at first I tried looking for canon remarks but I couldn't find anything, not even on secondary less than reliable canon like toys and trading cards(His trading card describes him as a brilliant scientist leading a cutting edge research team when the Kraang kidnap him. Also his name is misspelled XD) So I can only rely on the Hippie factiod. And that's a movement that's major time in the spotlight was mid 60s to early 70s, so for him to have been old enough to be an actual flower child and not the child of the flowers he'd have to have been at least a teen in the 70s. So let's say by 1970s he's 15 (cause tmnt loves that age for plot relevant stuff) meaning he's born in 1955.
Meaning if the show starts in 2012 he'd be like 57 by the the start. This is of course assuming he was 15 and not a full grown adult during 1970. I just thought that would be a good year as while yes I could go back farther with things like Woodstock starting in 1969 instead, by being nearer to waning era of the hippie movement makes him a bit younger when having April. But even then he'd be in what, his 40s when he had April? And that's still a little odd. The whole Hippy bit was clearly made by the writers who did not realize how much time had pass from that era. But the consequences are still there.
You can get his age down by making him a child of a hippy couple instead I suppose making him born in the early 70s instead which would put him around 42 years old, making him 26 when April was born which is a lot better but that also has some very funny implications. Like yeah he thought his parent's Hippy lifestyle was so cool he did the Funky Bus and 70s Afro Perm himself.
Which is also very funny, and even more weird. Truly April was never going to normal.
Also yeah woe new ship just dropped: The most anxious set of guys you've ever met!
Featuring trying to impress him with your skills and composure while also trying to stop your kids being dumb[challenge impossible]
Kirby O'Neil being revealed as a psychiatrist, and then them doing basically nothing with that fact, is the crime of the century.
Like there is so many missed opportunities.
I need a dad to dad therapy arc between him and Splinter. Have some of that trauma Properly Addressed. Have them compare notes on parenting. Also it could've been a fun narrative device for backstory as well!
Maybe even have him talk to Karai about her complicated relationship with her own identity. Both about her being a Hamato and the whole mutant thing! Especially since he too was in a similar position(So was Splinter but for Karai that's a landmine of complex emotions)!
Have him be the straight man to the rest of the world's wackiness becuase "He's literally Just A Guy" but also use other aspects of his life too and how it informs his practice. He said he used to be "Kinda Groovy", play with that. What life path makes you a hippie, or lover of the 70s hippie movement, turned therapist? A movement with a big home-remedy culture vs clinical psychology. This is a duality that could also be played with there.
I would've loved to see how an actual counselor would handle the boys. But no, that doesn't inform his character really at all. Instead it's just a plot explanation as to why the Krang having him is very odd.
We could've had so many neat little things like that

He can have a little whimsy, as a treat!! Plus it would do good for her and April to have an actual dynamic as well, better demonstrates how April got her own way around people from him.
Also "proud father of 7", truly a widower4widower dynamic [joke]
But one thing; if he's around 31-32 and as we know April's one year older than the boys who are 15 thus making her 15 that makes him around 15-16 himself. That is a very young teen dad for your au. RIP
Also how old is he in canon, is that ever named dropped?

