Scintilla (A spark or trace of something)
Chapter 4 - Fuscous (being of a somber or dark color)
It was a good thing that Hayami barely slept, she knew how to run on little energy. Making sure that she napped when she got home that day she woke up at four in the morning to get ready, with a glance out side she glared at the still dark sky. From the words her sensei spoke the day before she had a feeling that this test was going to include a lot of physical movement. Instead of her usual down style she pulled her long hair into a pony tail and then a plait tying it off at the end. Hopefully her hair would stay out of the road now. Hayami started to fell the nervousness and worry enter her body again, her breathing was shallow and her heart was pounding. Trying to push past it she made her way out of her house and to the training ground grabbing an apple on her way past.
She saw the other three walking to the same spot and muttered a greeting to them. After waiting five minutes Hayami sat down on the ground using her bag to rest her head. If her sensei was going to be late she was going to nap.
Soon enough the sun started to rise which woke Hayami back up. Naruto was now sitting beside her seemingly going in and out of conciousness.
âAny sign of him?â Hayami asked stretching her legs, both Sasuke and Sakura shook their heads.
More time past and the students were getting weary it was nearing the afternoon and their sensei still hadnât made an appearance.
âYo! Good morningâ Shouts came from two of her team-mates and their sensei explained that he had seen a black cat and had to take the long way around, which the students sweat dropped at.
âAlright this clock is set to go of at twelve, the assignment today is to take these bells from me by noon, those who canât do it donât get lunch. They will get tied to a pole and I will eat my lunch in front of you.â Hayami watched her team mates reaction to this cruel news. She had never been so glad in her life that she had broken the rules, granted the apple she ate wasnât much but at least it was something. She looked at the bells that her sensei held, they looked like ordinary bells,
âThere are only three bells though and four students. So someone has to fail?â Hayami looked to her sensei as he nodded.
âSomeone will have to fail, and that someone will be sent back to the academy.â A panicked expression drew on the young girls face as she looked to her team mates. âNo doubt that Sasuke will get one, that leave us three fighting over the other two.â âYou can use your weapons, you wont be able to take the bells from me unless you come at me with the intent to kill.â Hayami reached into her weapons pouch counting the amount she had, she knew she had to stay calm but to beat a Jonin would be difficult they had only just graduated from the academy and even that wasnât set in stone. She heard the complaints from Sakura and Naruto nodding her head along with what they were saying. âThose who arenât skilled enough complain more, just ignore the loser, you guys can go when I say startâ Hayami thought back to what Kaori had been teaching her, âstep back, and think about what you have to do, have a plan,â as the girl prepared herself to move, she watched a Naruto ran at their sensei trying to stab him. The man in a flash without any of them seeing had Naruto by the head with his own kunai pointed at him âI didnât say start yet-â All of us took a step back â-Its alright, at least you came at me with the intent to kill, how do I put this, Iâm starting to like you guys, readyâŠStartâ
Hayami quickly hid in the branches of a tree, âOkay, Sasuke is hidden in a tree and Sakura is hidden in a bush and Naurto isâŠoh no,â Hayami watched at the not so bright boy stood in front of their sensei, asking for a fight, ânever mind themâ Hayami took this distraction as time to think of a plan, she knew that there was no way that she could take him on herself, he clearly demonstrated that. âill teach you the first shinobi battle jutsu, Taijutsuâ Hayami kept an eye out on the scene that was playing before her, seeing if she could find any sort of weakness. She watched as her sensei pulled out a book antagonising the blond Genin before said blond went in for an attack. âNinja shouldnât let their opponent get behind them.â
âNaruto! Get out of there, youâre going to dieâ Sakura screamed from below her, Hayami went to tackle Naruto out of the road but was too late as their sensei put his fingers where they should have not gone. Hayami was in shock, a disgusted look on her face as she saw Naurto get flung into a nearby lake, she quickly hid again now that she was out in the open trying to avoid Kakashi as much as possible. Â
Keeping a fair distance away from her target, Hayami tried to decipher a plan. The Jonin was too strong for her to take on and there wasnât much time left before noon and despite breaking the rules and eating hunger had started to crawl into her body gnawing at her stomach. âNaruto isnât going to be any use, he is to unpredictable to work with. Sasuke is too independent not liking to be helped by anyone and Sakura probably hates me for yelling at her, so most likely I wont be getting any help from any of them.â With a heavy sigh she turned back to watch the loud blond, noticing that he was now tied to a tree branch. Several shuriken and kunai came from her side imbedding themselves into Kakashi, covering up her shocked gasp with her hand she watched at her impailed teacher became a log. Realising that he used substitution jutsu she quickly moved from her spot knowing that the Jonin would be near soon. Hearing Sakuraâs scream come from behind her, she stopped and hid behind a tree. Quickly trying to catch her breath Hayami had a decision to make, to go back and help or keep running like pray. Hayami could feel her heart beat pick back up to a faster pace, her breath shortening once again as she clutched her head and tried to shake the images of her burning house away. Bringing herself back down before she went to an extreme panic she didnât notice the white haired man crouching in the tree above her watching her like a hawk. âI wont run this time, I need to help them, thats who I want to be. That way dad will be proud.â Taking a deep breath in she turned back and raced to where she last saw her comrades.
Hayami quickly found Naruto waiting as he managed to cut himself down from the tree only to then immediately get caught back into it. Making sure that her Sensei wasnât in her sights she carefully made her way to him. Resting his head on her shoulder she raised up and cut the rope. âTh-thank you Hayamiâ
âHey Naruto, do you wanna help me set up this trap?â Hayami raised her head from looking at the ground only just now noticing the blond boy had raced off.
It didnât take long for the young girl to set up her trap a simple snare trap like one the Jonin used against Naruto, hiding in a bush near the trap she rested waiting for her teacher to come for her âWell look who we have hereâ Hayami straightened her back in fear as she slowly turned her head to face behind her coming face to face with the man she was waiting for. With a jump she darted out of the bush bringing one of her Kunai up for defence. âWhat are you planning on doing here?â the older man straightened out bringing his book back up and lazily leaning on the tree behind him.
âWell my plan was to hide.â a chuckle came from Kakashi at the young girls honesty.
