The Red Plague

The art above was created by Nix Hydra, and can be found in the Minor Arcana Art Book (or where I got it - off the fandom wiki page, because who’s going to stop me)

Much of Zelda’s story in the non-apprentice timeline delves into the plague before, during, and in the aftermath of Vesuvia, and I wanted to compile my lore and headcanons for it in one place before I delve into her story fully. I will incorporate as much canon as possible, but given that that isn’t a large amount of info, a lot of this is based off research and personal worldbuilding. 

CWs for discussions of disease, death, body horror, I guess spoilers but I’m surprised if it is for anyone considering how the info is everywhere in game in all routes. This is also, again, personal headcanon and I don’t expect it to fall in line with everyone’s thoughts on the plague.

A Hint to Curing the Plague without Killing Lucio (aka. Vlastomil might have ice powers)

Not sure if this has been talked about either…

While playing Asra’s route The Death books, Asra mentions possessing the Liber Yvonis, so I did a bit of digging.

The Liber Yvonis (The Book of Eibon) is a fictional Lovecraft book, an “immense text of arcane knowledge that contained, among other things, a detailed account of Eibon’s exploits, including his journeys to the Vale of Pnath and the planet Shaggai, his veneration rituals of Zhothaqquah (Eibon’s patron deity), and his magical formulae—such as for the slaying of certain otherworldly horrors.”

There’s a short story called “The Coming of the White Worm” as Chapter IX of the Book of Eibon.

In the story, the worm froze men:

The ‘fat white worm” and his entourage travel up and down the coast of Mhu Thulan, destroying shipping and port cities with a kind of ice ray that enfrosts anything it touches. 

We find a WHITE WORM. In the FROSTY SNOW.

Vlastomil doesn’t have ice powers… (or uh, does he?? >>;;) Does Wriggler have superpowers?

The book continues with how to kill said white worm:

Whosoever learneth the time and means of his vulnerability and hath heart for this undertaking, may slay him easily. And the time for the deed is during his term of sleep. Therefore we adjure thee now by the faith of the Old Ones to draw the sword thou wearest beneath thy mantle and plunge it in the side of Rlim Shaikorth: for such is the means of his slaying.

But know, however, that he who slayeth Rlim Shaikorth must necessarily perish in the slaying.“

Rlim Shaikorth is the white worm in the Book of Eibon, yes. And yes, the brave (but somewhat foolish) warlock who slew the worm did die. The Ice 9 ice and iceberg melted away after the worm’s death.

We don’t know how far the devs referenced this book, how much still stays true to this story. Vlastomil looks less creepy, and we don’t know if the person who kills him will die. And we don’t know if killing him would even dispel the plague beetle curse or if the plague persists after death of Vlastomil. We know the disaster worms can shrivel up and die if they aren’t fed regularly though…

But I think one thing is for sure:

There can be an option not to kill Lucio to cure the plague.

Don’t kill Lucio if the option to choose shows up. Don’t do it because there’s no going back from murder for our beloved fluffy magician, our beloved dorky plague doctor, our beloved queen. Save their souls. Save Lucio from his own stupid. Sorry Vlastomil, the only way for any of us to have a happy ending… Is if a Fool comes to kill you. Preferably and probably Lucio, he can redeem himself with some slaying, and while it’s sad I hope he takes down Valdemar too, like this:

He’s going to be insufferable afterwards, but his route would be a lot easier to play if he actually lives up to all his boasting.
