romellura doodle ft my redesign

my romelle redesign!

explanation under cut

-top of the hairstyle was essentially a copy/paste of allura. you could argue it's an altean cultural thing, but romelle was born 10,000 or so years after allura, and we can assume lotor did nothing to keep knowledge of alfor, allura, and his wife around, so if the knowledge of there mere existence even survived, I seriously doubt the knowledge of their hairstyles would. so, I went with sidebangs that behave similarly to how alluras bangs work, because animation style. also, i chose the sidebangs to represent how romelle represents the colony that’s been hidden all this time, because in character design thick bangs going over the eye often have something to do with hiding

- meanwhile the bottom of the hair looks like plaxum's fins. and the color of it is almost the same shade as nyma's skin (fur?) so i looked at her old design, which was just loose hair, and got rid of the pigtails. i changed the light blonde color of her hair to strawberry blonde to tie better into her outfit

- rounded and thickened her eyebrows so they match her face shape better

- the altean colony has ten *thousand* years of evolution on allura and coran. sure, with such an advanced race there really wouldn't be much change, exceeeept for the hundreds of years they were presumably in hiding. thus, their markings would probably more resemble the face markings of other alien races we've seen. so, same general shape of the markings, but bigger and lower

- same vein of thought, alteans have those weird double pupils that we don't see in any other aliens (except krolia and acxa, I think) so, if they were in hiding, having double pupils with a dark enough color that it blends in with the first or even no double pupil at all would be necessary to successfully stay hidden 

- also in the same vein, it would make sense for alteans to not have such colorful eye variations - when they camouflage themselves we can see they can change their skin color, but not their eye color. plus, brown eyes are pretty

- I know they were trying to pay homage to her og design, but they did the same thing with allura's design while also racebending her! and there rlly isn't. a reason for her to be white/have European features. so, to pay homage to her og design while *also* not giving her European features, I gave her Voltron-style Japanese features - since her character's origin is in an anime

- romelle's outfit (and, to be honest, all the other colonist's outfits) are very casual, what we can imagine altean peasants would wear. so wtf was up with her big ol' earrings. those stood out to me and not in a good way, so. Gone