âYour team-mates are out of commission so what are you going to do?â The girl started with a front on attack her teacher mentally comparing her to the idiotic blond form before. Dodging the girls swings he moved in a circle before the girl jumped back breathing heavily. âhmm are you done already?â Kakashi watched as Hayami threw two Kunai at him one he caught between his fingers and the other flying way off to the side, missing him by a large margin. âYou might want to work on your accuracy, but I give you points for tryingâ Kakashi stopped as he saw the girl with a small smile shaking her head.
âI didnât missâ proud of her plan working Hayami lowered her guard and in a flash she felt herself be suspended in mid air, a rope around her mid section. âHuh? HUH?â the girl looked around in surprise as she saw that she was placed into her own trap with Kakashi standing where she was.
âShinobi see through deception, remember thatâ She watched as he walked away no doubt going to terrorize another of her team-mates.
Sitting in between and angsty Sasuke and a tied up Naruto, Hayami was stirring mentally, the tension in the air was grim as the students awaited their fate. âWell with the results of this test, there is no need for any of you to go back to the academy.â Sounds of glee came for Hayamiâs side as Naruto and Sakura had bounds of relief wash over them.
âWait so that means the four of us-â
âYes! The four of you must quit being shinobiâ the happiness that the four young teens had vanished from their body completely, different emotions spurred within them. Hayami was met with a devastating sadness, thoughts of disappointment filled her head, she kept only some awareness in her situation trying to ground herself in reality before she burst. Hayami heard Narutoâs protest and tried to focus on his voice repeating everything that was said so that she properly took it in. âYou all have to quite because none of you have the qualifications to become ninja.â From her right she felt Sasuke get up and attack the man who had just destroyed her lifeâs purpose, still in a daze she watched as the older man easily took him down and step on him. âDo you kids think itâs easy being a shinobi, why do you think we are in teams huh? Why do you think that shinobi work in squads huh?â Hayami could feel the annoyance radiating off of Kakashi, âIts teamwork, you four may have gotten the bells off of me if you had all worked together,â
âHold on, if its about team work then why is there three bells instead of four? If all four of us were to go for it there would be someone held back, we would have fought!â Hayami watched finally being brought back to the present.
âThats the point, this test is supposed to pin you against each other, your supposed to put your own interests aside and work together. But instead, Sakura, you were only worried about Sasuke, not even knowing where he was and didnât assist the others, Naruto, all you do is go on your own, Hayami despite you going back to help your team you still decided that it would be best to do it alone. And you labelled the others as hindrances and acted on your own accord. We work in squads, there is no doubt that we have to be strong on our own but teamwork is more important then that, individual actions can cause the team to fall into crisis and that can lead to death, for example, Sakura kill Naruto or Sasuke dies, Hayami kill Sakura or Naruto dies,â Hayami jumped in between Naruto and Sakura watching in surprise, âThis is one situation you have a hostage taken and two or three people being killed, every mission you risk your life.â
Hayami huffed in relief as the man stood from being on top of Sasuke and walked over to a stone.
âLook at this stone, this stone has many shinobi names engraved on it these are all heroes of the villageâ
âThat I like that! I want my name to be on the stone, a hero, a hero!â Hayami frowned at the boy she picked up on the way that Kakashi had looked at the memorial stone that this was not something to be joked about. The sadness and pain she felt from the older man twisted in her gut uncomfortably.
âThey arenât ordinary heroes-â
âReally? What type of heroes were they, hey?â Hayami gave Naruto a hard jab in the ribs not that he felt much of it he still looked at her in shock. The silence that came from the older man stabbed Hayami in the heart.
âThey were all killed in actionâ
âKilled in action?â
âThey died on a mission Narutoâ Hayami couldnât stop the pain from intertwining with her voice as she looked down at the ground.
âThis is a memorial, there names of my friends are etched in this stoneâŠâ the heavy atmosphere press down on Hayamiâs chest watching as the others around her moved uncomfortably. âI will give you guys another chance, though this time it will be harder, those who want to have a go can eat lunch but donât let Naruto eat any its a penalty for trying to eat before everyone else. If anyone lets him eat they will be disqualified immediatelyâ
Sitting back down in between Sasuke and Naruto Hayami sat silently picking at her lunch. The grumbles coming from the tied up boy wouldnât stop. Â
âIts all good Iâm okay with not eating lunch, no sweat, dattebayo!â With guilt rising in her stomach Hayami lifted her lunch to the blond.A confused sound came from two of her teammates as Sasuke looked at her curiously.
âHere eatâ Lifting the chopsticks to the blondâs mouth she attempted to feed him.
âW-what are you doing Hayami? Kakashi Sensei is around somwhere?â the pinkette warned. A shrug coming from the other girl in return
âItâs okay there is no sign of him right now, all of us will take the bells together.â
âYou need to eat Naruto, you need your strength. And if we do have to work in a team, It would be pretty bad if we did leave our team mate go hungry.â looking back at Naruto, Hayami raised the chopsticks again. Tears forming in said boys eyes as Sakura offered him her food as well.
A large dust cloud formed in front of the teens as their sensei lunged at them.
âYou defied the rules and you know what that means, do you have anything to say?â Clouds forming behind the grown man Hayami jumped up in front of the others.
âIt was me, it was my idea donât let them be punished for my doings.â
âBut, but sensei you said that, you saidâ
âWe are a squad right?â
âThatâs right the four of us are a teamâ
âThatâs right! Thatâs right! Thatâs right dattebayo!â
With his hands still locked in a sign their sensei walked slowly towards the group.
âIs that so? The four of you are a team?âŠYou pass!â
The four teens look at him in shock panic slowly dripping out of their system several whys coming from three of them.
âA ninja must see through deception, in the world of ninja those who break rules and codes are branded as scum, but those who donât cherish and protect their friends are worse then scumâ A breath came from Hayami as she sat down in shock.