The short answer to your questions: Yesn't
See there's kinda three layers to the carapace of a turtle shell, the outer layer called the epidermis, the inner layer called the dermis and the layer in-between called the basal lamina. Now the basal limina(BL) where most things are made, it too has three layers with very fancy names: tratum basale, stratum granulosum, and stratum corneum. In the stratum basale, new cells proliferate. They replace old and dead cells. These cells are then pushed toward the surface of the skin. While Epithelial cells and keratinocytes, are found in the stratum corneum. Those make keratin. Now keratin is fun becuase those make up in humans things like finger nails and hair. Of course that's becuase we only have one type of keratin, meanwhile turtles have two, α-keratin and the one that's notable harder than the other, β-keratin.
The stratrum basale contains many sensory nerves, including nerve endings and mechanoreceptors. It also has glands, blood vessels, and lymph vessels.
Thus seeing that while Leo's scar is passed the epidermis layer, (with it cutting into one of his shoulder Pleural Scutes and it's taken away a whole Marginal scute, just barely avoiding his nuchal scute) what layer of the BL are we seeing? Do you think what we're seeing is a stylized tratum basale, stratum granulosum, or stratum corneum?
Turtles can slowly regrow these parts back(Though most of the studies I have seen put those around only 40% or so and even then full movement is not all there) but even still it had to have hurt. I mean assuming it's from Karai's stab wound, that means her katana went through his gular/humeral/pectoral(due to how these mutants are drawn in 03 all of these plates seemed to be fused together) plastron plates(Or maybe just his green scales, it's hard to tell) then through his shoulder, behind his dermis, which is where all the bone and what not is, then through the basal lamina, followed by his epidermis taking his Marginal scute, some of his Pleural Scute , just barely avoiding the Nuchal scute. And with how that cutting on the scute is jagged that seems to imply the blade was in-between the marginal and pleural scute's, ripping off some of the pleural like tearing away a hangnail and sending his marginal out the other way.
Luckily for Leo here while that middle layer exists as some soft yummy cells, the dermis and epidermis are not directly connected, so yeah the top side can be pealed while the bottom side can be pierced meaning it might not be as bad it look. It also could mean it's worse than it looks and the Utroms just have masterclass surgeons on their ships.
This means depending on how you view the injury either some or all of the nerves got ripped out. Slowly regrowing, going from numb to possibly highly sensitive depending on what layer of the BL we see here and how much actually grew back.
Either way a lot of aches and phantom pains are in Leo's future seeing as this injury still has some damage to the dermis, which is all of the shell bone thrown into one.
That is one traumatic injury!
I am not a herpetologist! So if I got something wrong feel free to correct me. This is just what I've gathered from what I've read

I was thinking about his scar here. His scutes have been torn off so I wonder. Does he still have nerve endings there? Like could he feel pain if it’s touched. I am aware his sheath right there is touching it rubbing against it ouch!

Well a line of the 1988 playmates toys, which appears to be based on the 87 tv series, have Raph as the youngest. Or rather a youngest.
With Leonardo at 16, Michelangelo at 15 and a half, and both Donatello and Raphael at a solid 15 (People)years, Raphael is part of a set of youngest twins.
Other weird things to note about the blurbs on these toys;
Raph is carrying and throwing 100 pound discs, there is no way he hasn't killed someone.
Both Raph and Leo are 5'1, Mikey is just a solid 5 feet and for some reason Don here is 4'0. Tiny little baby man.
Leo is the only one noted with keen eye sight and hearing implying some level of sensitivity. He is not beating the autism allegations.
Mikey continues to be the king of disrespect by twirling pizza's in one hand during battle, that's how little he thinks of his enemies fighting capabilities.
All of the boys have different birthplaces listed, they're not biologically related; the found family vibes intensifies here
What is a Turtle Fist Dagger? Idk but they all have them as a weapon along side a single kama!
So over all wild facts from this toy line, no matter if you think it has any influence on your view of the 87 turtles in particular
I hope one day we get an iteration where Mikey and Raph have that twin vibe I been obsessed with these two lately bonus I am picking on Leo lol Leo dealing with the bash bros trying to stop them from getting themselves killed would be neat.

Just realized we never really found out what beef The Ultimate Ninja had with Shredder.
Like us seeing the Shredder Helmet in the Nexus could've been a sign that he was there, and for some reason just loss his helmet like he did the championship. Or it could've been a sign that the Tribunal were there, likely to go to the home of Tengu to learn how to deal with the one's back at home. Though that's unlikely seeing as Ue sights him wanting to beat Shredder in combat as to why he went all death match on Leo.
"I have come to this dimension to battle Oroku Saki, the Shredder. But you stole that honor from me when you defeated the Shredder in combat. And so, for fame and glory, I must destroy you in his stead."
So then that begs the question why Shredder?
Is the title Ultimate Ninja something you have to defend and prove like Nexus Champion? Was Ue going down the list of Nexus competitors? That could also explain how he met Drako.
But it also could be something more personal like the Shredder beating Ue in combat, though that might not be likely as we see Ue not compete during the next tournament. And sure that makes killing Leo easier, but no one knew the turtles were going to be competing at first. So it's likely the host's, aka the Daimyo and his line, don't compete as they are the organizers. Even if in canon they are both skilled ninja.
I never really thought about this becuase the different times we see anything related to the Nexus is always so captivating I focus on that instead, but he's been on the brain recently(I was talking about how Leo handled child him with a friend) and it made me realize this.
Like what was my guy's deal fr?

