Karl Sharro’s #karlreMarks has a proposition for those who are willing to (re)shape the Middle East from their armchairs. An excellent take on the region’s history and imperial meddling, this map offers the best ways to partition the region. As @aftersaidat5 we endorse the one based on jeans. For hilarious satirical #applause material and more, head to reMarks’ Twitter and Facebook. #aftersaidat5 #applause #karlremarks #karlsharro #middleeast #maps #cartography #satire

“Magnificent Century” reshaped Turkish aesthetics of the early 2010s, and it visualized blatantly wrong, self-aggrandizing history telling in the post-ex-neo Ottoman contexts. However it is still a great cultural product for putting your knowledge of (self)Orientalism in work. Catch it on @netflix #aftersaidat5 #screen #fail #magnificentcentury #suleymanthemagnificent #kanuni #hurrem #hurremsultan #orientalism #selforientalism #muhtesemyuzyil #ottomanhistory #ottomans #ottomanempire

Beth Baron’s book “Egypt as a Woman: Nationalism, Gender, and Politics” is #canon for the students of Modern Egypt. Baron’s book was among the first studies which brought questions of nationalism, memory, and identity into dialogue with gender in Middle Eastern Studies. Baron’s book has led to similar works in other contexts of the region, therefore it is also #canon for students of gender studies in the Middle East. The book was published by @uc_press #aftersaidat5 #canon #egypt #gender #identity #memory #nationalism #history #middleeasternhistory #baron #bethbaron

Our follower Nicholas Glastonbury sent us this post from LogoTV, which warns English-speaking queer people against countries and regions that are not queer friendly or even hostile towards them. Although the article includes heartbreaking examples from the “West,” such as Germany’s Bavarian region and Australia not letting HIV+ people to stay longer than 90 days, the main image for the article is of course chosen from one of those Egyptomania examples of Hollywood. While equating a queer traveller to Indiana Jones who saves “the culture” from the brown enemy is a form of Orientalism, the article’s main argument boils down to pinkwashing the self—that is assuring LogoTV’s mainstream gay audience in the US that they are in the best part of the world while concealing the structural injustices queer people face everyday. We will not provide a link to this #fail but feel free to use this FB ad image we slightly modified for your own joy. #aftersaidat5 #fail #logotv #queerstruggle #lgbtiq #indianajones #egyptomania

In this #online piece on @muftahorg , Shirly Bahar breaks ground and shows how Turkish Arabesk and Mizrahi music in Israel shares a common history and striking parallels in their contexts. This piece is a must-read for popular culture enthusiasts and Turkey and/or Palestine/Israel scholars. Mad Man John Hamm goes to Beirut via Hollywood. Of course as one does, he and his film crew reproduces all the tired stereotypes about the Lebanese capital for this one big, fat #fail Don’t catch “Beirut” anywhere, because you probably already know the story, plot twist, the good and the evil, and the “East” of the film. #aftersaidat5 #fail #beirut #orientalism #johnhamm #hollywood

Remember those good times when public/private has was a challenging paradigm for the Middle East? With this #fail, those days will look like la belle époque. Our reader Nazli Ozkan submitted these luxury market stores, named after Haremlik/Selamlık in Turkish, only with a self-Orientalizing twist via French, and we are oscillating between cringe and laughter while featuring them. #aftersaidat5 #orientalism #haremlique #selamlique #selforientalism

Leslie Peirce of NYU has been one of the trailblazing figures in the Ottoman History. She recently published “The Empress of the East,” which tells the story of a slave girl who rose to the top of the Harem in the Ottoman Empire. Fans of the TV series “Magnificent Century” know her by her Ottoman name, Hurrem. This #fresh book introduces her as Roxelana, and tells her misunderstood life based on solid historical research. #aftersaidat5 #fresh #ottomanempire #hurrem #hurremsultan #magnificientcentury #roxalana #peirce #lesliepeirce #ottomanhistory

David Gramling’s first book “The Invention of Monolingualism” is a sound study of monolingualism and a #fresh book of multiple audiences hailing from scholarly clusters of literature, applied linguistics, cultural studies, and translation studies. Gramling’s analysis touches on literatures of English, German, Turkish, and Spanish languages, but the impact of his work will cross over borders of any kind.

DJ and anthropologist Kornelia Binicewicz’s #online piece on Fairuz and Kamuran Akkor is a promising attempt of connecting the Turkish and Lebanese cultural contexts in the 1970s. The author draws most of her analysis from an interview with Akkor herself, making this piece an important text telling Akkor’s story to the English-speaking audiences. Binicewicz also invents a new moniker for Akkor, by calling her the pearl of Istanbul.
