So wait are livestock guardian dogs to their flocks like… Clark Kent among the residents of Smallville? He’s been here since he was a baby, we all know him, and he’s… generally one-of-us shaped, uh, approximately. And then when something goes wrong he suddenly leaps into action and does some terrifying impossible shit none of us could do. And then comes back home and settles in like nothing happened and he’s one of us again.

When Benito Mussolini took power in Italy in 1922, his support among the Italian people could generally be attributed to two factors. Firstly, the Italian parliament at the time was widely regarded as dysfunctional and incompetent, with multiple prime ministers in a row failing to maintain a governing coalition long enough to accomplish anything; thus making a single-minded dictator seem like a far more appealing prospect. Secondly, Italy had joined World War I on the side of the allies, and despite being part of the winning coalition, many Italian veterans and nationalists felt sleighed by the Treaty of Versailles because Italy was not given control of Rijeka and Dalmatia (the current day coastal areas of Croatia), with this region instead becoming part of the newly formed Yugoslavia. These regions had been part of the Venetian Republic before being claimed by Austria-Hungary, still had cultural and linguistic ties to Italy, and had previously been promised to Italy by the British and French as territory they could claim if the allies won the war. In an era of nationalism where a country's greatness was still popularly measured first and foremost by territorial expansion, this felt like a great insult to many Italians, with some calling it a "vittoria mutilata": a mutilated victory.
This explains the appeal of Mussolini's focus on militarism, machismo, and constant appeals to the legacy of the Roman Empire. Militarism and Empire to appeal to a future where Italy would take back what it was owed and grow even further beyond this, and Machismo to appeal to the Italian veterans. It's important to understand that in this era, war was viewed almost as a masculine right of passage for many Europeans. Fighting in a war and "winning" - with many soldiers coming home with PTSD or physical disabilities - while being denied the spoils of victory, felt not just humiliating, but specifically emasculating.
In modern times, fascism still appeals first and foremost to those who feel emasculated. However, this takes a different shape under a new international order where expansionist empires are largely frowned upon, not glorified. While Donald Trump has tried to revive the appeal of greatness through territorial expansion with his threats to annex Greenland, Canada, and Panama, this was never his primary appeal to the American people. Modern masculinity is concerned less with military conquest and more with the realms of dating, sex, and the family. The revanchist desire to reclaim lost territory is replaced by a desire to reclaim a scorned lover, an estranged family, or a hypothetical wife or family which the emasculated man never had, but feels he was denied by forces outside his control.
In his new song "Heil Hitler", rapper Kanye West says "my bitch keep fucking my friends" and "With all of the money and fame I still can't get my kids back / With all of the money and fame I still don't get to see my children / N****s see my twitter but they don't see how I be feeling / so I became a Nazi yeah bitch I'm the villain / N***a Heil Hitler". In this essay I will

it wild to me that there are people out there who aren't interested in history
like wdym you don't think about the fact that women would tell stories as they made butter in the same way we listen to podcasts today? wdym you don't think about that one Chinese poet who wrote about how much he loved his cats hundreds of years ago? wdym you don't think about the fact that we found a gravesite of a young child surrounded by flowers from THOUSANDS of years ago? wdym you don't think about how people wrote "i was here" into the walls in Pompeii? wdym you don't think about the little egyptian boy who drew little doodles at the top of his school works more then a thousand years ago?
wdym you don't think about the fact that people, no matter the place, time, or social status, are fundamentally no different from you. that they loved the same as you, enjoyed the same things you did, dreamed about a better life the same way you did. that despite how seemingly detached you are from these people, in time, place, and culture, the things you do and what u are is so undeniably human that it transcends time and space

I hate the sound of babies crying, but I can't hate a baby. They've been here for like five minutes and approach this situation with an unhesitant attitude of "my needs are unmet and I am going to make it everybody's problem", and I respect that.

legitimately my first feminist awakening as a ten year old child was realizing that girls were expected to respect “boy stuff” but boys were never expected to respect “girl stuff”

I explained the concept of "blorbo from my shows" to my 71 year old immigrant grandfather because I referenced it in passing and I thought nothing of it, until today when he said "I think I'll watch peaky blinders tonight and see my blorbo from my shows" referring, of course, to Cillian Murphy playing Tommy Shelby

Hello, Tumblr. It's been a minute. I got into 86 and now I'm hooked. Sorry, Bleach. Anyway, here's Lena fussing over Shin because he keeps getting more and more injured the further into the light novel I get. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