Tmnt really needs to embrace modern NYC by giving us fight scenes in a concrete multi-level parking garage.
It could be done so well.
There's large spaces for wider shots with cars, cramped stairways, and elevators for more claustrophobic up close shots. There's darkness to hide, large roofs for some neat stylized silhouette shots, natural light filtering from the sides, kinda okay fluorescent lighting for more contrast/neat night time shots. Plus due to how every level tends to be built mostly the same, you can reuse backgrounds without it being intrusively noticeable
It's the perfect ninja playground for some cool choreography and stylized lighting shots
#I can't think of any time tmnt media taken advantage of that#Like I'd be glad to be wrong but I can't think of it#Is it becuase the giant car lots are not pretty to look at? I just found your blog, and I'm really excited to read all your thoughts on the various tmnt shows! Also my gaming machine is down right now so it's honestly a great time for a deep dive that'll take me awhile to get through it all :P anyway I'm bad at reblogging and thanking people for stuffs because anxiety so I appreciate all the long posts and many thoughts on the shows & characters
Thank you! I'm glad you find my stuff interesting. Right now I am most specialized in 03 and 07 but I am slowly taking notes as I am watching 2012 and 87(though 87's mini-arc episodic style of presentation is kinda making that go slow tbh. Curse you adhd for your odd rules) and let me tell you I have a lot of notes lol.
It's okay not to reblog everything, I mean what am I, the fandom police? I don't control your actions bro.
Personally what I found easiest to do for reblogging is to set up a blog that's just for tagless rebloging, that way if you have no spoons you can still reblog it and find that post later.
Anyways have fun reading, also rip your gaming machine hope it get's better XD

