Introduction

What is Subjection?

Subjection is a work-in-progress novel revolving around the development of four characters’ relationships and beliefs following the murder of someone they knew.

This novel focuses strongly on unconventional relationships, especially queer-platonic and reluctantly intimate ones. There is explicit sexuality throughout the book, however, as well as other mature subjects such as death (with descriptive gore), mental illness, and violence. The story is dark and raw, but warm and sincere, too.

The title, “Subjection”, is meant to reference two things:

1. To be subject to someone. The four main characters are all subject to at least one of the others, whether that be because of infatuation or blackmail. In any case, it’s extreme, it’s vulnerable, and it’s all-consuming. This is what this book is about.

2. Subjectivity vs. objectivity. The characters’ beliefs, actions, motives are all influenced by the context they have revolving the murder hanging over the narrative. That context (or lack of it) creates nearly all primary conflict within the plot.

Lastly, this novel is representation. Characters with physical and mental disabilities have leading roles in this story, as well as all four of the main characters being people of color, including underrepresented ethnicities. Most notably, this book provides positive representation of ASPD (antisocial personality disorder), a disorder that has been villainized and dehumanized by society forever. Not everyone with ASPD is violent, and not everyone with ASPD is evil, and this book depicts it’s antisocial character as a multifaceted and complicated person. As a person.

About the Author

Hi, I’m the author of this novel. :) I’ll be remaining anonymous, at least until the book is published.

I’m 20 years old and in school, but not for writing. I’m African-American and gender-fluid (any pronouns), and I’m aroace, which plays a large role in my storytelling, as you may have guessed. I’m diagnosed with ADHD and am currently pursuing and autism diagnoses, and I maladaptive daydream. A lot. Most of this book was written from my daydreams. I am an incredibly romantic person, as you’ll soon find out, and a huge nerd. I doubt this page will become popular, but I’m open to questions about myself (and of course, the novel) if anyone ever wants to know.
