyone wants me to. <3
If anyoneās intrested, Chestnutkit could have been a solid black, black tabby, or red tabby while Cherrypaw could have either been a tortoiseshell or a tortoiseshell tabby like her mother.
With that little note aside, there have been some major changes to this bloodline! First up is Robinwing who, in canon, is described as āa brown she-cat with a ginger patch on her chestā . Now I donāt know about how much you know about cat genetics, but that is just tremendously impossible. Iām assuming, due to her ginger patch and the fact that she is brown, that she is a tortoiseshell tabby (or brown patched tabby, whichever name youād prefer) and I can assure you that tortoiseshell tabbies do not express their red exclusively on their chest. So Iāve tossed that whole nonsense out about her character design and made her into a proper tortoiseshell tabby. Robinwing is not described in canon with white markings BUT because three of her offspring are described with white markings (Frostfur, Ravenpaw, Cherrypaw), Iāve decided to include minimal white spotting on her design so her kids can actually express white markings. Iāve also gone ahead and given Robinwing the benefit of the doubt and made her an Aa agouti cat so she can still have all of her solid children.
Fuzzypelt, Ravenpaw, and Dustpelt have not changed genetically and are still solid black and black tabbies, respectively. Iām also going to give Fuzzypelt and Robinwing the MAJOR benefit of the doubt and say their both Dd cats carrying dilute so they can make grey tabby Brindleface. The only major change out of all of those four is Ravenpaw, who has dropped his white tail tip. Itās actually somewhat complicated for a cat to have white on their tails (even 90% white cats have colored tails!) and the only patterns that I know of that produce white tails are tuxedo and magpie, with magpie being a full white tail and tuxedo producing white tail tips. Unfortunately, Ravenpawās parents donāt have enough white on them to produce a tuxedo kitten (and Ravenpaw wasnāt described with much white in canon, either) so no white tail tip for him.
However, Frostfur is... Absolutely and utterly impossible with Fuzzypelt and Robinwing as parents.
There is absolutely no way two cats that are not even described with white markings in canon, mind you, could produce a solid white kitten like Frostfur. And yes, I am aware that there is this neat little gene called ādominant whiteā that can make cats white, but itās called dominant white for a reason; one or both of Frostfurās parents would have to have this gene in order for her to inherit it and as they are not, in fact, white, they very clearly do not have this gene. The only way they could even dream of producing a pure white kitten is that both of them have white spotting (at least one parent with 80%+ white) and, well, they just donāt.
Her parents could produce, with the genes Iāve guessed for them, female kittens that are: solid black, black tabby, grey tabby, tortoiseshell, tortoiseshell tabby, or dilute torties/tort tabbies. The chance of two Dd cats producing a dilute offspring is only about 25% in a litter of four (I think Frostfur was born with Brindleface, Chestnutkit, & Cherrypaw but I could be wrong) and because her littermate Brindleface is dilute, I have my doubts that Frostfur would get lucky enough to hit the ādilute lotteryā as it were. Iāve decided to make her into a tortoiseshell tabby, but genetically, she could plausibly be all the colors listed above. If Frostfur expressed any white at all, itād be very minimal and most likely under 30%.
It is useful to note that I will not be including Robinwingās litter with Patchpelt in this particular tree as Patchpelt has his own hosts of relatives that need to be fixed before I can accurately say what their kittens could look like. Both he and Longtail will appear in a later family tree, however! :)
Whew, sorry for the long rant! I tend to do that when trying to explain whatās going on. Weāre going to be fixing Redtailās side of the family next so we can make ādem FirexSand kittens but forewarning that Iām probably going to split his family up into smaller trees so tumblr doesnāt make it ant-sized. See you again soon!

Did you draw the cat base u use for ur family tree yourself? It's super cute.
Yep, I did! And I color them all by hand too instead of making a tabby template, RIP my hand. x.x
It makes them all unique though, donāt you agree? Nothing could be worse than repeating the same lineart with the exact same tabby design on every character, or at least, I think so.

So... I am a huge genetics nerd, if you didnāt know, and Iāve always found it annoying how Erin Hunter never did the slightest bit of research into cat genetics to see if a certain coloration was even possible. Yes, I know this is a childrens series and children (nor Erin Hunter) remotely care if two black tabbies can produce a red tabby kitten BUT this is just for fun, a fun little way to see what our favorite characters may have looked liked if they followed realistic cat genetics.
Welcome to Project Bloodlines.
First up Iāve decided to do Firestarās family tree! Forgive me for the size, Tumblrās made it puny but you can enlarge it to view itās full glory by clicking it.
Firstly, Iāve changed Nutmeg from a brown tabby to a tortoiseshell tabby. Why, you ask? Simple. As a brown tabby, Nutmeg would be unable to have ginger tom kits and assuming weād like to keep the āfireā part of āfire will save the clanā, Iāve changed her to a tortoiseshell tabby so she is able to produce a ginger Firestar.
Iāve also changed Princess from a brown tabby to a red tabby. Even if I had not changed Nutmeg to a tortoiseshell tabby, Princess still could not be a brown tabby and would have been a tortoiseshell tabby instead. With Nutmegās new coloration, Princess could either be a tortoiseshell tabby or a red tabby but I decided to go for red tabby in this instance. The rest of Firestarās siblings have not changed genetically except for Tommy, who has considerably less white than with what he is described.
If Jake was an AA cat, he and Quince could only produce black tabby toms and tortoiseshell tabby mollies. However, because I do fancy keeping Scourge black, Iāve given Jake the benefit of the doubt and made him an Aa cat, which now means he and Quince can produce black self & black tabby toms and tortoiseshell & tortoiseshell tabby mollies.
I have therefor changed Socks to a black tabby and Ruby to a tortoiseshell while Scourge remains solid black. None of the kittens would have any white on them due to their parents not exhibiting white and therefor most likely being ss cats, so sorry Scourge and Socks, no white paws for you.
This is the first installment of many of our family tree! Please keep in mind that this new format takes me a lot longer to produce due to the fullbody designs instead of just the headshots, but I like it a lot better this way, donāt you? :)
Next weāre going to head over to Sandstorm and fix up her family tree before we move onto the SandxFire kits. Weāre probably going to break her tree up into smaller parts than Firestarās simply because of how many direct relatives she has.

You have no idea how much I hate Spiderleg genetically (thanks R for ruinning every cat ever, lol) but I absolutely love this piece. <33 You have absolutely lovely art and I actually adore this Spiderleg, even if he totally did steal his genetics from dogs apparently, lmao.
