The Creativity Of Chicago
Whilst researching today I managed to find 4 separate poems/songs in one newspaper issue. In my experience this is special as I've only found individual poems and songs scattered about many many issues. I am however a novice when it comes to this kind of research, either way it is quite exciting for me.
Below you'll find images of the poems and songs taken out of the Chicago Daily Tribune, this specific issue being published on June 13th 1875. I'll also be providing typed versions of the poems as some of the images are in bad shape.
A City Poem by Casewell A. Sharpe

For those having trouble reading the text in the image, here is the typed version.
"You may talk of life in the country,
Of its emerald retreats:
But give me the surging city,
With its busy, crowded streets;
Where there's many a hasty meeting,
And languishing farewells,
Between rosy, dimpled maidens,
And impecunious “swells.”
You may talk of roaming the meadow,
With your true love, hand-in-hand,
And plucking the dainty daisies
That deck the loamy land;
But out in the ivory sun-glare,
In trappings fine and neat,
Let me stroll with a palid beauty,
Through an unfrequented street.
You may have all the rural pleasures
Your ardent heart may seize,
And drink of the mecaron odor
That laden every breeze.
But give me the wild excitement,
And the restless, furtive glance
That leaps from the eye of a maiden,
In the sinuous, dreamy dance.
You may tell of the songs of thrushes,
That fall upon listening ears
Like the lute-tones of Apollo,
Or the music of the spheres:
But give me the tangled harmony
Of voices and guitars,
That floats from a bevy of maidens,
Out under the lambent stars.
You may stroll where the rich, pied blossoms,
With beauty all relate,
Have woven a perfumed carpet
For your desecrating feet;
But give me the long, bright salon,
Where, under the garish light,
Flit those embryotic augais,
In saintly robes of white;
Where the lights of the brilliant ball-room,
Or queenly, red-robed women,
All bright and debonair;
Where the flames of restless diamonds,
In the radiant saffron light,
Flash out like fiery dragons
From the sable shroud of night.
You may talk of love 'neath the willow
That bends with a sylvan grace,
Till it forms a leafy arbour
As a lovely trysting-place:
But give me the blandishing gaslight,
Let it either flicker or sneer,—
For there’s naught like a sly flirtation
Under the chandelier."
On The Stairs by George Blake

For those having trouble reading the text in the image, here is the typed version.
"When the brow is marred with trouble,
With the woe of life, and care,
It lightens when the music falls
In patters on the stairs,—
Of tiny feet that patter
Coming down the stairs.
Sometimes cross words are spoken;
Then little Blue-Eyes stares
In wonderment, and useless—
In silence on the stairs,
And checks the pretty clatter
Coming down the stairs.
Soon Blue-Eyes grows to manhood,
With all his gilded snares,
Which draw their folds about him,
And clasp him unawares:
Then if he falls—no matter,
Coming down the stairs.
Ah, mother! don’t be fretful;
For, to soothe your future cares,
You will wish in vain for music
Echoing on the stairs,
Of some tiny feet to patter,
Coming down the stairs.
Now no more the babe will rustle
At your knee for evening prayer;
Never more disturb by clatter,
Clambering on the stairs;
Only fancy makes the patter
Coming down the stairs."
My Own Bright Guiding-Star by Owen M.
Wilson Jr.

For those having trouble reading the text in the image, here is the typed version.
"When the twilight's first shadows are creeping
Mid the day-gleams that lingeringly die,
And the calm hush of dream-haunted even,
Like a peace-breathing spirit, draws nigh,
Does a thought of the absent one waken
A heart-throb as fond as of yore?
Comes a yearning for hopes long departed,
And a past whose young love-dream is o'er?
Though parted, though lost me, I bless thee;
For, when others were prone to condemn,
Then thou wert the first one to censure,
The last one my faults to condemn.
Though the gloom of the past pales the present,
And beholds the future afar,
Yet, 'mid life's heart-wrecks and hope-wrecks,
Thou art still my own bright guiding-star.
Though our paths with each set of sun widen,
And daily we drift further apart,
Yet memory's still true to the idol
That time ne'er can blot from the heart.
Though others have sought to defame me,
Though they smile on the ruin that's mine,
Though thy weak woman's will they have conquered,
Still the love of a life-time is thine."
The Whisper Of The Winds by R.C.H.

For those having trouble reading the text in the image, here is the typed version.
"I heard the winds whisper when I first met my love;
They happiness promis'd where'er we might rove;
And oft did they linger, soft and sweet, in my ears,
Banishing all sad thoughts, gently calming all fears.
I heard the winds whisper when the wedding-bells rang;
On the way to the church, while the choristers sang;
They whispered of bliss and sweet pleasures to come,
Dear joys of the household, when I took my bride home.
I heard the winds whisper when our little one died;
I fear'd that my darling might soon lie by his side;
Sad, sad was my heart then, while the wind whisper'd so.
When we saw our dear babe in the cold clay laid low.
I heard the winds whisper, and I shudder'd to hear
Those weird, wailing voices that filled me with fear;
They whispered the death-knell of her I loved best;
They whispered no comfort when I laid her to rest."

1935; Nebraska Suffers
Severe Flood & Tornado
On May 30th a flood caused by a severe storm that caused many rivers and tributaries to overflow. This turned into a massive flood that damaged hundreds of homes and killed over 100 people.
The very next day on May 31st a tornado formed in an area very close to that affected by the flood. This F4 tornado only served to ravage the already damaged streets of a reported 10-13 Nebraskan towns. Even more people would lose their lives due to this natural disaster, the lowest reported death toll for the tornado alone being 5 individuals.
This puts the total death toll of this horrible incident at a reported 113-145 people. This also occurred during the dust bowl so the damage done to surrounding crops and food storage should also be considered.
Below you'll find images from the Indianapolis Times newspaper published on June 3rd 1935 covering some of the damage done by the flood and tornado.

1983 Hedstrom B.O.S.S.
12-volt children's ATV
An interesting bit of 80's history, this 6 wheeled off-road designed children's ATV definitely stands out amongst the competition of the time.
The colored stripes along the bottom and the hard plastic shell should bring back a lot of good memories for the folks who grew up around toys like this.
Below you'll find images out of the 1983 Montgomery Ward Christmas Book, a fuse protection kit sheet for one of these ATVs, and some additional images of the toy.