âYou all pass, team seven starts their first mission tomorrow,â
âI did it, I actually did it!â

Scintilla (A spark or trace of something)
Capricious (Impulsive; prone to sudden extreme changes in mood)
Once again Hayami was going to be late, she hadnât meant to be but the lack of sleep these past few days had caught up with her and she missed her alarm. Racing to the academy a quick thought past through that this would be her last time being late. Her pace slowed down a little as a strong feeling of nostalgia hit her. Taking her time she finally reached the window, with a quick knock on the glass, the whole class looked towards her. A small smile on her face Kiba walked over to open the window and help Hayami through. The tired look on Iruka senseiâs face was enough to make the class giggle.
âAgain, Furutaniâ Hayami smiled and placed her hands behind her back.
âI had to for old times sakeâ with a shake of Irukaâs head Hayami took a seat.
âGoal!â Two shouts came from the door Ino and Sakura made their way into the room and started to fight over who would sit next to Sasuke. Hayami payed them no mind it wasnât different to any other day, her mind started to drift once again. This time she could she flickers from a raging fire, Hayami drew a quick breath and forced her self back to reality, she turned to Kiba and played with Akamaru.
Hayami had her attention drawn away from the adorable puppy when she saw Naruto crouch in front of Sasuke, with a small roll of her eyes she gave Kiba a nudge as she watched the new found distraction. She could feel the electricity in each of their glares, before the boy sitting at the desk in front of them moved back and nudged Naruto into Sasuke with the boys falling into a kiss. The room became so silent as the tension rose and Hayami was bursting trying not to let out a laugh.
âAs of today you have all become full fledge ninjas, however you are all still Genin, from now on you will be in squads of three with one squad being fourâ the students started to mumble to themselves and each other wondering who would be in their team. Hayami didnât really have any complaints with who she would be with as long as she could get a long with them. âI get along with everyone in class except for maybe Sasuke because heâs on his own all the time and doesnât really talk, or Naruto just because he is so energetic all the timeâ Hayami thought. All of the students were curious as to who would be in the squad of four.
âNow the squad of four is happening because we have one extra person in our class, not to matter though we have evenly distributed everyone. You will carry out missions under the guidance of a Jonin teacher, now ill assign you to your groupsâ Hayami kept her ear out for her name and watched as people were put together.
âNow for group seven; Hayami Furutani, Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno and Saskue Uchihaâ Hayami sighed at the interesting bunch she had been put with. Kiba noticed her dismay and patted her on the back for some comfort.
âMan do I feel bad for youâ Hayami looked to Kiba seeing the amused smile on his face.
âGroup eight; Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka and Shino Aburameâ
âWanna swap teamsâ Hayami asked him.
âNo wayâ Hayami rested her head on the desk and waited for Iruka to finish dividing the students into their groups. She didnât have high hopes for her group, Sakura and Hayami didnât really have a friendship though Hayami didnât think that the girl would like her because she is obsessed with Sasuke, Sasuke was the last of his clan and kept to himself a lot, maybe Hayami could make some sought of friendship there though it was highly unlikely, and Naruto was a loud mouth. A sigh escaped her mouth. She would have to make this work somehow.
âIruka Sensei, why does an exceptional student like me have to be grouped up with this guy?â Hayami sighed again her new found hope fastly diminishing,
âSasuke has the best grades of the class, while you Naruto are at the bottom, this is how it is trying to balance the power of the groups it is also why you are in the group of fourâ the class started laughing, Hayami started to feel bad for him, no good could come from public humiliation like this. âIn the afternoon you will meet with your Jonin teachers, you are all dismissed.â
Walking out of the academy Hayami decided to eat her lunch in her usual spot, in a higam cherry tree, the weeping pink flowers create a nice calming atmosphere which Hayami loved, they reminded her of her home as weeping trees surrounded the area. Hayami had wanted to eat lunch with her new team but they had all ran off before she could suggest it, it didnât really surprise her she new that Sasuke would be on his own, Sakura would chase after him and Naruto would chase after her. What came as a surprise to Hayami was watching Naruto jump into the window that Sasuke was resting in, the window shut so Hayami could no longer see in, but as expected Sasuke came out victorious. With a huff Hayami packed up her lunch and jumped over to the window, with the intention of freeing Naruto from whatever bind he was in.
âHuhâ Sasuke looked towards the intruder, to find Hayami looking at him with such a confused look. He watched as she pointed to him then out the window then back to him. Her eyes went wide with realisation before she bent down to cut the ropes freeing him. âSo you arenât Naruto?â Sasuke looked at the girl with pure offence, huffing a no at her, he noticed that she still had a semi confused look as she was trying to understand the blond boys motivation for tying him up. Hayami knew they hated each other but this was too far. An even deeper confused look came upon her face as Sasuke grabbed her wrist and dragged her out the window behind him, with a short explanation of finding Naruto.
The pair walked together side by side in an awkward silence, Hayami had no idea how to approach the boy in a way that he wouldnât annoy him. She knew that he liked to be alone but this silence was slowly killing her, she was semi glad when Sakura called out Sasukeâs name
âYouâre such a shy bad boyâ the awkward tension was thick, âAre you prepared and ready to goâ Hayami fell back a few steps and watched a Sasuke ignored the pink haired girl. âHey Sasukeâ
âWhereâs Narutoâ Hayami speed past the two not wanting to get involved in, whatever this was, it confused her greatly. She came to the realisation that she was going to be in two moods for the rest of her life annoyed and confused.
âJust leave Naruto alone, all he does is pick fights with you, itâs because he wasnât raised right, you know he doesnât have parents rightâ Hayami took a step back next to Sasuke wanting to hear was Sakura was going to say. âHe always selfishly does what he wants, my parents would get mad at me if I did anything like he does,â Both Sasuke and Hayami glared at the girl, not that she noticed both other parties getting irritated at her. âNo parents to nag you, its just him alone. So his selfishness comes out,â Hayami felt hot, her anger was boiling.
âHow dare you!â Hayami stepped forward, both Sasuke and Sakura watching her now, âHow dare you say that, when you have no idea what it feels likeâ
âThe loneliness, Its worse then getting yelled at by your parents,â Sasuke added.
âWhats gotten into you two?â
âYou are annoyingâ Sakura looked like she broke, Sasuke started to walk away but stopped as he realised Hayami wasnât following.
