Donna and Dick meet!

Dick had mostly let the currents guide him, drifting wherever they took him. He slept more than he swam, floating aimlessly through strange reefs and open seas.

Donna had been raised by a tribe of human warriors on an island. Grateful for their care, she still never truly felt at home. She was caught between two worlds, belonging to neither. One day, she thanked her sisters for their love and care. They understood. They had always known she was meant for something different. So Donna set off alone, traveling and helping wherever she could.

That’s when she found him. A mermaid, half-buried in sand, barely moving. He blended so well with the water and sea floor she almost missed him. But lying exposed like that in the shallows was dangerous. So she went to help.

Maybe, just maybe, she had finally found what she had been looking for.

More angst for the mermaid AU! Dick could get taken by Deathstroke while he’s in the middle of running away. Or any number of other villains, but Deathstroke is almost like his nemesis, so he’s who I thought of first. And now he needs rescue too, but Bruce doesn’t know that.

Uhh yeah, that could really work! Also because I headcanon Deathstroke as human, he could be one of the human mer-hunters after Dick. It could even happen after Dick meets Kory and his fam thinks he's with her, but he’s actually been captured by Slade.

okay sooo story time...

I'm not sure if I should add trigger warnings to this, but it does include mentions of child captivity/neglect and violence.

Dick and his family were hunted by Mer-hunters: humans who target Merfolk. These hunters often slaughter the adults and use their scales, fins, and other parts for various purposes. They capture the young children, raise them in captivity, and train them into obedience before selling them off for performances and entertainment.

After killing Dick’s parents, they kept him bound aboard their ship until they could dock at the next island, where he would be sold. But before they reached land, a massive storm struck. The ship sank in the chaos, leaving Dick trapped in the wreckage.

Bruce, always vigilant for signs of human interference near his territory, especially after storms, was scouting the area when he came across the wreck. Among the shattered wood and debris, he found Dick.

Jason was an outcast, alone and barely surviving. With no pod or family, he scavenged near human settlements, stealing out of desperation in a sea that offered nothing to those without a home.

Bruce first met Jason when he tried to steal his fin bracelet. It was gold, and Jason thought he could sell it. But before Bruce could confront him, the boy vanished into the open sea.

Bruce spotted him again while scouting near a human island. He often patrolled the borders of their territory making sure humans didn’t come too close. That’s when he saw Jason again, hidden beneath a boat dock, eating scraps and leftovers thrown out by humans. Bruce tried to approach, but Jason thought he was there to steal his food and hid again.

So, Bruce started hunting more food. Alfred prepared it, and Dick was the one to leave it near Jason, figuring a kid might scare him less than an adult would. Eventually, Jason stopped hiding from them.

Bruce wanted to take a shortcut through the coral reef. While swimming ahead of his parents Human hunters spotted him and tried to catch him. Before they could, his mother grabbed him and hid him inside a large shell. His parents tried to defeat them, but there were too many hunters. Bruce was too weak to open the shell and could only watch as his parents were killed. Later, Alfred found him.

In your Mermaid AU, does Dick also have scarring from the Joker attack?

I'm not sure if it makes sense, but the short answer is No.

The longer answer is that, at least how I imagine it in my head, light blue-colored mermaids like Dick have a unique trait: their scales can heal without leaving scar tissue because of a specific component in their scales. That made them highly sought after. That's also why their kind often traveled in small groups, trying to avoid being captured or exploited.

Jason had vanished after the run-in with the Joker, cursed and sealed in a glowing green orb, drifting in the deep. No one knew what had become of him…

Until Talia, a powerful sea witch, found him deep in the water-filled caves where she lives. She broke the curse, restoring his mermaid form and healing him as much as she could, but Joker’s magic had left its mark.

The venom, some kind of corrosive, toxic sludge that's always left behind when Joker uses his magic, had eaten into his scales, bleaching them pale and scarring some of them white. Even after healing, a faint, sickly green shimmer still clings to them, no matter how much time passes.

…probably not. I don't even know how long it's gonna be, I'm mostly just drawing bits and pieces of plot that come to mind. I don't think I'll ever do a fully drawn-out story though 😅
