💀 Book Review ▪️ Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory 🏺
Tumblr media
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory" by Caitlin Doughty
Genre: Non-Fiction, Memoir Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Armed with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre, Caitlin Doughty took a job at a crematory and turned morbid curiosity into her life’s work. She cared for bodies of every color, shape, and affliction, and became an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. In this best-selling memoir, brimming with gallows humor and vivid characters, she marvels at the gruesome history of undertaking and relates her unique coming-of-age story with bold curiosity and mordant wit. By turns hilarious, dark, and uplifting, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes reveals how the fear of dying warps our society and "will make you reconsider how our culture treats the dead."
Reasons why I picked up this book: 💀 I like the song (Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by The Platters) 💀 I am equal parts curious and fascinated by mortality, life philosophy, and that sort - in short, death talks
My review is pithy and straight to the point. It's brilliantly written, more so, excellently narrated by the author - Caitlin (@thegooddeath) herself.
A few years ago, I was dead set (no pun intended) on making the most of my life. I went batshit crazy on my indulgences and ticked off my pseudo bucket list, one trivial goal at a time (try this cheesecake, buy that dress, date myself next weekend, etc.)
One day while looking up Latin phrases, I chanced upon the phrase Memento Mori - "Remember you must die." It embodied the exact sentiment I had but nobody else shared. To live life fully, you must embrace that death, one day will come knocking on your door. I felt massive relief learning that phase.
To immortalize that belief, I got a skull tattoo. A lot of work went into it. I decided to sketch it one pandemic morning, added florals for a feminine touch, booked an appointment with my tattooist friend, and on December 2020, I "earned" it.
I'm fortunate enough to have a mother that doesn't fear talking about mortality. It's important. Acknowledging death gives you more freedom. Denying it locks you up further and makes you more self-conscious and a magnet of your own fears.
Sure, death scares me in some way. But it's not really about death. It's more about the potential pain I'd feel. If it's my time, I'd rather have it done quickly. There's more death in living paralyzed or purposeless than being lifeless and breathless.

As I wait on a recipe thats never been written down that's 3 generations deep in my family, I'm thinking of my many associations of consumption and grief while listening to this classic thanatogastonomical vid by @TheGoodDeath(ft @sarah_calavera cooking)
This is a different experience for me, because this is a food that I had brought to the same house, for the same purpose, in part for the person who is no longer here. It doesn't feel quite right, but it also feels most right.
Good. It's what I can do.

The Old Williamstown Morgue - My Experience
I was going to put this on instagram, and then I was going to write one post here about it, on my freshly created tumblr. Now as the word count on that post is over 1500 words and still growing, I’m going to split it up. This is Part One. Other parts can be found here as they appear.
Yesterday, I went for a short walk at about noon than ended up as a train trip to Williamstown. It took 4 hours with at least 2 hours of walking involved.
During a conversation with some locals, I ended up talking about the Mortuary Train at Fawkner cemetery. They directed my attention to the Old Williamstown Morgue. As I meandered with Xannie to the centre of Williamstown from Williamstown Station, I spotted it on Google maps and went to see what it was about.
While the small, well labelled bluestone rubble building was viewable from the street in a very industrial looking area, it is actually a part of the seaworks precinct. Which on a random Sunday happened to look like an industrial area that had an open gate with hours on it, a sign with a map of attractions and signs for the back entrance to the pirates tavern. To which I was convinced was a children's themed venue, but was actually a small but proper pub that's a part of the Williamstown Maritime Association.
I made a beeline straight for the morgue, which was locked. I cannot find any clear opening times, and honestly I don’t think there are any, but there is a ghost tour that includes the morgue. If I can find a way to get inside, ideally with a historic society member (rather than a titillating ghost tour) then I'll add an update. Perhaps writing my curiosity down here about this site and others like it will lend credibility to my request. Photos, such as this one on the heritage council victoria website, of the interior do show prop cadavers hanging from the ceiling, and on an examiner's bench in a way that toes the line between amusement park attraction and historical reenactment.
Tumblr media
I am personally not interested in ghost stories and horror movies, but I am curious about how we treat the dead, how we did in the past, our relationship with that history and what is says about our values as a culture. I think Caitlin Doughty describes the ideal version succinctly as "the good death" and when looking at the history that surrounds the Old Williamstown Morgue, it's pretty clearly a tale of what most would consider "the bad death", although not the modern kind.
The Williamstown Morgue rabbit hole is a deep one, it ties together pretty much the entirety of death culture in Melbourne in the 19th and early 20th century.

Got to meet Caitlin Doughty @thegooddeath at @powellsbooks last night! She's exactly as funny and kind as you imagine she is! If you don't watch Ask A Mortitian on YouTube, you should! It's one of my favorite channels, I love learning scientific stuff and she keeps it humorous and sensitive! She read to the (huge) group at the bookstore last night from her second book, and it was just so informative and delightful! 😃💀⚰️📚 #thegooddeath #caitlindoughty #askamortitian #powellsbooks #smokegetsinyoureyes #fromheretoeternity #youtuber #socool (at Powell's Books on Hawthorne) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo41GKmHu_b/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wl1vn7wh2w32