âYou need to take a good look at yourself Sakura, see what you have and count yourself lucky. How dare you complain about that sort of thing, at least you get to experience it. I wish everyday that I could be with my family again but I cant because they are gone. Donât complain about an orphan to two orphans, it makes you patheticâ Hayami tried her hardest to keep her anger at bay but it reached its limit, the loneliness that she had been feeling days prior had mutated into a deep resting anger that had waited to burst. She felt Sasuke grab her wrist and pull her away from the now crying girl. Guilt followed after the anger, as she and Sasuke were walking side by side she got lost in her thoughts, she hadnât meant to make the girl cry she just lost control of her emotions. At least now the silence between Hayami and Sasuke wasnât as awkward.
Hayami layed on one of the desks in the class room watching Naruto bounce around the place. Sasuke was set on the desk in front of her and Sakura was leaning against the table to his left. For the eight time Naruto opened the door to the class room and checked to see if out teacher was coming. Hayami had her eyes closed as wathing the brightly dressed boy running around had started to give her a headache,
âNaruto wont you stay stillâ Sakura nodded along with the suggestion of other girl not that either Hayami or Naruto could see.
âWhy is it that only our sensei is late? Everyone else has gone off with their sensei and Iruka Sensei has already leftâ
âDont look at meâ Hayami moved her arm slightly and opened her eyes has the sound of clattering and watched as Naruto decided to set a âtrapâ for our sensei.
âWhat are you doing?â Hayami didnât think she could handle anymore bickering between the others.
âIt will be his fault for being lateâ âMan you really are asking for itâ
âA Jonin would fall for such a week trapâ and now Sasuke has joined in. Hayami took  her arm that was sitting over her eyes and placed it laced on her stomache. If her sensei was going to be late, she would take a nap. Or she would have if her team mates weren't so loud. She watched as fingers wrapped around the slightly ajar door, and shock fell onto her face as shot up watching the duster fall onto her supposed senseiâs head. Narutoâs laughter filled the room as did Sakuraâs apologies the room fell silent as all for young teens watched their new sensei.
âHow can I put this? As for my first impression of you guys? Well I hate youâ
Team seven made their way onto the roof and sat in a line waiting instruction.
âWell, first off, why donât you guys introduce yourself?â
âWhat should we say?â Hayami picked at her fingernails, she hated introductions, she didnât like talking about her self, she didnât like talking in front of other people about herself and she didnât like talking to strangers about herself.
âYour likes, dislikes, future dreams, hobbies. Things like that?â
âHey before that why donât you tell us about yourself?
âMe? Well my name is Kakashi Hatake, I donât feel like telling you guys about my likes and dislikes, ive never really thought about my future dream, as for my hobbies I have manyâ Hayamiâs eyes sparkled, she didnât know you could just avoid the quesiton like that, âNext you blondyâ
âMy name is Naurto Uzumaki, I like instant ramen, but what I like even more is Ichiraku ramen that Iruka sensei buys, what I dislike is the three minutes you have to wait for instant ramen and my hobby is eating and comparing ramen, and my future dream is to surpass the Hokage, and get the entire village to acknowledge meâ Well at least Hayami knew what she could get him for his birthday.
âAlright next is pinkyâ
âHi, my name is Sakura Haruno, What I mean who I like isâŠMy hobby isâŠMy future dream isâ Hayami watched with a mixture of disgust and wonder at the pink haired girl as said girl kept looking at Sasuke for her answers. âAnd my dislikes Narutoâ Hayamiâs face fell for the poor boy. Reaching beside her to pat his shoulder. Â
âYour next brownieâ
âuh- Hey, Iâm Hayami Furutani, my likes -uh- throwing knives and weeping trees, I dislike the smell of lavender and fire, my hobbies -uh-collecting weapons and my future dream, I guess is just to make my dad proud.â Out of the corner of her eye she saw the concerned glances from Sakura and Sasuke though Sasukeâs only lasted for a second before he went back to his usual aloofness. Though what caught her eye was they knowing look she got from Kakashi Sensei, whether he knew what happened or if he had been through something similar she didnât know but it gave her a strange comfort.
âAnd youâ
âMy name is Sasuke Uchiha, I have no likes in particular but a lot of dislikes, and I donât have a dream but an ambition, I will restore my clan without fail and to kill a certain man.â Hayami looked to the boy slightly concerned but mostly scared, though the more she thought about it the more she understood. The drive for revenge.
âGood! You all distinctive and interestingâ The call of her sensei shook Hayami out of her dark thoughts,
âTomorrow we have a mission, its a survival exercise,â the excitement from Hayami and her peers dropped, âThis is no normal survival exercise,â
âThen what kind of survival exercise is it,â The giggles that came from their sensei creeped Hayami out a lot, concern and worry grew from the pit of her stomach,
âWhy are you laughing, what's so funny?â
âWell of the twenty-eight graduates, only three groups will become Genins, the remainders go back to the academy, this âexerciseâ is actually a test with a 66 percent fail rate or higherâ Hayami lost hope.
âThen what was the graduation test for?â
âThat was just to test to see who had potential of becoming a Genin, prepare for this bring your ninja tools, we meet at five in the morning,â Hayami was stressed, maybe Kaori was home, he could help her right? Her thoughts were racing, she remembered how proud Kaori was of her. âI cant go back nowâ.
âOh and its best if you skip breakfast or you will throw up.â

Scintilla (a spark or trace of something)
CHAPTER 2Â Woebegone (Sorrowful, downcast)
Hayami was running late to class again, people would think that after six years of attending the ninja academy that she would have the capability of turning up to class on time. Running on top of the civilian houses Hayami raced against time to get to class. The thought of Iruka sensei scolding her for being late again made her legs push that little bit harder. A familiar giggle came from around the village, looking for the blond perpetrator she saw that he had painting the Hokage monument again.
She was secretly glad that the mischievous blond had decided to act up this morning it saved her from the scolding that he would no doubt get.
Reaching the academy she didnât hear Iruka yelling so she still had some time. Scaling the wall she located one of the windows that led to her class. As carefully as she could she stood on the sill of the window and knocked on it hoping to gain anyoneâs attention. When she saw Shikamaru look over at her she watched as he sighed before getting up and helping her climb through the window. It didnât come to any of the students surprise that the young girl had come through the window. Over these past six years She had been late a lot.
