The long answer would be: I am just a girl in her early twenties trying to figure life out and things have been tumultuous and chaotic. I want to throw myself at my passions and translate more because I really do love doing this, but because of a lack of resources at this moment I need to have other priorities. Healthy work life balance doesn't exist for me right now icl lol.

I'd love to be able to listen to the audio drama while doing some kind of chore about the house or garden; it is such a lovely production with beautiful music and great voice actors that it is enjoyable to listen to even if one does not properly understand it. 😊

Hi guys! Unfortunately, YT has taken down some of my uploads 😭 (S1EP01, EP02, New Year's Eve MT, and Attacking MT) I'm currently trying to appeal for EP1 & 2 since those are free episodes on MissEvan. The two MTs cannot be reuploaded and will only be on Tumblr.

Sorry for the late reply! Life has been sorta hectic ahaah. I also had to have another look through the books for your question.

As far as I know, nothing that the children say in the books seems to indicate HC's luck caused his mum, or his family, to abandon him. They just say what kids say when they're generically mean.

HC has said his mum died before the story began, so before age ten. So I think the children is probably referring to a step-mum when they were bullying him. There's not a lot of detail about HC's childhood, other than what MNQ said, and the cultural connection he has with his mum, who's supposed to be a "wicked foreign beauty" and he honours her through the way he dresses. Clearly doesn't seem to like his dad, though.

Hi! First of all, I can't thank you enough for your translations, they're truly a blessing. Second, I hope is okay to ask questions but regarding the short video, you translated the kids bullying Hua Cheng by telling him he killed his mom and pointed out this is a reference to him being born under the star of solitude. I was wondering if you knew if this phrasing was also in the novel's text, because the 7seas edition says "you don't have a mom because your mom didn't want you", but I'm thinking that Hua Cheng's mom dying because of his luck makes more sense for his character (Also, can I be added to the tag list?)

That TL note can be referenced from the Seven Seas edition, Book 2, Chapter 27. When the State Preceptor is saying that Hong Hong'er bears the "fate of extinction, the sign of the Star of Solitude" (天煞孤星), and that "whoever gets close to him will lose their life."

I only made a brief reference since I felt it was too complicated for just a TL note, but the Chinese subtitles is saying Hong Hong'er "克死了" his mum. In this sense it relates directly to someone's luck "harming" or "ruining" other people, to the point of death. Which ties back to what the State Preceptor was saying about Hong Hong'er's destiny.

Fun fact:

天煞孤星 (Tiān Shā Gū Xīng) is commonly used in novels and entertainment to allude to someone having a disastrous and lonely destiny (for dramatic effect, I think). One other example would be Sha Po Lang. Its origin comes from Chinese Astrology, but it's inaccurate. I can't say for sure that this type of fate doesn't exist at all, but there's no such absolute fate in Four Pillars of Destiny 八字 (Bā Zì) or Purple Star Astrology 紫微斗数 (Zǐ Wēi Dǒu Shù), which are two common fortune-telling methods in Chinese metaphysics. Things are never this black and white.

This term most likely came from combining concepts from both methods. In ZWDS' Heaven's Evil Star 天煞 (Tiān Shā), and BZ's Robbery Star 劫煞 (Jié Shā) and Solitary Star 孤辰 (Gū Chén). None of them are particularly good, but they don't affect your fate as much as people think. I could go more in-depth but these are some key points:

The bad luck would likely affect others around you, more than it affects you

Many other factors also determine how much these Stars would affect your fate (e.g. other Stars in your chart, whether you have someone or something that has a stronger energy to neutralise the negativity, whether you cultivate goodness and blessings in the world to neutralise the negativity)

Everything still determines on the environment, people, and timing

I know a bit about this since I started learning about the Book of Changes 易經 (Yì Jīng) and my parents have studied BZ for more than a decade. I hope this helped lol, I was just answering a simple question then went and wrote a whole cultural meta (。-∀-)

TLDR: Mei Nianqing saying Fafa's destiny of being "the fate of extinction" is BOLLOCKS in my opinion because I am a Hua Cheng defender. That, and also Chinese Astrology is very cool.