It starts out as just a one time thing.
Mrs. Morrison wanted to bake an old pie recipe, so Raphael helped her make it. It had been years since she made it, but it gave her comfort due it's history. Apparently it was one she only made with other people. Never alone. Listening to her explain the stories she has with the recipe. And okay, maybe it was a little fun. But it was just a one time thing becuase she hadn't eaten and was craving something that tasted like home.
It wasn't that he couldn't cook, but they took turns. It was chore that rotated alongside dishes, laundry, and sweeping.
So it wasn't a hobby of his.
Then Leo went away and Raph had more time on his hands and went out earlier. Just needed to clear his head. He ended up helping her clean up from what ever dinner she had before Raph visited her. He still can't figure out how this turned into making a sweet tart for later. And then she had him make some sweet rolls the next visit. Followed by some maritozzo after that.
So maybe he enjoyed it and had a little laugh as they did things, sue him. He got tasty treats afterwards! And she smiled a lot while they did that! Why wouldn't he enjoy it?!
Then the lair... There was no more lair left.
There was only rubble.
It was a risk even going to her that night. But he had to explain why he wouldn't be there for a bit. He wouldn't just, well, abandon her. She doesn't get too many visitor's, that's not fair to her. She'd be so worried! So he had to say an actual goodbye. Raph would miss her but it was for her safety. He went to her place and braced himself for what he was about to say. Only for him to fumble and she digged a little into why he would be "Busy". He couldn't say ninja's were after him, but he could say he was out of home and needed to spend more time away. He was... "looking for a new home". When she asked if he had a place to stay he lied through his teeth. Guilt racked through him, but she's safer like this.
She let him go with the demands to see her twice as often, and early enough for dinner. And he couldn't just let her cook for him, so he did that too. He should've stayed away. But he couldn't. Raphael had to leave his brothers, he didn't even know where they were!
So if he wasn't moving around Coney Island, he went to the old lady.
Mrs. Morrison loved stews, soups, and pastries. So he cooked and baked for her. Fresh food that wasn't taken from vendors with what little he could money he could find on the streets. Most of the time it was filling, hot, and made him feel good afterwards. For a little bit, he found comfort.
As quickly as he was there though, he left. No one should be able to connect them together. Least of all the Foot Clan.
She was safe.
He was sneaky and dead to the world.
When Leo found them, all of them, and they found a home he relaxed more. Quiet conversations and reconciliation was made. He wasn't the brother that left to Japan, the one full of anger, but he also wasn't exactly the dork who learned how to cut up newspapers into stars as a flashy trick. His brother was new, quiet, but peaceful. Still, being Leo though, he had Grade A "genius" moments. Like eating greasy take-out pizza after many months of only fresh vegetables, meat, and rice.
Idiot spent the night throwing up.
Their beloved fearless leader everyone, truly an intellectual.
So yeah, maybe the next night Raph made some homemade hot chowder for him. A bit heavier than his brother needed, but it worked. And he was only lightly nauseous from this.
Sensei then gave him one of those looks after the meal. Ya know, that smug look when you fell into his trap while playing shogi with him. Next thing he knows he somehow on cooking duty, again, but now Master Splinter is hovering over him. Tell him to cut this and steam that. Making him cook something with the food April and Casey brought them.
It takes him far too long to realize it's Ichijū-sansai.
Annoyingly Leo keeps this down easier than the pizza or the chowder. Seemingly loving every bite of it. Mentioning how it was nice to not have to be the one always cooking. The Ancient One did believe in idle hands in the kitchen. Well, besides his one. But that's just tradition. And Leo was apparently tired of being the only cook.
Another change in him, willingly sharing burdens equally.
So maybe Raph asked Mrs. Morrison what pastry she'd recommend to make his brother, who came back from his "apprenticeship" from Japan to help them "get a new home". She course did not have any Japanese recipes on hand, but told him to wait a few weeks for Mr. Rossetti to come by, she thinks she can get his cheese gnocchi recipe from him.
It's the oddest pastry he's made, and it's certainly no maritozzo. Simple but apparently tasty since Mikey kept trying to steal the batch. Leo seems to appreciate the small bowl of warm goods. As he should.
Anyone who cooks when Mikey's in the kitchen deserves an award. Mike doesn't believe in keeping his hands to himself. He didn't laugh when said turtle got "extra training" later, but he did smile a little bit.
Over all it was a good night.
Sadly Raph forgot that his blue brother is obnoxiously competitive and comes back with a plate of Gyoza and an uncomfortably sincere thank you. No matter what Mikey said, He Did Not Tear Up. Donny hitting the orange masked ninja was very satisfying and completely unrelated to anything.
Either way he wasn't going to let Leo on up his gift.
He went strait to annoying Casey about this and somehow walks away with how to make sourdough for Leo. Raph gave Casey some freshly made Onigiri for that. They had gotten a lot of rice as their first major restock. Too much really. Surprisingly though, next time he saw Casey he learned that April eat most of it. So he ends up making a batch just for her. Casey complained about that all week.
But he doesn't just cook for anyone for no reason or anything.
Maybe, Don finds Mochi on his desk after a long day in the week following that. But he earned it. Feeling under the weather like that and yet still keep working, that means special food privileges. That's it. And Raph's definitely not saying those little donut's Mikey found were his apology gifts under threat, but they were annoying to make. He will admit to giving Master Splinter those Dango sticks though. Way harder to make than it should've been. What's hard and easy for him to cook seems so arbitrary. Sensei's expression was worth it.
He was now on a role and nothing's gonna stop him.
A few more dishes, a few of their close friends. Angel had too many opinions on chili for someone who can't cook, and Leatherhead eats barbecue in a way that terrifies him. He's still figuring out how to give Traximus an apple strudel though. Space was an annoying barrier.
Raph doesn't know at what point this stopped being a one time thing, but now this is a hobby he has. He cooks.
It's nice.
To make something, to feed people, to give and see them happy.
There's something fulfilling about it.
But No Mikey he's not going to make a lava cake to celebrate the new "Justice Force Comic Issue Featuring The Turtle Titan", Go bother Leo about that!!!