Smiling a good morning to her saviour of the day, Shikamaru gave her another sigh before complaining that she was a troublesome girl. She ignored the statement and sat beside him. Hayami had just managed to sit down before a flash of blond, green and orange was thrown into the room tied up by rope.
Hayami started to zone out her teacherâs yelling opting for day dreaming instead. Her mind often got lost in itself dragging her into unknown locations with unknown people. She started to dream of a forest with mystical trees with falling flowers the pink and purple hues mixed with a glittering silver. A nudge from her side quickly drew her back.
âWe have to re-do our transformation Jutsuâ Hayami felt the annoyance fill her system. With a look at Shikamaru he sighed and motioned to Naruto answering her unasked question. Standing in line after Shikamaru she watched as Sakura completed the task before vying for Sasukeâs attention. She held an inwardly cringe as the boy ignored her and completed the test himself, huffing before walking to his own.
âNaruto Uzumakiâ Hayami let out a soft groan whilst Shikamaru and Ino had complained outwardly. Everyone knew that he would do something stupid. Everyone in class watched as he transformed. The puff of smoke cleared and a naked grown up version of Naruto stood in his place making Iruka Sensei fall back from the blood rushing out of his nose. Hayami scoffed as she watched Naruto giggle already wishing for this day to end.
Kaori had managed to arrive at the young girls home before she did he let himself into her home with the spare key she had given him. After six years of looking after Hayami he looked at her like a younger sibling. Someone he could help guide and nurture, both having similar back stories it was easy to relate to the young girl and help her in ways that he had never got. Making his way to the kitchen he set down his tools and shrugged off his vest leaving him in a black long sleeve and pants. He re-tied his hair back and got to work cooking himself and the girl dinner.
Nearly done with the food The door burst open and Hayami came toppling in, seeming exhausted from her day. Hayami looked to the man in the kitchen and with a new burst of energy wrapped her arms around him. With a soft pat to her head she let go and set down her book bag by her front door,
âHow was your day Hayami?â Kaori asked as Hayami set the dishes.
âIt wasnât too bad. We had to re-do our transformation Jutsu again because of Narutoâ Out of the corner of the young girlâs eye she watched the older man grimace at the name of her classmate. âWhich I passed again, then the rest of the day went by boringly. Then I decided to throw knives for a while and do some extra training after our lessons had finishedâ Hayami sat and watched the food be served before thanking Kaori for the food and digging in. Her after school training had been hard as she tried to up her physical side. She had good theory which was something that Kaori and Iruka had praised her for but putting that theory into practice was a bit of a challenge for her.
âAre you ready for your exam tomorrow?â Kaori asked watching the girlâs reaction for any faults. He could see uncertainty in her eyes before she shrugged. âHow about I help you practise then?â The girl lit up and hurriedly finished her dinner.
Hayami sat in class early for once which surpised some of her friends, she sat next to Choji tapping her foot against the ground as her nervousness sky rocketed. She saw Choji offer her some of his chips which she gladly took a couple wanting something to take her mind of the graduation test. Not even day dreaming was helping her, the thought of her failing kept coming to mind which only made her more nervous. She went to bed last night confident after Kaori and her had gone over everything possible. But her confidence came crashing down once she set her foot into the classroom.
âWe are now going to begin the graduation testâ Hayami could feel her stomache in her throat as Iruka Sensei spoke. âWhen your name is called make your way to the next class room. The test is on clone jutsuâ A small speck of confidence made its way back into Hayami. At least she knew she could do this though she didnât know how she would do under pressure. Hayami watched as some of her friends went before her, Shikamaru, Choji, Ino, Hinata and didnât come back to the class. As her name was called she felt her self start to sweat, she had a constant loop of âyou can do thisâ going through her head trying to calm her self down in any slight way.
Opening the door to the other class room she stood in front of Iruka Sensei and Mizuki Sensei. Hayami tok a deep breath before putting her hands in the correct position and calling out the Jutsu. Three clones poofed behind her and a breath had forced itself out of her lungs. Both senseiâs offered her a warm smile and offered her a leaf headband.
Racing outside of the academy all Hayami felt was happiness seep deep into her bones she caught glimpses of her friends with their parents and she slowed down. Now a dark sadness started to move through her body. She looked at the leaf head band that she held onto not yet finding a place to tie it yet. She looked back at the other students and felt her eyes water a tad. The smiling faces of the children with their parents made a stabbing feeling start in her chest. Breathing had started to become difficult. Slowly and quietly she made her way past the crowd.
âIm so proud of youâ
âLook ma I did itâ
âCome on we will have a celebratory dinner, what would you like tonight?â
âYouâve done well, finally a ninja my boyâ
Hayami felt so unbelievably alone, she refused to let her sobs escape her body. She didnât have parents any more, she was alone. She made her way home and opened the door. It was quiet inside which only served to make her down mood deepen. She looked at the photo she had of her parents. Kaori had gone a couple of days after the attack to grab anything that might have made the girl happy. A couple of photos were untouched by the flames as well as a few weapons. Hayami stroked the image of her fathers face softly and sending a little prayer to him, hoping that she made him proud and that he was resting in peace.
Hayami was a little disappointed that Kaori hadnât made his way over by dinner time. She felt more alone then ever. Hayami decided that she would treat herself to some ramen as a reward for graduation, if no one else was going to be there for Hayami, Hayami was going to be there for herself. It was a little later then usual already dark out by the time she set off, she didnât want to be out too late but she was a ninja now she had to have confidence in herself. The owner of the establishment did look at the young girl funny when she walked in on her own as her usual pair wasnât with her but took her in anyway to eat.
It was very late by the time Hayami left the store deciding to help out the restaurant in anyway she could before she left. The owners were getting old and needed any help they could get. Walking home she could feel the heavy tension in the air as multiple ninja made their way around the place. Knowing it was better for her to stay out of it she dashed her way home.
Sleeping well never came to Hayami not after the night of the attack. She cant remember the last time she had a full nights sleep though she was only a small child back then so who knows if she ever had a full nights sleep. The sounds coming from her kitchen woke her up, she assumed Kaori was in there making her breakfast. Hurt seeped back into her heart, âhe would have a good reason for missing my graduation right?â Hayamiâs heart pounded as she got dressed for the day rubbing away the sleep from her eyes, making her way out of her room she saw what she had assumed, Kaori making her breakfast. He met her eyes and a thousand apologise left his mouth.
