This week I’ll be talking about my work as part of Urban Photo Fest in London.
The London Independent Photography - Crossing Lines group are presenting four professional and semi-professional European photographers. Collectively the photographers will be illustrating and describing both their current photographic practice and providing a narrative of how their photographic engagement and professional growth emerged; how it was developed, enhanced and enriched through the academy, fieldwork, toil and drudgery before unfolding into a sustainable mode of practice providing a foundation for a professional mode of operating.
Artists: Alina Kisina, Carla Duarte, Sarah Hickson, Angelika Berndt
The session will be moderated by John Levett, Visiting Research Fellow, Goldsmiths, University of London and Curator of the London Independent Photography Crossing Lines Group.

This project brings back many memories! I started working on it back in 2006 whilst in Armenia, Ukraine. The project is called ‘Dacha’ and the full series can be seen on my website.
A dacha is a country house in the former Soviet Union where families often spend weekends and holidays while living and working in the city throughout the rest of the year. While city life, including the modernisation and evolution of home interiors, has been greatly influenced by Western commercialism, consumption and aesthetics, the dacha can maintain a sense of humble beauty and timelessness through its clutter-free functionality and simplicity.

So much fun getting to know the children at the school in Kiev. A big part of this project is gaining the students’ and teachers’ trust.

Over the past couple of months I’ve been very busy teaching photography workshops to students at Barnardo's Meadows School in Kent. It's a fantastic school for children with special needs where the students are encouraged to develop to their full potential and where their ability is respected and celebrated. The students were brilliant and took some excellent photos. Here is a selection of their images.

I took these photos in London during the shooting of Riot Club, a short film directed by Scott Altman. They show the actors rehearsing and in between scenes. I find the film set environment to be slightly magical, and I look at normal interactions as if they are happening inside a film, capturing cinematic yet behind-the-scenes moments.

I spent the weekend shooting at Subtitle European Film Festival. It is Ireland's only film festival of popular subtitled European films with a fantastic line up of filmmakers and stars!
Above are photos of Spanish actress Olivia Delcan, Danish actor Elias Munk and Finnish film director and screenwriter Aku Louhimies. I found them amongst the crowds with my camera!

It was so much fun to be shooting at Kilkenomics festival a couple of weeks ago. It is hosted every year in Kilkenny, a lovely Irish town, and is the world’s first economics and comedy festival.
Here is a photo I took of the hilarious Dara O Briain and David Mcwilliams!

Last Thursday was the opening of ‘The Disinherited’ at theprintspace gallery in East London. It was such a great night and thank you to everyone who came along. The exhibition continues until 17th October, Monday-Friday 9-7pm, 74 Kingsland Road E2 8DL, so theres still a chance to see it!
Below is a bit of info about the show and exhibiting artists:
‘PHOTOMONTH EAST LONDON 2016 launches with The Disinherited, a show of specially commissioned work by three talented and culturally aware photographic artists: Alina Kisina, Heather McDonough and Ed Thompson, curated by Maggie Pinhorn Director of Photomonth East London.
Each photographer has chosen to follow a subject of social significance. The main title of the show is inspired by an early work of Picasso painted in 1903*.
Children of Vision
Alina Kisina a Ukrainian born artist has documented the children of a special school of art for the blind/partially sighted in Kiev. In a touching and immensely positive project she uses the medium of portraiture to transcend the stereotypes of ‘ability’ and ‘disability’ to illustrate how creativity can transform lives.
Leave to Remain
Heather McDonough found that volunteering in the French refugee camps led to a steady stream of encounters – with residents whose fragile lives have unravelled, fragmented and reconstituted in a remote and strange place – and with objects, whether waiting for their purpose to be fulfilled or lying spent and discarded, or else in limbo, useless and abandoned.
Big Red
Ed Thompson chose to write a visual essay on homelessness. ‘Big Red’ is the story of Stuart whose circumstances led him to turn his back on the stresses of London living in favour of a nomadic existence in his Big Red van. Ed embedded himself with Stuart to capture his uncomfortable but optimistic life.

This is me giving a talk at Light House Media Centre. I love giving artist talks because what's essentially required is for me to be present and to be me.