Grandpa rat, father of all Splinters, the prime source before he splintered into new Splinters.
How did he even live that long????? Truly an above average rat
So at the end of your 03 timeline post, you may or may not have been joking about calculating Splinter's "human age". Either way I would request that you try. Both because it would be interesting, it's one of those things I think about a lot not just 03 Splinter, but for any version who started out as a rat. Because if you know anything about rats they have very short lifespans. Maybe he's from 'The Secret of NIMH' or some such.
I was in fact half joking.
The hardest part of 03 Splinter's age is how old he was when Tang Shen found him. Well that and figuring out the amount of time in between the different events leading up to Splinter's mutation.
Luckily thanks to the animator's wanting to save budget he's kept the same size. So it's very likely he's an adult rat rather than a juvenile. Which is a little neat factoid. This also means by the time Tang Shen find's him he's at minimum 6 or more months old. Though I read a rat care guideline that stated rats can be sexually active as fast as 6 weeks, every other source seems to say that 6 months is how long you get until your rat reaches adult hood.
Of course I could be wrong, those who know rat secrets feel free to chime in.
Now I did end up having to look through some article's to get this, but I do think these chart right here will help us a lot.
To save space, the rest will be under a read more cut.
The charts are almost the same but their from widely different sources, one being a more research study about average rat aging while the other one is from a rat age calculator site.
This is where I am getting some numbers from.
Now assuming after he mutates he ages like humans, in the same way his son's appear to be like teenage humans in mentality and growth, this means we'll add 15 years to however old Splinter was pre-mutation.
Also as you can see here Rats only live for about 4 or so years typically, however the oldest rat recorded from my knowledge lived to be around 7 or so. So a well taken care of rat, is a long lived one.
Sadly Splinter is a wild rat that Tang Shen just decided was hers now. This is presented as a show of her character, but tbh she's crazy for that. If she was doing wild stuff like that on the reg no wonder Yoshi and Mashimi fell for her.
Now between Tang Shen keeping Splinter and Yoshi dying had to have been at least two or more weeks, with that being the super low ball. The vagueness of how much time it passes for Yoshi to climb his ranks, then going to New York and being under the Utrom are not clarified but seemed to have the implication that both of these moments had a lot of time and build up thrown into them.
So between that and due to how mature Splinter seems post mutation I do want to say he's likely around 10 months at minim when they were mutated with my high ball answer being around a year. Making the low ball answer around 20 human years and my high ball around 30 years, with around 26 being my medium answer.
Adding the 15 years of mutation and fatherhood that means at the beginning of the series he'd be 35/41/45 and by my long timeline ranty post, the post canon would have him at 39/45/49.
He's a very tired middle age rat XD
But yeah the biggest issue with calculating Splinter's age is just how vague the past is, we don't exactly have much time anchors outside of day and night, so it's a lot of guess work.
So yeah here's was my crack at this. Might not be perfect, but hey it's somewhere to start :)

The lights of New York City, like all cities, are bright enough to block out the night sky.
There's no starry night in the city that never sleeps. Not unless there's a city wide black out. Something that would hide everything but the twinkling lights as the black sky became more vibrant shades.
When the power went out, the turtles enjoyed the ability to go out without hiding, it was the first time.
What was their reaction to the sky?
A sky with vast color and lights, all around them. Sure they would've seen pictures, but those are nothing to seeing it in person. They would've seen this night as they had fun with their new found freedom. Wheels moving with a speed none could see. But their laughter rang through the night. Magic to someone who's never had such an experience. They would've learned to enjoy their home lot more with no light. Restlessness settling down as that hunger was filled.
The next time they would see this kind of sky would be at a farm, somewhere safe in the far country side. Brother's harmed and recovering. A signal of what's to come, an omen for the future, the price for their lives.
But for now they experience wonders in their own home.
Dumpsters might've been amazing to them as kids, but the beauty of a starry night can't be beat.

"even if he has somewhat peculiar tastes" You can say 2012 Mikey, it's okay XD
But yeah it is very interesting how that trait got picked up and examined from many different angles depending on the iteration. Sometimes he's good, sometimes he's bad, sometimes he can cook fresh things, other times his food choices can only be eaten by him. It's an interesting continues interaction with the hobby/skill that's not really done a lot
If I ever feel bad about my cooking, I just remember that 03 Mikey somehow managed to burn toast using a toaster while at April's.
Man has no idea what he was doing in that kitchen.
It's funny to think that if he got better as he got older, he didn't tell anyone. Being better means having to actually cook for the family, and why do that when you got brothers who can do so instead?
#See we see 87 Mikey make normal pizzas#So he can he just chooses not to#meanwhile 2012 Mikey unironically thinks that yeah that's how it's suppose to be#And yet he's somehow still the best cook out of all of them becuase they're just That Bad#2012 were not prepared to be orphan#They're taste buds got fried from the agley and worms#Michelangelo Splinterson#Michelangelo Hamato#Hamato Michelangelo#tmnt 2003#rottmnt#tmnt 2012#reblog#reblog response#technicallysublimechild#character meta#let me know if i need to tag anything else

Playing a game called "lying to myself" where I tell myself that when the q's full cleared out I'd be done with the big art project and can show everyone.
So that was a lie, of course.
And since I make chronic bad choices I will have to figure out a new tag for my digital art. Because I decided I wanted the first few pages of my new drawing pad to be a comic so I can't do my physical drawings till that project is done.
Why do I do this to myself?
#Trick question I love the teetles#meaningless rambling#I should canonize that as a tag too#rootpost#text post#my text post#non fandom