âI am so deeply sorry I missed your graduation Hayami, I got called for a minor mission that I wasnât able to refuse, and it went for longer then I expected. I would have come to see you later, but we ran into some trouble last nightâ Hayami gave him a small smile and muttered a forgiveness, she knew these types of things would happen it was the life of a shinobi after all. âSo did you graduate?â Hayami saw the excited sparkle in Kaoriâs eyes and her hurt was replaced by giddiness and excitement as she shoved her upper left arm into his face. The head peace was tightly wrapped around it so that most of the material was used up. Kaori picked the small girl up and swung her around.
âIâM SO PROUD OF YOU!â Kaori stopped swinging the girl around and rested the palm of his hand on top of her head and gave her a warm smile.

SOLITUDE ( THE ACT OF BEING ALONE) - CHAPTER 1
The rain kept pelting down feeling like knives as the young girl kept running. Her small legs were burning as the screams of her family her fading into the night sky behind her.
She had no where to go now that man had taken everything from her.
Her eyesight blurred as hot tears started to stream down her face, she had to hide or he would find her.
Pushing past the low hanging branches she came to a large boulder which she dashed and hid behind. She shakily bought her knees up to her chest, the fear running threw her veins was strong. She would rest a moment before running again. Her lungs and legs were burning a sharp contrast to the feeling of her icy fingers wrapped around her knees.
The smell of smoke quickly mixed in with the smell of rain. Sparing a quick glance behind the boulder she could see the orange flicking light of fire come from her home. The feeling of hope she had burning away with the sight of the distant flames.
She was quickly bought back as shouts and thuds came from a distance in front of her. A number of shadows had passed over head making their way to her home.
She ducked her head into her knees again hoping that the people wouldnât notice her.
âHey! Are you okay?â The voice of a young man pulled her attention, she quickly grabbed her kaiken from her pocket and and brandished it at the man. âIâm not going to hurt you, I want to help you-â The man took a few steps forward not intimidated by the young girl or her small dagger. âWhy are you out here?â The young girl quickly shifted her eyes to the left and froze up again, the images of her family coming back. She felt the tears swelling in her eyes again. The young man followed the quick shift of her eyes to the direction of the flames. âWas that your home?â the young girl looked down again.
âAre you going to hurt me?â the man looked towards the girl and shook of his vest.
âNo I am a shinobi of the leaf, you see-âthe girl looked up to see him pointing his thumb at his headband â-we came to help you, is it okay if I come closer?â The small girl finally eased her weapon down and gave a slight nod. The leaf shinobi came close to the girl and wrapped is vest around her to ease her shivering. âIs it okay if I take you back to the leaf village.â The small girl viably eased and nodded. The young man lifted her onto his back and raced back. He felt his back get heavy as the girl rested her head onto his shoulder. âRest now okay?â The young girl watched as the trees blurred past her finally as relief filled her senses and whisked her into a slumber.
Her body was sore, every part of her body had some sort of pain. He gave the young girl the strong feeling of dread as it told her that it wasnât a terrible dream. Her heart hurt the most out of all her pain, she didnât anyone would have survived the attack she felt so alone. Pushing her inner thoughts away she attempted to open her eyes. They felt as though they were weighed down by rocks, eventually opening her eyes she saw what appeared to be a hospital room. She slowly sat up ignoring the searing pain, no one was in the room with her and she had no clue about what to d, she didnât want to touch anything in case she got into trouble. These people had saved her she wanted to show that she was grateful to them. All alone she had time to think and her mind kept showing her the attack over and over again. She remembered the soft step of her feet as she went to find her parents. The screams and the smell of blood. She shook her head, she didnât wasnât to think about these things now. She looked out of the window at her side. The sun was shinning bright and she could see the people of the village going about their day, the soft birdsong and the slight breeze sow coming to her senses. âOh, your awake now, good-â the doctor motioned to the nurse at his side and she left the room â-how are you feeling?â The young girl shrugged her shoulders, and the doctor noticed the far off look in her eye. âCan you tell me your name?â The doctor gave the young girl a glass of water which she graciously accepted, rested the glass down the girl looked back out the window.
âFurutani Hayamiâ In her peripherals she saw the doctor write down what she was saying,
âHow old are you?â
âSixâ
âDo you know where you are?â
âHidden leaf villageâ
After several more questions the door to her hospital room opened again an elderly man walked in with the man that saved her. The doctor turned and bowed to the elderly man and moved to talk to him. The young man came up to her and sat by the bedside.
âHow are you feeling?â Hayami shrugged once again, she didnât really know how she felt there seemed to be a mixture of emotions sitting, bubbling in her heart but they stayed there blocked, she felt as though she could no longer connect with them. She felt empty. The young man gave her a sad smile and rested his hand on her shoulder. âI never introduced myself did I? My names is Morikawa Kaoriâ Hayami barely acknowledged him. âThe man who entered with me is the Hokage-samaâ hearing his title the man turned to the young girl and gave her a kind smile, he motioned for the other two to leave so that he could talk to the young girl. âHayami?â the young girl looked to the man as he commanded her attention. âIâm sorry to tell you this but we found no survivorsâ The man watched as the girl looked out the window seeming a million miles away, a soft I know coming from her, âyour family was of great importance to us here,â The girl nodded at his words, she knew that her family had helped the leaf ninja numerous times they were some of they few people that the leaf had trusted with making their weapons. Her father was always going on about how great the leaf ninja were. He held them in high regard. She remembered the sparkle in his eye when he would talk about them and how he always wanted to be one. She remembered his words, âIf ever we are in trouble the leaf is where you need to goâ, she was glad she held that promise. âDue to your familyâs close relation to the leaf and all that they have done for us I would be happy to help you out in anyway,â he continued âI will permit you to stay here in the leaf village, ill put you in a home and give you a monthly allowance to pay for your expensesâ Hayami stayed silent. Her family was gone there was no one left for her, she thought about what the old man had said, there really wasnât any other option for her, she had no home. Still looking outside she gave a small nod, she heard him get up from the seat, âill make the preparations for you.â
The day passed quickly she was happy to leave the hospital, Hayami followed closely behind the Hokage, she watched the people they past each giving a small bow to their leader. She also saw the small whispers they were giving each other as they saw her, she shifted inwards trying to shield herself from the glares. She noticed the older man look at her with a analysing look as if he was trying to see her inner thoughts. The two kept walking approaching a large building, the older man guided her inside they walked up a few set of stairs till they reached a hallway with numerous doors. They walked to one near the end before the man spoke. âThis will be your new homeâ the pair walked inside the bare apartment. There was a small kitchen to the side, a door which she assumed went to the bedroom and in the main room a small table and chair.
