food The art of culinary is one that will always intrigue me. As a child, I was always convinced that I wanted to pursue a career in this field, being that I was so interested in it. However, it is easy as a child to let a simple interest turn into an entire life goal. Growing up, I slowly realized that as naturally drawn I was to culinary arts, and as fun as it was to major in this field in high school; it just wasn’t for me. I am happy now to realize that to me, cooking is just a hobby and not a career path. This has helped me find my way to the path that I’m now on, pursuing the study of psychology.

Hey, my names Allisa Iannaci and I’m a senior in Bergen County Technical High School. Being a senior may be fun, but it comes with many difficult tasks- one of which is the nightmare of applying to college. It’s as if everything up until now has been the rising action to our big moment of going to college. However, this time comes with a great deal of stress and confusion for many students who are unsure about what they want their future to look like.
Luckily, I’ve always known for the most part that I want to go into psychology in college, so the stress of being completely blind to my future isn’t something I’ve had to deal with too much. This still, of course, does not provide me with all of the answers I could possibly hope for like; what school will I go to? Will I be eligible for a scholarship? How much financial aid can I receive, and what the heck is a FAFSA? However, very slowly I am continuing to learn these things (more or less).
I can definitely say that I fit into that group of stressed and confused students. College applications often feel like a very tedious and repetitive process. However, I have found a way to make it much easier and smoother to get through.
When I first began the process, it was easy to fill out the basic information sections. Your name, where you go to school, where you were born- blah blah blah. This was especially easy since I am using the common app to apply to most of my colleges. Therefore, I only am required to fill out this information once and it gets sent to everyone. This takes away the annoying “repetitive” part of the college application process. If I was required to fill out this information separately for each college I think I’d lose my mind.
In addition to the common application being very helpful, many articles published by well-known authors have provided me with good insight on the college process as well. For example, Rudnick's “College Application Essay” provided me with advice on how to wow the college application board with more than just perfect grades.
Rudnick stresses the importance of the college essay, and that it is your opportunity to shine regardless of your academic track record. Receiving a perfect score on the SAT or getting straight A’s throughout high school won’t do you much good if you can’t write an impressive essay that perfectly describes yourself and sets you apart from everyone else.
This sent me into a deep self-reflection and discovery period, where I had to truly understand myself in order to write my college essay. How would I perfectly capture my personality and strengths in one piece of writing?
I ultimately decided to write my essay about working a part-time job during High School. I felt that this was very important and captured the essence of my personality. Not only did it prove that I was an independent and hardworking person, but it showed my persistence and ability to juggle multiple tasks at once. However, I am still working on perfecting it.
