I’ve been slacking on posting updates lately 😅 So I loved this book. It was inspired by The Phantom of the Opera (which I’m obsessed with) and all of the nods to the story made me so happy. I really enjoyed the characters, they were probably my favorite part. They were all just so intriguing and/or lovable. The world is interesting and quite detailed so I’m excited to see more of it in the sequel. The plot was twisty and turny, and maybe a bit confusing, but in a way that kept me on the edge of my seat and screaming at the end. So…I got curious after making my first Hogwarts House name board thing and decided to do one for my name in each house. Extra, I know, but it was fun. First board here is Slytherin which is my very close 2nd house (if I wasn’t such a book nerd I’m convinced this would be my primary house haha). Next is Hufflepuff, which would be 3rd but I don’t rank very high for it. And lastly, Gryffindor is 4th because I barely chart for it. What does it say about me that I rank so high for Ravenclaw and Slytherin and have barely any Hufflepuff and Gryffindor in me? 😅 Anyways, I love how all of them turned out (and that there’s books in each one)! It’s kinda hard for me to give memoirs, especially ones with such heartbreaking topics, anything under 5 stars because…well that’s someone’s trauma that I’d be rating as if I didn’t find it “good enough”. It’s kind of a weird situation. But I do, truly, think this is a 5-star read. It‘s raw and real and eye opening. There’s a lot of messy misinformation thrown around about the immigrant experience and I think to read the real stories of that experience directly from immigrants and their families is monumentally important. Would recommend that everyone and their mothers pick this book up. I finished this book the last day of August but I forgot to post about it. I really loved this book. It taught me about the inner workings of therapy (which is something I’m interested in pursuing as a career) as well as teaching me a lot about how to navigate life. It was heartbreaking at times and hilarious at others, but all around a fascinating look into the lives of different people, only to find how connected we all are. I HIGHLY recommend this book to just about anyone. So I haven’t posted a TBR photo for the month in a while because I got away from making monthly TBRs. But this is a special occasion because this TBR is for the monthlong Bookoplathon! Becca (from the Booktube channel, Becca and the Books) plays this wonderful bookish monopoly game every month to decide her TBR and this month she’s hosting a readathon based on it! I greatly enjoyed this book. I love what Caitlin Doughty has to say about death/mortality and the way we have become too frightened by it. It’s an oddly comforting discussion in my opinion. In talking so openly about death, the way it is and the way it could be, the concept of it becomes much less daunting. I’d say that if you want to read about the death field and/or have your thoughts on death and mortality be challenged (or affirmed if you’re already more open-minded), then this is a book for you. I read this book a while back but never posted a review for it. I read it on audio (which I would highly recommend as it’s narrated by the author) but I know it’s a book I’ll want to go back to and reference in the future so I got a physical copy of it too. If you want to learn about what the feminist movement actually is, what it should be, then read this book. If you are a white feminist, then you should definitely read this book. Reading Rush Wrap Up // Alright, so first I want to mention the controversy going on around the reading rush. There were a number of mistakes made this year by them and had there only been one problem I might be able to say “accidents happen”. But it was multiple counts of carelessness that truly could have been so easily avoided. I also don’t feel like the apologies given for any of these instances felt very genuine. I will definitely be more cautious with my participation going forward. But I did participate this year and read 7 books in 7 days!