âThank you Hokage-samaâ she gave the old man a bow as he gave her the money he exited the home and Hayami was left on her own again. She made her way to the door in the apartment and entered into the small bedroom there was a small bed and another door, she sat on the bed and sighed, this would be her life now, on her own. A knock from her main door distracted her from her thoughts again. Opening the door she saw Kaori there with a small smile on his face.
âHey, how long has it been since you have eaten?â Hayami shrugged,
âA day maybeâ
âWell that settles it, come have dinner with me?â Hayami let a small smile ghost her face, she nodded and exited her apartment locking the door after her. Kaori smiled and rested his hand on her hair âHow does B-B-Q sound?â Hayami gave a nod and followed the man out of the apartment.
âSo Hayami, tell me about yourself?â She gave Kaori a blank look, âYou know, what you like, dislike.â The girl looked down at the cooking meat.
âI like the colour green, I donât like the taste smell of lavenderâ Kaori gave her a small smile. âI like throwing knives, my dad taught meâ Kaoriâs smile fell he could see the pain that it was causing her to think about her family. He placed his hand on her head again.
âI like throwing knives too, maybe we could do that tomorrowâ Hayami gave him a teary eyed smile with a nod. âIs there anything you wanted to do with your life.â
Hayami stopped and thought for a while. Her father was a bladesmith, and as much as she would want to carry it on she didnât think that it was for her. Hayamiâs father knew that much which is why he had a number of apprentices under him. Her mother was a house wife but she couldnât really see herself doing that either. She was only a young child she didnât think too much about the future more so about what she would do the next day, but she always wanted to see people smile, she wanted to help people as much as she could, like her father did. She gave Kaori a shug, he smiled at her. âWhy donât you become a ninja?â
âCould I?â Her eyes shone brighter at the thought, it could be a way to honor her father as he was always talking about them. Would he be proud of her if she did though? He should be right? She would be helping people. She already knew her mother would hate it. Her mother hated that she played with the weapons her father made. Let alone be a ninja.
âI am sure you could. Iâll talk to the Hokageâ Kaori watched as the young girl buzzed with a new found excitement.
It was Hayamiâs first day at the academy, it had been a few weeks since the incident. Kaori had been keeping an eye on her when he could between his missions, she was grateful for him. He had made sure that she was fed and well looked after even using his own money to buy her some new clothes and giving her dagger back after Hayami had explained to him that it was the only thing she grabbed of her familyâs.
He was now over at her apartment cooking her breakfast.
âAre you excited? Its you first day todayâ Hayami watched as he bounced around her kitchen. She was excited, she was able to have something else that connected her to her father. She gave him a big grin with and enthusiastic nod. She had become to open up more with the man telling him about all of the things she used to do. He was happy to listen to the young girl glad that she was able to find some sense of peace within her situation.
âIâm going to become a great ninja and make my dad proudâ Kaori pet her head, it was something that she had grown to love a simple touch, but it had shown her that he was there for her.
âYou better eat up then you need to get strong to become a great ninjaâ he placed the plate of fruit in front of the girl and she immediately started wolfing the food down.
The pair had made their way out of the apartment building and started to walk to the academy. âI need you to remember the way back home okay? I wont be there after to pick you up but I should be back later tonight to ask you how it went okayâ
Hayami gave a nod. Ever since Kaori had started to watch over Hayami he had been requesting less dangerous missions though he knew that he couldnât avoid them forever. That was part of being a ninja and he couldnât fight that. âIve left some money on your bench so that you can go get food later as wellâ he stated smiling down at the girl. She smiled back up at him with another nod. They had reached the academy now and walked to the front desk.
âHello, how can I help you today?â the lady spoke, Hayami stood on her tip toes to reach the bench so that she could see the woman.
âThis is Furutani Hayami, she is starting new todayâ The lady went looking threw some paper work before grabbing one and looking at the girl with a smile.
âHello Hayami my name is Masaki Asuka, ill show you to your home roomâ stepping behind the lady Hayami started to follow before turning around and giving a wave goodbye to Kaori. Hayami followed the woman down many halls till they finally reached a door. The lady turned to Hayami âThis one is your home room, donât be nervous alright. There are many other kids you age in here you will fit in nicely.â
Asuka waited till the young girl gave a nod before knocking on the door and opening it. âSorry for the intusion Irukaâ
âNo worries what is happening?â
âYou have a new studentâ The man named Iruka looked past the lady at the small child behind her.
âHello, im Iruka, why donât you introduce yourself to the classâ They lady had already left as Hayami faced the class.
âHello, my name is Furutani Hayami. Nice to meet you all.â The students in the class all stared at Hayami.
âWhy donât you take a seat, Hinata can you raise you handâ near the back of the room a dark haired girl shyly raised her hand, Hayami made her way over and sat beside the girl.

Indulgence
Chapter 1 - What is home and how do I get there?
I was really sick of the constant rocking of the boat, the two weeks on sea and I was done, I needed to feel land again. Tightening my leather shoulder guards I step out and head towards the deck, I could feel the thick tension in the air, already a dull pain was staring to form in the front of my head 'I wonder what he is angry at today'. Iroh turned his head to me in acknowledgement and muttered a good morning as I sat beside him, smiling back at him I reach for the steaming tea pot pouring myself a cup before acknowledging the human manifestation of anger. "What's up with Prince Pouty?"
