Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! Throwback to my first couple months learning photoshop. This was a photo study with a short time limit and no color picking. I did 8 to 16 of these timed paintings every day for several months to push my decision making process faster. I didn’t know how to use opacity, brush pressure, or layers at first, so this painting is a hot scribbly mess. Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! These wildly costumed dancers were built by the program #ganbreeder under my guidance. You input terms and the program combines visual traits from each term to create a final image. For example, this has visual traits that are 67% macaw, 16% handkerchief, and -87% barn. (Along with a bunch of other traits). As you modify the traits, the computer builds a new image to match the new traits. Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! More #heavypaint sketching! It’s trippy on an old iPhone because my fingertip covers a good 10th of the drawing area and the rest of my finger covers a lot more. For example, my fingertip is larger than the entire head in this painting. Each color represents a different material (i.e. “ocean,” “snow,” “sky,” or “trees”) The software uses deep learning to generate the most likely realistic combo of the materials and shapes you’ve chosen. I got these by changing the materials and times of day on a single, 3 color drawing. You can do much more complicated scenes, but the level of result with even something as simple as this is truly stunning. It’s literally just a triangle in the middle of a page! That’s it! Definitely check this free demo out! This is early stage technology, but it’s already apparent that this type of software will play a huge roll in the creation of realistic digital art in the not too distant future. The frequently joked about “make it good” button in art programs may cease to be a joke uncomfortably soon. Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! This is a painting from back in college when I mostly painted on a single layer. This was done without any masks, fancy brushes, photobashing, or even overlay layers... just a round brush. I didn’t know about any of those things yet. I also didn’t know you could hold shift to make a straight line. ...So this was annoyingly difficult. The color one only has yellow, red, black and white. Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! I’ve been having fun doing 3D sketches. Im playing with displacement maps, vdb voxels, and shadow renders. This is all just a cube with a displacement map... nothing more. No real geometry. These were all done by rotating and scaling a displacement map. It’s kinda like taking an adventure to a distant land. *Sound On* Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! I’ve been playing with the TRNIO app for awhile now, and it’s just amazing. It builds a 3D object by cross referencing a bunch of different photos you’ve taken and comparing their similarities and differences. In practice it means you can take 3D photos. Instead of grabbing a single photo of something for reference, you can now pull an object out of the real world and place it in a digital world. It is a simple app to use, but the technology driving it is truly science fiction.
