Did you know 1500kg of plastic enters Australian beaches every single day? One thousand five hundred kilograms! Did you know when volcanoes are erupting in Hawaii the lava is coming into contact with plastic, and it’s forming a new type of rock called plastiglomerate? Did you know that scientist are predicting there will be a layer of sedimentary rock in the future with a layer of plastic embedded inside it? To start a conversation about this we hand collected plastics from the Yarra River (it only took 1 hour to collect 2 large garbage bags full), and displayed it in our deign ‘Anthropogenic Future’ at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2019. Thank you @rmit_la for helping us with this display and to @_bespoke_landscapes_ we couldn’t have done any of this without you guys! @melbflowershow @landscaping_victoria (at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwRlxQjF1GK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=nvmnkmr7yf5c

A beautiful detail shot showing the recycled concrete pavers against the sharp finish of the decking inside our pavilion. Its amazing how beautiful the variation in the recycled concrete is! What a fantastic way to give it a new life instead of sourcing new stone. Garden lights looking amazing by @gardens_at_night and Perspex lazercut wall provided by @rmit_la , this is also a great shot showing the strata line of plastic (hand collected from the Yarra River). 🌿 @_bespoke_landscapes_ @landscaping_victoria @melbflowershow (at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvvPyV8FRuX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1e4ibekbe4rma

This is Grace and Isbella enjoying our garden at #mifgs2019, it’s amazing how captivated so many children were by our display, by the colour / texture of the plants and especially our use of plastic waste in the design! A huge thank you to @stephengryan @specialitytrees and @warnersnurseries for our beautiful plants. And of course to @_bespoke_landscapes_ @melbflowershow @landscaping_victoria 🌿🌿🌿 (at Carlton Gardens) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvq2KV5l8pV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tzthakgmz5yw

Live on ABC News this morning with @abcnews_au & James Hancock @jimkristian88 Thank you to the ABC for featuring our design ‘Anthopogenic Future’ at The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show #mifgs2019 . Talking about sustainability and material re-use, as well as the issue of plastic pollution in our environment. The plastic waste featured in our garden was hand collected from the Yarra River, VIC. @_bespoke_landscapes_ @landscaping_victoria @melbflowershow (at Carlton Gardens) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvkVmJEleRU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4dwzt20fzj9w

This is our design ‘Anthropogenic Future’ for The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show #mifgs2019 @melbflowershow . Thank you @_bespoke_landscapes_ for our project collaboration, and to @landscaping_victoria for having us! Our garden ‘Anthropogenic Future’ repurposes waste and building materials to showcase a new type of garden, beautiful, robust and representative of our future urban landscape. The design references the Anthropocene; the new geological epoch in which humans have become the biggest geological force on the planet. With the increasing demands and pressure on the environment due to rising population and consumption of resources, we believe gardens must be ecologically diverse, drought tolerant and vibrant spaces. The design plays on the idea of the cross section cut, using perspex along the front as a window under the ground. The strata lines are both revealed at the front face of the garden and again at the back of the pavilion. Just as a seam of gold would be exposed in quartz, the design will reveal the everyday plastics showcased as the newly deposited strata. This will make explicit societies current addiction to plastics by creating a confusingly beautiful form with a highly damaging material. This plastic has been sourced from the Yarra River. The planting palette selects species based on future resilience. This design aims to highlight how xeroscape planting can be rich with form, colour, texture and interest. The layout of the design is focused around a central pond, which is built in a naturalistic style but uses recycled concrete rubble instead of rock. Along the ponds edge the concrete doubles as a stepping stone path, leading to the apex of the design; a ‘floating’ metal cube which becomes the main pavilion and destination point. The cube is cantilevered over the water and is made from recycled metal. The garden makes use of topography to embed different deign elements and strategically uses materials and plants to create microclimates. 🌿🌿🌿 (at Carlton Gardens) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvf3JuDFWOn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=793na6babi02

Our client Anne asked for a garden with a sense of wild, a free flowing form which was adaptable, seasonal and able to grow and change. Using redgum sourced from her farm we designed an entertaining area with a jagged edge which blends into the garden. The redgum decking is carefully cut around large volcanic rocks, which were placed to appear as though there were already in the garden. A winding pathway leads you along a journey through the garden, creating large garden beds which give enough space for planting to disguises the carpark at the bottom of the block. One side of the pathway is lined with volcanic rock and the opposite side with a swale, designed to drain water towards the bottom of the garden. The planting is a mixture of edibles and wild flowers, creating a meadow and self seeding garden, with carefully placed fruit trees.