"He's upset that he still hasn't found the avatar," black hair falls in front of my eyes shaking my head at Iroh's statement. 'The same old thing then' at least he is containing his anger instead of the constant yelling. With a roll of my eyes I turn my attention past Zuko to the beautiful scenery in front of us.
"Well I personally would love to go home soon, so I hope the old bastard comes out of hiding soon" I could feel the heated glare I was getting from Iroh, the glare quickly subsided as I jump back as a beam of light sot up from the horizon.
"Finally" quickly rising to stand next to Zuko, I look as far as I possibly can wanting to get a better look at the light. "Uncle do you realise what this means?" The two were going to get into another argument soon but my eyes kept focusing on the beam hoping it was the avatar,
"I wont get to finish my game?" another eye-roll for the day. No doubt that I would have a migraine by the end of the day.
"It means my search-" I felt Zuko's cold stare and turned to match him, "-our search, is about to come to an end" turning back around I race to the bow of the ship, slipping as I reach the railing still trying to find the source of the light beam. The exasperated sigh the came from the elder pulled my attention slightly, two fingers come to my forehead as I could feel the heat come from the prince. "That light came from an incredibly powerful source, it has to be him"
"or it could be the celestial lights" As much as I had hope I had to agree with the old man, the avatar hadn't been seen in a hundred years. How could two children be able to find him? "We've been down this road before, Prince Zuko. I don't want you, either of you, to get too excited over nothing. Please sit, why don't you enjoy a nice cup of calming jasmine tea?" with my sholders slumped I made my way back over to Iroh, it was hard not to do as he asked.
"I don't need any calming  tea!" I rolled my eyes again as I reached for the tea pot, though Iroh beat me to it pouring me a cup of tea with a smile, I bowed my head and whispered a small thank you. "I need to capture the avatar. Helsmen, set a course for the light" I watched a steaming Zuko pace for a minute, I swear eventually he will wear a hole in the boards with how much he paces. "And what about you? How do you feel?" I raise my eye brows as Zuko snarled at me.
"We can't get our hopes up, the avatar has been gone for a hundred years. You know that Prince Zuko, though I hope it is so I can get off of this wretched boat" He looks at me and we both know that we are thinking of home. I turn "Let me know when we get close" I walked back to my quarters ignoring the sympathetic look that Iroh gave me.
I raised my hand to open my door but I couldn't stop shaking, 'Come on Ami, just open the door, stop shaking, stop shaking Ami, just open the door, it shouldn't be that hard, come one Ami, you're not a child are you? Come on Ami,' I close my eyes and take a deep breath shaking my head, I lean my head against the door and just breathe for a minute before opening the door and stepping into my room.
I look around, as much as I hated being out on the sea it became my new home, the guards and staff became my friends, Iroh became my family and Zuko. I sat on my bed with a deep sigh, 'was I ready to go back? If we catch the avatar we will have to right? that's what we set out to do, catch the avatar. Zuko can get his life back, his family, his honour,' I snorted 'But what would I get back? I had no family, I had no home, the last time I was in the fire nation I was-' A sharp knock on my door interrupted my thoughts, I hadn't realised that I had been crying, my shoulders tensed as I watched the door swing open, Iroh waltzed in closing the door behind him with a soft shove of his hips.
"Here I bought you some tea and food," he sat the food down on the wooden desk his eyes trained on my form. "I made the tea so you know its good, and its fish for tea though I doubt that is surprising to you" a soft chuckle escaped with his words, though his eyes were glazed with concern rather then humour, "Do you mind if i sit?" Â I looked towards him and opened my arm and nodded, watching his movements. He sat at the desk, I noticed he had two plates and to cups, 'Well hes obviously here to stay' , I moved at sat in a more comfortable position on my bed grabbing the plate of food that Iroh had outstretched. We sat quietly eating our dinner, the tension was rising with every bite of food.
"Thank you," Iroh raised a brow at my words, "For bringing me food and looking after me for all these years" Iroh smiled at me but his eyes never wavered they still held concern for me, they always had. "Ill be fine Iroh, we both know that"
"That wont stop me from worrying," He raised his cup of tea to his mouth, looking at me as he sipped, "You don't have to stay with him you know, " My head shot up and I started to stutter out an excuse, "There is nothing that you can say that will get me to change my mind Ami, you are a strong girl" his soft smile was what I needed, I launched into the kind mans arms sputtering out a thanks. He chuckled and wrapped his arms around me, he somehow always knew what I was feeling. I sighed as  I unwrapped myself from the old man and snapped back into my professional behaviour. "We should check on Prince pouty, its gotten quite dark and you know him," Soft chuckles came from the both of us at the use of my and Iroh's lovong nickname for Prince Zuko, we head out and searched for the prince.
Iroh and I found our way out to the upper deck, I stayed back as Iroh stepped forward to talk to Prince Zuko. I watched as the two talked not wanting to get in the middle of them. I get along with both of them, Iroh quickly became a father to me after we set out, he was better then my own father and we both had a shared love for jasmine tea, what was there not to love. And Zuko and I had a weird relationship, we have known each other since we were little kids but I was always around his sister Azula and our friends Ty-lee and Mai, some days he'd treat me like an old friend other days i was just another disposable member of crew, though that was to be expected, he was royalty.
"-And the avatar is alive, you wont find him. Your father, grandfather and great-grandfather all tried and failed." Was Iroh looking for an argument, anything to do with capturing the avatar and Zuko would just snap. I tightened my robe around me the wind has howling.
"Because their honour didn't hinge on the avatar's capture. Mine does. This coward's hundred years in hiding are over." I walked out to the two men, well man and boy.
"Zuko, you still need rest," I watched as he rolled his eyes at my words, crossing my arms I went to continue, though Iroh stopped me leading me away from the brat. I shake my head, jerking my body riding the old mans grasp on me. "One day i'm going to punch him in the face" Iroh just chuckled at my empty threat. We walked until we reached my quarters.
"Ill go talk to him again see if I can convince him to rest," I bowed my head to him,
"i don't know why I had to go with you now"
"i hoped that he would listen to you" leaning against my door I sent a questionable look at the old man, "He cares for you," With a shake of my head I swing my door open, "Thank you Ami, for helping me look after him for these past years" I walked into my room and allowed the door to shut softly. I couldn't keep the smile from my face.
